Edward McHale, Sr.
Mr. Edward Earl McHale, Sr., age 68 of Darien, Ga., passed away Saturday, May 29, 2004 at his residence. Anative of Atlanta, he made his home in Darien for the past 28 years. He was an independent trucker and a member of Costal Worship Center.
Surviving are his wife, Anne DeLoach McHale, Darien; daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry and Michael Major, Gainesville, Fl., and Pamela and Bryan Klosat, St. Mary’s, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Rhonda McHale, Talking Rock. Nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1 from Costal Worship Center with the Revs. Bill Ligon and Lee Brandt officiating. Interment was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 2 at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper with the Rev. Bob Self officiating. Pallbearers were: Ronald Shaw, Kirk Quinton, Timothy Bryans, Jason Back, Daniel Hickey and John Polley. Honorary pallbearers were Donna and Butch Ginn and Stephanie and Levy Rentz. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Pkwy., Brunswick, Ga. 31525. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Bernice Payne
Mrs. Bernice Payne, age 56 of Jasper, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2004 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include her mother, Neoma Moss Herndon, Calhoun; son, Mitchell Payne, Jasper; daughters, Stacey and Tammy Payne, both of Jasper; brothers, Danny Herndon, Ranger, Robert Herndon, Calhoun, Hoyle Herndon, Jasper, and Edward Herndon, Ellijay; sisters, Edna Satterfield, Ellijay, Linda Mabry, Canton, Bennie Bell and Shirley Kirby, both of Calhoun. Five grandchildren also survive, Stephen, Cody, Caitlyn, Devan and Dylan Payne.
The funeral service was held Saturday, May 29 at 2 p.m. from the Town Creek Baptist Church with Pastor David Herring, the Rev. Lonnie Wright and J.B. Kirby officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Danny Holden, Nicholas Hawkins, Bobby Coker, Danny Wilson, Doug Eaton, Bryan and Chris Coker and Jimmy Daily. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Emory Rogers
Mr. Emory Rogers, age 49 of Ranger, Ga., passed away Sunday, May 30, 2004 at Gordon Hospital following a heart attack.
Mr. Rogers was born Feb. 25, 1955 in Gordon County, son of the late Randolph and Clara Mae Stone Rogers. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Canaan Rogers. Mr. Rogers was a lifelong resident of Gordon County where he loved to fish, garden and being with his grandchildren. He was an employee of Mannington Carpets where he was a hyster driver in the shipping department for the past 31 years.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Broome Rogers of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Steve Jackson of Ranger; son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Michelle Rogers of Ranger; grandchildren, Jalan Rogers, Clarrissa, Hannah and Tyler Jackson; sisters, Susan Parker of Ranger and Wanda of Arizona; brothers, Edward, Evertte and Eddie Rogers, all of Ranger, Johnny Rogers of Resaca,Artrell Rogers of Sonoraville Community and Billy Rogers of Alabama. Aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday at 3 p.m. from Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Brannon officiating. Singing was arranged by Myra Ingle and Tim Chastain. Pallbearers were: Glenn and Chris Stone, Ricky Brookshire, Rodney and Chad Kelly and Ryan Parker. Interment followed in Haven of Rest Memorial Park Cemetery.
Daisy Ponders
Mrs. Daisy E. Bennett Ponders, age 91 of Dalton, Ga., departed this life Monday morning, May 24, 2004 at Ridgwood Manor Health Care Center.
Mrs. Ponders was born Oct. 7, 1912 in Pickens County, daughter of the late Thomas and Sarah Frances (Holmes) Jones. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Johnny Esker Bennett;her second husband, Virgil A. Ponders; son, Glenn Bennett; and grandson, Roy Bennett. She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Gilmer County and attended the Dalton Church of God.
Survivors include her step-son, Mack and Donna Ponders of Dallas, Tx.; step-daughter, Fannie Bell Priest of Talking Rock; daughter-in-law, Jean Bennett of Dalton; grandchildren, Donna and Tommy Taylor and Carolyn Bennett, all of Dalton, and Debbie and Terry Callahan of Chatsworth; great-grandchildren, Michael and Sherri Bennett, Shane, Brenda, Chris and Anthony Calhoun and Ashley Callahan. A number of great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, May 26 at 2 p.m. from Melrose Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home with Rev. Wallace Parks officiating. Interment followed in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Pickens.
Roy Bennett
Mr. Roy Glenn Bennett, age 53 of Dalton, departed this life Saturday afternoon, May 15, 2004.
