Joel T. Crenshaw Jr.
Mr. Joel T. Crenshaw Jr., 62, of Waynesboro died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2003, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at Hopeful Baptist Church, with Mr. Dick Byne and Mr. Bud Stroud, officiating. Burial followed at Hopeful Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Crenshaw was born in Augusta and was a lifelong resident of Burke County. He was employed as an engineer at Augusta Newsprint. Mr. Crenshaw was a member of the Board of Elections for Burke County and a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was preceded in death by his mother, Leona Blackstone Crenshaw.
Mr. Crenshaw is survived by two sons, Joel Ashley Crenshaw of Waynesboro and Joseph Crenshaw of Woodstock; a daughter, Shelley Walden of Woodstock; his father, Joseph Thomas Crenshaw Sr. of Augusta; one sister, Brenda McLeod of Augusta; and four grandchildren, Ansley Cren-shaw, Alli Crenshaw, Carter Crenshaw and Chandler Crenshaw. Pallbearers were Wayne Crockett, Bob Larkin, Dan Fowler, Johnny McLeod, Mike Parrish, Leonard Howard, Jerry Kiser and Mike Fowler.
Mrs. Sara M. Jones, 88,
died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2003 in Hendersonville, N.C.
Memorial services were held 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at the First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro, with the Revs. Jim Knight and Robert L. (Tre) Smith III officiating.
Mrs. Jones lived most of her life in Waynesboro with her husband of more than 50 years, John J. Jones, who died in 1988. Born Sara Elizabeth Moore in Bishopville, S.C., she received her undergraduate education at Limestone College and the University of Florida, followed by graduate school in social work at Tulane. After some time as a social worker in her native South Carolina, she married Mr. Jones and moved to Waynesboro where she taught English in the high school and later served as the Burke County librarian. A gifted and creative woman, she wrote poetry, music and a variety of articles, played the piano, and assisted in the design and decoration of various buildings and gardens, including the present Burke County Library. She loved flowers. Mrs. Jones was very active in the community, especially First Presbyterian Church of Waynesboro, both in its spiritual work and in areas of church activity that benefited from her creative talents.
Mrs. Jones is survived by her son, Seaborn Jones of Atlanta; two daughters, Cynthia G. Jones of Hendersonville and Elizabeth Jones Mayers of Boston, Mass.; and one grandchild, Peter K. Mayers of Boston.Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 810 Myrick St., Waynesboro, Ga. 30830.
Mr. Willie E. Williams, 86,
went to be with the Lord Sunday, Jan. 4, 2004.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Claude R. Boyd-Caratozzolo Funeral Home, 1785 Deer Park Ave., Deer Park, N.Y. Interment will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y.
Mr. Williams was the son of John and Rosa Saxon Williams of Waynesboro. He graduated from Burke County schools, served in the Army during World War II and was employed by the Veterans Administration until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; his brothers, John, Georgia and Francis; and his much adored sisters, Cleo and Ethel.
Survivors include his daughters, Valerie Williams of Wyandanch, N.Y., Melanie (Darryl) Walker of Lansing, Mich. and Lillie Mae (Francis) Blake of Terre Haute, Ind.; brothers, James Williams and Benjamin Williams, both of Waynesboro; five grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Mrs. Edna Clotiel Wooten Nunnally, 84,
of Sylvania died Monday, Jan. 12, 2004 at Syl-View Health Care Center.
Visitation was held Tuesday, Jan. 13, and funeral services will be held today (Wednesday, Jan. 14), at 2 p.m. at Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Warren Devevo officiating. Burial will take place in Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Nunnally was a retired waitress and a member of Harmony Methodist Church. She was predeceased by her husband, Miller Joe Nunnally.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Allen and Doris Nunnally, of Sylvania and Joe Miller Nunnally of Waynesboro; four sisters, Marie W. Nix, Juanita W. Warren, Helouise W. Deloach and Viola W. Smith, all of Hampton County, S.C.; five brothers, Dean Wooten of Springfield and Roy Wooten, Ray Wooten, Franklin Wooten and Nathan Wooten, all of Hampton County; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Thompson-Strickland-Waters Funeral Home in Sylvania, Ga., is in charge of the arrangements.
Jordan Emory Wiggins Sr., 52,
went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at Piney Grove Baptist Church on Highway 56 in McBean. The Rev. Nevil Smith officiated. Interment services followed at 3 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Beaufort, S.C.
Mr. Wiggins was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lester and Doris Wiggins. He recently gave his heart to Jesus and became a Christian, and was loved by many.
He is survived by his wife, Frances Lynn Jones Wiggins; four daughters, Vicki Wiggins, Donna Miller, Michelle Mooney and Jennifer Wiggins; one son, Jordan Wiggins Jr.; two sisters, Judy Whisnant and Polly Brock; three brothers, Cecil Tingle, John Wiggins and Joe Wiggins; 10 grandchildren, Patricia, Tyler, Bradley, Kimberly, Pierce, Halli, Alex, Jackson, Michelle and Brianna. Additional survivors are aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Keith Neal, Ernest “Bubba” Quick, Larry Bush, Mike Miller, Gene Frazier, Richard Logan, Tom Balliet and Jay Byrd.
The family received friends on Friday, Jan. 9, at the Poteet Funeral Home in Augusta.

Sarah Hirleman Oppenheimer died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004
at home in Mobile, Ala. Graveside services will be held at the family cemetery on Applewhite Plantation in Burke County, at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 17.
She is survived by two sons William W. Oppenheimer and Edward S. Oppenheimer; two daughters-in-law Nancy and Anne; and grandchildren, Nancy, Harris, Johnston and Julia.
Memorials may be made to a favorite charity.
Mrs. Pauline “Polly” Rachels Macken
died Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004 at Burke Medical Center. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Jan. 21), at Magnolia Cemetery, Waynesboro, with the Rev. Henry K. Erwin officiating. Mrs. Macken, a native of Jefferson County, lived her adult life in Burke County where she retired as Assistant Director with Farmers Home Administration. She was a member of Waynes-boro First United Methodist Church, Ladies Golf Association and Ladies Bridge Club.
Mrs. Macken is survived by her husband, William B. Macken Jr. of Waynesboro; two daughters, Susan E. Macken of Gainesville and Billie B. Macken of Statesboro; a brother, Frank Rachels of Martinez; and three sisters, Sue Rainer of Birmingham, Ala., Geneva Debose and Mary Jo McNeely, both of Augusta. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ladies Bridge Club and members of the Ladies Golf Association.

Mr. Collins was a lifelong resident of Burke County and was a retired farmer and member of Piney Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ollie Belle Collins and children, Georgia Ann Collins, Floyd Minus Collins, Miriam Babb and Danny Collins.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Salemi of Waynesboro; a son, Jerry Collins of Waynesboro; and 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Alice Louise Sherman, 51,
entered into rest Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004.Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, with Father Ted Atwood officiating.
Mrs. Sherman was born in Washington, D.C. and moved from Gatlinburg, Tenn., to Waynesboro three years ago. She was Christian by faith.
Mrs. Sherman was preceded in death by her father, Gardiner Sherman Jr. and her son, Charles E. Lee Jr. (1983). She is survived by her mother, Ann A. Franklin of Waynesboro; three daughters, Shelly Sharpe of Waynesboro, Allison McMillan of Cleveland, Ga. and Ashley Lee of Washington, Ga.; a son, Zack Lee of Ossian, Ind.; and a brother, William Gardiner Sherman of Las Vegas, Nev.
