Bill Forest, Sr.
William (Bill) Franklin Forest, Sr., 82, a Georgetown, Tx. resident for 51 years, passed away on August 20, 2006 at Georgetown Hospital. Bill Forest was born and raised in Jasper, Ga., the oldest of seven children of Granville Wade and Eva Dora Forest.
Widely known as a family man of many skills and few words, Bill was a land surveyor, a carpenter, an avid golfer and a ham/CB radio enthusiast. Wife Mickey and their four children, W.F. Forest Jr., Kathryn Heidemann, Duncan Lee Forest and Beth Ann Forest, survive him. He was also blessed with seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Sisters Betty Stenger and Martha Ann Mobley remain in Georgia "amongst" their family members. Brother James Wade Forrest lives with his family in Central Texas and brother Tracy Grant Forest has settled his family in Tennessee.
Bill served in the Army Air Corps as weather forecaster. In 1944, prior to departing for action in Italy, he and Mickey were married. Bill relocated his family to Georgetown in 1955, serving as county surveyor and founding a land surveying business that occupied his time and energy until his retirement in 1989. As part of his legacy, Forest Surveying & Mapping Co. continues to be run by his family.
Always involved in the life of the community, some of his civic interests and pursuits included: Georgetown Country Club, Optimist International and the Texas Surveyor Association, being the 101st surveyor to be registered in the state of Texas.
Although Bill left Georgia years ago, the speech patterns of the mountains and his "kin" never left him. Family members who resided near Sharp Top Mountain along the Blue Ridge chain in Georgia precede Bill in death. Brothers John Henry Forest and Larry Lee Forest "passed on yonder" to join their parents and other family members who settled the Baptist and Quaker communities along the Appalachian Trail between Virginia and Georgia. A family member will return Bill's ashes to his roots in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northern Georgia to rejoin his many relations of the "Forrester family." Interrelated to the family names of Cantrell, Chastain, Fields, Graham, Haas, Hightower, Mullinax, Norton, Pendley, Pugh, Taylor, Shipman and West, these families were the early settlers of Pickens and Gilmer counties. He'll see "you'uns" when you get there.
At his request, the Forest clan will gather to remember Bill and recount the joys and triumphs of his life. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or a favorite charity.
