Truman Whitfield
Dr. Truman W. Whitfield, age 89 of Dalton, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2003 at his residence.
He was a graduate of Emory University School of Medicine in 1938; practiced in Tate and Jasper, Ga. for three years; and then went to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga, Tn. as a surgery resident. In 1945 he came to Dalton and practiced until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Dalton First United Methodist Church. Truman was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty C. Whitfield, in 1984.
Survivors include his wife, Mary P. Whitfield of Dalton; daughter, Martha W. Willis of Hickory, N.C.; son and special friend, Truman Whitfield and Debbie Duvall of Rocky Face; and grandchildren, Derek and Heather Willis.
The funeral service was held Saturday at 11 a.m. from the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Lyle and Dr. Murray Lumpkin officiating. Burial was in West Hill Cemetery. Rufus Flowers
Mr. Rufus Steve Flowers, age 72 of Waleska, passed away March 18, 2003 at Northside Hospital-Cherokee.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Flowers of Waleska; daughter, Connie Pendley of Ball Ground; brother, Walter Flowers of Jasper; and sisters, Ruby Edge of Calhoun, Joyce Wilson of Rydal, Martha Sims of Centre, Al. and Elaine Wingfield, Gainesville. Two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, March 20 at 1 p.m. from Huey Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was in Salacoa Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Hoyt Jones officiating.
Evie Moore
Evie Lee (Bootie) McCannon Moore, age 75 of Ila, passed away Monday, March 17, 2003 at Cobb Health Care in Comer.
Born in Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Naomi and Howard McCannon of Ila. She was the widow of the late Dennis Alson Moore and retired from Commerce Sportswear. Mrs. Moore was a lifelong resident of Ila Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by brothers, Raymond, Walter and Billy McCannon, all of Ila, and Bob McCannon of Snellville; sisters, Margaret Durden of Athens and Mildred Gaines of Hull. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. (Linda) Ken Whitehead of Comer; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. (Mahala) Dennis Moore of Colbert; grandchildren, Victoria Moore, Catherine Bates, Mike and Matt Whitehead and Melissa Yarbrough. Three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Clara McCannon, also survive.
She was a devoted wife and mother and was dearly loved by her children, grandchildren and her friends.
Bessie Mae Faucett
Mrs. Bessie Mae Faucett, age 67 of Ball Ground, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Faucett; three sons and daughters-in-law, William and Cheryl Faucett and Randy and Debra Faucett, all of Ball Ground, and Ricky and Debra Faucett, Nelson; sisters, Pearl Ray of Ball Ground and Ovalene Fields of Clayton. Seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m. from Arbor Hill Baptist Church in Pickens County with the Revs. Phillip Padgett, Sanford Fountain and Mike Byess officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Chris, Lee and Ronnie Faucett, Gene and Chad Ray and Clint Byess. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Carl Pickels
Mr. Carl “Biggie” Pickels, age 68 of Woodstock, passed away athis residence on March 23, 2003. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church; retired from the US Air Force and the sheriff’s department in Talbot County.
Survivors include his sons, Mike Pickels of Pine Mountain, Ga. and Gary Pickels of Marianna, Fl.; daughters, Vicky Hensley of Tampa, Fl., Rhonda Kelley, Woodstock, and Rorri Simmons, Marianna; brother, Sidney R. Pickels, Summerville, S.C.; sister, Ada Kelley, Valdosta. Twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 26 at 11 a.m. from Oak Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Leroy Kelley officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Sosebee Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Johnnie Rice
Mrs. Johnnie Rice, age 87 of Dawson County, passed away early Friday morning, March 21, 2003 at Grandview Health Care Center in Jasper.
Survivors include her son, JamesTaylor of Jasper; daughter, Mona Barnett, Barnesville, Ga. Eight grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held Sunday, March 23 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. John Henderson officiating. Interment was in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery in Dawson County.
Houston Trammell
Mr. Houston Trammell, age 86 of Ball Ground, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2003 at Chestnut Ridge Nursing Home in Cumming.
