William Brendel
Mr. William Henry Brendel, age 80 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed away
Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at Mountain Health Care in Jasper.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Nannie Sue Brendel of Hinton; son
and daughter-in-law, Butch and Marsha Brendel of Hinton; daughter and
son-in-law, Sandra and John Morrison of Jasper; three grandchildren, Joey
and Jacob Vansant and Stephanie Owens; and great-grandchildren, Haley and
Alyssa Owens, Taylor, Landen and Leah Vansant.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28 from the Roper
Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerrold Young officiating. Interment was
in the Friendship Baptist Church.
Dorothy Daugherty
Dorothy E. Hayden Daugherty, 94, a life-long resident of Bedford, died at
11:40 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 at the Beverly Health Care Center in
Bloomington, In.
Born on Feb. 22, 1911 in Danville, In., she was the daughter of Horace H.
Hayden and Pearl (Darnell) Hayden. She was a homemaker and a member of the
Seventh Day Adventist Church in Bloomington, a lifelong member and past
president of WCTU, Youth Temperance Council Leader and a past member of the
First Baptist Church in Bedford. She married James Harvey Daugherty and he
preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1972.
Surviving are two daughters, Jan Hayden of Bloomington and Beverly
Schneider and her husband Alan of Jasper, Ga.; two sons, Michael D.
Daugherty and his wife Geri of Avoca, In. and Stephen E. Daugherty and his
wife Connie of Bloomington; four grandchildren, Melissa and Danielle
Daugherty of Bedford, In. Jessica Daugherty of Bloomington and Brad
Schneider of Jasper; one sister, Norene Elliott of Martinsville, In. She was
preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, Edward and
Herman Hayden; one sister, Lenos Irrgang; one grandson, James M. Daugherty;
and one step- son: James (Jay) Daugherty, Jr.
The funeral service was conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 from the
Elmwood Chapel of Day & Carter Mortuary with burial in the Cresthaven Memory
Gardens.

Marjorie Wright
Mrs. Marjorie Smith Wright, age 95 of LaGrange, passed away Saturday,
Oct. 29, 2005 at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper.
Mrs. Wright was born Feb. 15, 1910 in Clay County, Al., the daughter of
the late James David and Sarah Elizabeth Jefferson Parsons Smith. She had
lived here most of her life and was a charter member of United
Congregational Christian Church where she taught Sunday School for more than
31 years. Mrs. Wright was retired from Mansours, was active in the PTA and
was a Sacred Harp Singer.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie and Laimon Shelnutt
of Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Vernon and Lesia Wright of Meritt
Island, Fl., Chris and Jackie Wright of Marietta and Larry and Judy Wright
of Carrollton; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; brother, Rev.
David E. Smith of Bryan Center, Mi.; and numerous nieces and nephews; many
friends of LaGrange who’ll miss her. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Howell Wright; daughters, Shirley Bowen and Sandra Hood; two
granddaughters, Kristi Pilgrim and Kelly McMillan.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hunter-Allen-Myhand
Chapel with the Rev. Floyd Carmack officiating. Interment was in Hillview
East Cemetery.
Frona Angel
Mrs. Frona M. Angel, age 84 of Jasper, passed away Monday, Oct. 24, 2005
at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital.
Survivors include her sons, Jessie Angel, Canton, Johnny, Jerry, Robert
and Walter, all of Jasper, and Bill Angel of Fairmount; daughter-in-law,
Faye Angel, Snellville; sisters, Louise Hall, Mableton, Virginia Martin,
Alpharetta, Mildred Bates, Cumming, and Nora Garrison, Loganville. Seventeen
grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and several
great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. from Indian
Knoll Baptist Church with the Revs. Johnny Garrison and Glenn Heard
officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Richie,
Michael, Steven, Scottie, Kim, Max, Thomas, Tony, Timmy and Jason Angel.
Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Mae Blackwell
Mrs. Mae Blackwell, age 86 of Jasper, passed away Oct. 26, 2005 at
Mountain Health Care in Jasper.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Donas and Claudine
Blackwell, Yellow Creek Community, Floyd and Jackie Blackwell, Ball Ground,
and W.M. Blackwell, Jasper; daughters and sons-in-law, Loretta and Eddie
Brackett, Doris and Ollie Holden and Carolyn and Gene Hyde, all of Ball
Ground, and Selma and Jimmy Dobson, Yellow Creek Community; sisters,
Victoria Buchanan and Azzie Fann, both of Jasper. Twenty-one grandchildren,
32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survives. She was
preceded in death by two grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. from Yellow Creek
Baptist Church with the Revs. Gene Hyde, Ricky Dobson and William Blackwell
officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jimmy,
Chris and Phil Blackwell, Kenny Dobson, Allan Hyde, Freddie Brackett and
Charlie Holden. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Ralph Harper
Mr. Ralph C. “Pop” Harper, age 81 of Jasper, passed away Monday, Oct. 24,
2005 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee in Canton.
Survivors include his sons, Rick, Ralph E. and Frank Harper, all of
Jasper; daughters, Patsy Kunkel, Alaska, and Sharon Hulsey, Jasper; sister,
Helen Ruth Blackwell, Alabama. Eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild,
three step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson also survives.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 from the Chapel
of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Buchanan officiating. Interment
followed in the Harper Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Preston Carver,
Glenn and Virgil Arp, Chris and Bart Padgett and Butch Troglin.
Pearl Duckett
Mrs. Pearl Duckett, age 82 of Marble Hill, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 25,
2005 at Blue Ridge Health Care.
Survivors include her sons, Jerry Burns, Parkersburg, W.V. and Sammy
Duckett of Canton; daughter, Kathy Evans, Marble Hill. Twelve grandchildren
and 20 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Thursday from Arbor Hill Baptist
Church in Pickens County. Testimonials were given by family and friends.
Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Kenneth, Shane and
Drew Duckett, Randy Evans, Ray Fowler and Davie Jones. All great-grandsons
and Paul Fowler, Jr. served as honorary pallbearers. The family requests in
lieu of flowers, make donations to help with funeral expenses. Cagle Funeral
Home in charge of arrangements.
Harry Cook
Mr. Harry Cook, age 80 of Marietta, passed away Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005.
He was born in Georgia and worked at Winn-Dixie and retired after 23 years
of faithful service.
Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Cook of Marietta; sons, Harry
“Cookie” Jr. and Tony Cook, both of Woodstock, Gary “Gibbo” Cook of Marietta
and step-son Ricky Kenton of Aragon; daughters, Sandra McClain of Woodstock,
Janice Blalock of Dawsonville, Penny Thacker of Nelson and step-daughter,
Brenda Joyce Morris of Marietta. Eleven grandchildren, 18
great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and six
step-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1 from Medford-Peden
Funeral Home in Marietta with the Rev. Willard Hamrick officiating.
John Lukens
Mr. John B. Lukens, age 58 of Ball Ground, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 25,
2005 at a residence in Douglasville, Ga.
Mr. Lukens was a charter member of the American Legion, a member of VFW
and a member of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church in California.
Survivors include his mother, Vera C. Lukens, Ball Ground; brothers,
Robert Lukens, Coeurd Alene, Id., and Charles Lukens, Shasta Lake City, Ca.;
sisters, Carol Rose Lukens, Ball Ground, and Janilu Diaz, Yukiah, Ca.
Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28 from the Chapel
of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles O. Walker officiating.
James Bruce Ollis
Former Pickens High Football Coach James Bruce Ollis, 69,Passed away Oct. 27, 2003 with a massive heart attack.
Ollis, who lived in Laurinburg, N.C. at the time of his death, was an All State football player & graduate of Appalachian State University, and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame there.
Upon his graduation, he played football for the semi-pro Atlanta Rebels (later the Atlanta Falcons) and scored the first touchdown for the franchise. He later coached high school football as an assistant in Thomson, Ga. and then as head coach in Pickens.
Ollis returned to Pickens County in 1998 to participate in the Marble Festival Parade and visit with his former players. He also coached baseball, wrestling and cross country at St Andrews.
He was very active in the Democratic party in North Carolina and had served on the Ports Authority, Film Commission & Economic Development Commission. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the NC Community College System and on the board at Richmond Community College.An employee of Mass Mutual Life Insurance, he was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table and was selected as NC Life Underwriter of the Year this past summer.
He was an avid golfer and sportsman.
Survivors include his daughter, Kimberly Jean Williamson of Chicago; sons, James Bruce Ollis, Jr. of Columbus and William Ronald Ollis of College Station, Tx. Two sisters, five brothers and six grandchildren also survive.
