Anna Lee Osborne
Anna Lee Osborne, age 67 of Dayton, Tn., passed away Dec. 27, 2003 at Parkridge Hospital. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dayton.
Survivors include her husband, John A. Osborne; mother, Opal Dill; daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Gerald Hammontree, Tunnel Hill, Ga., Karen and Kenny Boring, Naples, Fl., Michelle and Jeff Holloway, Ellijay, and Sonji and Chris Romine, Jasper; brothers, James Dill, Dayton, and Jasper N. Dill, Port Arthur, Tx. Ten grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her father, Jasper N. Dill, and daughter, Teresa Cook.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Coulter Garrison Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerrold Young officiating. Interment was in Rhea Memory Gardens.
Theodore Shead
Mr. Theodore (Ted) Madden Shead, age 81 of Big Canoe, Ga., passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003 at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Gayle Shead, Big Canoe; sons, Christopher B. Shead, Washington, D.C., and Timothy M. Shead, Cape Town, South Africa; daughter, Linda Shead Castle, Johannesburg, South Africa; sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Brown, Rockville, Md. Nine grandchildren also survive.
A Rosary service was held Sunday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. from Cagle Funeral Home. The funeral service was held Monday, Dec. 29 from Our Lady of the Mountains Catholic Church with Father Steve Yander officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. with full military honors. Pallbearers were: Don Summers, Henry Bond, Jim Francois, Dave Gray, Gary Richard, Dick McCormack, Don Cochran, Gene Hall, Ed Ashmead, Keith Mosseman, Alan Lee, Adrian Hackney, Bob Batten, Bill Bretherton, Frank Garner, Mike Fobich, Bill Jones and Roy Smith.
Jeanette Turner
Mrs. Jeanette Turner, age 76 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, Dec. 27, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Rupert Turner, Jasper; son, the Rev. Larry Turner, Epworth, Ga.; daughters, Marcheta Cook, Canton, Lynette Smith, Forsyth, Portia Romine, Lanay Foster and Retha Cantrell, all of Jasper, Brenda Underwood, Oneonta, Al., Sylvia Chappell, Blontsville, Al., Sharon England, Tate, and Telete Rickett, Cumming; brothers, Hugh Hammontree, Macon, James Hammontree, Covington, Charles Hammontree, Nelson, Harold Hammontree, Ellijay, and Mack Hammontree, Atlanta; sisters, Donnie Belle Eubanks, Jasper, and Geneva Jones, Talking Rock. Twenty grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Alfred Rickett officiating. Interment was in the Free Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. The family did accept flowers or donations may be made to Mount Ebel Church, Box 494, Oneonta, Al. 35121. Pallbearers were: Joe Underwood, Billy Turner, Shane Brooks, Curtis Chappell, Steven Foster, Johnny Cantrell and Thomas Smith.
Lee Rustin
Mr. Lee D. Rustin, age 91 of Big Canoe, Ga., passed away at his residence in Big Canoe.
Mr. Rustin is survived by his daughters, Gwen Rustin of Big Canoe and Sheila Rustin of Atlanta.
A memorial service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004 from St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Tallahassee, Fl. with the Rev. Nate Bowles officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Georgia Mountain Hospice. Roper Funeral Home of Jasper was in charge of the arrangements.
Katherine McWhite
Katherine (Kate) Wheeler McWhite, age 89 of Quail Creek, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002 at Carriage Hill Nursing Home in Bethesda, Md.
Mrs. McWhite was born in Jasper, Ga., daughter of the late Ulysses Grant and Martha Ellen Pressley Wheeler. In 1937 she married Elbert Norton “Mac” McWhite, a Citadel graduate and Conway, S.C. native son. Together their lives created a legacy of faithfulness and love. After graduating from high school, she taught in a Jasper two-room school. Mrs. McWhite graduated from the University of Georgia and from Madison College in 1940 with a degree in Elementary Education. She taught primary grades at Annapolis, Md. for 32 years. She placed 2nd in her county’s Teacher of the Year selection in 1971 and was designated an American Education Association Leader in the same year. In 1973 Kate and Mac retired to Conway’s Quail Creek. They traveled extensively, including an around-the-world trip in 1975. Mrs. McWhite was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, the Daughters of the American Revolution and Quail Creek Garden Club, Fine Arts Club and the College Women’s Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are one son, Cpt. Peter B. McWhite, USNR (ret.) of Potomac, Md.; one daughter, Martha M. Johnson of Rockville, Md.; two brothers, Grant Wheeler of Greensboro, N.C.and Thomas Wheeler of St. Simon’s Island, Ga. Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survives.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the First United Methodist Church with the Revs. John Hipp and Carl Harris officiating. Burial followed in Lakeside Cemetery directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway Chapel. Janice Standridge Cronan
Janice Cronan, age 54 of Woodstock, passed away Monday, Dec. 30, 2002. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Roswell.
