Mrs. Mary Sikes Vickery
70, of Waynesboro died Monday Aug. 25, 2003 at Burke Medical Center in Waynesboro. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday, Aug. 27), at 4 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel in Waynesboro, with Dr. Al Wright officiating. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Mrs. Vickery was a lifelong resident of Burke County and was a member of Waynesboro Pentecostal (Calvary Tabernacle). She was retired from Keller Aluminum Company. Mrs. Vickery was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd O. Vickery, in 1990. She is survived by three sons, Floyd O. Vickery Jr., Dennis Lee Vickery and Danny W. Vickery, all of Waynesboro; three sisters, Catherine Pate of Wadley and Dianne Nunnally and Sandra Sikes, both of Waynesboro; four brothers, Billy Sikes and Donnie Sikes, both of Waynesboro, John Mack Sikes of Augusta and David Sikes of Huntsville, Ala.; and six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Ron Williams, Dennis Taylor, Mickey Collins, Billy Blackburn, Douglas Cates, Tommy Quick, Johnny Jenkins and Greg Parker.
Mrs. Marcia Yolanda Cameron
of Apopka, Fla., died Friday, July 18, 2003.meron of Apopka, Fla., died Friday, July 18, 2003. Funeral services were held Thursday, July 24 at Baldwin Fairchild Funeral Home in Apopka with the Rev. James Hicks officiating. Mrs. Cameron was the eldest of four children born to Ms. Rosa Dent. Marcia was born Jan. 16, 1961 in Waynesboro. At the age of six her mother moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. and settled in Far Rockaway, Queens, N.Y., where she completed her education and began her career. Marcia met and married John Anthony Cameron. To this union three children were born. Her son, Chase Anthony Cameron, preceded her in death. She loved life and wore a lovely smile. The Camerons relocated to Apopka in 1992 and Marcia began working with Carrier Air Conditioning of Central Florida. She excelled in this career for 10 years. She made many friends and was loved by all in her department. Marcia is survived by her husband, John Anthony; two children, Sgt. Shindell JamesCameron of Ft. Bragg, N.C. and Shyrell Allyce Cameron of Apopka; mother, Ms. Rosa Dent of Far Rockaway; father, Isiah Hodge Sr. of Waynesboro; stepfather, Roland Edwards of Dallas, Texas; three sisters, Kira A. Dent of Far Rockaway, Veronica Dent of Dallas and Inez Hodge of Waynesboro; four brothers, Melvin (Tasha) Dent of Charlotte, N.C., Isiah (Annette) Hodge Jr. and David Jackson, both of Waynesboro and Herman (Annette) Evans of Queens, N.Y.; four adopted siblings, Stacey, Dominique, Tiara and Michael of Far Rockaway; very close friends, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Flowers of Apopka; and many cousins in Waynesboro. Marcia was the niece of Ms. Bellesheba Dent of Waynesboro.
Deacon Simon W. Carter
son of the late Oscar and Bertha Carter, entered into rest on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003 at Burke Medical Center, Waynesboro. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 23, at noon at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Girard, with the Rev. Rex Wright officiating and Pastor Walter Dukes presiding. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Carter was a deacon and member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, a World War II veteran and a retired City of Augusta employee. He leaves to mourn a devoted wife of 61 years, Mamie Lee Carter; five sons, Roosevelt (Minnie) Carter and Gene Carter (Lawanda Smith), both of St. Petersburg, Fla., Josh (Willie Pearl) Carter, Michael (Diane) Carter and Bobby Carter (Diane Ellison), all of Waynesboro; seven daughters, Earnestine (Frank) Best, Annie Ruth Carter, Dorothy Berksteiner and Shirley Cherry, all of Savannah, Sharon (Clinton) Roberts of Sardis, Mary Ann Baxley and Eva (Jimmy) Chandler, both of Waynesboro; two daughters-in-law, Imogene Carter of St. Petersburg and Cynthia Carter of Barnwell, S.C.; one son-in-law, Lannis Baxley of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; five sisters, Mary Ann Clark and Loretta (Leonard) Moore, both of Detroit, Mich., Thelma Miller of Ft. Lauderdale and Callie Griffin and Ruby Lee Mobley, both of Girard; one brother, Judge Carter of Girard; one aunt, Mattie Walker of Hephzibah; five brothers-in-law; six sisters-in-law; 49 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; two godchildren, Clayton Greene and Kendra Mitchell; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mr. Raymond (Ray) Ralph Carpenter
75, of 193 Jack DeLaigle Road, Waynesboro, entered into rest on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003 at Medical College of Georgia Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Botsford Baptist Church with Brother Leroy Thomas and Ruben Rogers officiating.
Mr. Carpenter was a native of West Virginia, the son of the late Ralph and Gertrude Marks. He had retired from the U.S. Marine Corps serving in three wars, World War II, Korean conflict and the Vietnam War. After his military retirement, he worked for Post General Foods with 18 years of service. Mr. Carpenter is survived by his wife, Ellen Carpenter of Waynesboro; three daughters, Constance White, Cathleen Triestrim and Carol Clark. Additional survivors include two sisters, Eskie Bailey and Bressie Filpo; three brothers, Gene Carpenter, Kenneth Carpenter and Ralph Carpenter; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Mr. Carpenter was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Krueger, who died December 2002.
