Mrs. Margaret Brinson Jenkins, 83,
entered into rest Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at her residence.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday, April 16, at Midville United Methodist Church, with Pastor Tony Smith and the Rev. Sue Diebolt officiating. Interment followed at Midville City Cemetery. Mrs. Jenkins was a lifelong resident of Burke County. She graduated from Waynesboro High School in 1938 and graduated from nursing school in Columbus, Ga. She worked as a nurse in Emanuel County until retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Habersham Methodist Church in Perkins. Mrs. Jenkins was preceded in death by her husband, Tyrus Cobb Jenkins (1971) and son Tyrus Wayne Jenkins (1969). She is survived by daughter, Jill Jenkins Schiraldi of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; son, Terry D. Jenkins of Conyers, Ga.; two sisters, Lena B. Dixon of Augusta; Peggy B. Langham of Waynesboro; sister-in-law, Helen J. Bainbridge of Millen; brother-in-law, Wyman Langham of Waynesboro; and eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Hamp Pender, Wade Pender, Bill Dixon, Phillip Bainbridge, Bill Bainbridge and Roy Cook. Memorial contributions may be made to the Habersham Methodist Church, P.O. Mr. Elra Milton Shields, 51,
of Sardis, entered into rest Thursday, April 15, 2004 at the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, Ky. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, April 19, at Sardis United Methodist Church with the Revs. Karen Zeigler and Eugene Shields officiating. Interment followed at St. Mark’s Cemetery in Sardis. Mr. Shields was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Donna Wade Shields of Sardis; three children, Milton (Bo) Shields of Denver Colo., Jeremy Robertson (Brandy) of Sardis, and Bradley Robertson (Lisa) of Augusta; three sisters, Brenda Gail Sparks, Judy Fuller (Gene) and Vickie Beeman (Bruce); and three brothers, Stanley Shields (Billie), the Rev. Eugene Shields (Barbara) and Wayne Shields (Margaret), all of Lexington; and six grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Stanley Shields, Milton Shields, Jeremy Robertson, Billy Jack Meyers, Jimmy Sapp and Fayte Murray. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Surviving Sons Motor Cycle Club. Mr. Charlie B. Singletary
entered into rest Saturday, April 24, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Monday, April 26, at Crossroad Baptist Church, Hephzibah, with Brother Mike Andrews and Brother Eddie Renew officiating.
Mr. Singletary was born in Cordele, Ga., but had spent most of his life in Hephzibah. He retired as a nursing assistant from the Veterans Administration Hospital after 30 years. He was a decorated veteran of World War II, a recipient of the Purple Heart and a member of the AFGE Union. He truly enjoyed his work, but he also enjoyed the outdoors. Hunting, fishing and cattle farming were the things he enjoyed best. Mr. Singletary is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Charlie Andrew Singletary and Mrs. Eva Jane Singletary; a sister, Lucille Mason; and five brothers, R.E. Singletary, Robert Singletary, Herbert Singletary, Donald Singletary and Willie Singletary.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Singletary; five daughters, Donna Singletary Self of Hephzibah, Sue Singletary Johnson of Grovetown, Jane Singletary Loren of Augusta, Jennifer Singletary Hawkins of Dearing and Betty Singletary Bourne of South Boston, Va.; one son, Charlie B. Singletary Jr. five sisters, Addie Maude White, Eileene Harvey, Betty June Newsome, Bobbie Hutto and Faye Roberts; and 17 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Margaret Harris Cooper, 83,
of Waynesboro, formerly of Hartwell, died Tuesday, April 27, 2004 at Brentwood Terrace Health Center. Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 29, at Cedar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Keith McKenzie officiating.
Mrs. Cooper was born February 8, 1920 in Georgetown. She was the daughter of the late Ernest R. “E.R.” Harris and Ouida Murphy Harris. She was a homemaker and a member of Cedar Creek Baptist Church, WMU and the Happy Agers. Mrs. Cooper was also preceded in death by her husband, Elvin “Foster” Cooper; daughter, Cathy Strickland; brother, Ernest “E.W.” Harris; and grandchild, Allison Cooper.
