Nancy Grimsley
Nancy Regina Chapman Grimsley, age 71 of Ball Ground, passed away on July 29, 2006.
Mrs. Grimsley was born in Pickens County, Tate, Ga., the daughter of the Rev. John W. and Grace L. Camp Chapman and the granddaughter of George Lester and Julian Caroline (Callie) Camp. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Canton. As a member of Eastern Stars Samuel S. Lawrence Chapter #500 in Marietta, she held many offices including Worthy Matron and Grand Representative to Idaho in Georgia.
Mrs. Grimsley was a loving wife, devoted and wonderful grandmother.
Survivors include her husband, Ray Grimsley; children, Michael Brown of Ocean Springs, Ms., Donna Warrington of Ball Ground and Marilyn Neal of Nelson. Six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, August 1 at 2 p.m. from the Winkenhofer Chapel, Georgia Memorial Park Funeral Home in Marietta. Interment was in Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery in Marietta.
E. Paul Whitfield
Mr. E. Paul Whitfield, age 99 of Marietta/Jasper, passed away Monday, July 31, 2006 at Grandview Health Care Center.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Pauline and Ed Stephens and Becky and Jim Bannister, all of Jasper, and Joyce and Rick Cothran, Marietta; son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Lori Whitfield, Jasper; daughter-in-law, Janie Whitfield, Jasper. Six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded by his wife, Mary Green Whitfield, and a son, Garland L. Whitfield.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 2 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Clifton Duvall officiating. Interment followed in Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta. Pallbearers were: Chuck and Charlie Whaley, Paul Stephens, Mike Whitfield, Eddie Cheatham, Don and Douglas Hales. Larry Lanier
Major Larry L. Lanier, age 74 of Ellijay, formerly of Roswell, passed away August 7, 2006.
Major Lanier was retired from the Fulton County Sheriff's office after 32 years of service in law enforcement. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in Korea. Major Lanier was a long-time advocate for the Atlanta Humane Society and coached baseball and softball for the Roswell Recreation Department for over 15 years.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Lanier of Ellijay; daughters, Catrina and David Hartel of Fairmount and Donna and Jay Allen of Jasper; sons, Jeffrey and Monica Lanier of Woodstock and Michael and Ashley Lanier of Newman; and grandchildren, Vincent, Adam and Katie Hartel, Harrison, Jonathan and Hayden Lanier.
The funeral service was held Thursday, August 10 at 2 p.m. from Northside Chapel Funeral Directors and Crematory in Roswell/Alpharetta with the Rev. Sam Smith officiating. Interment was in Georgia Memorial Park.
Boyd Heath, Sr.
Mr. Boyd "Bus" Heath, Sr., age 88 of Marble Hill, Ga., passed away Thursday, August 10, 2006 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper.
Survivors include his wife, Lois Heath of the home; and sons, Boyd Jr. and Michael Heath.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 12 from Four Mile Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. The Revs. William Blackwell, Larry Beck and Charles Gay officiated.
Donald Denny
Mr. Donald F. Denny, age 67 of Ball Ground, Ga., passed away Saturday, August 12, 2006 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Mr. Denny was retired from Georgia Marble. He was a member of the Church of Christ and the Gold Panners Association.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Denny of Ball Ground; son, Jeff Denny of Canton; daughters, Robyn and Charity Denny, both of Ball Ground, and Donna Beck of Jasper; brothers, Doug Denny of Talladega, Al. and Ridge Denny of Jasper; sisters, Eldie Cornett and Virginia Johnson, both of Ball Ground, and Pearl Johnson of Gainesville. Seven grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 15 from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Brooks officiating. Interment followed in Macedonia Memorial Park.
John Ramey
Mr. John Odean Ramey, age 75 of Marble Hill, passed away Monday, August 7, 2006 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Ramey, Marble Hill; sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Lisa Ramey, Johnny Ramey, Glen and Mary Ann Ramey and Tracy and Elizabeth Ramey, all of Marble Hill, and Doug and Teresa Ramey, Oxford, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Margie and Willie Mathis, Dawsonville, and Vanessa and Jackie Westbrooks, Monticello, Ga.; sisters, Bertha Berry, Conyers, and Ruby Pierce, Alto, Ga. Twenty-three grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, August 11 at 2 p.m. from Refuge Baptist Church with the Revs. Jeff Wilkie and Steve Chadwick officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery with local Chapter #47 DAV in charge of military graveside services.
