Mr. Larry Biddy, age 64 of Ball Ground, passed away May 23, 2004 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Biddy of Ball Ground; daughters and son-in-law, Joyce and Michael Buchanan of Marble Hill and Mary Biddy of Ball Ground; mother-in-law, Ruby Hagin of Ball Ground; brothers, Herman Biddy of Ball Ground and Bill Biddy of Canton; sisters, Laura Silver of Talking Rock and Jane Kilgore of Ball Ground. Four grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 25 from Roper Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Don Williams officiating. Interment followed in the Flint Hill Cemetery in Gilmer County. The family did accept flowers or donations can be made to The Gideons International or Georgia Baptist Children’s Homes and Family Ministries, Inc.
Allie Jordan
Mrs. Allie Virginia Jordan, age 70 of Ball Ground, passed away May 22, 2004 at Wildwood Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and her daughter, Janis.
Survivors include her son, Robert Earl Jordan of Ball Ground; daughter, Deborah Jordan of Ball Ground; sister, Louise Scott of Louisiana. Nine grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 25 from Roper Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Corey Rich, Horace Biddy and Wallace Sutton officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview Baptist Church Cemetery.
Nettie Sutton
Mrs. Nettie Ruth Sutton, age 68 of Fairmount, passed away Friday, May 21, 2004 at Gordon Hospital following declining health.
Mrs. Sutton was born Feb. 24, 1936 in Bartow County, Ga., daughter of the late Grady and Mattie Lou Adcock Wright. She was a homemaker and member of Oakman Baptist Church. Mrs. Sutton was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Rayford L. Sutton, to whom she was married for 42 years, and by a sister, Glenise Mealor.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Cathy and Johnny Owens and Gaynell and Donald McReynolds, all of Fairmount; sisters, Violene Ezell of Fairmount and Marie Mealer of Adairsville; brother, Alton Wright of Adairsville; special friends, Brenda Evans, Judy Carlan and Inez Owens; five grandchildren, Mark Owens, RayaLockaby, Kemp, Kyle and Kayra McReynolds; four great-grandchildren, Haley and Alyssa Owens, Juliana and Jax Lockaby.
The funeral service was held Sunday, May 23 at 3 p.m. from Oakman Baptist Church with the Revs. Kenny Sheriff and Hollis Crook officiating. Singing was arranged by the Moss Trio and Mrs. Sharon Sheriff. Interment followed in Pleasant Grove (Ryo) Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jerry Wright, Mike, Tim and Robert Mealor, Greg Bowen, Edward Wilson, Richard Hollaran and Freddy Childers. Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Therman Parker
Mr. Therman E. Parker, age 76 of Tate, passed away at his residence on Thursday, May 20, 2004. He was born Nov. 2, 1927 in Gilmer County.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John Cameron and Rebekah Hughes Parker, Ellijay; daughter and son-in-law, Eugenia Parker and Jefferson Arnold, Cumming; brothers, Olan “Dooster” Parker, Ellijay, and Ray Parker, Talking Rock. Six grandchildren, Jamie Lyn Bruce, Cameron Hope, Hayden Austin and Jillian Adeline Parker, John Andrew and Jacob Parker Arnold, also survive. Mr. Parker was predeceased by his father and mother, Pearl and Minnie Bearden Parker, and a grandchild, Joseph Austin Bruce.
The funeral service was held Monday, May 24 at 11 a.m. from Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Ben Langley officiating. Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum. Pallbearers were: Jacob and John Arnold, Roy Lee Hendrix, Harold Hensley, Bobby Joe Williams, Kirk Garner and Tony Ramirez. The service was escorted by the Gold Wing Motorcycle Club. The family request donations be made to Mount Zion Baptist Church. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Kenneth Clark
Kenneth Clark, age 60 of Canton, passed away May 23, 2004 at Northside Hospital Cherokee. He was owner of Ken’s Advertising and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include his father, Cleve Clark of Canton; daughter, Amy Clark of Canton; and sister, Shelby Hales of Jasper. A niece and nephews also survive.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 26 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Huey Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Terry Caylor and Bobby Padgett officiating. Interment will be in Macedonia Memorial Park.
Barbara Eubanks
Barbara Jean Floyd Eubanks of Tate, Ga. passed away May 17, 2004 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. She had been receiving treatment in Durham for three months.