Survivors include his sons, Huston Paul Buck Trammell Jr., Ball Ground, Thomas Trammell, Nelson, and Tim Trammell, Marble Hill; seven daughters and sons-in-law, Susie Smith, Dahlonega, Helen Dunn and Janice and Donald Jones, all of Cumming, Paulette and Gary Bennett and Teresa Ryan, all of Nelson, Katherine and Paul Holt and Imogene Ridings, all of Jasper; two sisters, Edith Blackwell of Marble Hill and Lela Gilreath, Jasper. Twenty-seven grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 19 at 2 p.m. from Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Revs. Bobby Trammell and Steve Chadwick officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jimmy and Charles Martin, David Burns, Jeffery Ridings, Jason Burns, Ricky Frady and Bryan Evans. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
J.B. Smith
Mr. J.B. Smith, age 82 of Adairsville, Ga., passed away Sunday evening, March 23, 2003 at Gordon Health Care Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Smith was born on Dec. 1, 1920 in Gordon County, son of the late Robert Wiley and Bessie Brown Smith. He was also preceded in death by his sister; seven brothers; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Mr. Smith was a retired textile employee and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Densmore Smith, to whom he was married for 62 years; daughters and sons-in-law, Ruby and Earnest Randolph, Stella and Buddy Leonard and Sue Harris, all of Adairsville, Mary and Kenneth Taylor and Clara and Ronnie Scott, all of Resaca, and Janice and Ben Chastain of Hinton; sons and daughters-in-law, Renes and Lucille Smith of Sugar Valley, Jerry Smith of Lindale, Vernon and Shwan Smith of Adairsville; sister, Bell Rogers of Calhoun; brothers, Roy Smith of Florida and Richard Smith of Detroit. Twenty grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday at 3 p.m. from Union Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Thomas and G.W. Shaw officiating. Singing was arranged by the Thomas Family. Pallbearers were grandsons: Alfred and Russell Harris, Alton Smith, Josh Scott, Michael Leonard and Kenneth Randolph. Interment followed in the church cemetery. George Grossenbacher
Mr. George Grossenbacher, age 85 of Big Canoe, passed away March 23, 2004 at Haven House Hospice in Atlanta.
A native of San Antonio, Tx., Mr. Grossenbacher was a WW II veteran of the US Army, serving in the Philippines. A furrier by profession, he was owner of Mr. George Furs and an avid square dancer.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Grossenbacher of Big Canoe; daughters, Charlotte Elkins, Big Canoe, Jean Brown, North Augusta, S.C., and Robbye Miller, Canton; sister, Sarah DeMasters of Wimberley, Tx. Nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren also survive.
A private memorial service was held. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Haven House Hospice, 5411 Northland Dr., Atlanta, Ga. 30342. McDonald and Son Funeral Home and Crematory was in charge of the arrangements.
Luke Carver
Mr. Luke Carver, age 86, passed away March 23, 2004 at his residence in Jasper.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Hugh and Elaine Carver of Jasper; and one grandson, Michael Carver of Canton.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 25 from Philadelphia Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery with the Revs. Edwin Weaver, Randy Weaver and Terry Dean officiating. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Tim Wisherd
Mr. Tim J. Wisherd, age 57 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Health System in Fulton County.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Wisherd of Bent Tree; sons and daughters-in-law, Eric and Christy Wisherd of Jonesboro, Christopher and Mandi Wisherd of Jasper and Mathew Wisherd of Woodstock; daughter, Barbara Ann Wisherd of Alpharetta; brother, Martin Orlando Wisherd of Cleveland, Ga.; sisters, Barbara Wisherd of Centerville, Tn., Ann Hanson of Lethia Springs, Janie Hime of Troy, Mi., Pat Strebeck of Bridgeman, Mi.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Roper Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
Teresa Ryan
Mrs. Teresa Trammell Ryan, age 45 of Jasper, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2004 at her home.
Survivors include her children, Michael and Brandy Price, Talking Rock, Kelly and Mark Childers and Shelly and Brad Cochran, all of Jasper; sisters, Susie Smith, Dahlonega, Helen Dunn, Cumming, Paulette and Gary Bennett, Nelson, Katherine and Paul Holt and Imogine Ridings, all of Jasper, and JaniceJones, Cumming; brothers, Paul “Buck” and Tim Trammell, both of Ball Ground, and Thomas Trammell, Nelson; grandchildren, Colley M., Kendall N. and Clayton A. Cochran and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Edward Ashmead
Beloved father and husband, Edward Ashmead of Big Canoe, Ga., passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2004.
He was born in Birmingham, Al. May 2, 1924, the son of Edward W. and Nannette Willis Ashmead. He served in the Intelligence section of the 1st Battalion, 302 Infantry Regiment, 94 Division, 3rd Army in Europe during WW II, leaving as Sergeant. He graduated from Auburn University in 1948 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Mr. Ashmead worked for Coca-Cola Co. as a chemist/technician until 1952 when he joined the Clorox Co. He married Julianne Cook of Atlanta in 1951. He rose through various manufacturing assignments to vice president Manufacturing International with the Clorox Co. in Oakland, Ca.
After living in Lafayette, Ca. for 30 years and following his retirement, he and Julianne moved to Big Canoe where he was very active in the community. He tutored students at the junior high school for several years, played golf and bridge and sang in the Chapel Men’s Chorus and had recently become involved as a volunteer with the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center in Jasper.
