William Clearman
William T. Clearman died in his sleep on April 30, 2004 at his home in Highlands, N.C.
Mr. Clearman, as director of NASA’s Saturn V Project Office, managed the design, development and acquisition of many support systems and facilities for the Apollo program. The Saturn V rocket flew every mission flawlessly, and John Kennedy’s deadline of a moon landing by 1970 was met a year in advance.
Bill Clearman left Blakely, Ga. after 11 years of formal schooling to study Engineering at Georgia Tech. When Gov. Eugene Talmadge seized control of Georgia universities in a bid to quash dissent over his policies, Mr. Clearman took a leadership role in the formation of an opposing student movement that soon spread across the university system. This student activism was a key in the astounding electoral defeat of Talmadge, previously thought to be politically invincible.
After graduation in 1942, he entered the Navy, serving in the Pacific. Mr. Clearman ended a 34-year career in the Navy and Naval Reserve with the rank of Captain. He served as CO of several Reserve units, concurrently with his work for NASA.
Many years after his retirement, he and his wife Peggy left their home in Cocoa Beach, Fl. to live in Jasper near their children. Mr. Clearman was active in churches in every community where he lived, often teaching, assisting in leadership roles with unflappable good humor and common sense and occasionally sharing his NASA experiences with appreciative audiences. A long-time tennis player, he recently played in a tennis tournament in Albany, Ga.
In 2003 he lost his beloved wife Peggy after a 12-year struggle with Alzheimer’s. A highlight of the last year was a long ride in a 1941 Navy N3N-2 biplane trainer. “The best Christmas present I ever got,” he said. He remarried in February of this year to the former Lorene Porter of Winston-Salem, N.C. and spent his final months surrounded by the love of his original family and a new one too.
Memorial services for Mr. Clearman, age 84 of Jasper, Ga. and Highlands, N.C., will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5 at the Highlands Presbyterian Church and at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 7 at the New Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Jasper.
