MACON - Stan Stephens, 70, of Montezuma, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 8, 2005, in the chapel of Hughes & Wright Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Zion Hope Cemetery in Crisp County.

Mr. Stephens was a native of Crisp County and was a self-employed textiles engineer. He is preceded in death by his wife, Sammie Dickerson Stephens

Survivors include his son, Standford “Steve” O. Stephens Jr. and wife Loren of Montezuma; daughter, Sammie "Tammy” Stephens Roberts and husband Robert of Dawsonville; brother, Thomas Edmund Stephens Jr. of Cobb; sisters, Dorothy Crook of Carrollton and Cheryl Arnold of Hawkinsville; grandchildren, Brandy Kelly Dowdy, Jonathan Stowers, Storm Roberts, Standford “Tripp” O. Stephens III, Taylor Stephens and Jessica “Jessie” Stephens.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, April 7 from 6-8 p.m. at Hughes and Wright Funeral Home.

Evans ‘Junior’ Dowdell

CORDELE - Funeral services for Evans “Junior” Dowdell, 91, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery. The Rev. Willie Grover will officiate the services.

Mr. Dowdell died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, in Crisp Regional Nursing and Rehab.

Born Feb. 28, 1914, in Sumter County, Mr. Dowdell was the youngest child and only son of the late James Pope Dowdell and Nancy Holmes Dowdell. He was preceded in death by his only sister, Annie Dowdell Harris. At a young age, he joined Shady Grove Baptist Church in Sumter County and also attended public schools in Sumter County. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving four years. He was a veteran of World War II and was honorably discharged in December 1945. He worked with his father and mother for many years at Dowdell Funeral Home, and later became a bank courier. He retired after several years at this job. Junior was an active member of the American Legion Post 542 until his health began to fail.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Denver Chaney Dobbs of Lawrenceville; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one nephew, Comm. James D. (Lucille) Harris; several great nieces and nephews; several cousins, including a devoted one, Martha Robinson of Tift County; and a devoted friend, Rosebud Grant.

Della Mae Rouse

CORDELE - Funeral services for Della Mae Rouse will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the sanctuary of Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Hardshell Cemetery. Pastor Johnny B. Dean will officiate the services.

Mrs. Rouse died Tuesday, April 5, 2005.

Survivors include her mother, Annie Bell Dixon of Cordele; her god-daughter, Brenijia Necolle Oliver of Cordele; a sister, Ethel Neal of Tampa, Fla.; a god-sister, Brenda Ford of Cordele; brothers, Emmit Roundtree, Earnest Roundtree and Sam Roundtree all of Cordele, and Charles Roundtree of Belle Glade, Fla.; and cousins, Elizabeth Telfair, Mamie Mapp, William Mapp, Mary Woods and Pastor Johnny B. Dean all of Cordele.

Bobby Lee Ray

BELLE GLADE, Fla. - Funeral services for Bobby Lee Ray, formerly of Cordele, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the sanctuary of Little Rock Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Little Rock Cemetery. The Rev. Lorendo Ray will officiate the services.

Mr. Ray died Monday, April 4, 2005.

Survivors include a daughter, Nikita Ray of Florida; four grandchildren; brothers, Manuel Ray, Ozzie (Hattie) Ray and Ruby J. Ray all of Cordele, and Elgie (Darlene) Ray of Warwick; sisters, Bernice Ray, Alice (Floyd) Bryon and Odessa (Eddie) Nixon all of Cordele, Velma Reid of Albany, Lorraine Robinson of Miami, Fla., Glenda Ray-Beasley and Belinda (Min. Charles) Jackson both of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; aunts, Florene (L.B.) Richardson of Winter Haven, Fla., Mattie Lee Ray of Arabi, and Clara Mae Lewis of Cordele; and one uncle, Deacon C.R. (Lucinda) Ray of Arabi.

Eddie Thompson

CORDELE - Eddie Thompson, 58, of Cordele died at his residence Wednesday, April 6, 2005.

Born Sunday, May 26, 1946, in Savannah, he was the son of Dorothy Luree Thompson of Bloomingdale and the late Claudine Thompson, and the husband of Nella Frank Scott Thompson.