Ruby Bare
Mrs. Ruby Watson Bare, age 92 of Dalton, Ga., passed away Sunday, August 31, 2006 at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton.
Mrs. Bare is survived by nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doss Bare, and her parents, Huston and Lillie Dyre Watson.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, August 16 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Tatum officiating. Interment followed in the Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery in the Ludville Community.
Lois Walraven
Mrs. Lois E. Walraven, age 85 of the Corinth Community in Resaca, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2006 at Chatsworth Nursing Home following several years of declining health.
Mrs. Walraven was born in Cherokee County, Ga. on May 9, 1921, the daughter of the late Andrew and Ola Jones Edwards. She was the happiest when she was gardening and taking care of her many flowers. Mrs. Walraven was preceded in death by brothers, J.L. Edwards of Fairmount and Barnwell Edwards of Talking Rock.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Bessie and Bobby Durham of Chatsworth and Frances and Glen Burchett of Ranger; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Judy Walraven of Resaca; sisters and brothers-in-law, Dessie and Loye Caylor of Hinton and Bessa and Cecil Cochran of Fairmount; brother, A.C. Edwards of Talking Rock; sister-in-law, Faye Edwards of Fairmount; grandson and wife, Tony and Sabrina Williams of Calhoun; and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Makailia and Jessye Williams. Eight nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, August 15 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Talent and grandson Tony Williams officiating. Interment followed in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Gay Grizzle conducting the graveside service.
James Stallworth
Mr. James Owen Stallworth, Sr., age 79 of Tate, Ga., passed away in the afternoon of August 1, 2006 with his family by his side.
As the result of extensive injuries suffered in an auto accident on June 19, he had been hospitalized for six weeks in the 7-L Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Grady Memorial Hospital where he had received superb care from the doctors, nurses and other staff members. The family wishes to thank Dr. Submaranian, Dr. Tibbs and Troy Johnson, RN, for especially expert and compassionate care.
The youngest of eight children born to the late Julia Ophelia and Marion Franklin Stallworth, he is survived by one sibling, Watson Stallworth of Dunwoody. To his children, Linda Stallworth Williams of Big Canoe and James Owen Stallworth, Jr. of Atlanta, he was a Dad beyond compare: patient, wise and always a giver of unconditional love. His grandchildren also benefitted from these traits. Laura LeAnne Williams of Indianapolis, In. and Max Brenton (Brent) Williams of Norman, Ok. loved their Granddaddy immensely and, in recent years, Ginger Harkey, Brent's significant other, had adopted "Granddaddy" as well.
Other survivors include a devoted son-in-law and close buddy, Max Virgil Williams; brothers-in-law, Lyman Collins and Harry Sullivan; sister-in-law, Shirley Stallworth; a number of nieces and nephews; former co-workers at Sinclair Oil; and his devoted canine companion, Ashley.
An employee in the accounting department of Sinclair Oil for 20 years, Mr. Stallworth was also a fair and expert umpire for American Legion and Belvedere Little League and Babe Ruth League games for 10 years. In addition, he was a lifelong devoted fan of all Atlanta sports teams - whether they were winning or losing. All of us will miss him greatly and love him forever.
A graveside memorial service to honor Mr. Stallworth's life was held at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga. on Friday, August 4 at 1 p.m. A proud World War II veteran, he was buried with military honors. Joan Philyaw
Mrs. Joan Philyaw, age 70 of Woodstock, passed away August 13, 2006.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Drane of Marietta; sisters, Judy Pearce and Dot Davis, both of Woodstock; and one grandson.
The funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Reece Memorial Chapel of Woodstock Funeral Home with interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.
William Blankenship
Mr. William E. Blankenship III, age 74 of Jasper, passed away at his
residence early Sunday evening, July 17, 2005.
Mr. Blankenship was very active in the Lions Club having been a member
for 31 years and he was a Past Governor of Lions. He was active in the Eye
Bank program which he had served for 20 years. Mr. Blankenship had worked
diligently in relief efforts in Guatemala and other countries, but his
primary efforts were in Guatemala where he had delivered used eyeglasses for
the Lions Club. He was also instrumental in securing gifts for that
country’s many children and he had helped provide equipment for some of
their governmental agencies.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Blankenship, Jasper; step-son and
daughter-in-law, James and Merilea Peffley, Dallas; daughter, Tammy Hall,
Douglasville; brother, Jay Blankenship, Ohio. Eight grandchildren, a niece
and two nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 21 from the
Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Gerald Faulkner officiating.
