Mr. Oscar Scroggs, age 85 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005
at WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Scroggs, Jasper; son and
daughter-in-law, Darrell and Teresa Scroggs, Jasper; sister, Lois Harwood,
Acworth; grandchildren, Juanita Scroggs Forrester and Lezley Carver; and
great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Mary Rose Forrester.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel
of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Kenny Morris and Wallace Sutton
officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with local Chapter
#47 DAV in charge of the graveside ceremony. Pallbearers were: Eston Smith,
Edward McCollam, Gene Cornelison, Randal Stephens, Curtis Spence, Bill Dekle
and Barry Forrester.
Rembert Mathews
Mr. Rembert Mathews, age 72 of Jasper, passed Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005 at
his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Mathews, Jasper; son and
daughter-in-law, Gaylon and Kim Mathews, Jasper; sisters, Marie Hopkins,
Woodstock, and Sue Boling, Hinton Community; and grandchildren, Will, Austin
and Hope Mathews.
The funeral service was held Saturday morning, Dec. 3 at 11 a.m. from the
Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Hollis officiating. Interment was
in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Charles Jordan, Freddie
Gibson, Mike Johnston, A.J. Jackson, Wayne Wright and Morris Haygood.
Gary Ponder
Gary Lee Ponder, age 47 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2005.
Survivors include his son, Brad Ponder of Jasper; step-daughter, Lora Bunch of Jasper; brothers, Bob and Glen Ponder, both of Ellijay; sister, Pat Moore of Eton, Judy Mann of Jasper and Maxine Little of Ellijay. Three grandchildren, Teri and Noah Bunch and Ian Denny also survive. The funeral service was held Friday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. from Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church with the Rev. Wallace Parks officiating. The family did accept flowers or donations may be made to help with funeral expenses.
Horace Frazier
Horace “Gene” Frazier, age 75 of Marietta, passed away Friday, Nov. 18,2005.
Mr. Frazier retired after 37 years in the military. He served in the Air Force and the Air Force National Guard and was a member of the 530th Air Force Band. Mr. Frazier was also retired from the Cobb County Health Department and was of the Methodist faith. He was a loving husband. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Frazier of Marietta; brother, Howard Frazier of Las Vegas, Nv.; brothers-in-law, George R. and Charles Fitts; and sisters-in-law, Susan Beck and Ruth Pearson, all of Jasper. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside service with full military honors was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 from Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery. Donations may be made to Cobb County Humane Society.
Elizabeth Ashcraft
An angel was called into Heaven when Elizabeth Ponder Ashcraft, age 93, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2005. She was born August 10, 1912 in Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Ashcraft was preceded in death by her husband, Fred W. Ashcraft, Sr.; mother, Clyde Baxter Ponder; father, S.T. Ponder, Sr.; sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and J.B. Richardson; and brother, S.T. Ponder, Jr. Mrs. Ashcraft retired in 1981 from Pattillo Construction Co. after 22 years of loyal and devoted service. She was a member of North Decatur United Methodist Church for over 46 years. She will be missed by her family, whom she devoted her life. She was the best mother that anyone could ever have. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Larry Ball of Dunwoody; sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Barbara Ashcraft, Jr. of Lilburn and Mike and Barbara Ashcraft of Florence, Al.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia and Pat Patterson and Doris Ambrose; granddaughters and their husbands, Kathy and Doug Sansbury, Deborah and Richard Carver, Beth Batelaan and Karen Ashcraft. Eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and seven step-grandchildren, eight step-great-great-grandchldren, several nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.

