Rev. Emmett Moore, Jr.
The Rev. Emmett J. Moore Jr., a Tate native, died April 22, 2003 at Ohio State University Hospital after an extended illness.
The Rev. Moore, 77 years old at the time of his death, was praised as a “spiritual giant.” He had served as the pastor of Seventh Avenue Community Baptist Church in Columbus, Ohiofor more than 28 years at the time of his death.
Moore was born in Tate. His family worked at the Georgia Marble Company there. Moore graduated from Tate High School and later worked at North Georgia College in Dahlonega before joining the army.
After serving in the army, Moore moved to Columbus where his relatives along with other members of the Tate Community had previously moved to find work following a slowdown in the local economy.
In Ohio, Moore was active in the Eastern Union Missionary Baptist Association as a chief training agent for ministers. He was known as having a good rapport with the students. Moore was also active with the Columbus Baptist Pastors Conference and the Baptist Ministerial Alliance of Columbus and Central Ohio.
Moore was ordained to Deaconship and ministry on Easter Sunday in 1974.
A eulogy in the Columbus Post at the time of his death stated, “The spiritual giant Pastor Emmett Moore Jr. has fallen. He cast a long and gigantic shadow over 28 years of service. He made an exceeding and enduring loud noise.”
The Rev. Moore attended Moody Bible College. He was employed at Buckeye Steel Casting Company and Keever Starch Company before he retired.
He is preceded in death by former wife, Roline (Battle) Moore; his parents, Emmett and Eliza (Dean) Moore; sisters, Lille Gooden and Rosa Langston; and niece, Brenda Gooden.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Thelma B. Moore; mother-in-law, Luessie Burks; step-son, Reginald Fall; God-daughter, Phyllis Madrey; special sister-in-law, Ocie Battle; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dorothy Crowe
Dorothy Crowe, age 59 of Canton, passed away June 11, 2003 at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, James Crowe of Canton; daughters, Rhonda Barnes and Lisa Flowers, both of Canton; sister, Thelma J. Prince of Woodstock; half-sisters, Estelle Walker of Ball Ground and Ethel Cantey and Lois Dodson, both of Woodstock. Two grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, June 13 at 2 p.m. from the Huey Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Grover Thrasher and Floyd Ellis officiating. Interment was in Macedonia Memorial Park.
Rebekah Holcomb
Mrs. Rebekah Haygood Holcomb, age 67 of Tate, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2003 at Mountain Health Care Nursing Center in Jasper.
Mrs. Holcomb was a graduate of Athens High School and the University of Georgia. She was a member of Dunwoody Baptist Church where she served as director of the kindergarten for many years. She was the daughter of the late O.W. and Rebekah Guy Haygood of Athens. She was preceded in death by her sister, Susie Mahoney.
Survivors include her husband, Roy G. Holcomb Sr., Tate; sons and daughter-in-law, Roy G. Holcomb Jr., Acworth and Williford and Wendy Holcomb, Loganville; two grandsons, Christopher and Andrew Holcomb, Loganville; brother-in-law, Ronald Mahoney, Chatsworth. Two nieces also survive.
Graveside services were held Friday, June 13 at 11 a.m. in the Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Von Hinton officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Eugene Boron
Mr. Eugene Bruce Boron, age 65 of Big Canoe, passed away Thursday, June 12, 2003 as a result of an automobile accident. He was a retired teacher of Ohio for 29 years.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Boron of Big Canoe; sons, David and Bryan Boron, both of Atlanta; daughter, Jill Edgecombe of Atlanta. Two grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service was held Monday, June 16 from the Big Canoe Chapel with the Rev. George Callahan officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Georgia Mountains Tres Dias. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Edward Lacey Sr.
Mr. Edward Davis Lacey Sr., age 88, a well-known business and civic leader of Gordon County, passed away Friday, June 13, 2003 at Redmond Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Lacey was born in Fairmount on June 30, 1914, son of the late Henry Davis and Rose Pearl Edwards Lacey. He was founder of Ed Lacey Mills and Fairmount Telephone Co. and after his retirement he remained very active in civic and community events. Mr. Lacey received his formal education from Fairmount High School, North West Georgia Jr. College, University of Georgia and the MemphisCotton Buying School. He was an ordained Deacon, served many years as a Bible Study teacher at Fairmount First Baptist Church and he was an active layman in the community. He often reflected his calling was as a divine imperative to employ his blessings in ways that would materially exhort and improve his community. At the time of his death he was a member of Calhoun Baptist Church. He was a member of Masonic Order, Scottish Rite, Yaarab Temple; Echota Vann Shrine Club; Calhoun Elks Club Charter member; Lions Club; Georgia Municipal Association and Gordon County Historical Society; and a veteran of the US Army.