Survivors include her husband, James Cronan; son, Mark Cronan of Canton; daughter, Melody Clark of Marietta; mother and step-father, Ruby and Ralph Atkins of Jasper; two brothers, Ricky and Gary Standridge, both of Canton; one sister, Joyce Chambers of Canton; two step-sisters, Elaine Duke of Marietta and Kathy Abernathy of Blairsville. Five grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday from the Chapel of Sosebee Funeral Home in Canton with the Rev. Eddie Parker officiating. Interment was in Cherokee Memorial Park in Canton.
Bobby Silvers
Mr. Bobby L. Silvers, age 44 of Marble Hill, passed away Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002 at Mountainside Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Silvers, Marble Hill; one son, Luke Alvin Silvers, Marble Hill; three daughters, Barbie Sue Crook, Fairmount, Kimberly Jean Silvers, Jasper, and April LeAnne Silvers, Marble Hill; one brother, Bryan Keith Silvers, Nelson; one sister, Martha Ann McClure. Two grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. James Rich and Pastor Danny Duckett officiating. Interment followed in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Mike and Roger Waller, Kerry Henson, Michael Edwards, Robert Cantrell and Atlas Chumley.
Aileen Brannon
Mrs. Aileen Brannon, age 64 of Jasper, formerly of Cherokee County, passed away Jan. 3, 2003. She was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church and a retired cook in the restaurant industry.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis Eugene Brannon, Jasper; daughter, Sharon Chadwick, Jasper; sons, Junior, Glen, David and Gary Brannon, all of Jasper, Michael (Mickey) and William Brannon, both of Waleska; sisters, Joan and Jean Rampley, both of Canton. Eighteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Jan. 6 from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Earl Rampley and Earl Nelson officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery.
Cecil Ingram
Cecil Lee Ingram, age 93 of Ball Ground, passed away Jan. 4, 2003 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee. He was the founder of Ingram Truck Body.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Ingram of Ball Ground; son, Lanier Ingram, Canton; daughter, Edith Harshbarger, Murfreesboro, Tn.; step-daughters, Nancy Madden of Canton and Carol Wilson of Jasper; brother, Farland Ingram, Tucker; and sisters, Flora Mae Ray of Ball Ground and Betty Lawson of Nelson. Ten grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. from Huey Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ronnie Capes and Ash McEuen officiating. Interment was in Ball Ground City Cemetery. Maxine Densmore
Mrs. Maxine Densmore, age 68 of Canton, formerly of Jasper, passed away Dec. 31, 2002 at Haven House Hospice in Atlanta.
She is survived by her husband, Wallace Densmore, Canton; son, Wayne Boling, Jasper; daughters, Gail Dempsey, Alpharetta, and Mary Garland, Waleska; brothers, W.M. Sam and Charles Fox. Eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Thursday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Revs. D.J. Free, John Henderson and Gene Childers officiating. Interment followed in Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
Julia Richards
Mrs. Julia Belle Richards, age 71 of Talking Rock, passed away at her residence Jan. 5, 2003.
Survivors include three daughters, Cathy Dotson, Jeannie Andrews and Robin Martin, all of Talking Rock; three grandchildren, Kris Martin, Mandi Dotson and Michael Andrews.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Childers officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were: Kris Martin, Larry Ledbetter, E.C. Kelly Jr., Bobby Herndon, Michael Andrews and Charles Wilkins.
Alvin Gibson
Mr. Alvin Gibson, age 50 of Marble Hill, passed away suddenly Jan. 4, 2003.
