Janie Evans
Mrs. Janie "Irene" Evans, age 86 of Jasper, formerly of Marietta, passed away Saturday, July 1, 2006.
Born in Marietta, Mrs. Evans was employed as a seamstress and had been a member and pianist of Talking Rock First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Haynes Grant Evans, Jr. of Armuchee and Harris Earl Evans of Jasper; daughter, Janice E. Whitmire of Jasper; brother, Charles "Jack" Queen of Woodstock; sister, Betty Eubanks of Marietta. Five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 2 from Cheatham Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta with the Rev. Tom Lee officiating. Carmichael Funeral Home of Marietta in charge of arrangements.

Gladys Thomas
Gladys C. Thomas, age 78 of Jasper, formerly of Flowery Branch, passed away Sunday, July 2, 2006 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mrs. Thomas was a lifelong resident of Hall County where she retired from Georgia Boot Manufacturing Co. and had been living in Jasper the last four years. She was a member of Flat Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Thomas loved and saw only the beauty and good in everyone and everything in life. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gordon "Shorty" Thomas; and her parents, Jack and Lavada Jones.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Dan Chambers of Jasper; grandson and wife, Greg and Stacey Chambers of Blue Ridge; great-granddaughters, Carson and Campbell Chambers of Blue Ridge; sisters, Louise Thomas of Jasper and Geraldine Nichols of Buford. Many beloved nieces and nephews also survive. The family wishes to extend their love and appreciation to two very special people of Mended Hearts, Inc., Virginia and Ernest Bragg of Flowery Branch.
The funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 5 from the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Wade officiating. Interment followed in Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations may be made to Flat Creek Baptist Church.

Jessie Ward
Mrs. Jessie Ward, age 70 of Ball Ground, Ga., passed Friday morning, July 7, 2006 at Cartersville Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Wallace R. Ward, Sr. of Ball Ground; daughters, Carol Callahan, Vickie Akins and Charlotte Hutchins, all of Dallas, Ga., Angel and Tony Gibson of Ball Ground; brother, Frank Greene, Dallas, Ga.; sisters, Grace Sallette, Dallas, Ga., and Bernice Bowling of Jasper. Nine grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service was held Sunday, July 9 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles O. Walker and Paul Ward officiating. The family did accept house-type floral arrangements or memorials may be made to assist with funeral expenses.

Ruby Stokes
Mrs. Ruby Stokes, age 83 of Jasper, passed at her residence Monday morning, July 3, 2006.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Odies and Dot Stokes, Larry Stokes and David and Rita Stokes, all of Jasper, Glenn and Robin Stokes, Flynt, Mi.; daughter and son-in-law, Estelle and Daniel Fitts, Jasper; sister-in-law, Iola Ponders, Ellijay. Seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, July 5 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Troy Davis and Marvin Young officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery (Gilmer) with Kenny and Steve Stokes, Tracy Ray, Truman Davis, Gordon and Jerry Lowe serving as pallbearers.

Beulah Skinner
Mrs. Beulah L. Skinner, age 93 of Jasper, formerly of the Oil City area of Pennsylvania, passed away at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital June 28, 2006.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Jackie Skinner, Colorado Springs, Co.; daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Walter Sobota, Jasper; brother, George Rodgers, Oil City, Pa.; sister, Genevive Boyer, Mid West. Six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Sweeten
Mr. Thomas E. Sweeten, age 58 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed Sunday evening, July 2, 2006 at his residence.
Mr. Sweeten and his family moved to this area from West Frankfort, Il. in 2001. Tom enlisted in the US Navy on July 14, 1964 and was honorably discharged on Oct. 25, 1968 having served in Vietnam and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Sweeten; step-father, John Thompson; daughter, Kesha Rapp; and brothers, Danny and Rob Thompson.
Survivors include his mother, Gladys Thompson, Talking Rock; son-in-law, Martin Rapp; brother, David Thompson; nephew, Bryan Thompson; and grandchildren, Tyler, Joseph and Kyle Rapp. Aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, July 5 at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, Il. Military graveside services followed in Logan Baptist Cemetery. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Clara Turner
Mrs. Clara Turner, age 85 of Tate, passed late Sunday afternoon, July 2, 2006 at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta.
Survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Tommy Turner, Kennesaw, and Joe and Carol Turner, Newnan; sisters, Lorene Boling, Buford, and Pearl Mullinax, Vinnings; grandchildren, Brad Turner, Nashville, Tn., Major Todd Turner, Seattle, Wa., Bryan Turner, San Francisco, Ca., Tara Caton, Colorado Springs, Co., and Terri Lynn Kinzel, Buford.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, July 5 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles O. Walker officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with Jim Philyaw, Max and Evan McBrayer, Jerry and Gene Higgins and Todd Turner serving as active pallbearers. Coleman Higgins served as honorary pallbearer.