Home at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26 with the Rev. Tommy Roan officiating. Interment was in Westview Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Richard, Patrick and Phillip Carver, Stephen and Michael Batelaan, Andy Beledecos, Doug Sansbury and Byran Holland. Honorary pallbearers were: Jim Topple, Bobby Chandler, J.B. Virginia Jones
Mrs. Virginia Jones, age 57 of Nelson, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2005
at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper.
Survivors include her husband, Wayne Jones, Nelson; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Erika Jones, Nelson; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jeff Buck, Jasper; brothers, Charles Ballew, Blue Ridge, and Terry Ballew, California; and grandchildren, Emily and Ashtyn Jones, Jeffrey, Savannah and Dalton Buck.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Barnum officiating. The family will receive friends at Cagle’s from noon Saturday until the memorial service at 2. The family will accept potted plants or donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
Frank Hill
Frank Joseph Hill, age 73 of Clarkesville, passed away Sunday, Nov. 27,
2005 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Habersham County on Feb. 4, 1932, he was the son of the late Walter B. and Sarah Bond Hill. He was a US Air Force veteran and executive director of North Georgia Community Action, Inc. Mr. Hill was a lifetime member of VFW Post #7720 and a member of the Clarkesville Masonic Lodge #325 F&AM. He also enjoyed fishing and was a member of Hills Crossing Baptist Church. Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his brothers, Hugh and James, and sister, Ann Tallent. Survivors include his wife, Frances Scroggs Hill of Clarkesville; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Shelia Hill of Clarkesville; brothers, Donald E. and Verner Hill, both of Clarkesville; sisters, Margaret Arrowood and Sandra Meeks, both of Clarkesville, and Mary Ruth Fuller and Grace Elaine Hill, both of Mt. Holly, N.C. Grandsons, Zachary and Jacob Hill, also survive. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30 from the Chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart with the Rev. Donald Holbrook officiating. Interment will be in VFW Memorial Park.

Mr. Norman Dewey Smith, age 67 of Talking Rock, passed away Sunday, Nov. 27, 2005 at his residence. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Smith of the home; sons, Tony and Jason Smith, both of Talking Rock, and Steve “Beef” Smith of Jasper; mother,
Jewell Waters Smith, Jasper; sisters, Janelle Phillips, Alabama, Lucy and

and Junior Smith of Ellijay; grandchildren, Tifani, Dakota and Zachary Smith, all of Jasper, and Kolby Kinnett, Talking Rock.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. from the Berean Baptist Church with the body to lie-in-state from 1-2 p.m. The Revs. Wallace Parks and Joey Patterson will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.
Marian Crawford
Mrs. Marian Elizabeth Crawford, age 85 of Blairsville, Ga., passed away
Friday, Nov. 25, 2005 at Union County Nursing Home. Mrs. Crawford was born Saturday, Sept. 11, 1920 in Brevard County, N.C. to the late Kosey B. Johnson and Mary Wallen Johnson. She moved to Blairsville 30 years ago from Marietta, Ga. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Union County, United Methodist Women and Order of the Eastern Star, she was preceded in death by husband, Joffre “Jock” Crawford, and brothers, Kenneth and Jack Johnson.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Mickey and Bill Dodge of
Savannah, Ga; brother, Clifford Johnson of Weaverville, N.C.; sisters, Nancy
Browning of Weaverville, Frances Parris of Bryson City, N.C. and Betty Banks

Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating. Music was
provided by Jeff Bauman and Cheryl Morris. Interment was in Union Memory

