John Williams III
John Dudley Williams, III, age 73 of Big Canoe, Ga., passed Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007 at his home.
John was born in Guilford County, N.C. in 1933. He lived in Greensboro and Sedgefield, N.C. most of his young life. He was an excellent horseman and won horse show championships in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, and rode with the Sedgefield Hunt. John graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1954 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. That same summer he married his wife of 52 years, Sally.
John's first career was with Xerox Corporation where he worked for 17 years. As a Major Accounts Manager in Atlanta, John served such clients as The Coca Cola Co., Southern Co. and Southern Railway. After an early retirement, John started a second career as editor of ALTA NET NEWS tennis publication, where he served for 22 years. His tenure with Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association was the happiest of experiences. During that time, John authored a book, ALTA, Its History, Humor & Hors D'oeuvres. John was a lifetime Honorary Member of the ALTA.
John owned property in Big Canoe, Ga. since the early 1970s, but did not become a full time resident until 1994. From that time he volunteered as chairman of the Tennis Committee, Lakes and Marinas Committee and as a member of the Trails Committee. John and his family were Charter Members of the Big Canoe Chapel.
Surviving family members are his wife, Sally S. Williams; daughter, Suzanne C. Abbott; son, John Alexander Williams; and granddaughters, Gabrielle and Christina Abbott and Olivia and Charlotte Williams. His father, Dr. J.D. Williams, Jr., and his mother, Rose Belsham Williams, of Greensboro, N.C., preceded him in death.
A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 9 at 2 p.m. in Big Canoe Chapel with the Rev. Lamar Helms officiating. Memorials may be made to Big Canoe Chapel, 10455 Big Canoe, Jasper, Ga. 30143.
Betty Stancil
Betty Louisa Brown Stancil, 83 of Nelson, passed away Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007 due to complications from Parkinson's Disease.
Betty was born March 6, 1923 in Nelson, Ga. where she lived most of her life. Betty was the sixth of seven children born to Melinda Payne Brown and William Brown.
Ms. Stancil was a revered educator in both Pickens and Cherokee counties, where she taught for 35 years. Not only did she have a passion for education, she also loved art, particularly Monet and van Gogh. Betty loved music and reading. She was often seen sitting in her favorite chair reading everything from the Bible to The Atlanta Journal.
Betty was a lifelong learner. Independent and ahead of her time, she completed a college education, living away from her family to attend school in Milledgeville, then transferring to North Georgia College, where she lived with her sister Bonnie. Betty loved to travel, which she did often with her family. She enjoyed nature, especially the changing of the seasons and birds.
Betty was a dedicated and loving sister, wife, mother and grandmother. Bedridden for several years, her positive attitude and dry humor made her a favorite among those who cared for her. She will be missed, but always remembered and loved by all who knew her.
Betty is survived by her son, Jeffrey Stancil, daughter-in-law, Rhonda Pearl Stancil, and grandchildren Valerie, Thomas Clark and Vanessa Stancil, all of Nelson; two brothers, Wayne Brown of Nelson, Bill Brown of Memphis, Tn.; one sister, Bonnie Brown Densmore of Nelson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Grady Stancil, sisters, Essie Brown Stickland, Effie Brown Goss, and brother, Henry Brown, all of Nelson.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 13 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home in Jasper with the Rev. Richard Griffith officiating. Interment at Bethesda Cemetery in Nelson followed the service. Roper Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Joyce Wilson
Mrs. Joyce Wilson, age 68 of Loxahatchee, Fl., passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at Palm Beach Gardens Hospice.
Survivors include her husband, Gerald Wilson, Loxahatchee; sons and daughters-in-law, Burt and Kelly Stephens and Gregg Stephens, all of West Palm Beach, Fl., and J.J. and Nela Wilson, Sbui, Romania; daughters and son-in-law, Tanya Rietwyk, West Palm Beach, and Sabrina and Tom Shipley, Jasper; step-sons and step-daughter-in-law, Gary and Sharon Wilson, Arkansas City, Ks., Patrick Wilson, St. George, Ut., and Rayno Caretti, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.; step-daughter, Jeanie Phillips, St. George, Ut.; brother, Buddy Smith, Marietta, Ga.; sisters, Revonda Zubiena, Ball Ground, and Harriett Gable, Cedartown, Ga. Twenty-two grandchildren, one great-grandchildren and nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with Bishop Lance Johnson officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper. Pallbearers were: Chris and Brandon Buzek, Bradley Rietwyk, Chad Stephens, Jeff Buscher, Scott Zubiena and Christopher. The family did accept flowers or you may make donations to the American Cancer Society.
Gladys Parker
Mrs. Gladys Parker, age 76 of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Survivors include her son, James Reed, Hickory Flat; daughters, Louise Duncan, Jasper, and Dolly Pendley, Marble Hill; and brother, Jim Buchanan, Marble Hill. Ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bud Reed and Hardy M. Parker.
The funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. from Four Mile Baptist Church with the Revs. Barry Payne, Eric Duncan and Keith Crowe officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Randy, Buddy, Daniel and Paul Reed, Lanier Hogan and Curtis Roland. Honorary pallbearers were: Butch Gaddis, Boodie Wehunt, Randy Baker, Darrell Cash and Larry Buchanan. Baby Garland Anthony Prather, born Feb. 5, 2007, passed away Feb. 5 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
He is survived by his mother and father, Amy Totherow and Tony Prather; sisters, Krystle, Somer, Jen and Lexie Prather; brother, Kelvin Prather; grandparents, James and Kristina Prather, Jasper, Jimmy Totherow, Hill City, Trudy Totherow, Marble Hill; great-grandmother, Edith Blackwell, Marble Hill.
A graveside service was held Thursday, Feb. 8 from Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with Frank Lathery officiating. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Grace Campbell
Mrs. Grace Josephine Campbell, age 92 of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007 at Northside-Cherokee Hospital in Canton.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Grace Moss, Fayetteville, Ga., Nancy Knight, Ball Ground, Caroline and Steve Greiner, Talking Rock, and Jo and Rick Leverette, Jasper. Seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with Dr. Ben Langley officiating. Interment was in Westview Cemetery, Inc. in Atlanta.
Willie Bryan
Mrs. Willie Maude Bryan, age 81 of Tate, passed Monday evening, Jan. 30,
2006 at Brian Nursing Center in Canton, Ga.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Judy Bryan,
Jasper; brother, Ralph O’Bryant, Canton; and grandchildren, Jeff Bryan and
Jamie and Stacy Bryan.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. from Free Hope
Baptist Church with the Revs. Joe DuBois and Grant Wade officiating.
Interment followed in the church cemetery with Larry and Andy Holden, Larry
Young, Eric Ledford, Jack Owens and Steve O’Bryant serving as active
pallbearers. J.W. Ledford and Roger Rich served as honorary pallbearers. The