Roy was born March 6, 1951 in Pickens County, Ga. He was employed at Rosedale Transport as a truck driver and was a member of the Valley Brook Church of God. He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Glenn Bennett. Roy loved his family and friends, and his grandchildren were the light of his life.
Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Carolyn (Akins) Bennett of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Michael Roy and Sherri Bennett; grandchildren, Justin, Jadyn and Jenna Bennett; mother, Jean (Carver) Bennett, all of Dalton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Debbie and Terry Callahan of Chatsworth and Donna and Tommy Taylor of Dalton; grandmother, Estelle Ponder of Dalton; mother- and father-in-law, Katheryn and Bill Kirby of Chattanooga, Tn. Several nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.
The service to celebrate the life of Roy Bennett was held Tuesday, May 18 at 2 p.m. from the Melrose Chapel of Ponders Funeral Home with his pastor, Rev. Chester Edwards officiating. Interment followed in the United Memorial Gardens. His nephews served as pallbearers: Chris, Anthony and Shane Calhoun, Anthony and Bryan Sanford and Jason McFalls.
Kenneth Clark
Kenneth Clark, age 60 of Canton, passed away May 23, 2004 at Northside Hospital Cherokee. He was owner of Ken’s Advertising and a member of Arbor Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his father, Cleve Clark of Canton; daughter, Amy Clark of Canton; sister, Shelba Hales of Jasper; and niece and nephew, Kim Ivy and Keith Hales.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, May 26 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Huey Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Terry Caylor and Bobby Padgett officiating. Interment was in Macedonia Memorial Park.
Lewis Wright, Sr.
Mr. Lewis O. Wright, Sr., age 72 of Talking Rock, passed away Friday, June 4, 2004 at his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Jo Ann Wright, Talking Rock; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lou O., Jr. and Terry Wright, Florida, and Robert and Joyce Wright, Tate; step-children, Shannon and Joe McDonald and Rebecca James; grandchildren, Katie McDonald, Dustin, Elissa and Dylan James.
No memorial service was held. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Shirley Palmer
Mrs. Shirley Palmer, age 64 of Talking Rock, passed away Monday, May 31, 2004 at Northside Hospital in Atlanta.
Survivors include her mother, Nellie Solomon, Talking Rock; son and daughter-in-law, Charles Jeffery and Lynn Palmer, Jasper; daughter and son-in-law, Elisa and Byron Long, Fairmount; brother, David Solomon, Talking Rock; and three grandchildren, Dylan Long and Brianna and Emma Palmer.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, June 2 from Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Kelley officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Keith and Kevin Solomon, Steve, Mark and Coy Lowe and Wayne Abernathy. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Lois Hamrick
Mrs. Lois J. Hamrick, age 82 of the Hill City Community, passed away June 3, 2004 at her residence.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Terrell Cash, Linda and Ralph Harper and Wanda and Greg Mullins; grandchildren, April Roberts, Robert Davis, Tonya Bowen and Natasha Flowers; step-grandchildren, Greg, Brian and Jeffery Cash, Kelly Harper, Justin and Joseph Mullins; great-grandchildren, Sierra Bowen and Riley Davis; step-great-grandchildren, Dalton, Jordan and Macy Cash; sister, Myrtle Pilcher; sisters-in-law, Loreen Gee and Agnes Searcy. A number of adopted grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday, June 6 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. LarryKelley officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Robert Davis, David Roberts, Jed Bowen, T.J. Flowers, Mark Faber and Greg Cash.
Ruth Black
Mrs. Ruth Thomson Black, age 83 of Austell (formerly of Jasper), passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2004.
Mrs. Black was a retired school teacher. She was a member of South Minister Presbyterian Church and a charter member of New Lebanon Presbyterian Church where she was an elder and played the organ for over 25 years.
Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Garofalo of Buford and Mary Kirkland of Lawrenceville; sister, Nancy McGill of Jasper; and four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
The funeral service was held Friday at 11 a.m. from the Presbyterian Village with the Revs. Debbie Wells, Bob Pooley and Richard Datton officiating. The scattering of the remains was at 3 p.m. at New Lebanon Presbyterian Church in Jasper. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Caring Hands Fund, Presbyterian Village, 2000 East-West Connector, Austell, Ga. 30106. Davis-Struempf Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Phyllis Murray
Ms. Phyllis Murray of Jasper passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2004 in Roswell.
Survivors include Kenneth Bledsoe, Jasper; and daughter, Kathy Murray, Minnesota. Other survivors are Deborah Lowery, David Bledsoe, Kay Curry and Saren Lightsong.
