Mr. Mims Herrington of Riverdale, Ga.,
died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004. Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at the chapel of Parrott Funeral Home, with the Rev. Mickey Stallings officiating. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. Herrington was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Wills.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in law, Angie and Mickey Stallings of Augusta, Sharon and Dean Sanders of Gay and Mary Ellen and Jerry Studle of Forsyth; a sister, Henrietta Hayes of New Ellington, S.C.; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and nephews, Bobby Wills of Las Vegas, Nev. and Frank Wills of Augusta.
Mr. Ray Mahaffey entered into rest
Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, in the Barrow Community Hospital, Winder, Ga.
Mr. Mahaffey was cremated. There will be no services. Mr. Mahaffey was born in Canton, Ohio. He was a retired dispatcher with the Burke County Sheriff’s Department, a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesboro, an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and a member of the American Legion Post #120 in Waynesboro.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Betty Queen Mahaffey; a son, Ray Mahaffey Jr. of Winder; three grandchildren, Dawn M. Atkinson, Devin M. Mahaffey and Dean M. Lovett, all of Waynesboro; and two great-grandchildren, Cody Scott Atkinson and Baylie Lovett, both of Waynesboro. Poteet Funeral Home South Chapel, 3465 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta, was in charge of the arrangments.
Miss Stephanie (Step) Carpenter entered into rest
Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 29, at Fellowship Baptist Church in Waynesboro, with the Rev. James E. Thomas officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Stephanie leaves to cherish her memories, a son, Brandon G. Lewis; her mother, Ruby Carpenter; her father, Alvin Carpenter; a sister, Dotsie D. Burke; and four brothers, Ronnie Berrian, Wayne Carpenter Sr., Alvin D. Carpenter and Dennis L. Carpenter.
The Rev. James Harold Rowland Sr., 72,
of 116 Lake Bluff Drive, Waynesboro died Friday, March 5, 2004, at Burke Medical Center. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at First Baptist Church in Waynesboro with Dr. J. Truett Gannon and the Rev. Father Gary Abbott presiding. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home in Waynesboro.
Rev. Rowland was a native of Cordele and a resident of Waynesboro for 36 years. He was educated at Mercer University in Macon and graduated from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. He was pastor of First Baptist Church in Waynesboro, First Baptist Church in Washington, Lake Toxaway in North Carolina and First Baptist Mission Church in Marietta. He was also instrumental in establishing Rosemont Heights Baptist Church in Waynesboro and served in various positions of the Georgia Baptist Convention.
Rev. Rowland was mayor of the City of Waynesboro from 1992 to 1995 and served as president of the Burke County Chamber of Commerce. He was president of the Waynes-boro Rotary Club in 1963 and Washington Rotary Club and received the distinguished honor of Paul Harris Fellow. He was a charter member of the International Fellowship of Flying Rotarians and a former weekly columnist of the Washington News-Reporter and a weekly columnist for The True Citizen in Waynesboro until his death. He was an avid golfer and hunter.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan Thompson Rowland; three children, James Harold Rowland Jr. of Grovetown, Cheryl R. Hen-derson of Beech Island, S.C., and Ernest E. Rowland of Augusta; five grandchildren and a great grandson; and a sister, Mrs. Faye Gregory of Stem, N.C.
Pallbearers will be William Harold Rowland, Ernest Hampton Rowland, John Creighton Henderson Jr., John Henderson Sr., Brian Rowland Henderson and James Jeffrey Goff.
The family requested memorial contributions be made to Portsbridge Hospice, 1227 Augusta West Pkwy., Augusta, Ga. 30909. DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Irene Ellison-Jordan departed this life on Saturday, March 6, 2004,
at the home of her sister, Mary Ann Hilton. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 13, at Beech Branch Baptist Church in Sardis, with the Rev. Roosevelt Anthony officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include her son, Albert M. (Wanda J.) Jordan of Willingboro, N.J.; one sister, Mary Ann Hilton of Waynes-boro; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mr. George McCloud, 75,
of Cincinnati, Ohio, entered into rest on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at his home.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, March 20, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 841 Jones Ave., Waynesboro, with Pastor Richard Holland officiating.