Mrs. Eubanks was born in Marietta, Ms. on March 6, 1943, daughter of the late George Walter and Ruth Bolton Floyd. After graduating from Marietta High School in 1961, Mrs. Floyd earned a teaching degree from Delta State University in Cleveland, Ms. Following two years of teaching first grade in Long Beach, Ms., she moved to Marietta, Ga. where she enjoyed a very successful teaching career in the Cobb County School System at Bells Ferry Elementary. She taught first and second grades for 30 years. As a Teacher of the Year and an outstanding member of the faculty, Barbara is fondly remembered by former students, parents and peers for her excellent teaching skills and life lessons. She was an active member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, a Society of Women in Education, served as an officer of the Cobb Professional Educators and an active participant in the Pickens County Retired Educators Association.
Married to James Thomas Eubanks, Jr. in 1983, Barbara and Tom began the restoration and enlargement of the old Cagle House in South Pickens County in 1986. The Cagle House, built in 1871 by Tom’s great-grandfather, was placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 2002. Barbara was hostess of the Cagle House and over the years has welcomed guests from all over the US. As very active members of the Big Canoe Chapter of Friendship Force International, Mr. and Mrs. Eubanks were the hosts of more than 20 groups of Friend Force visitors from 15 countries from around the world. In 1994 the Eubanks were exchange directors for a unique FFI architectural exchange visit to St. Petersburg, Russia and Helsinki, Finland. In St. Petersburg, the chief architect of the Hermitage Museum was their host.
Since retirement, Mrs. Eubanks has continued her community involvement by volunteering at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center in Jasper. She also continued to share her extensive teaching skills by serving as an interim teacher in Cherokee and Pickens counties. Mrs. Eubanks loved teaching, traveling, family, church and community activities.
Barbara became a member of Zion Rest Church of Christ, Marietta, Ms. as a teenager. Moving to Marietta, Ga. she became a member of the Olive Street Church of Christ. Since coming to Pickens County, Barbara and Tom became active members of the Non-Denominational Chapel at Big Canoe.
Survivors include her husband, Tom Eubanks; sisters and brothers-in-law, Bobbie Huddleston, Evelyn Floyd, Martha Tyra, all of Booneville, Ms., Sarah and O’Neil Parker of Memphis, Tn. and Elizabeth and Charles Chisholm of Canton, Ms.; sister-in-law, Pam Floyd of Booneville; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Grady and Theresa Ireland and Ron and Brenda Eubanks, Marietta, Ga., Ron and Sharyn Bernecky of Smyrna, Mark and Sue Eubanks and Melvin and Betty McGill of Rome, Ga. Eight nieces, six nephews, 10 great-nieces, 11 great-nephews, one great-great-niece in the Floyd family and five nieces, four nephews, six great-nieces and four great-nephews in the Eubanks family. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary, and two brothers, Harrell and Kenneth Floyd.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 20 from the Big Canoe Chapel with Dr. Jim McCormick, Dr. Clay Stalnaker and Dr. Jimmy Allen officiating, followed by a luncheon in celebration of Barbara’s life in the adjacent Broyles Center. A graveside service and interment was at 4 in Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Tate, Ga. with Dr. Phill Ellington officiating. Pallbearers were: Wesley Taylor, Chris Forest, Austin Steine, Scott Mason, David Parker, Mike Huddleston, Clark and Rich Eubanks. Nathan Shipley
A memorial service for Nathan Shipley is scheduled for Saturday, May 29 at 7:30 p.m. It will be held at Jasper United Methodist Church in Jasper. A scholarship fund has been established in Nathan’s honor in lieu of flowers. Broomfield United Methodist Church will receive these tributes.
Imogene Gartrell
Mrs. Imogene Gartrell, age 101 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, May 23, 2004 at Mountainside Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman; son, James E. Gartrell; and two granddaughters, Jill McMurrian and Patty Gartrell.
Survivors include her daughter, Dot Cumbee, Ringgold, Ga; grandchildren, Winnie Holley, Jasper, Carol Turner, Newnan, Nancy Howze, Stockbridge, Lydia Hullendar, Ringgold, and Randy Cumbee, Rock Springs. Thirteen great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, May 25 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles O. Walker officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Randy and C.J. Cumbee, Jack Richards, Brad and Todd Turner, Tom Holley, David McMurrian and Jim Hullendar.
