Mrs. Frankie McPherson
Mrs. Frankie J. McPherson, age 86 of Talking Rock, passed away Nov. 10, 2002 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Wylene and Charles Padgett, Jasper, Carolyn and Bruce Swann of Marietta and Wanda and Danny Jordan of Ball Ground. Eleven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 from the Salem Baptist Church in Jasper with the Revs. Robert Allen and James Thompson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Chuck Padgett, Billy Parker, Danny and Michael Jordan, Chris Hogan and Gordon Jones. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Eunice Young
Mrs. Eunice Young, age 87, passed away Nov. 10, 2002 at her residence.
Survivors include one sister, Wenell Chastain of Jasper, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Revs. Hollis Crook and Clay Fountain officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were: Tony, Kerry and Randy Cain, Chris Watson, Keith Gilbert and James Chastain.
Charles Schutt
Mr. Charles (Chuck) Schutt, age 45 of Canton, Ga., passed away Nov. 9, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Schutt is survived by his wife, Karen Schutt of Canton; parents, Paul and Suzi Schutt of Roswell; two daughters, Ashley and Amy Schutt of Canton; brothers, Steve Schutt of Suwanne, Kevin and Kerry Schutt, both of Johnson City, Tn.; and a sister, Andera Grindsteff of Woodstock.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13 from the Pleasant Hill Christian Church on Hwy. 108 in Jasper with Minister Reese Faucett, Doug Lanier and Bill Keeling officiating. The following served as pallbearers: Steve, Kevin, Kerry and Michael Schutt, Brian Grindsteff and Lee Britt. Honorary pallbearers were: Troy and Buddy Cruch, Butch Cummings, Howard Cochran, Doug Reed, Tommy Dunagan and Tom Zull. The family did accept flowers or donations may be made to ALS Association or Country Side Hospice of Dalton.
John Honea
Mr. John Honea, age 71, passed away Nov. 15, 2002 at North Georgia Medical Center in Ellijay.
Survivors include his wife, Karen L. Honea of Marble Hill; sons, Dale Honea of Chattanooga, Tn., Darrell Honea of Sugar Hill, Daniel Honea of Macon and Johnathan Honea of Marble Hill; daughters, Donna Shelley of Macon, Dana Bailey of Chattanooga, Delene Strickland of Carrollton and Marie Thomas of Marble Hill; brothers, Claude Honea of Grand Rapids, Mi., Jack Honea of Carrollton and Willie Honea of Lilburn; sisters, Grace Southerland and Mary Sharpe, both of Jasper, Frances Foster of Smyrna and Addie Honea of Augusta. Eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Denise Honea; brothers, Paul and Roy; and great-grandchild, Timmothy.
The funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Hollis Crook officiating. Interment was in the Long Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jesse and Wes Honea, Willie, David, Junior and Wayne Southerland.
Stephen Griffeth
Mr. Stephen Emmett Griffeth, age 87 of Tate, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 14, 2002 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper after an extended illness.
A descendant of the early settlers of Pickens County, Mr. Griffeth spent his life in his beloved township of Tate. He was a noted historian having written one book, The Many Facets of Tate, a historical account of the life and works of this North Georgia town, published in 1998.
An employee of Georgia Marble Co. for 46 years, he had a vast knowledge of all phases of the work involved in the marble business having begun in the shipping department and working through all departments. When he retired in 1984, he was the memorial estimator and was in charge of all orders and foreign purchases.
Mr. Griffeth was a WW II veteran, a member of the Tate Masonic Lodge #485 F&AM. He was a charter member of the Tate Community Association and served as its treasurer for over 30 years.
Mr. Griffeth was the son of the late John Emmett and Pearl Eubanks Griffeth. He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Jackie Griffeth, Marietta; sisters and brother-in-law, Jane Griffeth of Tate and Vivian and Marvin Elkins of Duluth; nephew, Stephen Kelly Griffeth, Marietta; three nieces, Cathy Elkins, Dallas, Tx., Melissa and Jeff Haas, Duluth, and Amy and Mark Denicore, Waterford, Va.; great-nieces, Carrie Vaughn, Duluth, and Sophie Denicore, Waterford; a brother, John Howard Griffeth, preceded him in death. He is also survived by many aunts and cousins.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Eddie Martin and Von Hinton officiating. Burial was in Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Tom Boswell, Dr. Bryan Hooker and Robert L. Johnston serving as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers were: Charles Miller, Jeff Haas, Ted Bryant, Roy Griffith Holcomb, Bill Pickett, Bill Cagle, Frank Eubanks and Donal Dorsey. The family requests memorial gifts be made to the Salvation Army.
