Mr. Rex W. Dickey

Mr. Rex W. Dickey, 54, of Jones Avenue, entered into rest Tuesday, July 22, 2003 at Anna Maria Rehab and Nursing Facility. Funeral services were held Friday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens. Mr. Dickey was a lifelong resident of Burke County and a a graduate of Waynesboro High School in 1966. He attended Georgia Southern University, and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He was an avid sportsman and loved hunting, and was a lover of the great outdoors. Mr. Dickey was a supporter of Georgia Public Television. He was Christian by faith and had worked for Legion Industries for over 30 years. Survivors include his spouse, Elizabeth N. Dickey of Waynesboro; a sister, Phyllis D. Seabolt of Gainesville; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Charles McLeroy, John Lovett, William McNeely, Freddie DeLoach, Les Peel, Ben Reese, Walt Seegar, Everette Newman and David Petrea.

Mrs. Claudine Tolber Mills

Mrs. Claudine Tolbert Mills, 92, of 820 Ellison Bridge Road, Sardis, died at her residence on Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2003. Funeral services were held at Sardis Baptist Church on Friday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Sterling Bargeron and Dr. Bill King officiating. Burial took place at Sardis Cemetery.

A native of Madison County, Mrs. Mills was born on Aug. 18, 1910. She was the daughter of the late Claude Delisglise Tolbert and Cecil Malona Oldham Tolbert. After attending schools in Hull and Winterville, Ga., she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Georgia in 1932. She later pursued a graduate degree in the area of social work from the university.

After graduation, Mrs. Mills began her career as a teacher in the Burke County School System. As a visiting teacher in 1945, she began her mission to stress the correlation between attendance and academic success. While coordinating with community agencies and resources, her efforts bridged the gaps among students, their families and the school system. In this capacity, she impacted the lives of countless students by identifying obstacles to their educational performance and working individually with them to overcome these barriers and achieve their maximum potential. In 1970, she retired from the Burke County School System.

Mrs. Mills, one of the oldest members of Sardis Baptist Church, served in many roles. At her death, she was a member of the Homemakers Sunday School class and the Hardy Women on Missions organization. Outside the church, Mrs. Mills was active in the Beta Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honorary organization for women educators. She also participated in county, state and national educational associations. In addition, she was a charter member and former matron of Chapter 382 of the Order of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Mills was preceded in death by her husband, William Herbert Mills Sr.; her grandson, David Mills Dixon; her granddaughter, Donna Susan Dixon; her sisters, Willie Mae Tolbert Johnson and Salena Tolbert Hoppe; and her brother, Ralph Harmon Tolbert.
Survivors include two daughters, Malona Mills Dixon of Girard and Gloria Mills Saxon (Marvin) of Waynesboro; a son, William Herbert (Bill) Mills Jr. (Joan) of Statesboro; seven grandchildren, Randy Dixon, Michael Dixon, Jeanie Saxon Blackburn, Rob Saxon, Gary Mills, Billy Mills and Dale Oglesby; 16 great-grandchildren, Steven Dixon, Alan Dixon, Kelli Dixon, Kimberly Dixon, David Dixon, Elizabeth Dixon, Jessica Dixon, Marcus Dixon, Jason Blackburn, Ben Blackburn, Jan Blackburn, Kyle Mills, Allie Mills, Clay Mills, Katie Mills and Ashley Oglesby. Special friends of the family are Coach Mary Robbins, Marlene and John Hamilton, Ida Ponder, Virginia Godbee and Alice Turner. Pallbearers were Randy Dixon, Michael Dixon, Gary Mills, Billy Mills, Rob Saxon, Steven Dixon, Alan Dixon, Rickie Blackburn and Dale Oglesby.
The family received friends on Thursday, Aug. 7 from 6-8 p.m.
Memorials may be made to the Sardis Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 280, Sardis, Ga., 30456.

Mr. Thomas Everett McBride

Mr. Thomas Everett McBride, 64, of Lake Bluff Drive entered into rest Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003. Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 7 at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro with the Rev. Robert L. Smith officiating. Interment followed at Rose Dhu Cemetery in Vidette.

