Melvin Jordan
Mr. Melvin Jordan, age 47 of Ball Ground, passed away Tuesday, March 9, 2004.
Survivors include his wife, Trena Jordan, Ball Ground; son, Nicholas Jordan, Ball Ground; daughter, Lorie Jordan, Ball Ground; mother, Estelle Jordan, Ball Ground; sister, Betty Jean Howell, Ball Ground; mother- and father-in-law, Doris and Tommy McFarland. Nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 12 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Ware officiating. Interment was in the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Joel and Craig McFarland, Timmy, Tony and Brandon Howell, Shannon and Craig Jordan and Dennis Wood.
Dorothy Coleman
Mrs. Dorothy Coleman, age 71 of Ball Ground, passed away at St. Joseph Hospital on March 13, 2004. She was of the Baptist faith and was employed as a secretary with the AAA Sanitation Co.
Survivors include her son, A.C. Coleman, Nelson; Mary Elizabeth Howell, Ball Ground. Five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, March 16 at 2 p.m. from the Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roy Blackwell officiating. Interment was in Cherokee Memorial Park.
Otto Hyde
Mr. Otto Hyde, age 73 of Marietta, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2003 at West Georgia Medical Hospital in LaGrange.
Survivors include his wife, Katherine Hyde, Marietta; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Brian Russell, Jasper; half-brother, Butch Lowe, Clairmont, Ga.; half-sisters, Shirley Webb, Barbara and JoAnn Lowe, all of Clairmont; and granddaughter, Brianna Russell.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, March 11 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Gene Hyde and Robert Hutchinson officiating. Interment was in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery with Acworth Lodge #176 F&AM in charge of Masonic graveside services. Pallbearers were: Mike Craddock, Rob Liner, Luther Tidemore, Sam Key, James Conner and Leonard Poole.
Lois Gallagher
Lois Vernon McGukin Gallagher died on Tuesday, March 11, 2003 on her 91st birthday. A native of Hartwell, Ga., she graduated from the University of Georgia in 1933 and was a lifelong member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She was married to Milton Gallagher for 58 years and during most of their marriage they lived in Tate where Dr. Gallagher was a chemist for the Georgia Marble Co. and she was an elementary school teacher. They retired to Waleska and following her husband’s death, she moved to Greenville, S.C. where she has lived since 1999.
Mrs. Gallagher is survived by her daughter, Nancy Sue Middlebrook of Waleska; and son, M. Brooks Gallagher of Greenville. Five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and an extended family of nieces and nephews to whom she was very close also survive.
Lois will be remembered by her family and many friends as a warm and generous person who consistently maintained a very optimistic and joyful outlook on life. A memorial service was held at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Greenville on Friday, March 14. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her honor to Habitat for Humanity or Faith Presbyterian Church, 3655 Reinhardt College Parkway, Canton, Ga. 30114.
Carl Richards
Mr. Carl James Richards, age 79 of Ellijay, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2003. He was born on Oct. 18, 1923 in Gilmer County, the son of the late Roy and Della Vick Richards. He worked in the Coca-Cola plant and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Chastain Richards of the home; sons, Kenneth, Darrell and J.B. Richards, all of Ellijay, and Lamar Richards of Jasper; daughters, Marcille Smith of Talking Rock, Joann Jones and Rita Richards, both of Ellijay; sister, Catherine Chastain, Ellijay; brothers, Hugh and Ralph Richards, Ellijay. Sixteen grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, March 15 at 3 p.m. from Flat Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Glen Arnold and Paul Richards officiating. Music was by Teresa Chastain, Dee Boudreaux, Lee Sutton and Irene Wofford. Pallbearers were: Eric Smith, Brian Richards, Keith Hamby, Jeff Newton, Jamie Priest and Luis Tarintino. Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of Bernhardt Funeral Home.
Ruby Hampton
Mrs. Ruby Lee Hampton, age 91 of Tate, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2003 at St. Joseph’s Health System.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Julian and Lula Hampton of Michigan and Herman and Carol Hampton of Atlanta; daughters, Annie Hampton and Laura Davis, both of Tate; sister, Kizzie Wright of Michigan. Eleven grandchildren 43 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a son, Lonnie L. Hampton.