Catharine Malone
Mrs. Catharine Jones Malone, age 85, formerly of Ball Ground and Roswell, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002 in Cleveland, Tn. She was born August 3, 1917 in Smithville, Ga., moved to Ball Ground when she was 10, graduated from Canton High School and was a 1937 graduate of Agnes Scott College.
Mrs. Malone was the beloved wife of the late Charles Lane Malone for 56 years. She taught social studies for 20 years and influenced countless students’ love for history and government. She was a devoted member of Ball Ground First Baptist Church for over 50 years, serving in Training Union and Women’s Missionary Union leadership positions, teaching Sunday School and writing the church’s history. She was the first president of the Anetsa Ga-da Garden Club of Ball Ground, a long-time trustee of R.T. Jones Memorial Library in Canton, president and charter member of Cherokee County Historical Society, Cherokee County High School Teacher of the Year, member of the Hightower DAR and an active part of numerous other church, school and civic organizations.
She was dearly loved and will be missed by her family and friends, that includes her son, Charles L. Malone Jr. and wife Sara of Cleveland, Tn.; daughters, Cathie M. Brown and husband Ross of Irvine, Ky. and Connie M. Sharenko and husband David of Roswell; grandchildren, Carey and Tom Pierce of Frisco, Tx., Susan Malone and Katie and Derrick Stephens of Cookeville, Tn., Roger and Jennifer Brown of Auburn, Al., David and Stacey Brown of Louisville, Ky., Philip and Callie Brown and Nathan and Nancy Brown of Lexington, Ky., Stephen Sharenko of Athens, Zach Sharenko of Atlanta and Alex and Ben Sharenko of Roswell; and great-granddaughter, Grayson Brown of Louisville.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2p.m. from the Chapel of Huey Funeral Home in Canton with the Revs. Charles Walker and James Wofford officiating. Interment followed in Ball Ground First Baptist Church Cemetery. Lloyd Woodard
Mr. Lloyd Leon Woodard, age 72 of Ducktown, Tn., passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2002 at the Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue Ridge, Ga.
Survivors include Rebecca Woodard and Jerry Payne of Alpharetta; stepsons, Sonny and Mike Reeves, both of Jasper; step-daughter, Sherry Reeves of Jefferson. Five step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. Mr. Woodward was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Debbie Johnson.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. from the graveside at Lake Forest Memorial Park in Jasper. Local Chapter 47 DAV was in charge of military rites. Pallbearers were: Sonny and Mike Reeves, Jerry Payne, Richard Thompson, Audi and Harold Johnson. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Charlie Holcomb
Mr. Charlie N. Holcomb, age 90 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002 at Chulio Hills Nursing Home in Rome, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Oma Holcomb of Jasper; son, Jerry Holcomb of Griffin; daughter, Brenda Adams, Blue Ridge; stepson, Jerry Bearden of Rome; brothers, Howard and Jack Holcomb, both of Marietta; sisters, Nora Nix of Ball Ground and Edna Ridings of Powder Springs. Eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by a son, Buddy Holcomb.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Nov. 7 at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with interment at 4 p.m. in the Beech Creek Methodist Church Cemetery in Rome with the Revs. Clyde Brock and Clyde Saunders officiating. Daniel Farmer
Mr. Daniel Farmer, age 24 of Jasper, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 22, 2002 at his residence in Jasper.
Survivors include his mother, Sharon Quarles Crowe, Jasper; step-father, Marvin Hitt, Jasper; great-grandmothers, Edith Harper of Dalton, and Ethel Quarles of Crandell, Ga.; one daughter, Shaleaha Farmer, Rome; one brother, Josh McFalls, Jasper; one sister, Haley Farmer, Dalton; special aunts and uncles, Belinda Cantrell and Matt Quarles, both of Chatsworth, Kim Thorton and Glennis Quarles, both of Dalton, Terri “Lulu” Smith, Atlanta, and Kenny Quarles, Crandall.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Walter Taylor, Danny Duckett and Frankie Wilson officiating. Fannie Gentry
Mrs. Fannie Mae Gentry, age 82 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002 at Mountainside Health Care.