Wesley Rittenberry
Mr. Wesley Rittenberry, age 25 of Talking Rock, Ga., passed away Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005 in Atlanta.
Survivors include his parents, Rick and Vicki Rittenberry, Talking Rock; grandparents, Loyd and Betty Rittenberry, Whitestone, and Mary Nell Chester,
Chatsworth; brother, Andy Rittenberry, Canton; and sister, Lynn Buckner, Talking Rock. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerrold Young officiating. Interment will be in Town Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Frankie Tatum, age 84 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2005 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Cindy Tatum, Toccoa, Ga., and Sandra and David Haisten, Jackson, Ga.; sister, Gladys Eubanks, Atlanta; grandchildren, Michael and Melissa Haisten, Atlanta, and Amy Haisten, Jackson.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15 from Cool Springs Baptist Church in Tate with the Revs. Eddie Martin and Von Hinton and Dr. Charlie Boggan officiating. Bonnie Kelley
Mrs. Bonnie Kelley, age 83 of the Ludville Community, passed away Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003 at Wildwood Nursing Home.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, E.C. and Gena Kelley, Ludville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Glenda Herndon, Blue Ridge, Ben and Evelyn Herndon, Harrison, Tn., and Junior and Nell Herndon, Hinton Community; granddaughter, Brooke Kelley, Ludville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Coy Evans
Mr. Coy Evans, age 91 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Effie Evans, Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Troy and Joyce Evans, Tate, Jerry and Pat Evans, Jasper, and Grady and June Evans, Atlanta; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Steve Stephens, Marietta; brothers, Roy Evans, Dawsonville, and Cecil Evans, Ellijay; sisters, Mabel Morton, Maryville, Tn., Leola Evans and Ora Reece, both of Ellijay. Seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.

Interment was in Clear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Gilmer County. Pallbearers were: Donald Reece, Charles Wright, Gene Landers, Jerry A., Gary and Tommy Evans. Herschel O’Bryant
Mr. Herschel E. O’Bryant, age 88 of Tate, passed away Friday, Dec. 12, 2003 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine O’Bryant, Tate; daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Harry Jinks, Ball Ground, and Sally and Tony Eubanks, Canton; three grandchildren, Scott, Rhonda and Tracy; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Madison.
The funeral service was held Sunday Dec. 14 at 3 p.m. from the Tate United Methodist Church with the Revs. Parker Benson and Thom Shore officiating. Interment was in Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The North Georgia Honor Guard was in charge of the graveside service. Upon arrival of the cortege, a bag-piper performed selected music on bag pipes and upon conclusion of the graveside rites “Taps” was rendered on this lovely instrument. Pallbearers were: Don Mills, Bill Coker, Greg Cooley, Billy Olsen, Jeff Meeks, Erin, DeWitt and Dylan Sosebee. the Men’s Club served as honorary pallbearers. Mrs. Lorene Wigington, age 84 of Dawson County, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at her residence.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Sandra Wigington, Dawson County; five grandchildren, Keith, Shane, Susan, Misty and Thomas Wigington; three great-grandchildren, Adam, Kandace and Dewey Wigington.

Marjorie Ford
Marjorie Cannon Ford, age 86 of Loganville, Ga., passed away Dec. 8, 2003.
Mrs. Ford was retired from Sears & Roebuck Co. after a number of years.
She is survived by sisters, Cleo and Esco Fouts of Dawsonville, Willie Johnson of Jasper, Faye and Melvin Mabrey of Loganville, Jimmie Fausett of Dawsonville, Ann Roper of Jasper; brother, Eugene and Annette Anderson of Jasper. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 11 at 3 p.m. from Wages Snellville Chapel. Interment was in Snellville Historical Cemetery.

Mr. James E. Conner, age 61 of Marble Hill, passed away Monday, Dec. 8, 2003 at WellStar Cobb Hospital in Smyrna.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Conner, Marble Hill; mother, Edith Conner, Marble Hill; son, Michael Conner, Marble Hill; daughter, Lana Conner, Marble Hill; brother, Grady Conner, Hickory Flat; sisters, Sylvia Aikens, Marble Hill, and Barbara Puckett, Woodstock.