Mr. Lacey was elected to serve as mayor of Fairmount and was very instrumental in bringing about city-supplied water and paved streets for his beloved Fairmount. He was the recipient of many honors. Mr. Lacey was appointed by Gov. Carl Sanders as Lt. Colonel Aide DeCamp of the Governor’s staff and was past president of the Tufted Textile Manufacturer’s Association as well as having served as an incorporator and director of numerous religious, commercial and civic enterprises.
He was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, James A., Noel Eugene and Gober Lacey and Ruby Butler.
Surviving him is his wife, Alma Lois Chambers Lacey of Calhoun; sons, Edward Davis Lacey Jr. of Summerville, Ga. and Noel Kelly Lacey of Fairmount; daughter, Bobbie Jean Sheena Edge of Calhoun; sister, Thelma Linkingfelter of Alcoa, Tn. Nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held Monday, June 16 at 11 a.m. from Calhoun First Baptist Church with Dr. Bert Vaughn and Rev. Davis Lacey officiating. Interment was in Chandler Cemetery. Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
John T. Jones
Mr. John Thomas (Tommy) Jones, age 69 of Jasper, passed away Friday, June 13, 2003 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Marla Jones, Jasper; mother, Thelma L. Jones, Talking Rock; sons, Michael Jones, McDonough, Ga., Stan Hitson, Bethlehem, Ga., Rob Geiger, Durham, N.C., and Erik Perrine, Thomaston, Ga.; four daughters, Angela DuBose, Newnan, Barbara England, Jackson Lake, Ga., Rhonda Davis and Elizabeth Perrine, both of Jasper; brothers, William Jones, Woodstock, Bobby Jones, Ellijay, Jerry and David Jones, both of Talking Rock; sisters, Ruby Smith, Dorothy Duncan and Juanita Jones, all of Talking Rock, and Nancy Voelker, Ellijay. Nine grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, June 16 at 2 p.m. from the New Lebanon Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Mike Allen, David Fahner and David Jones officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Serving as pallbearers were: Michael, Billy, Bobby and Jerry Jones, Roger Davis, Bruce England and Stan Hitson. Honorary pallbearers were Charles DuBose and Erik Perrine. The family did accept flowers or donations may be made to Georgia Mountains Hospice. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Thomas Crumbley
Mr. Thomas M. Crumbley, age 56, passed away at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta on Saturday, June 14, 2003.
Mr. Crumbley was born in Atlanta to Carolyn and George Crumbley on Feb. 22, 1947. He was a graduate of Briarcliff High School and attended Georgia State University where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. Following his service in the US Army, he joined Crumbley & Associates, Inc., advertising and public relations agency, where he served as vice president and business manager until his early retirement in 1985. Also from 1968 through 1985 he served as a volunteer business manager of the Peach Bowl, Inc. (now Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl).
In the late 1980s he moved to Jasper where he became a volunteer firefighter in the Grandview Volunteer Fire Department. At his death he was assistant chief of the fire department. He has been a member of the Atlanta Lions Club for more than 25 years.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his son, Josh P. Crumbley of St. Simmons Island, Ga.; sister, Cheryl Lee and husband Dan of Atlanta; aunt, Evelyn Fortson and husband Charles of Seminole, Fl.; niece, Stephanie Comtois and husband Pauly of Atlanta; great aunt, Foy Lou Pinkard of Palm Springs, Fl. Many cousins and loved ones also survive.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Monday, June 16. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grandview Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 939, Jasper, Ga. 30143. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Scott Fitts
Scott K. Fitts, age 85 of Chattanooga, Tn., passed away Friday, June 13, 2003.
Scott was born in Cherokee County and has been a resident of Chattanooga for the past 36 years. He was a retired boilermaker from Flame Refractories and a member of Lake Hills Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Opaline O. Fitts; daughter, Alice and husband Jon Browning of New Providence, N.J. One nephew and three nieces also survive.
The funeral service was held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday from the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Minister James Long officiating. Burial was in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
Rosalee Woody
Rosalee Woody, age 92 of Dawsonville, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at North Fulton Regional Hospital from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Mrs. Woody was born in Hall County and until five years ago was a resident of Fairmount. She was employed for over 35 years at Lacey Manufacturing in Fairmount and was a member of Ryo Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, H.J. Woody; son, James H. Woody; and daughter, Judy Macaulay.
Survivors include her daughter, Betty Johnson of Rome, Ga.; sons, Jack Jerome Woody of Fairmount and Charles Edward Woody of Forsyth; sister, Louise Boling of Calhoun. Sixteen grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter and a number of other relatives also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, May 31 at 11 a.m. from Bearden Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Smith officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper.
Sydney Hinson
Sydney Lanae Hinson, 11 weeks old of Canton, passed away May 28, 2003 at Northside Hospital, Atlanta.