Mr. Thompson was employed as a maintenance engineer for the Georgia State Department of Defense. He was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he was a member of the adult choir. He was also an active member of the Richard T. Turner Masonic Lodge of Pooler, Yaarab Shrine Temple of Atlanta, Arab Guard Unit of Shrine of Atlanta, the Sweet Water Shrine Club of Douglasville where he was a past president, Crape Myrtle Chapter OES of Albany and the Pateville Community Club.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services Inc. Interment will follow at Zion Hope Cemetery in Crisp County.

He is survived by his wife, Nella Frank Scott Thompson of Cordele; his mother, Dorothy Luree Thompson of Bloomingdale; his daughters, Melissa T. and Lester Phillips of Eden, Marie Reddick of Guyton, Ashley Thompson of Rincon; step-sons, Darrell and Kathy Raines of Woodstock, Scotty Raines of Cordele, and Kyle and Lynn Raines of Eatonton; brothers, Neal Thompson of Port Wentworth, Mack Thompson of Marlow, Bobby Thompson and Larry Thompson, both of Bloomingdale, and Terry Thompson of South Guyton; sisters, Martha and Aubrey Davis and Judy Brant, all of Brooklet; grandchildren, Lester Phillips Jr., Aaron Phillips, Justice Reddick, Miliah Reddick and Madisin Raines and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lavon Thompson.

Mr. Ridley died April 9, 2005.

Mrs. Wilson died April 11, 2005.

George Fleming Baldwin

CORDELE - Funeral services for George Fleming Baldwin, 21, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005, at the A.S. Clark Elementary School auditorium. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery.

Mr. Baldwin died on Tuesday, April 12, 2005.

He leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Mrs. Shirley Baldwin Ray; father, Mr. Eddie L. Ray. He also leaves a host of other sorrowing relatives and friends.

Sadie B. Bridges

CORDELE - Sadie Best Bridges, 96, died at Crisp Regional Hospital Wednesday, April 20, 2005.

She was born Friday, July 9, 1908 in Bishopville, S.C. and was the daughter of the late Henry Ben Best and Margaret Jane Skinner Best, and the widow of Howard Elliott Bridges, Sr. Mrs. Bridges was a homemaker and a member of Cordele First United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2005 at Sunnyside Cemetery.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Sadie and Charles Glover and Patricia and Joel Haley, all of Cordele; a son and daughter-in-law, John Gordon and Sandra Bridges of Farmington, Missouri; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Howard Elliot “Sonny” Bridges, Jr. and siblings, Horace Best, Harry Best, Edward Best, Casey Ben Best, Ruth Page Davenport, Jennie Webb and Ruby Best.

E.J. Green

CORDELE - Funeral services E.J. Green will be heldat 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2005 in the Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery, veterans section. The Rev. K.M. Williams will officiate.

Mr. Green died April 20, 2005, at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.

The son of the late Mrs. Iola W. Anderson and Eddie Green, he was born Sept. 29, 1958. A 1976 graduate of Crisp County High School, he attended the Cedar Program before joining the Army in 1984. He was employed at the Big Al’s grocery and was a member of Greater Morris Tabernacle Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Iola W. Anderson and his brother, Jeffery Green.

Survivors include his companion, Jennifer Doster; children, Ulekya Hill, Andrea Felton, Carlos Woods, Tanika Green and Rasheeda Green; sisters, Mary (R.C.) Henderson, Shirley F. Green, Minnie (Richard) Sanders, Linda Gail Green, Geraldine Johnson Ray, all of Cordele, Betty Peterson of Jonesboro, Geneva Johnson Edwards of Rochester, NY, and Dorothy Johnson of New Orleans, LA; brothers, Bobby Anderson, Anthony Green, Kermit (Lillian) Green, Ricky (Marlanya) Anderson and Benjamin Green, all of Cordele, Robert Johnson and Elijah Johnson, both of Rochester, NY, and Freddie Johnson of Cordele; aunts and uncles, Mary Revere of Atlanta, Lizzie Banks of Hapeville, and Thomas James Wilson of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

WARNER ROBINS - Adam H. Greene, 80, died on Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at Elberta Health Care. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, 2005 at the First United Methodist Church of Warner Robins. Burial will be held at 4:00 PM in Woodlawn Cemetery in Eastman, GA. Visitation will be Friday, April 22, 2005, from 6 - 9 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Mr. Greene was born in Cordele. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Warner Robins. He was a clerk of the Superior Court for 21 years and worked in the District Attorney's office of Bibb County for 20 years. He was a third district Superior Court clerk of the year, chairman of the Superior Court Clerk Association for three years, member of the Jurors Association, and the Macon Bar Association Liberty Bell award recipient in 1989. Adam was a former member of the Exchange Club of Macon and the Mable Lodge. He also served in the Reserve National Guard for 39 years and was active duty in World War II. Mr. Greene has a 33rd degree Mason with a 50 year pin.

