Peggy Lewis
Mrs. Connie (Peggy) E. Lewis, age 80 of Jasper, passed away at her home on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 after fighting a lengthy illness.
Peggy was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary at Mountainside Medical Center, Marble Valley Historical Society, Sharptop Mountain Art Association, the Friendship Force, an avid bridge player, master woodworker and world traveler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Lewis.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Susan Lewis of Decatur, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Herman Bell of Talking Rock, and Janie Lewis and Bob Elk of Twisp, Wa.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Haradon and Shirley Dillon of Oakland, Ca., and David and Carol Dillon of Eureka, Ca.; grandchildren and their spouses, David and Renee, Matthew and Tara, Janna and Ronnie, Kirby and Skip, Zaphyr and Ira, Robert and Kelly, Autumn and Miguel; great-grandchildren, Megan, Alexis, Kelsy, Steven, Jasmine, Kati and Emma. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 28 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles O. Walker officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in her name to the Ladies Auxiliary of Mountainside Medical Center or the Marble Valley Historical Society.
Floyd Walker
Mr. Floyd David Walker, age 83 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2004 at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Walker; son, Jerry Walker; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Jackie Bannister; and sister, Bessie Boling, all of Jasper.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, August 10 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with interment in Refuge Baptist Church Cemetery. The Revs. Larry Johnson, Jerry Weaver, Carter Payne and David LeGrand officiated. The following served as pallbearers: Danny, Thomas and Gary Prather, Lamar, Randy, Gary and Pete Walker and Lyndsey Petty. Honorary pallbearers were Tim and Willie Prather.
Julia Kopp
Ms. Julia Lee Kopp, age 73 of Talking Rock, passed away Saturday evening at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Rusty Puckett of Sterling, Alaska; sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty Pitts of Monticello, Barbara and Steve Chance of Talking Rock and Mary Jane and Edward Gordon of Monticello; sister-in-law, Joyce James; grandchild, Jeremy Puckett of Alaska. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Kelley officiating. Interment will followed in Lake Forest Memorial Park.
Scott Williams
Mr. Scott Williams, age 43 of Lebanon, passed away Monday, August 11, 2003 at his residence. He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his mother, Louise Williams of Lebanon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry Williams of Lebanon, Allan and Bobbi Williams of Roswell and Nick and Andrea Williams of Marietta; sisters, Hope Williams of Woodstock, Suzie Rainwater of Ball Ground and Debbie Mixon of Douglasville.
The funeral service was scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 13 from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Rick Templeton officiating. Interment was in the Old Macedonia Cemetery in Bartow County.
Jim Boling
Mr. J.G. “Jim” Boling, dearly beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Wednesday, August 13, 2003.
Mr. Boling was a member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church and a member of Harold Byrd American Legion Post 66. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War, serving in the US Air Force. He retired in 1982 after 35 years of service with Southern Bell.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria Dilbeck Boling of Stone Mountain; daughter, Sandra Boling of New Orleans, La.; son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Dee Boling of New Orleans; brother and sister-in-law, Tom and Emyleen Boling of Suwanee; sister and brother-in-law, Blondine and Wallace Burrell of Decatur; grandson, Dylan Boling of New Orleans. Three nephews and one cousin also survives.
The funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 15 from the Chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons with the Revs. Wendell Phillips and Gary Christensen officiating. Interment followed in Melwood Cemetery.
Allen Smiley
Mr. Allen W. Smiley, age 67 of Jasper, passed away Sunday afternoon, August 17, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper.
Survivors include his daughters, Patricia and Erin Smiley, both of Marietta, and Kimberley Adkins, Perry, Ga.; sister, Linda Garrason, Vero Beach, Fl. Four grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, August 19 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials bemade to a local AA chapter of the donors choice.
Cameron Green
Mr. Cameron Stuart Green, age 20 of Gainesville, Ga., passed away July 19, 2003.
Mr. Green was born March 12, 1983 in Hall County. He worked the food service industry and served in the US Army. His grandparents, Leonard and Nellie Green, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his parents, Larry and Elaine Green, Gainesville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Caleb Green, Gainesville, Terence and Vickie Green, Texas, Chris and Diana Davis, Gainesville; sister and brother-in-law, Telema and Dewayne Castell, Canton; grandparents, J.L. and Agatha Edmondson, Ellijay; great-grandmother, Minnie Lou Beasley, Ellijay. One niece and five nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, August 14 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill McKinney officiating. Pallbearers were: Lennie, Wade, Wade Jr. and Gary Green, Tim Edmondson, Brian Byrd, Joey and Donald DeHart. Interment was in Yukon Cemetery with graveside rites by the North Georgia Honor Guard.