Bea Adams
Ms. Bea Stokes Adams, age 83 of Canton, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 7,
2006 at her residence. She attended Oakdale Baptist Church and was a
homemaker.
Survivors include her son, Billy J. Stokes, Canton; daughter, Phyllis
Stokes Pair, Canton; and sister, Ruby Elliott Waddell, Jasper. Two
grandchildren and three great-grandsons also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 from Sosebee
Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Mike Ware officiating. Interment followed in
Cherokee Memorial Park with the Rev. Mike Ware officiating.
Lou Wyatt
Mrs. Lou Causby Wyatt, age 84 of New Town Community in Calhoun, Ga.,
Passed away Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006 at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton
following several months of declining health.
Mrs. Wyatt was born on Oct. 13, 1921 in Lenoir City, Tn., daughter of the
late Samuel and Mary Crawford Brewster. She was also preceded in death by
her husbands, Manuel Causby, Vernon Kirby and the Rev. Marshall Wyatt; a
daughter, Tinnie Causby; step-son, J.D. Causby; and step-daughters, Mildred
Jackson and Faynell Adams. During her lifetime she retired from Georgia
Tufters in 1983 and was a member of New Town Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, Gilbert Causby and wife Margie, Warner, Ok.
daughters, Brenda Long and husband Clarence, Resaca, Ga., Karen Kirby and
husband Eddie, Hilda Davis and husband Johnny, all of Calhoun, and Darlene
Herndon and husband Hoyle, Jasper; step-daughters, Shirley Greeson, Calhoun,
Delma Ray and Coleen Wilson and husband James, all of Resaca, and Janie
Williams and husband Clay of Panama City, Fl.; step-sons, the Rev. Bobby
Causby and wife Shelba, Resaca, and James Wyatt of Las Vegas, Nv.; sister,
Katherine McIntosh of Knoxville, Tn.; sister-in-law, Vennie Brewster, Trion,
Ga.; and special friend and caregiver, Joyce Franklin. A host of
grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Max
Brannon & Sons Funeral Home. Grandsons served as pallbearers. Interment
followed in Fain Cemetery.
Norval Vollrath
Mr. Norval Romaine Vollrath, age 77 of Jasper, passed early Wednesday
morning, Feb. 8, 2006 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital, Jasper, after a
lengthy illness.
Mr. Vollrath was a dedicated husband and father. He was a retired emcee
for WYYZ Radio in Jasper. He retired from Delta Airlines after 29 years of
employment and he was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Francis Vollrath, Jasper; daughters,
Denise Butler, Marietta, and Cynthia Vollrath, Colorado Springs, Co.;
sister, Sarah Mann, Cleveland, Ga.; and grandchildren, Candice Williams,
Hillairy Rollins, Tiffany Vollrath, Mark Butler II and Dylan Vollrath. Many
nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held Monday, Feb. 13 from 5 until 8 p.m. from
Jasper United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Blalock officiating. The
family asks that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to a trust fund
established for Dorothy Vollrath at Jasper Banking Co., Mark Whitfield St.,