Mr. W.G. Beall
Mr. W.G. Beall, 83, of Hazlehurst, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 30 at 3 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church, with the Rev. Keith Yawn officiating. Interment was held in the Hazlehurst City Cemetery. Mr. Beall was a native of Jeff Davis County and had lived most of his life in Jeff Davis County. He was the son of the late Willie Richard and Gladys Newman Beall. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, superintendent of Jeff Davis County schools for 12 years, and was principal at schools in St. Marys, Sardis, Wrightsville, Dawson and Hazlehurst. Mr. Beall was a farmer in Burke County and was a veteran of the Army Air Corps in World War II. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. Mr. Beall was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Walker, and a brother, James Edward Beall. Mr. Beall is survived by his wife, Cherrie S. Beall of Hazlehurst; his children, Deborah Chance of Warner Robins, Gary Beall of Hazle-hurst and Susan Summers of Stuart, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Lee Childs of Thomasville and Marjorie Nell Morgan of Macon; five grandchildren, Brandon Chance, Denise Nitcholus, Kelly Beall, Jackie Beall and Matthew McCorkle; four great-grandchildren, Caitlin Silas, Tyler Nitcholus, Alexis Nitcholus and Gracey Anne Crosby; and neices and nephews. Active pallbearers were Carol Walker, Randall Walker, Garland Walker, Richard Childs, John Morgan, Mark Morgan, Jim Beall, Jason Beall and Jeremy Beall. Honorary pallbearers were Ernest Findley, Dr. Dan Elrod, Bayne Stone, Carroll Girtman, W.G. Ellis, Dewey Powell, Walter Thompson Sr., Hubert Matthews and D.H. McRae.

Mr. Carl Glenn Suttles
Mr. Carl Glenn Suttles, 60, of Hephzibah, entered into rest Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Memorial services will be held Thursday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m. at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, 842 Liberty St., Waynesboro, with Dr. Al Wright officiating. Mr. Suttles was a native of Monett, Mo. and lived in Burke County for the past 12 years. He was an equipment operator for Hudson Grassing Co., Inc. for the past two years. Mr. Suttles was Baptist.
Mr. Suttles was preceded in death by his father, Finnis Suttles. He is survived by his wife, Mary L. Deem of Hephzibah; his mother, Dorothy Williams of Monett; a stepson, Larry Sylvester of Hephzibah; a brother, Johnny Stricklin; four sisters, Joyce Smith, Jannie Smith, Edda Doss and Pam Martin, all of Monett; and three step-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from noon-1 p.m.
Mrs. Emma Lee Washington
Mrs. Emma Lee “Red” Washington, 57, of Waynesboro, entered into rest on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at her residence. Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 7, at 1:30 p.m. at Waynesboro Deliverance Evangelistic Church in Waynesboro with Pastor Glenn Wiggins Sr. officiating. Interment was in Pines Cemetery, Waynesboro.
Mrs. Washington was a native of Burke County and the daughter of the late Willie James Houston and Carrie Houston. At an early age, she joined the Ebenezer Baptist Church. She was employed at Keller (Sunbeam) for 24 years. Later in life she became a member of Waynesboro Deliverance Evangelistic Church where she was an active member in the choir and served as a faithful member until she became sick.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories a loving and devoted husband, A.B. Washington Sr.; her mother, Carrie Houston, mother-in-law, Rosa Mae Clemmons; a loving daughter, Coretta (Richard) Wilson; four loving sons, A.B. Washington Jr., Keith (Sheronica) Washington, Dennis Washington and Randale Washington; two uncles, L.C. Rogers of Augusta and Silas Hancock of Waynesboro; three sisters, Marian (Jimmy) Terry and Lillie Bell (Larry) Jenkins, all of Waynesboro, and Caretha (Willie James) Terry of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; six brothers, Willie James (Annie Jo) Houston Jr., Ricky Houston, Charles Houston, Albert Houston, David (Sheryl) Houston, all of Waynesboro, and Larry (Terri) Houston of Ft. Lauderdale; four sisters-in-law, Pearlene (Curtis) Bostick, Sarah (Johnny) Lynch, Gertrude (Frank) McKelton, Betty (Roosevelt) Johnson, all of Waynesboro; three brothers-in-law, Joseph (Yolanda) Terry of Hephzibah, Lorenzo (Daphney) Terry and Willie James (Martha Ann) Palmer, all of Waynesboro; 14 loving grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and a devoted and caring friend of the family, Willa F. Mr. Thomas Davis, Sr.
Mr. Thomas Reuben Davis Sr., age 91, of Kernersville, N.C., died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, with the Rev. Phillip Wagoner officiating. Burial followed in Walkertown First Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Davis was born March 15, 1912 in Forsyth County, a son of the late John and Leatha Ann Cobbler Davis.