Burial will be in Pines Cemetery. Mr. McCloud, a native of Burke County, was the son of the late George and Sophronia McCloud. Friends may call at the home of Willie McCloud, 103 Lovers Lane, the home of Viola Quaye, 128 Lovers Lane, or Phinazee and Son Funeral Home on Friday, March 19, from 6-8 p.m.
Mrs. Vivian Loren Ledbetter entered into rest Friday, March 12, 2004.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, in the Chapel of DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home, with Chaplain Wayne Bruner and the Rev. Tobin Burnett officiating. Interment followed at Hopeful Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Ledbetter was a native of Blythe and lived in the Augusta most of her life. She was a member of the Hopeful Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, Mr. Lester Beeland of Martinez; her daughter, Lisa King of Martinez; two brothers, Harvey Loren and Raymond Loren, both of Waynesboro; sister-in-law, Jane Loren of Augusta; and four grandchildren, Zackary Beeland, Melissa King, Michelle King and Chelsea Lane. Pallbearers were Tammy Tucker, Jean Delida, Julie Loren, Zackary Beeland, David Tucker and Cindy Tucker.
In honor of Mrs. Ledbetter, her grandchildren served as honorary pallbearers.
Ms. Catherine Marie Miles, age 66,
of Douglasville, Ga., passed away Friday, March 12, 2004.
Funeral services were held 4 p.m. Sunday, March 14, from Martin and Hightower Heritage Chapel, with Denver Chandler officiating. Interment followed at Carroll Memory Gardens.
Ms. Miles was born March 22, 1937 in Carroll County to the late James Taylor “J.T.” Miles Jr. and Nellie Carter Miles. She was retired from Parmalat New Atlanta Dairies having served as Director of Human Resources. She was Baptist by faith. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Janice Willis. Survivors include three sisters, Tommie Duncan of Douglasville, Martha and Fred Chambers of Waynesboro, and Frances and Bill Fowler of Carrollton; five nieces; five nephews; and 25 great-nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Carlton Chambers, Tommy Chambers, Doyle Fowler, Bill Fowler, Chris Willis, Kent Perry and Jacob Hullsey. Martin and Hightower Funeral Home, Carrollton, was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Lois S. Stembridge of Tryon, N.C.,
Passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2004.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, March 19, at First Baptist Church in Forest City, N.C., with Dr. Barry K. Keys and the Rev. J. Anthony Spencer officiating. Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 20, in Magnolia Cemetery, Waynesboro.
Born Lois Virginia Sawyer to Shep and Nell Sawyer of Johnston, S.C., on Jan. 17, 1912, she completed her music education degree at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C. She had a wonderful marriage to the Rev. Henry Hansel Stembridge Jr. of Waynesboro. They served together at First Baptist churches in Barnwell, S.C., Cedartown, Ga., Paris, Tenn., Paducah, Ken., Forest City, Lynchburg, Va., and Antioch and Brisbane in the San Francisco Bay area of California. While there she received her MA degree in Special Education from San Francisco State University. They retired to Columbia, S.C., where she continued to teach and to establish herself as an inspirational speaker. Dr. Stembridge died in 1979. Mrs. Stembridge was a member of First Baptist Church of Forest City where she was well known for her Men’s Bible Class in the 1950s She truly lived her life in gratitude and praise to God. We will miss her deeply. Their children, Jane S. Stembridge and Henry Hansel Stembridge III reside in North Carolina and Florida. Mrs. Stembridge is also survived by her brother-in-law, Dr. A.H. Spitz; and three sisters-in-law, Katherine Bland Sawyer, Frances Drayton Stembridge and Rena Bonini Stembridge.

Mr. Hubert H. Lambert, 72, entered into rest Saturday,
March 20, 2004, at Burke Medical Center in Waynesboro.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Monday, March 22, at Rosemont Heights Baptist Church, with the Revs. Wayne Dixon and Keith Alderman officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens. Mr. Lambert was the husband of Mary Phyliss Lambert and had resided in Burke County most of his life. He was a retired automobile mechanic and a member of Rosemont Heights Baptist Church.
Family members include two sons, Hubert F. Lambert Jr. of Stapleton and Don Monroe Lambert of Waynesboro; three daughters, Charlotte Ann Moon, Mary Frances Callison and Nona Elaine Weddon, all of Waynesboro; two sisters, Mildred Brown and Minnie Lane, both of Millen; two brothers, Grady Lambert of Millen and Elmer Lambert of Waynesboro; and 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