Imogene Ridings
Mrs. Imogene Ella Trammell Ridings, age 51 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed on Friday, June 30, 2006 at her residence.
Mrs. Ridings was born on March 12, 1955 in Jasper to the late Houston Paul and Pauline Blackwell Trammell.
Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Paula and Billy Jarrett and Robin Ridings Burdick, all of Talking Rock; son, Jeffery Ridings; seven grandchildren; sisters, Susie Smith of Dahlonega, Helen Dunn and Janice Burns, both of Cumming, Paulette Bennett of Marble Hill and Katherine Holt, Jasper; brothers, Paul "Buck" Trammell, Ball Ground, Thomas Trammell, Jasper, and Tim Trammell, Loganville, Ga.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 3 from Yellow Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Frankie Wilson, Steve Chadwick and Bobby Trammell. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ricky Southerland, T.J. Trammell, Jonathan and Scott Mull, Jonathan Martin, Sammy Lewis, Casey Pittman and Eric Caldwell. Donations may be made to the Imogene Ridings Memorial Fund, PO Box 485, Ellijay, Ga. 30540.

James Talmadge
Mr. James Chappell Talmadge, age 81 of Ball Ground, passed away Tuesday,
July 5, 2005.
Mr. Talmadge was born on Sept. 15, 1923 in Monticello, Ga. He retired in
1983 from Ford Motor Co. as a truck sales engineer. He was a member of Ball
Ground United Methodist Church and enjoyed wood-carving and camping. He
served on the Georgia Motor Trucking Association and Unicoi Springs Camp
Resort, where he enjoyed camping for over 20 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Talmadge; sons and daughters-in-law,
James H. and Toni Talmadge of Kennesaw and William C. and Lynda Talmadge of
Atlanta; granddaughter, Bethany Talmadge of Kennesaw; grandsons, Tracey
Talmadge of Atlanta and Evan Talmadge of Kennesaw; great-granddaughters,
Ella Grace and Alexa Jade, both of Atlanta. Several cousins also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7 from the Sosebee
Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Ash McEuen officiating. A graveside service
was held at 3 p.m. from Green Meadows Memorial Gardens in Conyers. In lieu
of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ball Ground United Methodist
Church Building Fund, PO Box 376, Ball Ground, Ga. 30107.

Rev. Bill Biddy
The Rev. Bill Biddy, age 89 of Canton, passed away Monday, July 4, 2005
at his residence. He was a member of Riverdale Baptist Church and retired
from the Spinning Room at the Canton Textile Mill.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Toy Hitt of
Canton; brother, Herman Biddy of Ball Ground; sisters, Jane Kilgore of Ball
Ground and Laura Silvers of Talking Rock; grandson, Terry Eugene Ghorley of
Canton; son-in-law, O’Neal Ghorley of Canton. Several nieces and nephews
also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 7 from the
Riverdale Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Weaver, Eric Mayo, Buddy Roper
and Joey DuBois officiating. Interment was in Southview Cemetery. Sosebee
Funeral Home of Canton was in charge of the arrangements.