William Strickland
Mr. William Roy Strickland, age 79 of Tate, Ga., passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper.
Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Stephen Strickland, Mableton, and Kendall and Amy Strickland, Atlanta; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Harold Mann, St. Petersburg, Fl., and Alice and Randall Spain, Conyers, Ga.; brothers, Ralph Strickland, East Ridge, Tn., and Doyle Strickland, Austell, Ga.; sister, Carol Zavesky, Lilburn, Ga. Fifteen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles O. Walker officiating. Entombment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum in Jasper. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
Lucille Martin
Lucille Mayes Martin, age 91 of Ball Ground, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003 at her residence.
Ms. Martin was born Nov. 21, 1911 in Lumpkin County, daughter of John Grover and Amma Ophelia Adams Mayes. She was the widow of Col. Lewis Tabor Martin.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Evelyn Martin and Peyton McQuary of Marietta and Martha Martin Raby of Ball Ground; son and daughter-in-law, William “Bill” Tabor and Margaret Martin of Acworth; sisters, Cora May Mayes and Martha Faye Mayes Greene, both of Ball Ground, and Nina Mayes Hill of Dawsonville; brothers, Henry Benton Mayes of Ball Ground. Nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Nov. 20 from Logan Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Sanford Willard, David LaGrand and Parker Benson officiating. Interment was in Cartecay United Methodist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Marty McQuary, Kenneth Martin, Charlie Edmondson, David and Douglas Hill and David Mullinax.
Nellie Thacker
Mrs. Nellie Thacker, age 69 of Tate, Ga., passed away at Canton Nursing Center.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Anthony Jones, Jasper, Sandra and Eddie Reynolds and Janice Bernadette Thacker, all of Tate; brothers, Phil Clark of Cumming and Jimmy Clark of Jasper; sister, Bertie Carnes of Cumming. Four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17 from Free Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Earl Wilkie and Lloyd Davis officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Steve and Matthew Jones, Johnny Reece, Bobby, Gary and David Thacker. Honorary pallbearers were: Jimmy and Phil Clark, Lynn Hitt and Robert Thacker. Mr. James L. Fox, age 76 of Ball Ground, passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Crooke Fox, Ball Ground; sons and daughter-in-law, Dennis Fox and Brian and Janice Fox, all of Ball Ground; sister, Stella Grizzle, Ball Ground; granddaughter, Emma Fox.

Mrs. Fannie Mae Parker, age 75 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at the Well Star Kennestone Hospital in Marietta.
Survivors include her sons, Lee Parker, White, Ga., Billy Parker, Holly Springs, Mark Parker, Marble Hill, and Johnny Parker, Jasper; daughters, Barbara Argueta, Dalton, Imogene Parker, Marsha Jones, Martha Bozeman and Tammy Parker, all of Jasper; brother, Silas Green, Franklin, N.C.; sisters, Martha Burrell, Jasper, and Mary Rogers, North Carolina. Seventeen grandchildren 23 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005. He was an equipment operator and a member of Sutallee
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jennifer Turner, Ball Ground; son, Ty
Turner, Ball Ground; daughter, Nicki Lee Turner, Ball Ground; mother,
Brenda Turner, Canton; father, Johnny Turner, Canton; brother, Steve Turner,
Jasper; sisters, Lynn Chambers of Canton and Annette Woodall of Jasper.
Several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. from the
Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with the Revs. Billy Edmondson, Horace
Smithwick and Greg Long officiating. Interment followed in Bethesda Baptist
Church Cemetery.
Marvin Padgett
Mr. Marvin Columbus Padgett, age 75 of Dawsonville, passed away
Friday, Jan. 28, 2005 at his son©ˆs residence in Cumming.
Survivors include his son, Brian Padgett of Cumming; daughter, Gail
Webster of Talking Rock; brothers, Douglas Padgett of Forsyth County,
Gene Padgett of Cherokee County and A.J. Padgett of Jasper; sister, Louise
Neal of Tennessee. Seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also
survive. Mr. Padgett was preceded in death by a son, Randall.

Vernon Baptist Church in Dawson County with the Revs. Shane Milford and Clyde
Boling officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Paul Stargel, age 76 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, Jan. 29,

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Janice S. and Brian
Fox of Ball Ground; brother, Floyd Pendley of Maryville, Tn.; and one
granddaughter, Emma Fox.