Services were held Wednesday in the Grindstaff Memorial Chapel of Webb Funeral Home in Spruce Pines, N.C. Burial will in the Pine Grove Cemetery.

James Williams
James T. Williams, age 69 of Big Canoe, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2003 at his residence following an extended illness.
A native of Virginia, Mr. Williams had lived in Big Canoe for the past 11 years, having moved from Dunwoody. He spent 50 years in the healthcare industry and retired from Beverly Enterprises in 1999. Since its inception in 1997, he served as president of Second Wind Dreams, a non-profit organization whose mission is to fulfill the dreams of the elderly who are institutionalized.
Mr. Williams was a member of New Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Jasper, the Dawson County Rotary Club and was a US Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Betsy R. Williams, Big Canoe; daughter, Jenny Ward, Charlotte, N.C.; sons, Bruce Williams, Annadale, Va., Brian Williams, Roswell, Ga., and James T. Williams Jr., Wellbourne, England; sisters, Dorothy Darden, Suffolk, Va., and Eleanor Hahne, Fairfax, Va.; brother, Marvin E. Williams, Port Charlotte, Fl.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m. at Big Canoe Chapel. The Rev. Linda Whitmire will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dawson County Senior Citizens Center, PO Box 598, Dawsonville, Ga. 30534. Bearden Funeral Homeof Dawsonville is in charge.
Daniel Pomfret
Mr. Daniel Raymond Pomfret, age 58 of Marble Hill, passed away Thursday, Oct. 30 at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Renea Pomfret of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Stacy and George LaChance of Buxton, Ma., Gina and Randy Crowe of Talking Rock and Shane Tetterton of Marble Hill; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Jannie Pomfret of Knoxville, Tn.; sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Dennis Boggs of Bartersfield, Ok.; four grandchildren, Gabriel and Samantha LaChance and Daniel and Zachary Tetterton.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Parker Benson officiating. Interment followed in Lake Forest Memorial Park.
Tim Flowers
Mr. Tim W. Flowers, age 42 of Ball Ground, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Lisa Flowers, Ball Ground; father and mother, Jackie and Opal Flowers, Ball Ground; son and daughter-in-law, Mitchell and Latasha Flowers, Ball Ground; daughters, Miranda Flowers and Lee Chumley and Tonya Flowers and Tony Merrell, all of Ball Ground; brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Shelly Flowers, Ball Ground; and three grandchildren, Andrew, Scarlette and Bryson Flowers.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. from Salem Baptist Church with the Revs. Gene Childers and Johnny McPherson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Mitchell and L.B. Flowers Jr., Lee Chumley, Daniel, Jeremy and David Lacy. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Louise Cross
Mrs. Louise Cross, age 79 of Jasper, passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2003 at her residence.
Survivors include her husband, George R. Cross, Jasper; brother, Allen Weston Boyd, El Paso,Tx. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. David LeGrand officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pickens County Animal Rescue, PO Box 45, Jasper, Ga. 30143.
Frances Reed
Mrs. Frances D. Reed, age 84 of Smyrna, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006.
Mrs. Reed had been a resident of Smyrna for 51 years. She was past president of Smyrna Jr. Women's Club and a life member of the Nelms Eastern Star Lodge. She was a member of the May Flower Society and one of the original directors of the Smyrna Teen Canteen from 1959-62. Mrs. Reed was a 51-year member of the Smyrna First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her sons, Daniel T. Reed of Vinings and Harry E. Reed of Jasper; daughters, Susan Smith of Jasper, Jean Moss of Smyrna and Sara Beth Reeves of Crystal Beach, Fl.; and brother, Harry S. Dewell of Tierra Verde, Fl. Twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6 from Carmichael Funeral Home Chapel in Smyrna with the Rev. Al Turnell officiating. Burial was in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery.
Reba Cox
Reba Lanning Cox, age 71 of Canton, passed away Monday, Oct. 30, 2005 at her residence. She was a member of the Canton Chapter of the Women of The Moose and of Turniptown Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Leon Cox, Canton; daughters and sons-in-law, Theresa and Richard Farley and Tena and Rick Lumpkin, all of Ball Ground, and Tammy and Donald Massey, Canton; mother, Alice Pendley Lanning, Canton; brother, Junior Lanning, Canton; sister-in-law, Helen Lanning, Tate/Canton. Five grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews also survive.