William Steed
Mr. William (Bill) Steed, age 51 of Jasper, passed away Friday evening,
July 1, 2005 at North Fulton Regional Hospital, Roswell.
Survivors include his father, Bernard Steed, Jasper; brother and
sister-in-law, Joseph and Rita Steed, Greenville, De.; niece and her
husband, Jennifer and Michael Hunter, Atlanta. Numerous aunts, uncles and
cousins also survive.
A funeral Mass was held Tuesday, July 5 at 11 a.m. from Our Lady of the
Mountains Catholic Church with Father Frank Richardson officiating.
Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were:
Thomas, Patrick, James and Leonard Steed, Angelo Fabrizi and Tony Goode. The
family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Lady
of the Mountains Catholic Church, Jasper, Ga. Cagle Funeral Home in charge
of arrangements.

Marvin Carden, Sr.
In memory of Marvin Wesley Carden, Sr. -- Feb. 28, 1928 - July 3, 2005.
There will be a memorial service held at 43 Will Poole Ave. in Jasper,
located behind Roland Tire, first house on left. A dinner will follow the
memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family will be accepting donations
to help with Marvin’s medical expenses.
Marvin is survived by two daughters and one son, Linda and Lyle
Cunningham, Tuseumbia, Mo., Mary and David Gerlt, Sumter, S.C., and Wes and
Debbie Carden, Jasper, Ga. Ten grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and
one brother, Andy Carden, and his spouse Opal also survive. They live in
California.
The service will be Saturday, July 16 from 1-6 p.m. Friends and relatives
are invited to attend. Please bring a covered dish.