Interment will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper.
Cola Welch
Mrs. Cola Maxine Pope Welch, age 88 of McDonough, passed away Friday,
July 1, 2005 at the Henry Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 23, 1917 in Butts County to the late Senie Agnes
Tolbert Pope and the late A. H. (Buddy) Pope. After being educated in Butts
County public schools, she received her BS degree in Education from Georgia
State College for Women and began her cadet teaching in Moultrie, Ga. She
later took a teaching position and taught in Moultrie for two years.
In 1940 she married Andrew Jackson (Cap) Welch, Sr. and moved to
McDonough. Mrs. Welch taught in the Henry County Public School System for a
total of 25 years. In 1954 she started her business known as the Henry
County Flower Shop. She was a very active member of the First Baptist Church
of McDonough for 62 years; served as president of the McDonough Women’s
Club; was a member of the Women’s Business Association of McDonough; and was
a member of three Bridge clubs. She served her community by participating in
the Heart Association, Cancer Society, Girl and Boy Scouts, Parent-Student
Association, Henry County High School Scholarship Fund and other numerous
organizations. She was also the founder of the Henry County High School
Band.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984 and by a grandson,
Hunter J. Welch, in 2004. Survivors include her children, Gail Welch
Talmadge Notti (Fred) and A.J. Buddy Welch, Jr. (Kit), all of McDonough,
Blanton Pope Welch (Marilyn) of Jackson; grandchildren, Herman Talmadge III
of Hampton, Tyler Talmadge (Paige) of Key West, Fl., Margaret Elizabeth
(Mitt) Talmadge of Miami, Fl., Andy Welch (Cara) of Stockbridge, Kirsten
(Justin) Scott of Athens, Ga., Blanton (Cap) Pope Welch, Jr. of Beaumont,
Tx.; great-grandchildren, Dane Scott and Caleb Welch.
The Funeral service was conducted Wednesday, July 6 at 11 a.m. from the
First Baptist Church of McDonough. The Revs. Jerry Smith and Dudley Rose
officiated. Interment followed at Haisten/ Eastlawn Memorial Park.

Pauline West
Pauline Phyllis West of Ft. Pierce, Fl., formerly of Old Town, Me.,
Passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2005 at age 83. She graduated from Andover High
School, New Brunswick, Canada in 1938 and attended the University of Maine
as a psychology major.
Survivors include her sons, Terry West, Orange Park, Fl., Victor West,
Alford, Fl., and Christopher West, Ft. Pierce; daughter, Sheree (nee West)
Spears, Deltona, Fl.; brothers, Eugene and John Sockbeson, Marathon, N.Y.,
and Edward Sockbeson, Lawton, Ok.; sisters, Barbara (Curren) Bishop,
California, Carol (Sockbeson) Frances, Rutlend, Vt., and Sylvia (Sockbeson)
Polchies, Bangor, Me. Twenty grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren also
survive. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Frank O.
West, and son, Frank O. West II.

of Cagle Funeral Home with interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper.

Dennis Burns
Mr. Dennis “Jason” Burns, age 31 of Dawsonville, Ga., passed away Monday,
July 18, 2005 as a result of an automobile accident.
Mr. Burns is survived by his companion, Amy Brown of Ellijay; father,
Denis Burnes and companion Ann Shefield of Dawsonville; mother, Janice Burns
Jones of Gainesville; sons, Dylan and Mason Burns, both of Ellijay;
daughter, Haley Brown of Ellijay; brother and sister-in-law, David and
Stephanie Burns of Canton; sister and brother-in-law, Denise and Rick Frady
of Cumming. Three nieces and three nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20 from the
Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Revs. G. Allen Boyd, Jack Kyle and Steve
Chadwick officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The
family will accept flowers or donations to help with funeral expenses. Roper
Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Maggie Gaddis
Mrs. Maggie Chastain Gaddis, age 69 of Jasper, passed away late Friday
evening, July 15, 2005 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital, Jasper.