Survivors include her parents, Daniel Hinson of Ball Ground and Kara Mathews of Canton; grandparents, Tommy and Kathy Mathews of Canton and Kathy and Mike Tarkington of Ball Ground; great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.W. Childers of Canton and Bobby James of Hohenwald, Tn.; and great-great-grandparents, Myrtle Weavers of Canton. Aunt and uncles also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, May 31 at 2 p.m. from Huey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Greg Foster officiating. Interment was in Hopewell Baptist Church Cemetery.
William Stewart
Mr. William Stewart, age 79 of Jasper, passed away May 27, 2003.
Survivors include sons, Scott Stewart of Jasper and Kent Stewart of Woodstock; and daughter, Cheri Still of Doraville. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive.
A private family service was held.
Jeddy Elkins
Mr. Jeddy Marvin Elkins, age 77 of Duluth, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2003 at Peachtree Christian Hospice. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Duluth, a devoted husband, brother, father and grandfather, as well as a loyal and trusted friend.
Born in Fitzgerald, Ga. on June 3, 1925 to Mr. and Mrs. George Leon Elkins, he was reared in Macon and later lived in Columbia, S.C. before entering the US Navy during World War II where he served for two and a half years in the Pacific Fleet. He was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration for 42 years. He served at the Atlanta Airport tower and the Hampton Regional Control Center.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vivian Griffeth Elkins; daughter, Cathy Elkins, Dallas, Tx.; daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Jeff Haas, Duluth; granddaughter, Carrie Vaughn, Duluth; sister, Mary Chastain, Macon; sisters-in-law, Eloise Elkins, Columbia, S.C., Jane Griffeth, Tate; brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Jackie Griffith, Marietta. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 27 from the First Baptist Church of Duluth with Dr. Dave Parker officiating. Graveside services were held in Tate, Ga. at 3 p.m. at the Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Von Hinton officiating. Pallbearers were: Tom Baines, Ted Bryant, Bill Cagle, Curtis Christian, Donal Dorsey, Bill and Frank Eubanks, Roy Holcomb, Harold Nelson and Mike Sweigart. Memorial gifts may be made to the First Baptist Church of Duluth or to Peachtree Christian Hospice, also of Duluth.
Sgt. Kelly Strubing
Sergeant Kelly D. Cooper Strubing, age 30, formerly of Jasper, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2003. She graduated from PHS in 1992. On July 9, 1992 she entered the US Army where she attended Basic Individual Training at Fort Leonard, Mo. and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Sam Houston, Tx. where she became a dental assistant.
Sergeant Strubing served in a multitude of assignments ranging from overseas assignments such as the 423rd Dental Co. (Dental Services) in Geibelstadt, Germany to Korea where she was assigned to the 618th Medical Co. (Dental Services) in both Camp Edwards and Camp Greaves. In addition, her stateside assignments included tours in the 66th Medical Detachment (Dental Services) as well as the Dental Activity at Fort Stewart, Ga., culminating with her last assignment at Bernheim Dental Clinic with the Dental Activity in Fort Benning, Ga. Within these assignments, Sgt. Strubing held several positions to include dental assisting, training NCO, Personal Administration Center NCO, dental hygienist, assistant noncommissioned officer-in-charge and noncommissioned officer-in-charge.
Her military awards and decorations included the ArmyCommendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Good Conduct Medal (3rd award), National Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon with the number two and the Army Service Ribbon. Sgt. Strubing’s military education included Advanced Individual Training for Dental Assisting, the Dental Hygiene course, the Primary Leadership Development Course and the Standard Army Training System’s course. She also attained numerous college credits with the University of Texas, the University of Maryland and Thomas Edison College.
She is survived by her mother, Vanessa Wigington Cooper, Ellijay; daughter, Emily Strubing, Columbus; brother, Chris Cooper, Ellijay; sister, Shella Cooper Webster, Alaska. Aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 31 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Revs. Moss Fountain, Joey Dubois and Terry Dean officiating. Interment followed in Lake Forest Memorial Park with full military honors.
Katherine York
Mrs. Katherine Ann York, age 70 of Jasper, formerly of West Virginia, passed away Friday unexpectedly at her home.
She is survived by daughters, Jennifer Ashby, Canton, Michelle Tanaka, Morgan Town, Va., and Cindy Scott, Carmel, In. Seven grandchildren also survive.

Shelba Wood
Mrs. Shelba Wood, age 62 of Ball Ground, passed away May 30, 2003 at Hospice of Atlanta.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Wood, Ball Ground; mother, Virginia Childers, Nelson; son, Robb Wood, Ball Ground; daughter, Tammy Cash, Ball Ground; brother, Larry Childers, Nelson.
The funeral service was held Sunday, June 1 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Alton Burrell officiating. Interment was in Cherokee Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers were: Stanley Cash, Mike Schneider, Wayne Childers, Jimmy Fitts, Jerry Broome and Mark Popham.