John Patterson
Mr. John Samuel Patterson, age 76 of Jasper, passed away July 3, 2004 at Northside Hospital Cherokee.
Survivors include his wife, Clara Patterson of Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Barbara Patterson of Chickamauga and Shawn and Vanessa Patterson of Jasper; daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia and Tim Pearson of Jasper. Two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 5 from Free Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Joey DuBois, Autry Dean and Earl Wilkie officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Junior Ingram, Andy, Kenny and Larry Holden, Dean Price and Mike Norton. Honorary pallbearers were: Earl Phoenix, Buster Ingram, Steve Hitt, David Carver and Eddie Davis. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Ella Townsend
Mrs. Ella M. Townsend, age 71 of Fairmount, departed this life Saturday, July 10, 2004 at her home.
Mrs. Townsend was born May 6, 1933 in Murray County, Ga., the daughter of the late Willard “Will” and Omie Mulkey. She was a member of the Salacoa Baptist Church in Cherokee County, having joined the church August 11, 1954.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Walter “Bud” Townsend of the residence; sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Marsha Townsend and Kenneth and Karen Townsend; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Roger Evans and Gail and Jeff Lacey, all of Fairmount; grandchildren, Clay and Crystal Townsend, Carrissa and Leslie Townsend, T.L. and Rhonda and Jody and Sheena Townsend, John Townsend, Rachel and Josh Parker and Logan Lacey; great-grandchildren, Payton, Taylor, Madison and Riley Townsend; brother, Eugene “Cotton” Mulkey of Dallas, Ga.; special friend, Jimmy Blalock of Calhoun.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, July 13 at 2 p.m. from the Salacoa Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Hibberts officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Steve Townsend, Randy Mulkey, Bruce Mealer, Carey Evans, Danny Higgins and Chuck Thomas. Fairmount Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Cantrell
Mr. Paul Cantrell, age 76 of Jasper, passed away Friday, July 2, 2004 at North Fulton Regional Hospital in Roswell as the result of an auto accident.
Survivors include his sons, Dean and David Cantrell, both of Marble Hill, and Terry Cantrell of Jasper; sisters, Mayrene Fields, Marilyn Quinton and Helen Bannister, all of Jasper, and Roslyn Poole, Villa Rica. Seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Cantrell was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Cantrell; son, Jerry Cantrell; and grandson, Allen Cantrell.
The funeral service was held Monday, July 5 at 2 p.m. from Free Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Tim Pearson, Earl Wilkie and Autry Dean officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Andy Bannister, Jack Owens, Jeff and Josh Cantrell, Jim Hite and Jeff Quinton. The family did accept flowers or donations may be made to St Judes Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tn. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Alfred Smith
Mr. Alfred C. Smith, age 76 of Jasper, passed away Thursday, July 8, 2004 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Smith, Jasper; sons, David Smith, Toronto, Canada, and Stuart Smith, Vancouver, British Columbia; daughter, Carol-Lnne Schutz, Chicago, Il.; sister, Jean Greek, Jacksonville, Fl.
A graveside memorial service will be announced later. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Pickens Animal Rescue. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Jesse Lynch
Mr. Jesse (Jimmy) Lynch, age 65 of Canton, passed away Monday, July 5, 2004 at his residence in Canton. Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Wendy and Mike Parker, Jasper, Kristie Lynch, Canton, and Valerie and Steve Fuller, Douglasville, Ga.; sisters, Bertricia Goodrum, Greenville, Ky., Lena Mae Quarles and Elizabeth Hawkins, both if Kevil, Ky., and Alice Marie Moss, LaCenter, Ky. Five grandchildren also survive. Mr. Lynch was preceded in death by his father, James Stanley Lynch; mother, Dorothy Lynch Gibson; and step-father, James Gibson.
The funeral service was held Thursday, July 8 at 11 a.m. from Cornerstone Church with the Rev. Jim Willis and Associate Pastor Mike Parker officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Jim Moss, Tommy, Terry and Gary Quarles, Steve Farr and David Goodrum. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Diabetic Association. Paul Kent
Mr. Paul J. Kent, age 87 of Marble Hill, passed away Tuesday, July 6, 2004 at Northside Cherokee Hospital in Canton.
Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, David Kent, Marble Hill, and Charles and Mary Kent, Yellow Creek; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Ronnie Foster, Gainesville, and Paulette and Perry Parker, Marble Hill; sister, Kate Kent Lamothe, Springfield, Ma. Eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Kent was preceded in death by his wife, Mable W. Kent; and son, Paul Glenneth Kent.
The funeral service was held Friday, July 9 at 2 p.m. from Corinth Baptist Church with the Revs. Dozier Henderson, Huey Holloway and William Blackwell officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jimmy Brooks, Larry Roper, Mack Kent, Michael Foster, Robert Brown and Jerry Cantrell. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Frank Wheeler
Mr. Frank Wheeler was born Dec. 29, 1923 and passed away June 29, 2004. He was a native of Pickens County.
Mr. Wheeler was the fifth of six children born to Edgar and Alma Wheeler. He graduated from Pickens High School. During his life he had many professions. He was a WW II veteran, serving on the Sea Bee’s in the Pacific. His business ventures included M&M Auto Parts, Lawson Chevrolet, real estate and a driver for Yellow Freight. Mr. Wheeler also operated heavy equipment helping to excavate for Grandview Lake and one year in North America on a buildingproject.
His interests were many. For a time he was involved in dirt track racing. The interest that captured most of his attention was golf. After his retirement, he considered golf to be his “work.”

Frank is survived by his wife, Emily Callahan Wheeler; sons, George F., Jr. and Bryan Bazzell, both of Jasper; daughters, Beverly Gayton, Tate, and Rebecca Procter, Jasper; sister, Betty Arrendale, Marion, In.; and brother, Wallace Wheeler, Jasper. Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, along with many nieces and nephews, also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, July 2 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home at 11 a.m. Pallbearers were: J.W. Dobson, Jack Dunn, Nathan Gayton, Chuck and Tony Payne, John Shope and Danny Westbrooks. Honorary pallbearers were: David Allen, Lee Dunn, Boward Garrison, Tommy Holly and Jack Richards. The Rev. Von Hinton conducted the service and Sara Sperin provided the music. Interment was at Sunrise Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Susan Dobson
Mrs. Susan Gale Dobson, age 53 of Marble Hill, passed away July 12, 2004 at her residence.
Survivors include her husband, Anthony Dobson of Marble Hill, sons, Billy Ray Hale, Jr. of Acworth and Shane Dobson of Waleska; mother, Susie Reeves of Atlanta; sisters, Dorothy Isenberg of Atlanta, Lula Mae Ridings and Debbie Howell, both of Texas; grandchildren, MacKenzie Hale, Adam, Erin and Ashlyn Dobson.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 15 from Roper Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Michael Quarles and Varon Crosby officiating. Interment will follow in the Haw Creek Cemetery in Cumming, Ga.