Survivors include two sons, Al Cooper of Waynesboro and Joe Cooper of Dewy Rose; a daughter, Beverly Tippens of Homerville; two sisters, Virginia Williams of Plains and Carolyn Durham of Albany; and 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Miss Mary M. Gresham of Decatur died Monday, May 3, 2004.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, May 6, at Decatur First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dana Overton-Garrett officiating. Interment will be 3 p.m. at Magnolia Cemetery in Waynesboro. Miss Gresham retired from Coca-Cola after 45 years of service in international advertising. She was a member of Decatur First United Methodist Church. She was a former member of the Board of Villa International and former president of the Auxilliary of the Methodist Children’s Home. Miss Gresham was a former district officer in the United Methodist Church. Mrs. Lula Mae Rosier, 79, of Waynesboro,
entered into rest Saturday, May 1, 2004 at University Hospital in Augusta.
Homegoing services will be held 3 p.m. today (Wednesday), May 5, at Waynesboro Deliverance Evangelistic Church, with Pastor Glenn Wiggins Sr. officiating.
Mrs. Rosier was a lifelong resident of Burke County and a member of the Church of Christ Church in Waynesboro. She was preceded in death by her mother, Cora Lee Jones on January 4, 2003. Survivors include her husband, Willie James Rosier of Waynesboro; three sons, William “Stroke” Jones Sr. of Waynesboro, Albert (Nancy) White of Sardis and R.M. (Joann) Kelly Jr. of Waynesboro; six daughters, Letha (Thomas) Chance of Statesboro, Nina (John) Sloan of Darien, Annie Boyd of Waynesboro, Cora (Willie) Anthony of Waynesboro, Gertrude (Reginald) Heard of Marietta, Katherine (Nathaniel) Lloyd of Waynesboro; 32 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other family and friends.
Mr. Charles Cleve “Chuck” Dixon, 44,
of Sylvania, died Friday, April 30, 2004 at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice.Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday, May 3, at Liberty Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Jim Hope officiating. Burial was in Screven County Memorial Cemetery.Mr. Dixon was a Bibb County native. He was a carpenter and a member of the Carpenters Union and Liberty Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Susan Elizabeth Cotten; three sons, Christian, Charlie and Casey Cotten-Dixon, all of Sylvania; four sisters, Janice D. Mitchell of Girard, Sharon Dixon of Macon, and Melissa Beasley and Michelle D. Boykin, both of Sylvania; three brothers, Terry Dixon and Mike Dixon, both of Sylvania, and Cleve Collins Dixon Jr. of Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews. Active pallbearers were Richard Pye, Steve Bunn, Cecil Holton, Collins Dixon, Tommy Mitchell, Daniel Mitchell and Ricky Lewis. Mr. James E. (Jimmy) (Pete) Herrington, 65,
died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at Burke Medical Center.
Funeral services were held 4:00 p.m., Saturday, May 8, at First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro with Dr. David Carter and the Rev. Henry Erwin officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Herrington was a lifelong resident of Burke County. He was a member of the American Registry of X-ray Technicians, Society of X-ray Technicians and past president of the Augusta Society of X-ray Technicians. He retired after 29 years of service at Thermal King in Louisville. He was an X-ray technician at University Hospital in Augusta and chief X-ray technician at Fairview Hospital in Dublin. He served with the Georgia National Guard. He graduated from Waynesboro High School, attended Georgia Southern University and graduated from the University Hospital School of Radiology. He was Methodist and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro, former member of Pastor-Parish Committee, member of Scrap Gresham Sunday School class and taught the sixth grade Sunday School class. Mr. Herrington was preceded in death by his parents, Henry C. and Clyde Hankerson Herrington; sister, Jewell H. Drew; and brother, Robert C. Herrington.
