Daniel Hitt
Mr. Daniel Gene Hitt, age 75 of Jasper, passed away Monday, March 13,
2006 at his residence.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Faye Hitt, Jasper; two nephews, Danny
and Tim Hitt, both of Jasper; great-niece and nephew, Jessica Flowers and
Matthew Hitt; great-great-niece, Noee Flowers.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 16 from the
Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Childers officiating.
Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper. The following
served as pallbearers: Danny Hitt, Ronnie Pendley, Carlan Miller, Homer
Hightower and Frank Shelton.
Deyo Brooks
Mr. Deyo Brooks, age 80, passed away April 4, 2001 at Northside-Cherokee Hospital in Canton.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Brooks. Ball Ground; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Patsy Brooks, White, Ga., and Jack and Sheila Brooks, Jasper; daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Kennie Childers, Ball Ground; brother and sister-in-law, Grover and Bennie Brooks, Jasper; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Billy Wigington, Marble Hill; and four grandchildren, Felicia and Tyler Childers, Elizabeth Brooks Knight and Elise Brooks.
The funeral service was held Monday, April 7 at 1 p.m. from Corinth Baptist Church with the Revs. Huey Holloway, Roy Blackwell and LeRoy Kelly officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Kevin McTaggart, Don Page, Randall, Ronnie, Bobby and Eddie Brooks, Donnie Fowler and Toddy Hendrix. Honorary pallbearers were: Greg Edwards, Larry Holden, Mike Hendrix, Gary Evans and Mark Duncan. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Corinth Baptist Church Building Fund. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Susan Gouge
Mrs. Susan Gouge, age 53 of Jasper, passed away March 22, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
She is survived by her son, Michael Gouge, Valdosta; daughters, Annie Hain, Jasper, and Jessica Buckley, Tacoma, Wa.; brother, Michael Scherba, Oregon; sister, Peggy Mergot Peralta, Oregon.
A memorial service was held on Thursday at Tate United Methodist Church with the Rev. Parker Benson officiating. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Carol Hampton
Mrs. Carol Hampton, age 43 of Marietta, passed away at Crawford Long Hospital.
She is survived by her father, Julian Hampton, Michigan; son, Rodrick Hampton, Smyrna; daughters, Courtney Hampton, Smyrna; Katrina and Terrell Hampton, Michigan; brother, Eddie Henderson, Michigan; sisters, Ylonda McKenzie, Smyrna, and Tracy Henderson, Michigan. Four grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday from Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Roach officiating. Interment followed in Cool Springs Cemetery. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Jo Brown
Mrs. Mary Jo Brown, age 71 of Nelson, passed away April 4, 2003 at her home.
She is survived by her husband, Wayne Brown; daughters and son-in-law, Yodie Fletcher, Warner Robins, and Kay and Rick Bruce, Tate; sister, Carol Sue Pendley, Tate. Four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Edwin Weaver officiating. Interment followed in Lake Forest Memorial Park with the following serving as pallbearers: Eddie Fountain, Danny Peterman, Andy Thompson, Mark Pendley, Jeff Stancil and Tom Arrendale. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Ruby Jordan
Mrs. Ruby Cavender Jordan passed away March 31, 2003 at the Woodstock Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Hubert Jordan; son, Robert “Bob” Jordan; daughters, Barbara Jarrett and Sylvia Roland.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Clifton and Joyce Jordan, Stanley and Rhonda Jordan and Allie Jordan, all of Ball Ground; daughter and sons-in-law, Doris and Hubert Mooney, Ellijay, and Bill Jarrett, Ball Ground; brother, Harry Cavender, Ball Ground; sisters, Estelle Jordan, Ball Ground, Eva Mae Noles, South Carolina, and Walterine Roper, Marble Hill. Twenty-three grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 3 from Fairview Baptist Church with the Revs. Horris Biddy, Wallace Sutton and Troy Davis officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery with the grandsons serving as pallbearers. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Charles Duncan
Mr. Charles Duncan, age 61 of Talking Rock, passed away April 2, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Drucilla Duncan; son, David Charles Duncan, Holly Springs; daughters, Dana Thompson, Dallas, Stacy Taylor and Susie Gunnin, both of Canton, Linda JoAnn Hancock, White, Cindy Diane Mulkey, Ellijay, and Tracy Kincaid, Nicholsville. Eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service will be announced later. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Maurice Fain
Maurice H. Fain, age 52 of Sebring, passed away March 27, 2003 in Sebring, Fl. Born in Atlanta, he moved to Sebring from Marathon in 2002. He was a member of Garden Lakes Baptist Church in Rome. He was a veteran of the US Army and a composer and musician.