Robert Downes
Mr. Robert Downes, age 85 of Jasper, passed away Monday, May 19, 2003 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Downes, Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Robbie and Kim Downes, Marble Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Walt Johnson, Linda and Paul Collins and Becky and Harold Johnson, all of Jasper; sister, Florence Sweet, San Antonio, Tx. Fourteen grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, May 22 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Chaplain David LeGrand and the Rev. Carl Owenby officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Paul and Billy Peterson, Daniel and David Dean, Shane and Tony Hollifield, Cary M. and Neil Matney.
Paul Duke Jr.
Paul Anderson Duke Jr., age 50 of Ball Ground, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2003 of leukemia at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Atlanta. Mr. Duke grew up in Atlanta. He attended the Westminster School and was a graduate of Episcopal High in Virginia. He attended the University of Chicago, Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley. Paul Duke was an aide to Senator Herman Talmadge serving in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. He led an adventurous youth achieving the distinction of Eagle Scout and living as a volunteer in service on a kibbutz in Israel in the early ‘70s. He trekked throughout Central Asia before returning from Kabul, Afghanistan to study at the L’abri Institute in Switzerland. In 1978 Mr. Duke returned permanently to Georgia where he was involved in real estate investments and retail tool sales. He owned a retail store in Gainesville and horse farm in Pickens County which he operated until his health failed.
Survivors include his parents, Jean and Paul Duke of Atlanta; sisters, Linda Duke Pierce and Laura Duke Tison, both of Atlanta, and Ginger Duke of Mettairie, La.; and brother, Fraser Duke of Atlanta.
The funeral service will be graveside Wednesday, May 28 at 3 p.m. at Westview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home, 760 Pollard Blvd., SW, Atlanta, Ga. 30315.
Clent Silver
Mr. Clent Silver, age 73 of Jasper, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2003 at Atlanta Medical Center.
Survivors include his son, Randall Silver, Ariton, Al.; daughter, Marlene Gibson, Ellijay; brothers, Charles Silver, Sun City, Az., and Sam Silver, Ochlocknee, Ga.; sisters, Audrey Crump, Goldavee Davis, Elsie Cox and Ruby Dean, all of Jasper; and very special friend, Tee Clark, Jasper.
The funeral service was held Saturday, April 26 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Wallace Parks officiating. Interment followed in Ball Creek Baptist Church with Tracy and Tim Clark, Chuck Silver, Phillip Clark, Max Frady and Steve Brock serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were: Mike Silver, Emmett Godfrey, John Reynolds, Don Page, Jim Stancil, Kenny Collett and Alex McArthur.
Charles Silver
Mr. Charles M. Silver was born in Talking Rock, Ga. in September 1928. He moved to Arizona in 1994. He passed away at the Sun Health Hospice in Sun City West, Az. on August 27, 2004 with his wife and step-daughter by
his side. Mr. Silver attended school through the 7th grade, at which point the available schooling ended. He worked in the area until he was eligible to enlist in the US Marine Corps in 1950.
During his 21 years of service to this country, Mr. Silver was in the Inchon landing followed by the Chosin Reservoir Campaign of the Korean Conflict, touted to be one of the most severe battles engaged by the US
Military. He served as commander of the detachment in Cubi Point at Subic Bay in the Philippines. He was on the Med Cruise. He later served as advisor to the Royal Thai Marines. Mr. Silver served two tours in Vietnam. In
all, he was awarded 11 battle stars. Mr. Silver served two tours as a senior drill instructor, one each at Parris Island and San Diego. When Mr. Silver retired from the Marines, he attended college for police science and law. He became manager of security at the Coca-Cola Company until his retirement there. Mr. Silver is survived by his loving wife, Judith; his step-daughter, Linda Delles of Arizona; his three children, Charlene Blanke, Karen Silver and Charles M. Silver II of Georgia. He is also survived by his four sisters, Audrey Crump, Elsie Cox, Goldavee Davis and Ruby Dean; and by his brother, Sam Silvers, all of Georgia. Mr. Silver requested that no memorial service be held. Instead, he requested a wake. The wake will be held at his home in Arizona on Oct. 3, 2004 in accordance with his wishes. He requested that a donation in lieu of flowers be made to either the Marine Corps Drill Instructor¹s Association, 4085 Pacific Hwy., San Diego, Ca. 92110 or the Sun Health Hospice, 19702 N Routzahn Way, Sun City West, Az. 85375.