He is survived by his wife, Faye Flakes Herrington of Waynesboro; three sons, Britt Herrington of Waynesboro, Jeffery Herrington of Statesboro and Michael Herrington of Myrtle Beach, S.C. and his cocker spaniel, Heidi Herrington of Waynesboro; a brother, Carroll (Khaki) Herrington of Statesboro; a sister Rose Herrington Jones of Sumter, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Bobby Bolton, David Drew, Russell Flakes, Gary Flakes, Shawn Black, Seebie Kirkland, Bill Tinley and Tim Flakes. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Scrap Gresham Sunday School class, Herbert Mobley, Preston Purvis, John Bearden and Billy Joe Johnson. Mr. Emory Joseph “Bull” Williams, 79,
of Oak Lane, Waynesboro died Thursday, May 6, 2004 at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, Augusta. Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 8, at First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro with Dr. David Carter and the Rev. Henry Erwin officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Williams was born in Jefferson County and spent 51 years in Burke County. He was a retired heavy equipment contractor (bulldozer). He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was a Methodist and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Waynesboro for 51 years. He was a member of the Brison-Coleman Sunday School class. He was a faithful and devoted Democrat and former member of the Burke County Democratic Committee.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elaine Bates Williams of Waynesboro; a daughter, Monica Williams Mahoney(Michael) of Mar-tinez; a son, Joseph B. “Joey” Williams of Waynesboro; three sisters, Myrtis W. Thigpen of Greenwood, S.C., Cleo W. Grissett of Gibson and Emolyn W. Norton of Brandon, Miss.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Ray Brown, Frank Griffin, Ernest Johnson, Porter Cohen, Lon Hankerson, Bob Bolton, Preston Lewis Jr. and Luther Robinson. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Brinson-Coleman Sunday School class.
Mrs. Elnora Ellison, 76,
of Waynesboro, went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 3, 2004 at Burke Medical Center. Homegoing services were held 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at Roberson Grove Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. France A. Davis officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Ellison was a lifelong resident of Burke County and a member of Roberson Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Waynesboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Aaron Ellison, on January 6, 1997.
Survivors include her daughter, Annie Mae Ellison-Anthony (Joe) of Waynesboro; five sons, Frank Ellison (Brenda) of New York, Joseph Ellison (Rosita), Michael Preston (Keisha) and Mose Ellison (Josie), all of Waynesboro, and Aaron Ellison Jr. of Miami, Fla.; 31 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
James C. Green Jr., 60, of Augusta,
died Sunday, May 16, 2004at the Medical College of Georgia.
His funeral service will be noon Saturday, May 22, at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Waynesboro. He is the brother of Lacy Baker and Charles Green, both of Waynesboro.
Mrs. Pauline Cooper Gay
Passed away Sunday, May 16, 2004 in Montgomery, Ala.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, May 19) at The Church of the Holy Comforter in Montgomery, with interment following at Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Gay was born in Camden, Ala. in July of 1908, the only daughter of John Paul and Theodora Mabry Jones. Later, she married Bryan Branch Cooper and had one daughter, Pauline Holland Cooper. She graduated from Livingston University after Mr. Cooper’s death and lived with her daughter in Marion, where she taught elementary school until 1948 when she moved back to Montgomery and married Benjamin Smith Gay, now also deceased, and had a second daughter, Cecile Crovatt Gay. After a few years as a social worker, Mrs. Gay returned to teaching, first at Cottage Hill School and then at Bellinger Hill School. She finished her career as a teacher at the Montgomery Academy. Mrs. Gay was a longtime member of the Church of the Holy Comforter where she was a member of St. Ann’s Guild and produced an annual Christmas pageant for many years. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren. Survivors include her daughters, Pauline Powell of Waynesboro and Cecile Gay of Montgomery; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Leeks Memory Chapel, Montgomery, Ala., was in charge of the arrangements.
