MACON - Funeral services for LaVerne Owen, 85, of John Wesley Villas in Macon will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at the chapel of Hart’s Mortuary with the Rev. Creedy Hinshaw officiating. Burial will follow in Midway Methodist Cemetery in Cordele at 2:30 p.m.
Mrs. Owen died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004.
Mrs. Owen was a member of Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Robert Blane Owen and the daughter of the late Otis Adams and the late Sallie Dorough Adams. Mrs. Owen was retired from Peeler Hardware.
Mrs. Owen is survived by her daughter, June Byers of Macon; a son, Robert Herrington, Jr. of Phenix City, Al; three grandchildren, Kathy Welch of Macon, Cindy Grinsted of Macon, and Robert Herrington III of Columbus; seven great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Dock Adams; and three sisters, Irma McKey, Ann Province, and Buddy Wadsworth.
Visitation will be today from 5 until 7 p.m. at Hart’s Mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Central Georgia, P.O. Box 6533, Macon, Ga. 31208.

Malpass died at Crisp Regional Hospital Monday, Nov. 29, 2004.
He was born Sunday, March 7, 1965 in Atlanta and was the son of Clarence Benjamin Malpass and Mavis Cross Odom. He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Angela Malpass of Cordele; his father, Clarence Benjamin Malpass of Winder; his mother, Mavis Odom of Cordele; a brother, Jeff Malpass of Forsyth and a sister, Sheila Summers of Sycamore.

Charles Crisp Fulghum Jr.
ABBEVILLE - Funeral services for Charles Crisp Fulghum Jr., 87, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 2, 2004, in the Abbeville First Baptist Church. The Revs. Tim Hill and Jim Faircloth will officiate the services. Burial will follow in Stubbs Cemetery.
Mr. Fulghum died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, following a brief illness.
Born Jan. 7, 1917, he was the son of the late Charles Crisp Fulghum Sr. and Myrtle Bowen Fulghum. After graduating from Abbeville High School, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Mercer University in 1937, and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Mr. Fulghum served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a lieutenant in the Naval Supply Corps. Much of his service time was spent in the Phillipines on the island of Samar. After returning to Abbeville following his military service, he resumed the operation of the Fulghum Company Farm Supply Store and the Farmer’s Gin Company and Warehouse. He served as Postmaster in Abbeville from 1956-1983.
Mr. Fulghum was a lifelong member of Abbeville First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for more than 60 years and Sunday School Superintendent for 25 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood, Adult Choir and Men’s Sunday School Class. He also was a charter member of the Abbeville Lions Club and served on the Wilcox County Library Board for many years. He was widely known as an avid historian, especially local and Civil War history.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Gladine Culpepper Fulghum of Abbeville; a daughter and son-in-law, Edie and Clark Beusse of Dawsonville; a grandson, Charles Beusse of Dawsonville; a granddaughter, Emily Beusse of Dawsonville; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Abbeville First Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Jack Hammond, 10662 Highway 129, Abbeville, Ga., 31001.

CORDELE - Graveside services for Samuel Ulysses Collins were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Arabi Cemetery. The Revs. James Spires and Tim Clark conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
Buford Calhoun sang “Amazing Grace” and “O Come Angel Band” a cappella. The Rev. Danny Ray gave the closing prayer.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Funeral services for Joseph Thomas Turner of Orlando, formerly of Byromville, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Bethlehem Baptist Church. The Rev. Carlton Martin will officiate the services. Burial will follow in the Bethlehem Church Cemetery.
Mr. Turner died November 25, 2004.
Born in Dooling, he attended Union Academy and played baseball with the Negro Baseball League. He was married to the late Rosa Lee Smith for 52 years. He lived in Roselle, N.J., for 63 years and retired from Singer Manufacturing Company after 37 years of service. While with Singer, he was the vice president of their 8,000-member union. He was elected into the Union County Baseball Hall of Fame and was a 63-year-plus member, deacon and trustee of Union Baptist Church in Elizabeth, N.J. After retiring to Orlando, he joined Shiloh Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, the late Lafayette T. Turner.
Survivors include his children, Elnora Boston of Detroit, Mich., Freda T. Morris of Burbank, Calif., and Edward J. Turner of Orlando, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Deacon Army (Bertha) Lester of Byromville; a sister-in-law, Alberta (Deacon Henry) King of Cordele; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Born on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 1913 in Dodge County, he was the son of the late Samuel Lee Hilliard and Annie Lee Brown Hilliard. He was retired from the retail grocery business having owned and operated Hilliard's Grocery in Rhine for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Flanders Hilliard of Warwick; two sons and their wives, Cliff and Jennie Hilliard of Warwick and Van and Sue Hilliard of Dacula; a brother, Roy Hilliard of Abbeville; a sister, Nell Williams of Rhine; a granddaughter and her husband, Amy and Bob Arch of Cherokee, N.C. and grandsons,Samuel Jacob Hilliard of Warwick, and Wesley Hilliard of Dacula. He was preceded in death by brothers, Stan Hilliard, Tal Hilliard, Archie Hilliard, Sam Hilliard, Jr. and Ray Hilliard.

Born Friday, Apr. 16, 1943 in West Palm Beach, Fla., he was the son of the late Henry Livingston Stubbs and Ella Jane Howle Stubbs. He was employed by Georgia Pacific as a Purchasing Agent and a member of the Union Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife Brenda Burnette Stubbs of Cordele; a daughter and son-in-law, Kristy and Brad Henderson of Savannah; a brother, Marvin Stubbs of Windsor, Ca.; and a granddaughter, Audrey Grace Henderson of Savannah. CORDELE - Funeral services for V.C. Hilliard were held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Rhine. Rev. Dan Jones, Rev. Larry Thompson, and Rev. Bill Jones conducted the service. Sam Hilliard gave the eulogy. Music was provided by Sheryl Bearden, Pianist, and Margie Jones, organist. David Hilliard sang "Surely The Presence" and Noris Ann Ward sang "Sweet Beulah Land". Pallbearers were Henry Hilliard, Phil Hilliard, Ricky Hilliard, Todd Hilliard, Dykes Hilliard, and Jay Hilliard. Honorary Pallbearers were Deacons of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Buford Tanner conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements. Music was provided by Beth Bullock, organist, and Judy Stone, pianist. Sherry Stone sang "Holy Ground". The service was closed with Mrs. Stone and Richard Nutt singing "I’m Feeling Might Fine".
Pallbearers were Anthony Burnette, Daniel Burnette, Darfus Holcomb, Rex Bullock, Al Crenshaw and Larry Bullock. Burial was in Seville Cemetery.
