Earl DeBaker, Jr.
Mr. Earl DeBaker, Jr., age 45 of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors are his parents, Earl and Katherine DeBaker, Pennsylvania; sons, Earl Haeg, Texas, Eric, Brandon and Jason Debaker, all of Jasper; daughter, Amanda DeBaker, Jasper; brothers, Kip DeBaker, Pennsylvania, and Lenny DeBaker, North Carolina; sisters, Debbie Walters, North Carolina, and Elizabeth Meadors, Jasper. Three grandchildren, Joey Homes, Riley Haeg and Amber DeBaker also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoyt Jenkins officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Shawn and Charlie Sexton, Jim Fitzgerald, Mike Sane, Gene Mullins and Harold Fendley.
Amanda Herndon
Mrs. Amanda Neoma Herndon, age 91 of Calhoun, passed away Tuesday, Nov.30, 2004 at her residence following two years of declining health.
Mrs. Herndon was born Oct. 15, 1913 in Cherokee County, the daughter of the late William Aurthor and Mary Mandy Mullins Moss. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Milton Herndon; daughter, Bernice Marie Payne; sons, Otis Eugene, John Allen and Donnie Herndon; sisters, Ethel Buckner, Minnie Eller, Cleo Wright; brothers, Coy and Butch Moss; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Edna Satterfield, Jasper; Shirley and the Rev. J.B. Kirby and Bennie and Arnold Bell, all of Calhoun, Linda and Lonnie Mabry of Canton; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Mims Herndon, Calhoun, Edward Herndon, Ellijay, Hoyle and Darlene Herndon, Jasper, and Danny Herndon, Ranger; sisters, Mattie Sanford, Ruby Banks and Stella Hawkins, all of Ellijay; brother, M.T. Moss, Ellijay. Fifteen grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday at 2 p.m. from Town Creek Baptist Church in Talking Rock, Ga. with the Revs. Wallace Parks and Gene Smith officiating. Singing was arranged by Lennie Roper. Pallbearers were: James Bell, Bryan, Darrel and Dwayne Grizzle, Mike Satterfield and Tony Roper. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home of Calhoun was in charge of the arrangements.
Robert Lee
Mr. Robert E. 'Bo' Lee, age 50 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004 at his residence.
Survivors include his son, Chad Lee, Jasper; daughter, Misty Kyle, Duluth; brother, William K. Lee, Ft. Myers, Fl.; sister, Phyllis Poole Sanford, Waleska; and granddaughter, Kabrie Kyle. Three nephews also survive.
After cremation, the remains were at Cagle Funeral Home. A memorial service was held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Brock officiating.
Agnes Long
Mrs. Agnes J. Long, age 72 of Acworth, Ga., formerly of Jasper, passed away Dec. 2, 2004 at Wellstar Tranquility Hospice. Mrs. Long was born Oct. 7, 1932 in Pickens County, daughter of the late Aaron and Pearl Goble Jackson. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Long, who passed away July 2, 1979.
Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Shirley Phillips of Acworth and Mrs. Judy Burns of Alabama; sons, Jimmy Long of Panama City Beach, Fl., Jerry Long of Marietta and Ronnie Long of Rockmart; sister, Mrs. Mae Young of Monroe; brother, A.J. 'Charlie' Jackson of Jasper. Eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Dec. 6 from the Chapel of Jeff Eberhart Funeral Home with the Rev. Glenn Townsend officiating. Interment was in Ryo Cemetery in Fairmount. Music was provided by Jeff Eberhartand Becky Bearden.
Jack Plant
Harry Jackson 'Jack' Plant, age 82 of Daytona Beach, Fl., passed away
Tuesday at Florida Hospital-Ormond after a long illness.
Mr. Plant was born June 28, 1922 in Columbus, Ga. to Luther Sarge
and Goldie Jewell Plant. He was a Navy veteran of WW II. He was an ARM1/c,
serving with a SB2C Helldiver squadron attached to USS Lexington. Mr. Plant
participated in many campaigns in the Pacific including the battles of Leyte
Gulf and the Philippine Sea. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross
and several Air medals, Presidential Unit Citation and the WW II Victory
medal, among others.