His parents, Monroe and Annie Greene; brother, Loron Greene; former wife Virginia Greene, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Mary W. Greene of Warner Robins; step- children, Rev. Garry Willis (Gail) of Macon, Michael Windham of Unadilla, Nancy Gardner (Greg) of Warner Robins, Wanda Darley of Macon, Brian Windham of Atlanta, and George Windham (Sherry)of Warner Robins; niece, Laverne Smith (Ben) of Abbeville, Alabama; nephew, Billy Greene (Frances)of Cordele; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Alonza “Dick” Hooten, Jr.

BUTLER - Funeral services for Mr. Alonza “Dick” Hooten, Jr. of Butler will be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2005 in the Friendship Baptist Church of Butler. Burial will follow in West End Cemetery in Butler. Bentley Funeral Directors of Cordele and Reynolds are in charge of services.

Sadie Best Bridges

CORDELE - Graveside services for Sadie Best Bridges were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2005, in Sunnyside Cemetery. The Rev. Tommy Mason and Layman Lee Guerry conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

The eulogy was given by Vicki Tipps. Beth Haley sang “In The Garden” acappella and J. Banks Haley accompanied himself on the guitar and sang “Home Where I Belong” and Miss Sadie’s favorite song, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.”

W.C. Griggs Jr.

PINEHURST -- Funeral services for Mr. W.C. Griggs Jr. will be held at 3 p.m. today, April 24, 2005, at Pinehurst United Methodist Church with interment in Walnut Cemetery in Unadilla.

Mr. Griggs died Friday, April 22 at Sumter Regional Hospital in Americus.

Born in Unadilla, he was the son of the late W.C. Griggs and Mary Pennington Griggs. He was a member of Pinehurst United Methodist Church and was an United States Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He served as a navigator on a B-17 bomber which was shot down one week before D-Day and after parachuting to safety, he was captured and was a POW for almost a year. His medals include the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. He was a Pinehurst businessman after succeeding his father in the cotton warehouse business. He was the owner of Planters Warehouse, Griggs Gin Company and Griggs Farms. He was associate with several trade organizations, serving terms as president and chairman of the board of the Cotton Warehouse Association of America, president of the South Atlantic Cotton Warehouse Association and president of the Georgia Cotton Warehouse Association. He also served on the National Cotton Council Board of Directors. For many years he served as a member of the Dooly County Economic Development Authority. He was a past-president of Albany Oil Mill. He was a member of Millwood Masonic Lodge # 198 F & AM and the Dooly County Farm Bureau.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Warren Griggs of Unadilla and Marion “Buddy” Griggs of Palm Coast, Fla. His sister, Martha G. Clark of Jacksonville, Fla., also preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Coker Griggs of Pinehurst; daughters, Gloria Griggs Conner of Unadilla and Pamela (Cim) Jenkins of Douglas; sons, W.C. “Billy” (Jane Russell) Griggs III of Unadilla and George C. (Laura Grogg) Griggs of Pinehurst; brother, John Durward Griggs of Macon; grandchildren, Kimberly Conner (Jeff) Barron of Unadilla, Erin Max (Kimberly Brown) Conner III of Vienna, Michael (Alicia Forehand) Conner of Pinehurst, Angie Griggs of Atlanta, Christy Griggs (Ray) Deal of Hilton Head, S.C., Keri (Brian) Dolan of St. Simons Island, William C. “Clegg” (Aimie Adair) Griggs IV of Unadilla, Jacob (Becky Fender) of Pinehurst, Nathaniel (Alicia Rucker) of Unadilla, Travis Jenkins of Douglas, and Joanna Jenkins of Douglas; great-grandchildren, Rebekah, Rachel and Bethany Barron of Unadilla, Anna Elizabeth Deal of Hilton Head, S.C., Patrick Russell Dolan of St. Simons Island, Elizabeth Karlyn Griggs of Unadilla, Caroline Conner and Erin Max Conner IV of Vienna and Ethan Rhett Griggs of Pinehurst.
