Azalee Van Sickle
Azalee Van Sickle passed away Sept. 1, 2004 in Methodist
Hospital, Sacramento, Ca. after several years of declining health.
Azalee, "Lee" to her family and friends, was the daughter of
Skid and Lillie Harris of Jasper, Ga., both of whom have preceded her
in death. She was born and raised in Jasper on the family farm known
as Pleasant Hill Farm. She married her long-time childhood friend
Horace Ralph Crump in 1941 and in 1946 moved with him to California
where she resided until her death.
Lee pursued a career in healthcare, working in the San
Francisco Bay area hospitals of Sequoia, San Mateo, Peninsula and
Stanford Hospital over a career span of 24 years. Her family and
friends will remember her for her generous smile, sense of style and
zest for life. Even though Lee adopted California as her home she
never forgot her Georgia roots, and approximately every five years
Lee and her large family would return to the Georgia hills where she
was born to visit with family and friends. One such memorable event
occurred in 1979 when her children, their spouses and their children
all descended on the Harris farm for a large family reunion. The
California cousins were introduced to fresh blackberry cobbler,
haying, lightning bugs and the "branch" or little creek that ran
through the Harris property. They returned to California with jars of
lightning bugs and a piece of desert cactus that their Grandmother
Lillie acquired on her trip to California in 1953 and nurtured in her
home for over 20 years. Of course, the lightning bugs did not survive
the journey but the cactus has been divided and passed among Lee's
children in memory of her mother, Lillie Harris. Many people in the
county will remember the event as it was reported in the local
paper.
In 1973 Lee met Jack Van Sickle; they married and resided in
Union City, Ca. until Jack's death in 1998. Lee moved to Sacramento
shortly thereafter to be near several of her children.
She is survived by her five children, Horace Ralph Crump,
Jr., his wife Nori and children, Michael L. (Mickey) Wilbur, her
husband James and children, Randy W. Crump and daughter, Janie C.
Tarter, her husband Larry and sons, and Jill M. Voorhies, her husband
Kent and daughters. She is grandmother to 12 grandchildren and
great-grandmother to 11 great- grandchildren. In addition to her
immediate family, she is survived by her sister, Mrs. Homer Martin,
"Vinnie," of Jasper; and two brothers, Dr. Berlin Harris and wife
Jean of East Ridge, Tn. and James H. Harris of Jasper. She is also
survived by many nieces and nephews. Lee was laid to rest in