James Parker
Mr. James “Jim” Weldon Parker, age 65 of Jasper, passed away May 3, 2003 at Northside-Cherokee Hospital in Canton. He worked for Lockheed for 15 years. He also worked for NASA on Atlas for Missile Tracking System in Australia.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ruth Parker of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Sheree Parker of Woodstock; brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Margaret Parker of Jasper; grandchild, Tim Thomas of Decatur, Mi.; great-grandchildren, Christopher Hoganof Marietta, Sloan Parker of Woodstock;niece, Delene Parker of Marietta; nephew, Billy and Knoxie Parker of Woodstock; aunts, Lucy Parker of Jasper and Jessie Parker of Tennessee.
The funeral service was held Monday, May 5 at 10 a.m. from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the interment following in the Refuge Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Fred Bates and Larry Johnson officiating. The following served as pallbearers: Tommy Holley, Bobby Mullinax, John Lyons, Tim Thomas, Danny Wright and Guy Chapman.
Martha Stuart
Mrs. Martha Elizabeth Thomason Stuart, age 78 of Jasper, passed away May 3, 2003 at her residence in Jasper.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Gerald Allen of Jasper; stepson, David Stuart of Jasper; step-daughters, Carrie Goss of McCaysville, Suzie Reeves of Newnan and Nickie Collins of Chattanooga, Tn.; grandchildren, Greg and Jeannie Allen and Lisa and Dwight Barnett, all of Jasper. Four great-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, May 6 at 10 a.m. from Jasper First Baptist Church with interment in the Roosevelt Memorial Church Cemetery in Pine Mountain Valley, Ga. at 4 p.m. with the Revs. Charlie Boggan and Charles O. Walker officiating. The following served as pallbearers: Gene Mathews, Sonny Anderson, Blake Brooks, Von Hinton, John Forest and Craig McKenzie. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
George Raynes
Mr. George Raynes, age 77 of Tate, passed away May 29, 2004 at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Raynes, Tate; daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Wayne Mulkey, Dawsonville, Brenda and Kevin Williams and Jimmie Raynes, Tate, and Janice and Danny Costlow, Hinton; sisters, Lucille Forrest and Thelma James, both of Jasper, Dorothy Yates, Florida, Bonnie Haley, Canton, and Annie Peeler, Tennessee. Ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 31 in the Free Hope Baptist Church with the Revs. Donald Haley and Robert Allen officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Jerry Wofford, Randy, Dwayne and Steve Mulkey, Brandon Raynes, Michael Taylor, Marvin Moore and Brian Costlow. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Martha Appleberry
Mrs. Martha Sue Appleberry, age 63 of Calhoun, Ga., passed away Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Gordon Hospital following several months of declining health.
Mrs. Appleberry was born Sept. 11, 1940 in Pickens County, Ga., daughter of the late Clifford and Christine Tate Cowart. During her lifetime, she was employed as a bookkeeper/tax preparer. Mrs. Appleberry was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Ranger.
Survivors include her daughter, Patsy (Anna) Bailey of Calhoun; sons and daughter-in-law, Larry and Helen Bailey and William Gene Raynes, all of Calhoun; sister, Mae Parker, Calhoun; grandchildren, Tiffany Hooper, Teesha Evans and John Lee; five great-grandchildren, Kayla Tessey and Carley Hooper, Whitney McBee and Oakley Taylor. Niece, Diane Quintana, and nephew, Terry Parker, also survive.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 2 at 2 p.m. from the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Causby and Pastor Rusty Haradon officiating. Interment will follow in Chandler Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: Ed Quintana, Terry, Corey, Jeremy and Roy Parker.
Stanley King
Mr. Stanley King, age 49 of Jasper, formerly of Cherokee County, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004. He was a carpenter
Survivors include his sons, Scotty King of Indiana, Colt and Kurk King, both of Jasper; brothers, Jeff and Shane King, both of Ellijay, Van, Stacey, Dean and Franklin King, all of Jasper, Roger King, Alabama, Dwight King, Clayton, and James King, Canton; sisters, Annette and Karon King, both of Jasper. One grandchild also survives.