Survivors include his wife, Julianne C. Ashmead; son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Donna Ashmead and granddaughters, Claire and Monique, Anchorage, Ak., and Ralph and Phyllis Ashmead and grandson Nathan of Tuolumne City, Ca.; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Paul Rerucha, Ashland, Or. He was widely appreciated for his honesty and his wit. His laughter was contagious. He will be greatly missed.
Interment was at the Big Canoe Cemetery Sunday, March 21 at 2:15 p.m. with a memorial service following at 3 in the Big Canoe Chapel. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Big Canoe Chapel Benevolence Fund or to Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center, 175 Samaritan Dr., Jasper, Ga. 30143. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Audie Blackwell
Mrs. Audie Blackwell, age 89 of Walnut Grove, Ga., passed away Monday, March 22, 2004 at Newton County Hospital.
Survivors include her sons, J.B. Blackwell,Oxford, Ga., and James Blackwell, Loganville, Ga.; daughters, Juanita Ramey of Newnan and Mamie Singleton and Joyce Merrell, both of Loganville; brother, Garnett Chumbley of Jasper. Twenty-nine grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren and 42 great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, March 25 at 11 a.m. from the Four Mile Baptist Church with the Revs. Bob Singleton and Wayne Moore officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Scottie and Eric Blackwell, Charlie Green, Ronnie Chumbley, Brandon Mathis, Travis and Tracy Ramey. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Angus Reece
Angus Morris Reece, age 92 of Ellijay, Ga., passed away Thursday morning, March 25, 2004.
Mr. Reece was born on March 21, 1912 in Gilmer County, son of Jasper Monroe and Nancy Angeline Lowman Reece. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church in Pickens County and was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his daughters and sons-in-law, Emma and Frank Miller of Roswell and Brenda and Ralph Hull of Fayetteville; sons and daughters-in-law, the Rev. Euel and Virgie Reece of Ellijay, Harold and Jean Reece of Dunwoody and Herman and Donita Reece of Eatonton; brother, Emmett Reece of Loganville. Eleven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 27 from Crossroads Baptist Church with the Revs. Junior Waddell, Robert Allen, Marvin Chatham and Buck Parker officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Music was provided by Crossroads Baptist Church Choir. Pallbearers were: Russell and David Reece, Jeff and Greg Miller, Carey and Daniel Hall, Eric and Lee Walls. Eli Ray
Infant Eli Tucker Ray of Jasper passed away March 22, 2004 at Kennestone Hospital.
Surviving are his father and mother, Shawn and Marti Ray, Jasper; grandparents, David and Carol King, Jasper, and Herman and Mattie Ray, Hinton Community; and two sisters, Jordan and Rori Ray, both of Jasper.
A graveside service was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 24 from the Hinton Community Cemetery with the Rev. Keith Willard officiating. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Elizabeth Scott
Elizabeth Tate Scott passed away in her home Tuesday, March 25, 2003 after a lengthy illness.She was born April 15, 1926 the daughter of Howard and Elizabeth Shippen Tate (later Mrs. Robert L. McWhorter). During her childhood Mrs. Scott lived in Tate, Ga. At the age of 16 she began studies at Western College for Women in Oxford, Oh. Moving to Athens in 1943, she attended the University of Georgia where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. In 1945 she married Guy Brannon Scott Jr. She was preceded in death by a son, Carter Tate Scott.
Survivors include her sons, Guy Brannon, Howard Tate and Thomas Wells Scott, and daughter-in-law, Lori Cleland Scott, all of Athens; daughters, Elizabeth Scott Atkinson, St. Paul, Mn., Saunders Scott, Point Richmond, Ca., and Georgianna Scott Muse, Clarkston; sons-in-law, Gary Atkinson and Andrew Hirshfield. Ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service took place at the Catholic Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School, PO Box 1983, Athens, ga. 30603.
Robert Fendley
Mr. Robert W. Fendley, age 95 of Jasper, passed away March 24, 2003 at Brian Nursing Center in Canton.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Patsy Fendley, Canton; Hoyal and Sylvia, James and Debbie and Charles and Linda Fendley, all of Jasper; daughters and sons-in-law, Imogene and Robert Richards, Douglasville, Opaline and Forrest Martin, Cumming, Charmet and Carl Vinings, Lawrenceville, Linda Chadwick and Ruth Ann and Billy Sims, all of Canton, and Nancy Fendley, Idaho; sister, Ethel Qualls, Jasper. Seventeen grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, March 26 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. D.J. Free, Terry Dean and Clyde Brock officiating. Interment was in Philadelphia Baptist Church. Pallbearers were: Dewayne, Darrell, Shane and Jamie Fendley, Chad Chadwick and Chris Sims.