Survivors include one sister, Mary Jewell Fountain and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Revs. Gus Smith and John Holaway officiating. Interment followed in Yellow Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The following served as pallbearers: Ben and Patrick Fountain, David Estes, Johnny Merrell, Seth Jones and Allen Morgan.
Pamela Stephens
Mrs. Pamela Jill Stephens, age 37 of Cherry Log, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Stephens of Cherry Log; two sons, Richard Gage and Franklin Daniel Stephens III, both of Cherry Log; mother, Joan Lemier; father, Stephen Fitton; brothers, Douglas and Paul Fitton; and sister, Susan Sude.
A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced by Roper Funeral Home of Jasper.
Christopher Hammontree
Mr. Christopher Columbus Hammontree, age 99 of Jasper, passed away Friday, Nov. 29, 2002 at Grandview Nursing Center in Jasper.
Survivors include his wife, Ester Hammontree of Jasper; daughter, Barbara Lowe of Blue Ridge; grandson, Danny Lowe; and one great-grandson, several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Brock officiating. Interment followed in the Sharp Top Baptist Church Cemetery.
Andrew Thomas
Mr. Andrew Thomas, age 88 of Auburn, Ga., passed away Nov. 26, 2002. Born March 21, 1914 in Murray County to the late Ira Stanford and Nora Leatherwood Thomas, he has resided in Bartow County for the past 30 years. He was a retired residential carpenter and a member of Long Swamp Baptist Church in Jasper.
Survivors include his wife, Cora Jones Thomas of Auburn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Nora Lee and George Riggs of Homer, and Patsy and Billy Still of Auburn; sons and daughters-in-law, Bud and Dot Thomas of Hoschton, Jerry and Linda Thomas of Canton, Donald Thomas of Auburn and Rick Thomas of Bold Springs; sister, Mary Trusty of Covington. Eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27 from the Chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Shuford Jones officiating. Interment was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
George McFarland
George McFarland, age 64 of Canton, passed away Nov. 26, 2002 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Sue McFarland of Canton; brothers, Jack McFarland of Roswell, Allen and Bob McFarland, both of Jasper, and Sam and Clyde McFarland, both of Canton; and sister, Ruby Wallace of Canton.
The funeral service was held Nov. 29 at 2 p.m. from Huey Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Edwin Bishop, Mark Henson, Lloyd Burgess and Bobby McFarland officiating. Interment was in Cherokee Memorial Park.
Ivan McWhorter
Ivan McWhorter, age 89 of Marietta, passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002. A Pickens County native, Mr. McWhorter was retired from Lockheed. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Dogwood Camping Club and Noonday Baptist Church of Marietta.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel McWhorter; son, Grady McWhorter of Marietta; daughter, Martha Hughes of Marietta. Three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday from Noonday Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Sandidge officiating. Interment was in Mountain View Park Cemetery in Marietta. Contributions may be made to Noonday Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 4121 Canton Rd. NE, Marietta, Ga. 30066. Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Holcombe
Mrs. Mary Holcombe, age 70 of Ball Ground, passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 at her residence. She was an employee with the poultry plant and a member of the Waleska Road Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Randy, Johnny, Michael and Joey Holcombe, all of Ball Ground, Rusty Holcombe, Talking Rock, and Tony Holcombe of Canton; sisters, Lela Wallen of Lafayette and Helen Young of Waleska. Twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.

Dorothy Gentry
Dorothy G. Gentry, age 72 of Dawsonville, passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002 at Mountain Healthcare Center in Jasper following an extended illness.
Mrs. Gentry was a lifelong resident of Dawson County. She retired from Sweet-Orr with over 30 years of service and was a member of Amicalola Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, and parents, Joseph and Lourain Chumbley.
Survivors include her son, Brad Gentry, Dawsonville; sisters, Bonnie Thurmond and Winnie Smith, both of Dawsonville, Beulah Thacker, Tate, and Lois Kellar, Stockbridge; brother, Grover Chumbley, Marble Hill; sisters-in-law, Mamie Goode and Bonnie Gentry, both of Dawsonville.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. from Amicalola Baptist Church with the Revs. Lawton Burt and Dean Pugh officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Bearden Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