Survivors include his wife, Dawn Snow; son, Jason of Brooklyn, N.Y.; daughter, Lisa Piazza of Brooklyn, N.Y.; father, Hoyt of Jasper; sisters, Marcia Aycock of Rome and Sonia Locklear of Smyrna.
A memorial service was at 1 p.m. Monday at Lake Istokpoga Park. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Lupus Foundation of America, PO Box 79563, Baltimore, Md. 21979-0563. Morris Funeral Chapel of Sebring handled the arrangements.
Bryan Childers
Mr. Bryan Childers, age 34 of Jasper, passed away April 3, 2003 at Portsbridge Hospice in Atlanta.
Survivors include his father and mother, Max and Jean Childers, Jasper; brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark and Brandy Childers, Chris and Dawn Childers, Corey and Shannon Childers and Chad Childers, all of Jasper; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lisa and Jimmy Heaton, Talking Rock, Gaylene and Jimmy Gleason and Kaylene Marlow, all of Jasper. Fifteen nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, April 4 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Herman Mulkey officiating.
Sara Buck
Ms. Sara Buck, age 69 of Ranger, Ga., passed away at Kindred Hospital in
Atlanta, Ga. on Monday, April 3, 2005. The body was cremated.
Survivors include her son, Tom Shaw; and daughter, Jayna Buchholz. Five
grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service was held at noon on Friday, April 7 from the Chapel of
Roper Funeral Home.
McKinley Brown
Mr. McKinley (Fuzz) Brown, age 56 of Ellijay, Ga., passed away at his
residence.
Survivors include his son, Travis McKinley Brown; daughter and
son-in-law, Penny and Tim Thomas; brother, Nell Brown; sister, Joan Kirby;
grandchildren, Kayla and Nicholas Thomas and Byron Brown Prather;
step-grandchildren, Sabrina Thomas and Mathew Keylon. Several nieces,
nephews and cousins also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, April 6 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel
of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoyle Evans officiating. In lieu of

Mary Kilgore
Mrs. Mary Jane Kilgore, age 72 of Ball Ground, Ga., passed away
Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper.
Survivors include her husband, Jack A. Kilgore; son, Casey Kilgore;
daughters, Deborah Chastain, Karen Smith and Susan Shealey; brother, Herman
Biddy; and sister, Laura Silvers. Eleven grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, April 8 at 2 p.m. from Fair View
Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Weaver officiating. Interment followed in
the church cemetery. Roper Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Betty Chastain
Mrs. Betty Jo Chastain, age 57 of Ball Ground, passed away on Wednesday,
April 5, 2006 at her residence. She was employed at Costco.
Survivors include her husband, Johnny Chastain, Ball Ground; daughter and
son-in-law, Johnna and Buggy Phelps, Ball Ground; mother, Frances Stafford,
Jasper; brothers, Tim Stafford, Jasper, and Jeff Stafford, Adairsville;
sister, Sandra Childers, Fairmount. Three grandchildren, several nieces and
nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 9 from Sosebee
Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jerrold Young officiating. Interment followed
in Ball Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Bailea Ray
Bailea Leeann Ray, 7-week old- infant daughter of Rebecca Leggett Ray and
Jeff Ray of Mayo, Fl., passed away on March 20, 2006.
Also surviving is her brother, Thomas Ray of Mayo; maternal grandparents,
Ronald and Barbara Leggett of Perry, Fl.; maternal great-grandmothers, Pearl
Dupree of Jasper, Ga. and Sylvia Leggett of Perry; paternal grandmother,
Maxcine Ray of Branford, Fl.; a special uncle and aunt, David and Misty
Leggett, and their sons, Little David and Ethan. Several great and
great-great aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
Services were held at the Word of Truth Tabernacle with burial in Shiloh
Cemetery in Perry with the Rev. Johnny Johns officiating. Pallbearers were:
Bill, Luke and Chris Weaver. Joe P. Burns funeral home in charge of
arrangements.
Maybell Painter
Maybell Painter, age 65 of Jasper, passed away Monday, April 3, 2006 at
her residence following an extended illness.
Born in Lumpkin County, she lived most of her life in Dawson County
before moving to Pickens three years ago. Mrs. Painter was a homemaker and a
member of Pleasant Union Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, J.C. Painter; parents, Francis and Ester Rider; sisters, Evelyn
Rider and Lucille Davis; brothers, Clarence and Frank Rider and Lon Proctor;
and a great-granddaughter.
