Thelma Jones
Mrs. Thelma Louise Miller Jones went home to her Saviour on August
30, 2004 at age 87 surrounded by her loving children and grandchildren at
her residence in Talking Rock, Ga. She was born Feb. 5, 1917 in Atlanta,
Ga. to her parents, Royal C. Miller and Bonnie Belle Burnes. Her father¹s
lineage goes back to George Washington¹s mother, Mary Ball, and her mother¹s
lineage is from the William Burnes¹ of North Carolina and James A. Bryant, Sr.
of Tennessee.
On June 3, 1933, Thelma married John R. Jones from Oklahoma and
eventually bore him nine children, miscarrying two others. In 1958 she
had cervical cancer and this left her with several health problems and, in
later years, she lost several inches in height due to osteoporosis. She had
become an accomplished seamstress, due to the teachings of her Aunt Leola
Burnes. Her children benefited from this skill, as well as friends and
neighbors who bought items from her; clothing, quilts, afghans and baby clothes. She
was also a very good cook, as she said, due to the necessity of feeding
such a large family.
Around 1966-67, she began working outside the home for Kiddie Ranch
Nursery in Hapeville, Ga. as a cook, and in College Park, Ga. for about
seven years. The owner of Kiddie Ranch Nursery, another Mr. Jones,
stopped by frequently to have lunch because he liked her cooking. She also
loved gardening vegetables and planting flowers.
Thelma was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church, College Park,
Ga. for 30 years and considered her pastor, Rev. Marie B. Weese, a close
friend as well. Later, she attended Abounding Grace Church of God in Union
City with her youngest son, David L. Jones and his family. Her goal in life
had nothing to do with this natural world; she strove daily to be a
handmaiden of the Lord, living her life for Him.
Recently, she was diagnosed with cancer again, a tumor of the
bladder. Some may say she lost her battle with cancer, but she has fought the
good fight and won her home in Heaven. As she lay suffering, she bade
goodbye to her loved ones, praising her God and talking to Jesus. She was preceded
in death by parents, as well as a brother, Royal James Miller; a sister,
Margaret Zemula Bunch; her husband of 55 years, John R. Jones; and
their oldest child, John Thomas Jones.
She leaves to mourn her remaining children, Bill D. Jones of
Woodstock, Ruby L. Smith, Dorothy A. Duncan, Juanita Jones, Jerry W. Jones (Lisa),
David L. Jones, all of Talking Rock, Bobby R. Jones, Sr. (Sandra Gail)
and Nancy J. Voelker (Harry) of Ellijay, Ga.; 16 grandchildren and 20
great-grandchildren; a niece, Betty Jo Jackson (Robert) of Midwest
City Ok.; and 3 cousins, Beverly Lee of Newnan, Ga., Patricia Jordan of
Missoula, Montana and C. Jimmy Burnes of Riverdale, Ga.
The funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1 from
the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Allen and Rev. David
Jones officiating. Interment was in the College Park Cemetery.

late Boyd and Anna Mullins. Mrs. Dupree had spent all of her life in Gordon
County. In her earlier years she was employed by Chitwood Carpet,
Mayfair Rug Mills and was also owner/manager of 41 South Gift Shop in Marietta,
Ga. She was an active worker in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, their
lending a helping hand to others with a smile. Mrs. Dupree was preceded in death
by her husband, Alfred John Dupree; by a son, Hurbert (Herbie) Doyle
Dupree; and a daughter, Shirley Ann Dupree.