Surviving are his wife, Linda Gibson, Marble Hill; mother, Edna Gibson, Dawsonville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Angel Gibson, Ball Ground, and Terry and Julia Gibson, Marble Hill; one daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and William Bell, Marble Hill; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Joyce Gibson, Dawsonville, Jeff and Teri Gibson, Talking Rock, and Ann Gibson, Marble Hill; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy Gibson, Tate, Sue and Lindsay Petty, Marble Hill, Ann and Joe Clark, Jasper, and Oma and Tony Tribble, Cumming. Three grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7 from Yellow Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Roy Blackwell and Dozier Henderson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Greg Gibson, David, Gary and Bradley Pearson, Wes Clark and Jerry Wright. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Dorothy Free
Mrs. Dorothy (Dot) Lee Thomason Free, age 72 of Canton, formerly of Pickens County, passed away Jan. 6, 2004. She was retired from Kennestone Hospital and a former long-time member of County Line Baptist Church, Pickens County.
Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Free, Canton; daughters, Denise Mulkey, Signal Mountain, Tn., Phyllis Miller, Dallas, and Valerie Gunderson, Clarkston; brothers, Roy Thomason, Talking Rock, and John Thomason, Marietta; sisters, Sarah Lee O’Shields, Tate, Frankie Jean Stancil, Jasper, and Brenda Quick, Jonesboro. Two grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Jan. 8 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with the Revs. Larry Eubanks and Bethea Fielding officiating. Interment was in Macedonia Memorial Park.
Ella Murphy
Mrs. Ella Eubanks Murphy, age 89 of Jasper, passed away Friday, Jan. 9, 2004 at Mountain Health Care.
Survivors include her daughters, Ruth Bryant and Ruby Bors, both of Jasper; grandchildren, Melvin and Greg Bryant, both of Jasper, and Bill Bors, Kentucky; great-grandchildren, DeLaney Bryant Jernigan and Christi Bryant; and great-great-grandchildren, James and Chelsea Jernigan and Zoy Bryant, all of Jasper.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Jan. 11 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Sherman Westbrook officiating. Interment was in the Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: James Queen, Robert Garrett, Allan, Greg and Melvin Bryant and Billy Bors. The family did accept flowers or donations may be made to The Sarah Bryant Scholarship Fund at the First Baptist Church of Jasper.
Maudie Mulkey
Mrs. Maudie Mulkey, age 81 of the Ludville Community, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003 at Wildwood Nursing Center.
Survivors include her sister, Margaret Stone, Hinton Community; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held Friday, Jan. 2 at 2 p.m. from Macedonia Baptist Church with the Revs. Roger Elliott and Bobby Timms officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ben and Randall Chastain, Abe Hightower, Jeff Hendrix, Jeremy Lacey and Melvin Palmer. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Robert Turner
Mr. Robert Perry Turner, age 72 of Rome, Ga., passed away at his residence.
Survivors include his son, James Perry Turner of Canton; and sister, Vera Brown of Rome. Two grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11 from Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Clyde Brock officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Christian Church Cemetery with Sharp Top Lodge in charge of the Masonic graveside rites.
Sybil Daniel
Mrs. Sybil Daniel, age 51 of Johnson City, Tn., passed away Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004 at her home. She waspreceded in death by her father, Mr. Wilburn Turner.
Survivors include her husband, Ben Daniel, Johnson City, Tn.; mother, Mrs. Prentice Turner, Jasper; daughter, Anna Laura Daniel, Tennessee; and son, Nathan Daniel, Tennessee.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Joey Dubois officiating. Interment was in the Free Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. Charles Wright
A long-time Bent Tree resident, Charles Vernon Wright, passed away Dec. 31, 2003. Mr. Wright had been living in Winnwood Retirement Community in Marietta since April 2002. He died from heart failure. A graveside service was held Jan. 7 at Arlington Park Memorial Cemetery in Sandy Springs, Ga.
Mr. Wright is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Charles Russell Wright and Whit Perrin Wright of Jasper; son, Robert Allen Wright of Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Bill C. Wright of Hot Springs Village, As.; and sister, Mary Allen Wright Johnson of Jackson, Ms.
He was preceded in death by both his first wife, Catherine Moreland Weaver, and his second wife, Bobbye Grant Waldrop.
Charlie Wright was born Jan. 25, 1925 in Waterford, Mississippi. He joined the Navy at the outset of WW II and served in the Pacific on the USS Zeilin. He was a gunner’s mate second class and survived enemy attacks to the ship. He assisted with the rescue and transport of killed and wounded after the Battle of Tarawa. For his military service he was awarded the Philippines Liberation Medal, the Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal (6 stars).
After the war, Charlie attended Auburn University and graduated from Mississippi State University where he played college football. He retired from Lockheed in Marietta after a successful career in Labor Relations. He was a member of New Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Bent Tree.
Charlie served as a Scout Leader with the Boy Scouts and was an avid golfer.