Survivors include her children, Larry Painter, Judy Painter and Wayne
Prichard, all of Dawsonville, Deborah Painter and Michael Gober, Jasper;
sisters, Irene Dale and Reba Rider, both of Dahlonega; and brothers, Clayton
and Guy Rider, both of Dahlonega. Four grandchildren and one
great-grandchild also survives.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 5 at 2 p.m. from
Bearden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steve Chadwick officiating.
Interment will be in Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Bessie Boling
Mrs. Bessie Boling, age 74 of Jasper, passed away Thursday morning, April
6, 2006 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital, Jasper.
Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Lindsey Petty, Jo Ann Medlin,
James Bruce, Danny Whitfield, Larry Ray, Betty Eaton, Jerry Walker, Beck
Bannister, Luther Walker, Jr., Linda Brannon, Debra Byers, Cathy Stone,
Lamar Walker, Randy Walker and Gary Walker and Theresa Johnston.
The funeral service was held Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel
of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Junior Waddell and John Padgett
officiating. Interment followed in Fair View Baptist Church Cemetery, Ball
Ground. Pallbearers were: Randy, Lamar, Gary and Pete Walker, Jonathan and
Brett Ray.
Velvie Sparks
Mrs. Velvie C. Sparks, age 85 of Ball Ground, passed away on Sunday,
April 9, 2006 at the Brian Center Nursing Home. She was a member of Ophir
Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, Hugh Sparks of Canton and Thomas Wayne Sparks
of Ball Ground. Eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two
great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 from Ophir
Baptist Church with the Revs. John Holaway, Clyde Boling and Troy Milford
officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Sosebee Funeral Home
in charge of arrangements.
William Cartwright
Mr. William E. “Bill” Cartwright, age 85 of Jasper, passed away Saturday,
April 8, 2006 at Grandview Health Care Center.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Carroll Nix, Ball
Ground; son-in-law, Gary Dean, Jonesboro; grandchildren, Angie and Joey
Jones, Jasper, Tammy and Stewart Ellington, Knoxville, Tn., Josh Nix, Ball
Ground, and Mark Dean, Peachtree City. Four great-grandchildren also
survive. Mr. Cartwright was preceded in death by his wife, Claudean
Cartwright; a daughter, Brenda Dean; and a grandson, Matthew Dean.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, April 11 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel
of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Johnson and James Blalock
officiating. Interment was in Jasper Cemetery with local Chapter 47 DAV in
charge of the military graveside service. Pallbearers were: Josh Nix, Mark
Dean, Nicholas and Joey Jones, Stewart Ellington, Arthur Atkins and Al
Fowler.
Marvin Padgett
Mr. Marvin Glenn Padgett, age 51 of Mineral Buff, Ga., passed away at his
residence.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, Jerome, Brian and Lisa,
Thomas and Julie and Dylan Glenn Padgett; daughter and son-in-law, Destiny
and Shawn McBee; brothers, J.T., Terry and Ronnie Padgett; sisters, Carolyn
Taylor, Ellen Smith, Erma Morris and Sharon Daily; step-children, Anthony
Taylor, Shannon Childers and Josh Padgett. Five grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2006 from the
Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with interment in Four Mile Baptist Church
Cemetery with the Rev. J.T. Padgett officiating.
Dorothy Griffith
Mrs. Dorothy (Jackie) Duncan Griffith of Marietta passed away Wednesday,
March 29, 2006 at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
Mrs. Griffith was native of Marble Hill, Ga. and the daughter of the late
George and Mattie Duncan. She graduated from Tate High School.
Jackie was an avid gardener. Her love of flowers characterized her
creative abilities to the utmost. Her favorite flowers of which she grew
over 200 varieties were day lilies. She also loved to paint, write poetry
and had a keen interest in antiques.
Mrs. Griffith is survived by her husband of 55 years, Jack R. Griffith;
son, Stephen Kelly Griffith of Marietta; daughter and son-in-law, Amy and
Mark Denicore of Waterford, Va.; three grandchildren, Sophie, Daisy and
Tucker Denicore; sister-in-law, Jane Griffeth of Tate, and Vivian Elkins of
Duluth. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1 from the Chapel
of Roper Funeral Home with Dr. Eddie Martin officiating. Interment followed
in Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Donations may be made to Must