The funeral service was held Saturday, March 15 from Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Leland Jones officiating. Interment followed at Cool Springs Cemetery in Tate. Pallbearers were: Bill Green, George Bridges, Fred Anderson Jr., Jerome Benson Sr., Ricky Benson and Cecil Stephens. Honorary pallbearers were: Ulysses Howell, Eddie Washington and Robert McClure. Flower ladies were friends of the family. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Bernard Thacker
Mr. Bernard Garrison Thacker, age 75 of Tate, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2003 at Wellstar Cobb Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie Thacker of Tate; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Anthony Jones of Jasper, Sandra and Eddie Reynolds and Janice Thacker, all of Tate; brother, Robert Thacker of Tate. Four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, March 15 from Free Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Earl Wilkie and Alfred Baker officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Steve and Matthew Jones, Johnny Reece,Bobby, Gary and David Thacker. Honorary pallbearers were: Jimmy and Phil Clark, Lynn Hitt and Robert Thacker. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
William Schultz III
Mr. William Fredrick Schultz III, age 56 of Bent Tree, Jasper, Ga., passed away March 13, 2003 at his residence.
He is survived by a nephew, Randall H. Lucius of Atlanta.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22 at Big Canoe Cemetery with Minister David Fahner officiating. Local Chapter 47 DAV will be in charge of Military Graveside Rites. The family will be receiving friends after the graveside service at the Broyles Center next to Big Canoe Chapel. Cagle Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Brooks Bird
Mr. Brooks A. Bird, age 75 of Fairmount in the Cherokee County area, passed away March 15, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Bennie Bird, Fairmount; sons, Brooks A. Bird Jr. of Marietta and Ben R. Bird of Conyers; daughter, Bridgette Ellison, Douglasville; brother, Joe Maxwell Bird of Metter. Six grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held from the graveside at Sunrise Memorial Gardens Tuesday, March 18 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bob Self officiating. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Sarah Felder
Mrs. Sarah Mae Felder, age 87 of Jasper, passed away March 12, 2003 at Grandview Nursing Center.
She is survived by a daughter, Sarah Mansfield, Big Canoe.
Mrs. Felder was transferred to McKneely Funeral Home in Amit, La. The funeral service was held March 17 with burial in Campground Cemetery in Summit, Mississippi. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
Annie Barnes
Mrs. Annie Sue Barnes, age 76 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include sons, Johnny, Jack and Jerry Barnes, all of Hinton; daughter, Linda McIntosh, Warner Robins; brothers, W.O. Robinson, Michigan, and J.V. Robinson, Hinton; sisters, Mae Mosley and Dorothy Payne, both of Jasper, and Gladys Cagle, Hinton; four grandchildren, Sheila Elrod, Brian and Adam Barnes and Jamie Chastain; great-grandchildren, Madelyn Elrod and Hunter Parker; nieces and nephews; a very special nephew, Richard Chastain of Hinton; and a very special niece, Earline Wigington of Hinton.
The funeral service was held March 18 at 3 p.m. from Hinton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Keith Willard, Sanford Willard and Charles O. Walker officiating. Interment was in the Hinton Community Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Larry Watson, Jerry Edwards, Wayne Barney Castle, Keith Elrod, Jonathan Gibson, Rozier Wingate, Matt Chastain and Kevin Moss. Flowers were accepted; however, those who desire to are asked to make donations to the Hinton United Methodist Church Building Fund. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Frank Bors Jr.
Mr. Frank Bors Jr., age 78 of Jasper, passed away Monday, March 3, 2003 at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
Mr. Bors was retired from the Navy as Lt. Commander where he served 27 years. From there he went to Maine where he worked in the insurance business until retirement. He is a 50-year member of Ocean View Masonic Lodge in Norfolk, Va. He belonged to the Fraternal Order of Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, SJ USA, a member of the American Legion of Freeport, Ma. Mr. Bors was a Select Man for the town of Sebago, Ma., a member of the fire department of Sebago and a member of the Retired Officers Association.
Survivors are sister-in-law, Ruby Bors, Jasper; nephew, Billy Bors Jr. and wife Nydia, Shelbyville, Ky.; great-nieces, Tiffany, Grace and Blair Bors; great-nephew, Reece Bors, all of Shelbyville; a life-long friend and partner, Jean M. Graham, Hornwell, N.Y.; her children, Judy Larsen and Mike; her grandchildren, Michael and Brandi Elkins, Michale and Nicholas Larsen. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Bors Sr.
The funeral service was held Saturday, March 8 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles O. Walker officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with Local Chapter #47 DAV in charge of graveside services.