Survivors include her sons, Joe Gaddis, Marble Hill, and Tony Gaddis,
Canton; daughters, Samantha Pinson and Susan Alred, both of Ellijay;
brother, Jerry Chastain, Ellijay; sisters, Colleen Kowitz, Holly Springs,
Imogene Hughes, Ball Ground, and Montez Davis, Jasper. Twelve grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Monday, July 18 at 2 p.m. from Ball Creek
Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Allen officiating. Interment followed in
the church cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Tim Kowitz,
Michael Hughes, Curtis Pinson, Daniel Harshbarger, Scotty McDaniel and Pete
Hughes. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
John Ruble
Mr. John Mathew Ruble, age 18 of the Bent Tree Community of Jasper,
Passed away Monday, July 18, 2005.
Mr. Ruble is survived by his father and mother, David and Kathryn Ruble.
He is the grandson of Don and Genevieve Ruble of Atlanta, Warren Lawrence of
Jasper and the late Patricia Crunkshaw Lawrence. He is a brother of Lesley
and Julia and uncle to Ian Ruble of Jasper. Many friends also survive.
A memorial service was held Thursday, July 21 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel
of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Holt officiating. Roper Funeral Home
of Jasper was in charge of the arrangements.
Mary Smith
Mrs. Mary Jane Smith, age 93 of Canton, formerly of Monticello, passed
away on Monday, July 18, 2005 at the Canton Nursing Center.
Mrs. Smith was born in Denton, Tx. She was the first woman to graduate as
a architect at the University of Texas where she also was a member of Kappa,
Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Institute of Architects. Mrs. Smith was an
architect for Housing and Urban Developing in Atlanta and a member of Old
Mission Congregational Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann Harper of Jasper. Four grandchildren
and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at her summer home in
Traverse City, Mi. Sosebee Funeral Home of Canton was in charge of the
arrangements.
Waymon Young
Mr. Waymon M. Young of Jasper passed away Monday, July 11, 2005 at Emory
University Hospital.
Survivors include his sons, Larry, Jimmy, Michael, Gary and Ricky Young,
all of Jasper; daughter, Patsy Thacker of Jasper; and brother, Marvin Young
of Ranger. Eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 14 from the Chapel of
Roper Funeral Home with the Revs. Clay Fountain and Rembert Hancock
officiating. Interment followed in Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery in
Jasper.
Wayne Patterson
Mr. Wayne C. Patterson, age 87, of the West Rome community, passed away
at his residence on Thursday, July 21, 2005 as the result of an extended
illness.
Mr. Patterson was a native of Fannin County, Ga. He was born August 1,
1917 in McCaysville, Ga., the son of the late Nathan Morgan and Pearl Davis
Patterson. They later moved to Tate, Ga. in Pickens County in 1927. Mr.
Patterson graduated from Tate High School in 1936. He moved to Rome in 1937,
entering employment with Celeanse Fibers Company, with whom for 38 years he
worked as a steam-electrical engineer and foreman of the power plant.
Mr. Patterson was married to Marie Chapman Patterson in August 1939. She
preceded him in death on August 16, 2000. He was survived by three children,
David Patterson (wife Rachel), Woodstock, Ga., Phillip Patterson (wife Mary)
and Rebecca Patterson, all of Rome; four grandchildren, Angie Graves of
Douglasville, Amanda Edwards of Dalton and Beth Nguyen and Jon Patterson,
both of Lawrenceville; two great- grandsons, Michael Nguyen of Lawrenceville
and Nolen Graves of Douglasville.
Mr. Patterson was a deacon of Fellowship Baptist Church for almost 50
years, chairman of the Building Committee on two separate occasions, Bible
teacher at Riverview Nursing Home for 17 1/2 years, having missed only six
Sundays during that time. Mr. Patterson was a faithful Christian man who
lived his faith, loved the Lord, was caring and humble, and gave
sacrificially to others. He leaves a lasting and loving impression on all
who knew him.
The funeral service was held July 23 at 4:30 p.m. from the Oaknoll Chapel
of the Jennings Funeral Home with the Revs. Jason Stockton and Billy
Kitchens officiating. Active deacons served as pallbearers. The following
served as honorary pallbearers: Winston McKinney, Charles Padgett, George
Johnston, Ralph Crane, Wayne Matthews, Connor Whorton, Tom Medlock, Robert
Weaver, Marvin Davis and Jerry Wood. Private interment was beside his
beloved wife Marie at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Tate on Sunday
at 1:30 p.m. Floral arrangements were accepted or contributions may be made
to Heyman Hospice, c/o Floyd Medical Center, to Gideon International, c/o
Fellowship Baptist Church or to the local chapter of the Northwest Georgia
