Tamara Argo Jackson
Tamara Argo Jackson, 48, died March 15, 2007 of pancreatic cancer at her Woodstock residence. She was the daughter of Shirley Jodi Argo of Jasper.
Mrs. Jackson had developed a strong reputation after 12 years teaching kindergarten in Acworth. Colleagues sing her praises.
"Tamara was the best kindergarten teacher I've ever known," said fellow teacher Anne McCord of Kennesaw. "She knew how a 5-year-old thinks and played to that. She taught the children a lot while they thought they were just having fun. She could find the best in those kids and loved them all. It didn't matter if they were lovable or not."
"Even the teachers there wanted their kids in her class," said her husband, Mike Jackson of Woodstock. "The first-grade teachers at Baker loved getting Tamara's students because they were so well taught."
The memorial service was held at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Marietta. Carmichael Funeral Home, Smyrna, was in charge of arrangements.
The Atlanta native grew up in Smyrna and attended Campbell High School. After earning a Bachelor's degree in Education from Georgia State University, she embarked on a 27-year career in the Cobb County school system. She taught several grades, including first and fifth, before discovering that kindergarten was her calling, her husband said.
Her dedication was such that she recently returned to college, earning a Master's degree in early childhood education at Kennesaw State University in 2006. In May she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had to go on disability the next month, he said.
"Not being able to teach upset her much more than being
diagnosed with cancer," her husband said. "Her goal was to get
through the cancer and get back to teaching."
Mrs. Jackson had loved palm trees ever since she discovered that her name Tamara means palm tree, her husband said. She filled her house and classroom with palm trees and angel decorations. Images of both frequently appeared in her shirt wardrobe.
Away from her classroom she went camping, traveled and looked forward to reading on the beach. She sang alto in the St. Paul United Methodist Church choir. She was on the church's hiring committee and had been a representative to the annual North Georgia conference.
In the classroom, Mrs. Jackson was animated and active, said her husband, who visited her class several times a year.
"She enjoyed doing dances and songs with the children. Every year she would dress up as the Cat in the Hat and then teach the class about Dr. Seuss," he said.
Her 5-year-olds particularly enjoyed word exercises, such as
Mrs. Jackson's dictionary game that required them to look up words and form a sentence, putting the words into context.
"Another thing she did was take a video of the kids while they chewed bubble gum and tried to blow bubbles. It was the funniest thing. She'd send copies home to the parents."
She made learning fun and fun fun, too.
Survivors include a daughter, Stephanie Friedel of Marietta; a son, Matt Friedel of Athens; a step-daughter, Leslie Query of Richmond; two step-sons, Mike Jackson of Yuma, Az. and Brian
Jackson of Richmond; her mother, Shirley Jodi Argo of Jasper; her maternal grandmother, Ruby McCook of Smyrna; a sister, Karen Allen of Norcross; a brother, Paul Argo Jr. of Alexandria, Al.; and four grandsons.