“Chig” Gartrell
Mr. Edwin “Chig” Gartrell, age 82 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Mountainside Medical Center. Chig was a veteran of WW II and a merchant by trade.
Survivors include his wife, Marcille Gartrell, Jasper; sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Bonnie Gartrell, Whitestone, and Larry and Joan Gartrell, Marietta; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Joe Jones, Jasper; brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Audrey Gartrell, Ellijay. Six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, March 20 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Larry Kelly and Larry Reece officiating. Interment was in Whitestone Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Ben and Larry Jones, Kelby and Tommy Gartrell, Bill Miller and Mike Bramlett. Honorary pallbearers were: Walden Martin, Morris Reece, George Kelly, Cliff Logan, Don Roland, Thurman Padgett, James DeMay and Ronnie Thompson. The family requests in lieu of flowers make donations to the Talking Rock First Baptist Church Building Fund.
Gene Silver
Mr. Gene Silver, age 70 of Taylorsville, passed away Friday, March 19, 2004 at Cartersville Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Silver, Taylorsville; son and daughter-in-law, Garry and Beth Silver, Hiram, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Shelia and Rick Waltrip, Taylorsville; brother, Truman Silver, Smyrna; sisters, Lois Taylor, Jasper, Annie Goss, Marietta, Florence Godfrey, Fairmount, Flora Holland, Dallas, and Eulene Honea, Cumming. One grandchild, Connor Silver, also survives.
The funeral service was held Sunday, March 21 at 3 p.m. from Ball CreekBaptist Church with the Revs. Clyde Boling, Vince Alig and David Warriner officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Barry Manders, Kim and Randy Honea, Jimmy Godfrey, Edwin Silvers and Glen Taylor. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Lenora Stancil
Mrs. Lenora Bunch Stancil, age 85 of Talking Rock, passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at Northside-Cherokee Hospital in Canton.
Survivors include her husband, T.J. Stancil, Talking Rock; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Barbara Bunch, Alpharetta; step-daughters and stepsons-in-law, Katherine and Clint Whitehead, Carolyn and James Voyles and Jane McLendon, all of Ball Ground; grandchildren, Acey James Bunch and Tonya, Jason Daniel Bunch and Lisa and Sheila Joan Baker and Chip; and eight great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Thursday, March 18 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Gary Gable and Lloyd Patterson officiating. Interment was in Ball Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Acey, Jason, James Howard, George and Jeremiah Bunch, Chip Baker, Clint Whitehead and James H. Voyles. Brian Wall
Brian Weslyn Wall, age 14, passed away March 20, 2004 at Mountainside Medical Center in Pickens County.
He is survived by his mother and step-father, Anne and Todd Morrow, Jasper; father and step-mother, Keith and JoAnn Wall of Jasper; grandparent, Evette Wallof Alabama; step-grandparents, Lamar and Gail Tilley of Alabama; step-brother, Will Mathews of Jasper. Several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mamie and Griffin McGuire and Billy Wall.
The funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Monday, March 22 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home. Interment followed in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jerry Weaver and Cliff Nelson officiating. Pallbearers were: Michael Walters, Lyn Rush, Tommy McGuire, Donnie Fowler, Bruce and Alan Wall. Honorary pallbearers were: Will Mathews, Jamme Cheshire, Ricky Valdes, Aaron Foust, Joey Cheshire, Katie Cantrell, Ronnie McArthur, Trenton Wilson, Casey Harvley, Daniel Green, Dexter Morgan, Seth Foust, Jake Patterson and the PCMS 8th grade class.
Barbara Gardner
Mrs. Barbara June Gardner, age 78 of Jasper, Ga. passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004 in the Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue Ridge, Ga. Born in Cincinnati, Oh., she was the daughter of the late Robert Rory Ferguson and Helen Honeck Ferguson. She worked as a nurse’s aid and was of the Methodist faith.
She is survived by her husband, Martin Gardener of the home; daughters, Deborah Long of Jasper, Helen Leeds of Boyton Beach, Fl. and Karen Ziel of Borden, In.; stepchildren, Jonathan Gardner of Deford, Mi., Valorie Gardner of Orange County, Ca., Leslie Gardner of Hacienda Heights, Ca. and Heather Gardner of Chellsford, Ma.; a brother, Robert Ferguson of Waleska, Ga.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Interment followed in the Lake Forest Cemetery in Jasper. Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of arrangements.