Mr. McBride was a native of Burke County and the owner of McBride Gin and Farm Supply. He was the Former Ruling Elder of ARP Presbyterian Church of Vidette and also the mayor of Vidette. He also served as a board member for the Bank of Midville. Mr. McBride was a member of the Waynesboro Country Club and the Ogeechee Country Club in Louisville. He was a former board member at Edmund Burke Academy and the co-founder of the Georgia Agriculture Chemical Company and received numerous awards and recognitions with Helena Chemical Company. Mr. McBride was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda J. McBride of Waynesboro; two daughters, Deborah Ann McBride of Santa Fe, N.M. and Lynn McBride Reeves and her husband Hoke Reeves, both of Statesboro; a son, Thomas Everett McBride Jr. and his wife Shanna McBride, both of Augusta; two grandchildren, Mary Margaret Reeves and Smith Reeves.
Pallbearers were Dean Daily, Johnny Shivers, Raybon Anderson, Jim Alexander, Sam Story, Manton Horton and Steve Bailey. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Hospice Home Health Care at 2803 Wrightsboro Rd., Augusta, Ga. 30904 or to First Presbyterian Church ALS Association at 810 Myrick St., Waynesboro, Ga. 30830.

Ms. Karen Hope Hawn

Ms. Karen Hope Hawn, 23, and daughter, Brandy Nicole Haberkorn, 17 months, entered into rest Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home followed by interment at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Ms. Hawn is survived by a son, Michael Ray Haberkorn of Waynesboro; father, Walter Hawn of Jefferson; mother and stepfather, Joyce and Denny Smith of Waynesboro; a sister, Sharon F. Hawn of Augusta; a brother, Eric R. Hawn of Augusta; a grandmother, Helen A. Hawn of Augusta; a step-grandparent, Dale Davis; a step-great-grandmother, Mary Smith; and several aunts and uncles. Pallbearers were Randy Boatwright, Mike Boatwright, David Armour, Bill Hawn, Doug Black and Jarrett Dillingham.Mrs. Willie Myrtle Findley BrinsonMrs. Willie Myrtle Findley Brinson, 89, of Vidalia died Wednesday, July 9 at the Bethany Home Nursing Center in Vidalia after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Friday, July 11 at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Murchison Funeral Home with the Revs. Jimmy Smith and Irvin Murphy officiating. Interment followed at Lyons City Cemetery. Mrs. Brinson was a native of Emanuel County, living in Burke County from 1949 to 1995, then moving back to Vidalia. She was a retired seamstress, a member of the Smith Street Baptist Church and the Lyons Senior Citizens Club. Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Sue Meeks Brown of Kennesaw; a son, Noel Carlton Meeks Sr. of Waynesboro; three sisters, Lois Howell of Lyons, Frances Parkerson of Eastman and Oretha Watson of Gordon; a brother, Leon Findley of Lyons; and seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Jerrell Lynch, Sr.

Mr. Jerrell Lynch Sr. entered into rest on Friday, Aug 1, 2003.
Funeral services were held on Sat., Aug. 9 at 1 p.m. at Allen Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Eddie Fryer officiating. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Lynch of Waynesboro; a son, Jerrell Lynch Jr.; three daughters, Katina Wright, Tiffany Lynch and Jerica Lynch, all of Waynesboro; three sisters, Alberta Ports of Augusta; Annie Lynch and Marva Lynch, both of Hephzibah; four brothers, Phillip Lynch Jr. of Waynesboro; Willie T. Lynch and Larry Lynch, both of Hephzibah, and Oscar Lynch of Augusta; five grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Phinazee and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Brandy Nicole Haberkom

Brandy Nicole Haberkorn, 17 months, and mother, Karen Hope Hawn, 23, entered into rest Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, with Bishop Lamar Willis officiating. Interment followed at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

Brandy is survived by her father, Kenneth Haberkorn of Augusta; a sister, Rebbecca Haberkorn of Calhoun Falls, S.C.; two brothers, William Haberkorn of Calhoun Falls, S.C. and Michael Ray Haberkorn of Waynesboro; grandparents, Ray and Shirley Haberkorn of Penn., Doris Grubbs of S.C., Walter and Susan Hawn of Jefferson, and Joyce and Denny Smith of Waynesboro; great-grandmother, Delease Grubbs; and several aunts and uncles Pallbearers were Randy Boatwright, Mike Boatwright, David Armour, Bill Hawn, Doug Black and Jarrett Dillingham.

