while working a structure fire in DeKalb County May 4.
He leaves behind his wife Shainti and 4-year-old son Colby. He was an
assistant Fire Chief for the Bethany Salem Fire Department, a firefighter
for DeKalb and Forsyth Counties and an instructor for the Georgia Fire
Academy among other positions promoting safety in the fire service.

Today is a day of sadness and reflection in the fire service community in
the Atlanta area and beyond. As we lost a “mighty lion” in the field of the
fire service Bill Craddock. Bill was more than just a firefighter; he had a
passion for the job, and wanted to not only excel his skills, but those of
others. He believes that anyone, no matter of ability or challenges, could
be an integral part of the fire service and fire suppression. Whether it be
carrying tools, overhauling a building after a fire or saving souls from a
traumatic automobile accident.
Bill came into the fire service after serving a stint in the Marine Corps
and riding bulls in a rodeo. He became a member of the DeKalb County Fire
Department after spending time with Cherokee County Station 3 in Hickory
Flat as a volunteer. Bill became a well respected firefighter and trainer.
No matter how challenging the task, Bill could make it simple with a huge
amount of patience for his
students.
Bill, eventually became part of DeKalb County Fire Department’s Technical
rescue team based out of Firehouse 24, providing specialized and difficult
services to other fire stations in the county and would be a “first
responder” if other parts of the country needed DeKalb’s
assistance/expertise.
Bill became nationally known for his training, discipline and passion for
the fire service. He had colleagues and friends from New York to California
that shared his passion for the service via a firefighter brotherhood
organization called FOOLS in which he was an active member and officer. When
news of his heart attack started to spread in the fire service community,
there were people all over the country lending their support and prayers for
Bill and his family Kids who attended an elementary school in Mississippi
that Bill helped to repair after Hurricane Katrina sent get well cards to
his wife Shainti. The first night Bill was in the hospital, nearly
100 firefighters on and off duty flocked to the hospital to show their
concern, and yes their love for this man. When there were times when the
doctors weren’t sure he would make it through the night, there would be up
to 12 firefighters and family members holding vigil in the waiting room
pulling for Bill.
While Bill could be rough and abrupt on the outside, he always had an
abiding love and concern for his family and fellow firefighters. Whether it
is taking Colby to the movies, horseback riding with Shainti, or supporting
a firefighter injured on the job via a fundraising event, or to promote
safety and brotherhood, he had that unrequited love for humanity.
He had a strong passion for the Bethany-Salem Fire Department working to
obtain funds, equipment and training for its members. Working tirelessly to
make a positive impact and to press upon the importance to serve the
community with professionalism and respect.
His strong will, tenacity and ability to deal with significant obstacles
in his life only made his life that more amazing. Battling cancer and other
ailments to not only be in the fire service, but making a significant impact
in fighting for others.
Bill was only 37 years old when he passed on. A bit young, one might say,
but he lived a full life and along that way impacted far more people than
anyone would ever know. While I only knew him for a brief time, his
knowledge, his passion and pure grit will always be something that I will
hold in my soul. I will never forget Bill Craddock.