Lolete Little
Lolete Dotson Little died July 6, 2007. She was born on Oct. 20, 1929 in Town Creek, Al. Her parents, Clyde J. and Hattie Thigpen Dotson, were pioneer missionaries to South Africa, taking her there when she was six months old.
Lolete was home-schooled as a child and then graduated from Wellington, a British boarding school in Rhodesia. Following graduation she returned to Birmingham and her preparation to carry out the purpose for which she felt God had for her, that of missionary nursing in Africa, intensified.
She attended Tennessee Temple and then Birmingham Baptist Hospital Nursing School (now Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing) in Birmingham; and then graduated from Blue Mountain Baptist College in Mississippi where she served as campus nurse. In preparation for her appointment as a missionary nurse to Africa, she received her MRE from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Lolete was appointed by the Foreign Mission Board (now International Mission Board) as a missionary nurse to Nigeria in 1956, and served as a nurse in Ogbomosho, Ire and then Kontogoro until 1963.
The First Baptist Church of Jasper gave $2,000 each year she served in Nigeria to help support her work.
After four years in Birmingham caring for her youngest sister Joy, she was reappointed to Nigeria in 1967. She was transferred to South Africa in 1977 due to political unrest. In 1979 she was one of a few missionaries assigned to establish a new mission to Bophuthatswana.
As an emeritus missionary having served 25 years in Africa, she moved to Atlanta and worked as a nurse in a retirement home. She then moved back to Birmingham and worked with the Visiting Nurse Association. Her last years of nursing were spent giving foot care to the elderly. She married Franklin Little in 2004. Mrs. Little never retired and her passion for educating children and adults about mission needs never wavered. She was always caring for and showing love for all those with whom she came in contact. Mrs. Little was an active member of Mountain Brook Baptist Church.

Laura Graham
Ms. Laura Mae Graham, age 81 of Canton, formerly of Pickens County, passed away July 9, 2007. She was a retired textile employee.
Survivors include a sister, Betty Self, Nelson; and several nephews and nieces.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 12 from Sosebee Memorial Chapel. Interment followed in Shoal Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bessie Mulkey
Mrs. Bessie Wooten Mulkey, age 83 of Jasper, Ga., passed Monday, July 9, 2007 at Wildwood Nursing Home in Talking Rock, Ga. following a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 14, 1923 in Pickens County, she was the daughter of the late Wilburn and Mary Josephine Wooten. Mrs. Mulkey was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, John J. Mulkey, Jasper; daughters, Rosa Taylor and Patsy Duffer, both of New Boston, Tx.; Willie Mae Holcomb, Hinton; Mary Lou Hendrix and Jean Jewett, both of Ranger, Ga., Ruth Richards and Trudy Henderson, both of Jasper; sons, Charles Mulkey, Tate, Wayne Mulkey, Dawsonville, Ga., and Ronnie Mulkey, Talking Rock. Eighteen grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survives.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 11 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Banks officiating. Interment followed in Lake Forest Memorial Park. Pallbearers were: Justin Henderson, Cody Hudson, Ryan and Doug Harper, Scott and Nick Richards and B.J. Hendrix.

Sara Gifford
Mrs. Sarah M. Gifford, age 79 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Saturday, June 30, 2007 at Grandview Healthcare Center following a period of declining health.
Born March 15, 1929 in Gilmer County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Lee A. and Tuskie Teems Grizzle. Mrs. Gifford was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Gifford, Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael A. and Linda Gifford, Illinois, and Gary and Betty Gifford, Nevada; grandchildren, Christina and Gregory Gifford, Illinois, and Kevin Gifford, Nevada; step-grandchildren, Bobby Gossett and Michelle Smith; sister and brother-in-law, Reba and Freeman Padgett, Jasper; brother and sister-in-law, J.B. and Elizabeth Grizzle, East Ellijay. Nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles O. Walker officiating. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Michael, Gary, Gregory and Kevin Gifford, Avery Padgett and Daniel West.