Mr. Plant worked for the Western Union Telegraph Co. where he retired as
Regional Sales Manager after 39 years of service in 1977. He then went to
work for Siemens AG as Regional Sales Manager where he retired in 1984.
He was a Pioneer member of Bent Tree Country Club in Jasper, Ga. where
he lived from 1971 until he moved to Daytona Beach in 2004. Mr. Plant
enjoyed reading and writing histories of the Plant and Vaughn families and
he also wrote a book of his experiences in World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Carolina; sons, the Rev. Jackson
Plant, Crofton, Md., William Plant, Woodstock, and Robert Plant,
Tallahassee, Fl.; daughter, Barbara Loper, Ocean Springs, Ms.; sisters,
Kathryn Phillips and Ellen Plant, Columbus, Ga. Five grandchildren and seven
great-grandchildren also survive. Two brothers, Denton and Robert Plant,
preceded him in death.
Interment will be at National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fl. at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the
American Heart Association.
Jim Duncan
Mr. Jim Duncan, age 60 of Douglasville, Ga., passed away on Saturday,
Jan. 15, 2005.
Mr. Duncan was born Nov. 3, 1944 in Brazoria County, Tx. He was preceded
in death by his mother, Betty Jane Williams. Mr. Duncan served in the US
Army and was a design specialist with Mirage Pools.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Duncan; father and step-mother,
Jimmy and Lillian Duncan; children, Stephen and Cindy; step-children, Regina
Walden and Rebecca Faulkner; grandchildren, Destini Gifford, Dylan and
Austin Faulkner; sister, Sue Tapia; and nieces, Christina Bradford and
Kimberly Delgado.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. from Rosehaven
Chapel with the Rev. Chris Stallings officiating. Cremation followed.
Arrangements were by Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home inDouglasville.
Christine Rickman
Mrs. Christine Rickman, age 59 of Ball Ground, passed away at her
residence Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, James and Faye Rickman,
Talking Rock; daughters and son-in-law, Lynn and John Mayfield of
Jasper and Diane Johnson of Ball Ground; sisters, Margie Younce, Raleigh, N.C.,
Laverne Beasley, Ball Ground, and Lula Woodall, Tiger, Ga. Seven grandchildren
and a special friend, James Morris, also survives.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. from the
Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Lusk officiating.
Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Mick Jewett, Cody
and Derrick Johnson, Dwayne Arp, Jim Martin and Marcus Vaughn.
Calvin Stanley
Mr. Calvin Cooledge Stanley, age 76 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed
away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005.
Mr. Stanley was born May 23, 1928 in Fannin County, son of the late
Frank and Minda Arlese Garland Stanley. He was a member of New Antioch
Baptist Church and worked for Georgia Marble Co.
Survivors include his wife, Edith Davenport, of the home; daughter,
Arlecie Andrews, Talking Rock; sons, Charles, Don and Eddie Stanley,
all of Talking Rock; brother, Jacob Stanley, Ellijay; sister, Willie Wright,
Ellijay; grandchildren, Valerie Heath, Alabama, Christie Iverson, Eric
and Jamie Lee Andrews, all of Talking Rock; and great-grandchildren, Haley,
Savannah and Kaitlin Iverson, all of Talking Rock.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m. from New
Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Blue Ridge with the Rev. Wayne
Mashburn officiating. Music was arranged by the church choir. Pallbearers were:
Randy, Mitchell, James, Steve and Seth Stanley and Daniel Honeycutt.
Interment was in the cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral
Home.
Sallie Lanning
Mrs. Sallie Lanning, age 78 of Talking Rock Road, Jasper, passed
away Oct. 2, 2004.