Mrs. Martha Jane Harner Rannenberg

Mrs. Martha Jane Harner Rannenberg, 88, of Natchi-toches, La., formerly of Waynesboro, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 15, 2003 at Willis Knighton Piedmont Hospital in Shreveport after a 57-year disciplined life with diabetes.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug. 23, at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery with the Rev. Henry Erwin officiating. Military honor guard honors will be accorded. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to services at First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Mrs. Rannenberg was born March 31, 1915 in Frederick, Md., to Joseph Winfred and Ida Belle Hendry Harner and spent most of her adult life in Waynesboro. During World War II she proudly served her country in the U.S. and Germany as a member of the Women’s Army Corp. She retired as head teller for the Bank of Waynesboro to enjoy life gardening, bird watching and spending time with her grandchildren. For many years she served as the kindergarten Sunday School teacher in her church, First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Bill Harner and Dr. Joe Harner; and son, Joe Ed Harner. “Mamie,” as she was fondly known to her grandchildren, is survived by her daughter, Martie Rannenberg Cain and son-in-law, Rev. Doug Cain; two sisters TeCoah Tucker and Belle Clarke; grandchildren, Sally Parsons, Jed Cain and wife Holly, Brian Cain and Mary Cain; and great-granchildren, Phillip, Patrick and Sarah Parsons. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be made to the children’s ministries at First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro or to the Susan Harling Robinson Fellowship in Diabetes Research, Office of Advancement, Tulane University School of Medicine, 1430 Tulane Ave., Box TW 34, New Orleans, La. 70112.

Mrs. Mamie Skinner Evans Gresham

Mrs. Mamie Skinner Evans Gresham, 85, of 129 South Street, Keysville, entered into rest at her residence Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003. Graveside funeral services will be held today (Wednesday, Aug. 20), at 11 a.m. at the Keysville United Methodist Church Cemetery, Keysville, with the Rev. Bill Arrington officiating. Mrs. Gresham was born in Twin City, the daughter of Oscar and Laney Skinner. She had lived all of her adult life in Burke County and was a member of the Keysville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her sons, Walter Evans and Harold Evans. Survivors include two sons, Cecil (Flora) Evans and Dean (Brenda) Evans, both of Keysville; a daughter, Ruth (Mac) McDonald of Wrens; two sisters, Mary Watts of Keysville and Mance Peebles of Swains-boro; and 18 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Glen Evans, Billy Evans, Charles Caugham, Harold Kite, David Skinner and David Cosby.

Ms. Charlene Roberson of Nelson Lane

Ms. Charlene Roberson of Nelson Lane, entered into rest on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2003 at Burke Medical Center. Funeral services were held Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at Murphy Ebenezer Baptist Church, with the Rev. E. Miller officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Ms. Roberson was born in Boston, Mass., Aug. 15, 1962 to Elliot and Bernice Coleman. At an early age she joined New Hope Baptist Church in Boston where she served on the Junior Usher Board and the Sunday School choir. Later in life she relocated to Waynesboro and became a faithful member of Murphy Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Alfonzo Freeman Roberson. She leaves to cherish her memories four loving children, Courtney and Katherine Roberson, Shadoe and Nicholas Bostic; her parents, Elliot and Bernice Coleman; five sisters, Jessie (Jerome) Harris of Augusta, Katherine (William) Buxton, Betty C. Dukes and Intoria Coleman, all of Waynesboro and Deshone Coleman of Sebring, Fla.; five brothers, Elliot (Cynthia) Coleman Jr., Haywood (Cathy) Coleman of Boston, Raymond Coleman, James Coleman and Devontae Coleman, all of Waynesboro; three godchildren, Jason Dukes, Intoria Coleman and K’Tiera Bryant; a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends; and a special and devoted friend, Daryl Stone. Phinazee & Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Lenora Bedingfield Bell
entered into rest on Friday, Aug. 22, 2003 at Burke Medical Center.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Waynesboro, with Dr. David Carter and the Rev. Henry Erwin officiating. Interment followed at Magnolia Cemetery. Mrs. Bell, a native of Emanuel County, was the daughter of Matthew Green Bedingfield and Vannah Johnson Bedingfield. She owned and operated Lenora’s in Millen, a speciality dress shop and also owned and operated The Glamour Box in Waynesboro. Mrs. Bell was very active in Waynesboro in civic and community affairs for over 40 years. Mrs. Bell was a member of First United Methodist Church in which she was a member of the United Methodist Women’s Circle. She was a member of Town and Country Woman’s Club, The Club of Little Gardens and was also on the board of the Community Concert Association.

She is survived by her husband, Simeon Bell IV of Waynesboro; one son, Simeon Bell V of Waynesboro; two daughters, Valarie Briggs Lischer and her husband, Dale, of Atlanta and Mary Bell Hunt and her husband, Rick, of Marietta; seven grandchildren, Kathryn Bell Hunt, Emily Palmer Hunt, Richard McGowan Hunt III, Stephen Lanier Hunt, Patrick Chandler Hunt, Andrew Briggs Lischer and Simeon Bell VI. Pallbearers were Norman Reeves, Fred Roberts, Pat Johnson, Briggs Lischer, McGowan Hunt, Chandler Hunt and Simeon Bell VI.
