Dorothy “Dot” Callahan
Mrs. Dorothy “Dot” Callahan, 73, of 300 Woodland Drive, Calhoun died Monday, Dec. 29, 2003 at Gordon Hospital after an 11-month courageous fight against cancer.
She was born as Dorothy Bell Dean, the third daughter of John Henry and Harriett (Hattie) Elizabeth Thompson on July 20, 1930 in Jasper. One of Dot’s happiest days was when she married the love of her life to whom she was married for almost 53 years, Jack Neal Callahan, on Friday the 13th of April 1951. She always considered Friday the 13th her lucky day! Jack and Dot moved to Calhoun with daughters Debbie and Dee Dee in January 1961. They moved to 300 Woodland Drive in August 1964 where daughters Donna and Jackie were born. There they raised their daughters, entertained their friends and their daughters’ friends, and enjoyed their grandchildren for almost 40 years.
Dot spent her life enjoying everything she loved, retiring from the Gordon County Clerk’s Office in December of 1995 after more than 15 years of service. In the clerk’s office she was well known for her constant smile and willingness to stop and help anyone looking for a deed or county records. Many lawyers, bankers, friends, and strangers have relied on Dot’s knowledge to help them. After retiring she opened her greenhouse on Newtown Road full time. Here she did the work she loved the most: growing, selling and giving away her flowers. Dot’s green thumb was known in Gordon County and across many states. It was said thousands of times: Give it to Dot, she can grow anything; ask Dot, she will; call on Dot and she will do it. Dot was a member of the Sequoyah Garden Club since 1962, serving in many of the offices which included serving as president three times, 1969-1970, 1996-1997 and she also completed a term for a fellow member. She loved being in charge of the decorations for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet, landscaping the Habitat for Humanity homes built in Calhoun, and judging the Cherokee Capital Fair Flower Show for many years. Dot won many awards for her flowers and arrangements and was always willing to make an arrangement for any occasion on a moment’s notice.
Dot’s other love was the Calhoun Elkettes which she joined in 1961 after Jack joined the Elks Club. Over the 40 years of her membership she served in every office of the club. She was willing to serve as president three times, 1971-1972, 1977-1978 and 1998-1999. Dot was an intricate part of all the good works that the Elkettes have always done.
One of her most cherished accomplishments was earning her Master Gardener’s title at the age of 70 and serving as president of the Gordon County Master Gardener’s Association in 2002. Dot was a past Women’s Club member, a Room Mother for her daughters, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and Calhoun Band Booster Club member. She spent her life loving and caring for everyone and everything she met or touched.
Dot accepted the Lord at the age of 14 and was baptized at Refuge Baptist Church in Jasper, moving her membership to Belmont Baptist Church in 1961. Here she served her Lord and was a current member of the Reapers Sunday School Class. Dot especially enjoyed when she was feeling well attending Sunday School with her friends, worshipping at church services, and on many occasions she would attend Mt. Calvary Baptist Church where she loved the “old time” songs and fellowship. Over the last year, you would see Dot anywhere with her little smooth head just a shining. She would just smile when anyone asked her how she was and say, “I’m fine.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Hattie Dean, and her beloved sisters, Cleo Williams, Nan Legette, Ruth Teague and Faye Gravely.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Callahan of Calhoun; four daughters, Debbie Thompson of Calhoun, Dee Dee Reid of Kennesaw, and Donna Dobson and Jackie Callahan, both of Calhoun; six grandchildren, Jaie Evans, Carmen Reid, Chris Callahan, Brittany Reid, Dylan Thompson and Callie Artie Bell Dobson; three sons-in-law, Wally Thompson, Barry Reid and Danny “Junior” Dobson; a brother, Johnny Dean of Jasper; a sister, Ruby Joe Greenof Jasper; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Linda Dean of Jasper, Patsy and Bob Stewart of Douglasville, Betty Callahan of Canton, James Legette of Austell, Gene Teague of Marietta, and Hugh Gravely of Jasper. Dot had more than 50 nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Dot had so many dear friends and she had very special connections with her daughters’ friends whom she lovingly called “her daughters by choice.”
The funeral was Wednesday, Dec. 31 at 2:00 p.m. at Belmont Baptist Church with pastors Jeff Hawkins and Fred McCoy officiating. Special music was sung beautifully by Darlene Weaver Wright and Stacey Bradford singing one of Dot’s favorite songs, “Go Rest High on That Mountain” with accompanist Pat Bradford on the piano. Pallbearers included Wayne Branton, Charles Craig, Mike Hicks, Russell Offutt, Caris Roland, Doug Thomason, C. J. Dodd and Julian James. Honorary pallbearers were John Bell, Raymond King, Jimmy Prater, Gene Edge, Bill Bailey, Tom Shanahan Jr., Johnson Defoor and Richard Goble, as well as Sequoyah Garden Club, the Calhoun County Master Gardener’s Association, and Belmont Baptist Church Reapers Sunday School Class.
Dot was laid to rest on a glorious afternoon without a cloud in the sky in Fain Cemetery surrounded by all her beautiful flowers. In addition to the flowers the family asked anyone wishing to make a donation to make them to the Elk’s Aidmore Children’s Home c/o Calhoun Elks Lodge, Craigtown Road NE, Calhoun, GA 30701 or to the American Cancer Society c/o Deborah Bell, 225 Woodland Drive, Calhoun, GA 30701.