Mrs. Lanning was born on Nov. 1, 1925 in Pickens County, the
daughter of the late Vern and Ova Fields McPherson. She was a member of the Sharp
Top Baptist Church and a homemaker.
She is survived by a daughter, Sue Reece, Jasper; sons, Johnny and
Jimmy Lanning, both of Jasper; brother, Eugene McPherson, Hinton. Five
grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews
also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. from the
Chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Reece officiating. Music
was by the Ladies Choir of Mt. View Baptist Church. Interment was in the
Cross Roads Baptist Church in Pickens County. Pallbearers were: James Wingo,
Charles Wiggington, Ricky, Keith and Mike Reece and Randy Banks.
Clarence Nix, Jr.
Clarence Joe Nix, Jr., age 82 of Jasper (Bent Tree), Ga., passed
away Sunday, Sept. 26, 2004 at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth from
complications of Parkinsonıs.
A native of Ochlocknee, Ga., Mr. Nix and his wife recently resided
in the community of Bent Tree near Jasper before moving to Delmar Gardens
in Lawrenceville. He was a long-time resident of Jesup, Ga., and had lived
in Jacksonville, Fl. where he retired as an account executive with CSX
Railroad after 42 years. While a freight agent for the Atlantic Coastline
Railroad in Jesup, he was president of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and a
member of the Sand Greens Golf Club. A veteran, Mr. Nix was a pilot in the Air
Corps of the US Army, serving in Europe during WW II. He was a former
member of the First Baptist Church in Jesup, First Baptist Church in
Jacksonville and, of late, a member of the New Lebanon Presbyterian Church in
Jasper. Mr. Nix, an avid sportsman and traveler, most enjoyed many wonderful
occasions of golfing, fishing and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Patty Cheney Nix, Jasper; sons and
daughters-in-law, Walt and Beth Nix, Lawrenceville, and Paul and Cathy
Nix, Canton; daughter and son-in-law, Joanne and Rich Antcliff, Hampton,
Va.; grandchildren, Ginna Moore, Brad, Ashby and Justin Nix, Barbara Jo
Greene, Patricia, Mary and Kevin Antcliff; great-grandchildren, Bowen, Cooper
and Courtlyn Moore.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. from New
Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Jasper with the Rev. Billy Martin
officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to
New Lebanon Presbyterian Church, 389 Bent Tree Dr., Jasper, Ga. 30143 or to
Peachtree Christian Hospice, 3430 Duluth Park Ln., Duluth, Ga. 30096.

Laurence Young
Mr. Laurence Douglas Young of Jasper, Ga. passed away Oct. 2, 2004.
Born on May 26, 1935 in Windsor, Vt., Larry grew up across the Connecticut
River in Charlestown, N.H. After graduating from Wentworth Technical College
in Boston with a degree in Architectural Design in 1955, he joined the
Vermont Marble Co., but was soon drafted into the US Army.
Larry served two years with the US Armyıs 2nd Division in Budingen,
Germany before his Honorable Discharge and subsequent return to Vermont
Marble. It was there that his skills and knowledge in dimensional
stone, architectural design and sales and marketing took him across the globe.
He once spent 21 days in Taipal, Taiwan, successfully negotiating the sale
of the marble used to clad the spectacular Chiang Kai-Shek memorial in
Taiwan. Larry then went to work with the Granite Panel Wall Co. in Elberton in
1985 and with Georgia Marble Co. in Tate in 1997, retiring from that company
in 2002.
A man of the dry Yankee humor that was by no means sedate, Larry is
survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 44 years, Shirley; son,
Laurence, Jr.; daughter, Lisa Palladino; daughter-in-law, Mimi
Rosenheim; son-in-law, Scott Palladino; and his treasured grandchildren, Giselle
and Alec Palladino. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Ryan of
Charlestown, N.H., and several nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the Catholic faith and a mass of Christian
Burial was held on Monday at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Jasper.