Gary Cook
Mr. Gary “Gibbo” L. Cook, age 52 of Marietta, passed away Wednesday, Feb.
8, 2006. A native of Fulton County, Mr. Cook served in the US Army. He
worked as a manager at Chevron and Shell service stations for over 20 years.
He was a member of the NGAUA Umpiring Association.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen Cook, Marietta; brothers and
sister-in-law, Tony Cook and Cookie and Diane Cook, all of Woodstock;
sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice and Walt Blalock, Dawsonville, Penny and
Troy Thacker, Nelson, and Sandra and Thomas McClain, Woodstock.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday from Carmichael Funeral
Home Chapel in Smyrna with the Rev. Willard Hamrick and Glenn Stewart

Monnie McFarland
Mrs. Monnie H. McFarland, age 87 of Ball Ground, passed away Sunday, Feb.
12, 2006 at Grandview Health Care Center. She was a homemaker and member of
Sharptop Baptist Church.
Mrs. McFarland was preceded in death by her husband, Tom McFarland; and
grandson, Trevor McFarland. Survivors include her sons, Roy McFarland, Ball
Ground, and Joe McFarland, Woodstock; step-son, Tommy McFarland, Ball
Ground; step-daughters, Sylvia Holbert, Jasper, and Joan Banks, South
Carolina; sisters, Bonnie Cantrell, Jasper, and Ruby Brock, Ball Ground.
Sixteen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive.

Fain Jones
Mr. Fain H. Jones, age 87, passed away Sunday, Feb. 12, 2006 at Roswell
Nursing Home in Roswell, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Dora Jones, Jasper; son and daughter-in-law,
Buddy and Shelia Jones, Jasper; and brothers, Thomas L. Jones of Blue Ridge
and James R. Jones of Lawrenceville. Four grandchildren, Kim and Scott
Jones, Tammy Hollifield and Tim Whitlock also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 from the
Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. The
Rev. Clyde Brock officiated with Local Chapter #47 DAV in charge of
graveside rites.
Maxine Bishop
Maxine Bishop came into the world on Feb. 7, 1936 and left it for a much
better place on Jan. 30, 2006.
She was born in Pickens County, Ga., and later moved to Cobb County. In
her lifetime she was employed as a waitress, factory worker and bookkeeper.
As a single mother, she worked tirelessly to ensure her children had the
best in life. Maxine will be greatly missed by her family, neighbors and
many friends. Although she was physically small in stature, she made a big
impression with those lucky enough to know her.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Annette Bishop
of Powder Springs, Ga., and Danny Bishop of Albany, Ga.; grandchildren,
Jacob Bishop of Athens, Ga. and Alison Bishop of Powder Springs; mother, Mae
Allred Bennett of Canton; aunts, Jewell Moore and Ada Martin of Marietta;
and friend, Austin Morris of Canton. Nieces also survive.

Bennie Hyde
Miss Bennie Mae Hyde, age 88 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, Feb. 11,
2006 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Survivors include her sister, Lola Moss, Ball Ground; and sister-in-law,
Claudine Hyde, Jasper. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle
Funeral Home with the Revs. Carl Owenby and William Darnell officiating.

Blanche Jordan Sewell, age 92 of Ball Ground, passed away Thursday, Feb.
16, 2006 at Northside Hospital Cherokee.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Home Chapel in Canton. Interment was in Georgia Memorial Park in
Marietta.
Ryan Caviness
Mr. Ryan Caviness, age 22 of Jasper, formerly of Canton, passed away on
Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2006 as a result of an automobile accident.
Survivors include his mother, Deborah Hall of Jasper; and brother, Matt
Caviness of Ellijay. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 from the Sosebee
Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Ray officiating. Interment followed in
the Cherokee Memorial Park.
Ralph Payne
Mr. Ralph “Red” Payne, age 71 of Jasper, passed away Feb. 14, 2006 in
Cobb County.
Survivors include his sons, Steve Payne, Jasper, and Rick Payne,
Marietta, Ga.; daughters, Charlotte Immel, Greensboro, N.C., and Melissa
Payne Henderson, Woodstock, Ga.; and grandchildren, Shannon Newton, Scottie
and Taran Payne, Christian and Aaron Immel and Drew Henderson. Six
great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Logan officiating. Interment followed in

Hilda Sauer
Mrs. Hilda Sauer, age 68 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Monday, Feb. 20,
2006 at her residence.
Mrs. Sauer is survived by her husband, Gerhardt Sauer, of the home.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 22 from 6-8 p.m. at Roper Funeral
Home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 from the
Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with interment in Lake Forest Memorial Park on
Camp Road.