He was a member of Walkertown Baptist Church and a retiree of Sears & Roebuck Co. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita S. Davis; a son, John C. Davis Sr.; two grandsons, John C. Davis Jr. and Rodney Davis; and a granddaughter, Angela Seymoure. Mr. Davis is survived by three daughters, Rebecca D. Flynt and husband Henry of Kernersville, Sylvia D. Baker and husband Hubert, Patricia D. Roberts and husband Ricky, all of Ellijay; five sons, Jack W. Davis and wife Sharon of Kernersville, K. Wayne Davis of Pierson, Fla., Gary T. Davis and wife Dot of Kernersville, Thomas R. Davis Jr. and wife Sue, C. Albert Davis and wife Barbara, all of Millen; 30 grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and two ex-wives, Irene S. Atkins and Kathleen K. Davis. Mrs. Elsie Mae Nunley Claxton
Mrs. Elsie Mae Nunley Claxton, 75, of 466 Claxton-Lively Road, Waynesboro, entered into rest Monday, Sept. 15, 2003 at her residence. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, at Botsford Baptist Church, with the Revs. Wayne Dixon and J.R. Wheeler officiating. Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Claxton was a native of Tracey City, Tenn., but had lived in the Waynesboro area for the past 40 years. She was a homemaker and member of Botsford Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Eddie B. Claxton; a son, David E. Claxton and his wife, Bobbi, both of Waynesboro; two daughters, Virginia Jordan of Edison and Mary Frances McGowan of Hazelhurst; and seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Gary Claxton, Tony Claxton, Casey Claxton, Rocky Claxton, Adam Cushman, Ashley Neal and Jerry Long. Pallbearers should assemble at Botsford Baptist Church at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive friends tonight (Wed., Sept. 17) from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mr. Jack D. Phillips
Mr. Jack D. Phillips, 76, of Waynesboro, Ga., entered into rest Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Augusta. Graveside services were held at Botsford Baptist Church Cemetery on Sunday, Sept. 21, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Mr. Phillips was a native of Maryland and had lived in Burke County for the past two years. He was a retired electrician and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II. He was Baptist by faith. Survivors include his son, Henry Phillips of Waynesboro; two daughters, Irene Pitts of Sylvania and Jackie Laird of Princess Anne, Md.; a sister, Shirley Northcutt of Waynesboro; two brothers, Thomas Phillips of Corpus Cristi, Texas and Donald Phillips of Salisbury, Md.; and eight grandchildren.
Mr. Roy Hillis
Mr. Roy Hillis, age 75, of 3550 Stoney Bluff Road, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 at his residence. Funeral services will be today (Wednesday, Sept. 24) at 10:30 a.m. at Corinth Christian Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Hillis was born in Burke County, Ga. and had lived in Girard most of his life. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech, an inspector for the Georgia Department of Agriculture, a store owner for 30 years, and was an elder and treasurer of Corinth Christian Church.
Survivors include his two sons, Stan R. Hillis of Girard and Mark L. Hillis of Mesa, Ariz.; his daughter, Cindi J. Hillis of Girard; six grandchildren, Lacey Hillis of Girard, David Hillis of Chandler, Ariz., Jonathan Hillis of Alexander and Jimmy Hillis, Jeffery Hillis and Adam Hillis, all of Mesa; and several great-grandchildren. Ms. Mollie Saxon Beard
Ms. Mollie Saxon Beard, born May 4, 1892 in Burke County, Ga., died at her home in Los Angeles, Calif., on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at the age of 111. She was among 41 known “super centenarians” (people age 110 or older) in the world, according to one gerontology research group in California. Ms. Beard was buried Friday, Sept. 5, in Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica, Calif. Ms. Beard was the daughter of the late Edward D. Saxon, a soldier of the Confederacy, and Susan Sharpe. She was a real daughter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, Margaret Jones Chapter #27 of Waynesboro. In addition to her daughter, Eunice Brandon, Ms. Beard is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Silas Jones, Sr.
The homegoing celebration for Mr. Silas Jones Sr. will be Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at 1 p.m. at Botts-ford Spring Baptist Church, with Pastor Darius Robinson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Jones leaves to cherish his memories; his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a sister, and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Patricia Renfroe Sasser
Mrs. Patricia Renfroe Sasser, 60, of 447 Rackley Road, Waynesboro, entered into rest at her residence Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 19, at 3 p.m. at the DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. A private interment was held later at Burke Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Sasser, a native of Douglas, Ga., was a homemaker and was previously employed by Chalker Publishing Company. She was a member of Rosemont Heights Baptist Church. Mrs. Sasser was preceded in death by her husband, Rupert Wayne “Pete” Sasser; and her parents, Thomas Ulmer Renfroe and Frances Kelly Renfroe Mobley.
Survivors include her son, Gene Parrish of Waynesboro; a stepson, Wayne Sasser of Waynesboro; two daughters, Rebecca Parrish of Waynesboro and Bobbie P. Shaw of Hephzibah; a stepdaughter, Mary Sasser of Gainesville, Ga.; a sister, Susan Mobley Sheppard of Waynesboro; three grandchildren, Dean Parrish, Ethan Ashe and Garrett Shaw; and two step-grandchildren, Nathan Sasser and Allan Sasser.