Interment followed in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton, Ma. In lieu of
flowers, Larry requested that contributions be made in his memory to

Myrtle Weaver
Mrs. Myrtle Hamrick Weaver, age 88 of Canton, passed away Oct. 3,
2004 at Brian Nursing Center in Canton.
Survivors include her daughter, Ernestine Childers, Canton; son,
Delmer Weaver, Jasper; brothers, Arthur Hamrick, Woodstock, Luther Hamrick,
Calhoun, and Edward Hamrick, Canton; sisters, Louise Miller, Tate, and
Emoline Carver, Jasper. Six grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and
four great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday from the Chapel of
Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Childers officiating. Interment
followed in the Hinton Cemetery.
Brenda Johnson
Ms. Brenda E. Cowart Johnson, age 52 of the Mount Vernon Community
in Dawson County, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004 at her residence.
She was a native of Dawson County and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist
Church. Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, Loye and Susie
Cowart, Rydal, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Juanita and Roger Robinson,
Jasper, Eula Jean Reynolds and Terry Spears, Dawsonville, and Nina Cowart,
Dalton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Brenda was preceded in death
by her parents, Efford and Audrey Cowart, and two sisters, Maxine Cowart and
Barbara Ann Pettigrew. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 from Mount
Vernon Baptist Church with the Revs. Clyde Boling and Dozier Henderson
officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The following
served as pallbearers: Joey Reynolds, Shane Robinson, Tracy Chumley, Bobby
Gibson Jeff and Jason Cowart, Larry Stephens and Kenny Justice. Cagle Funeral

Kelly Byrd
Miss Kelly Jean Byrd, age 21 of Acworth, passed away Friday, Oct.
1, 2004 in Paulding County, as the result of an auto accident.
Survivors include her father and step-mother, Phillip and Traci
Byrd, Acworth; mother, Donna Nicholson, Dallas; grandparents, Gene Byrd,
Andrews, N.C., Sandra Daniels, Mineral Bluff, and Pat Heath, Ellijay; daughter,
Courtney Lee Murphy Byrd, Acworth; brother, Jake Byrd, Acworth;
sisters, Shantell Byrd, Kentucky, and Cassie Byrd, Acworth.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4 from the
First Baptist Church of Woodstock with the Rev. Daniel Singleton officiating.
Interment followed in Rolling Hills Memory Gardens. The following
served as pallbearers: Terry and Jerry Heath, David Byrd, Bo Stover, Dwayne

Lucile Barrow
Mrs. Lucile Barrow, age 92 of Jasper, passed away Friday, Oct. 1,
2004 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include a nephew, James Whitehead, Decatur, Ga.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 from Jasper
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Herb Flanders officiating. Interment
followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. The following served as pallbearers: Mark
Whitfield, Dub Lawson, Mark Moore, Jr., Pat Harrison, Doug Blackwell
and Wheeler Ware. The family did accept flowers or donations to Jasper
United Methodist Church. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Ralph Gowens
Mr. Ralph Harry Gowens, age 53 of Talking Rock, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002 at Gordon Hospital following a sudden illness.
Mr. Gowens was born Dec. 3, 1948 in Piedmont, Al., son of the late Herman and Louella Cook Gowens. He was employed as a welder with Cherokee Muffler #2 and was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Gowens, and a sister, Constance Gowens. Mr. Gowens was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Anne Bolden Gowens of the home; two sons and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Gowens of Calhoun and Edward and Bridget Young of Canton; two stepsons, Keith Ridgley Vincent Jr. of Gilmer County and Kevin Blakley Vincent with the US Army; brother, Larry Gowens of Calhoun; grandchildren, Annelis Jaid and Tara Nichole Gowens. Aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 4 at noon from the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with Bro. Timothy Gowens and Rev. Larry Towe officiating. Singing was arranged by the Gowens Sisters. Interment was in Goshen Cemetery in Piedmont, Al. Active pallbearers were: Roger, Roy and Tim Lyles, Chad Lau, Jimmy Rhodes, Kevin Jr. and Keith Vincent and Gary Moore.