A memorial service was held Sunday, June 6 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Hoyt Jenkins officiating. Those who desire may make donations to Pickens Animal Rescue, PO Box 45, Jasper, Ga. 30143.
Shirley Henson
Mrs. Shirley Henson, age 66 of Calhoun, passed away Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at Calhoun Health Care Center.
Mrs. Henson was born Sept. 13, 1937 in Ball Ground, the daughter of the late Thomas Glynn Teems and Ruth Gennett McCrae. She was a nurse’s aid at Mountainside in Pickens County until becoming disabled. She was preceded in death by a son, Tarol Bruce; and a daughter, Glenda Henson.
Survivors include her mother, Ruth McCrae Spell of Soddy Daisy, Tn.; sons, Johnny Henson of Cleveland, Tn., Toby and Richard Henson, both of Calhoun; daughters, Betty Henson and Nina Parker, both of Calhoun, Carolyn Teague of Jasper and Mary Henson of Dalton; sister, Carol Patterson of Soddy Daisy. Thirteen grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and nieces also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, June 4 at 11 a.m. from Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of the Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home with Lamar Patton officiating. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery in Ball Ground. Pallbearers were: Jason Evans, Andy and Robbie Buchanan, Shane Henson, Chris Chaney and Jamie Evans. Honorary pallbearers were Roger Teague and Gary Parker.
Robert Vernon Christian
Robert Vernon (Bob) Christian, 77 of Roanoke, died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at South Roanoke Nursing Home after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife, the former Sandra Johns of Roanoke, Va.; his daughter, Beth Christian Cooke (Donald) of Springfield, Va; and his brother, Carl C. Christian of Dacula, Ga. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Jonathan Francis Cooke and Jordan Elizabeth Cooke, both of Springfield, Va, as well as two nieces and a nephew.
Bob Christian was born August 23, 1925 in Tate, Ga. He was the valedictorian of Tate High School’s class of 1942. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was graduated from the University of Georgia’s Grady School of Journalism, where he was a Varsity letterman.
His career highlights include writing sports for the now Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, working in Public Relations for Delta Airlines, Lockheed Corporation and Eastern Airlines, where he was vice president. In a column published in the June 2, 2003 Atlanta Journal and Constitution, Furman Bisher eulogized Christian as “a reporter, and a good one. Dogged, unrelenting and never one to back off when the issue heated up.”
He was a member of many professional and service organizations, including the Blue Key Honor Society and Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club. His career was marked by many awards, including the Public Relations Trophy from the Aviation Space Writers Association.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to The Grady School of Journalism, University of Georgia, Athens, Ga. 30602. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Velma Higgins
Mrs. Velma Lowe Higgins, age 92 of Talking Rock, passed away June 4, 2003 at the Wesley Woods Center in Decatur. She was a member of the Talking Rock First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Brenda Higgins, Talking Rock; four grandchildren, Jody and Jeff Higgins, Lisa Hall and Julie Murdock. Four great-grandchildren, three sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Kelly officiating. Interment followed in Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Scott, Jeff and Jody Higgins, Steve Hall, Todd Payne and Chuck Murdock.
Kieser Emory
Infant Kieser Hagan Emory passed away Thursday, June 5, 2003 at the Egleston’s Childrens Hospital in Atlanta.
Kieser is survived by his parents, Chad and Tonya Emory of Talking Rock; sister, Danielle Moss of Talking Rock; grandparents, Billy Parks of Ellijay, Pauline Howell of Jasper, Brenda Emory of Talking Rock and Johnny Emory of Jasper; great-grandparents, Ruth Burgess, Brian and Dale Emory, all of Jasper, and Ami Parks of Ellijay; uncles, Chase Emory of Talking Rock, Dylan Emory of Jasper, Josh Parks of Blairsville, Jessie Parks and A.J. Parks, both of Florida.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 7 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Kelly officiating. Interment followed in Refuge Baptist Church Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Jeff Hall and Wayne Cooley.
Orris McCowan
Mrs. Orris McCowan, age 77 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2003 at her residence. She was born Oct. 23, 1925 to James and Bunace Farrow, who preceded her in death. Her faithful and loving husband, Johnny McCowan, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her brothers and sisters-in-law, Vonce and Jane Farrow of Jasper, Blufus and Jane B. Farrow of Marietta; sister and brother-in-law, Belle and Clifford Green of Woodstock. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, June 10 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Leo Hampton officiating. Interment followed at Sunrise Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Jasper. Pallbearers were: Robert McClure, Gary Benson, Greg Hampton, Fred Anderson, Sam Freeman and Benny Green.