Johnny Burnett
Mr. Johnny A. Burnett, age 50 of Ellijay, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2003 following injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mr. Burnett was born Dec. 24, 1952 in Gilmer County, son of Marlin and the late Olga Bilobrowak Burnett. He was a member of the American Legion Post #82 where he served as chaplain for the past five years. He also held the offices of junior vice president and senior vice commander, and was employed in truck maintenance at Gold-Kist.
Survivors include his father, Marlin Burnett, Ellijay; sisters, Yvonne Ratcliffe, Canada, Lisa Burnett, Ellijay, Mary Walker and Kelly Burnett Spencer, both of Jasper, Natalie Rabie, Carrollton; brother, Marlin Burnett Jr., Ellijay. Three nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service was held Wednesday at 5 p.m. from the Chapel of Bernhardt Funeral Home with Dr. Charles O. Walker and Bro. James (Slugger) Strawbridge officiating. Military rites were by the North Georgia Honor Guard.

Bobby Poole
Mr. Bobby Glenn (“Bob”) Poole, age 72 of Jasper, Ga., passed away Saturday, August 23, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include two brothers, Charlie and Lanier Poole, both of Jasper; sisters, Lois Poole, Betty Ferrell, Hazel Mullinax, all of Jasper, and Cora Bell Chastain of Gainesville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Mr. Poole served in the Army in the early 1950s. Following his stint in the Army, Poole worked as a barber in Jasper.
Although he had no children, he was a much beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held Monday, August 25 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Eubanks officiating. Interment followed at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Jasper. Roper Funeral of Jasper was in charge of the arrangements.
Serving as pallbearers were Jody and Brian Poole, Charles Poole, Tim Poole, Mark Doty, Jimmy Allen and Dan Pool.
Hazel Blackwell
Mrs. Hazel Blackwell, age 62 of Nelson, passed away August 19, 2003 at her residence after an extended illness. She was a food service employee with the Pickens County School System.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Leroy Blackwell; son, Warren Singleton, Nelson; daughters, Wanda Clegg and Donna Golden, both of Ellijay, and Amy Duckett, Ball Ground; brothers, Jerry Roland, Buford, Leroy Roland, Marietta, Charles Roland, Nelson, and Gerald Roland, Ball Ground; sisters, Susie Spriggs and Kathy Edmondson, both of Canton.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 22 from Gospel Temple Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery with the Rev. Fred Ray officiating. Sosebee Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Lauren Brown
Miss Lauren Kathleen Brown, age 25 of Chapel Hill, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2003. She was born Sept. 22, 1977 in Athens, Ga. to Ray R. and Diane Hamby Brown.
Lauren was a dedicated and compassionate Christian who committed her life to helping others. She was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. She was a 1996 honor graduate of Forsyth County Day School and a 1999 graduate of the Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in Applied Biology with high honors. Ms. Brown currently was a third year student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine pursuing a career in Pediatrics. Her volunteer mission work included Sojourners in Houston, Tx., World Changes and St. Joseph’s Hospital’s Mercy Mobile Care, serving Atlanta’s homeless.
Survivors include her mother and father of Clemmons; maternal grandparents, Ray and Edna Hamby of Smyrna; paternal grandparents, Mrs. Rachel R. Brown and the late William Roy Brown of Thomaston, Ga.; uncles and aunts, Charles R. Hamby, wife Missy and son T.J. of Cumming, Roy C. Brown and wife Evelyn of Jonesboro, Marvin E. Brown and wife Sara Jean of Manchester, Martha Rollins and the late H.G. Rollins of Manchester.
The funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Monday, August 25 from Clemmons First Baptist Church by Dr. Robby Phillips. Burial followed in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to Clemmons First Baptist church, PO Box 279, Clemmons, N.C. 27012.
Eloise Holland
Mrs. Eloise Bonner Holland, age 89, passed away August 20, 2003. She was filledwith spirit and joy. She never stopped enjoying the simple pleasures of life and the family she loved.
Eloise shared her amazing gifts of generosity, strength and love with everyone she met. Those who knew her will have these gifts forever. She lived in Atlanta most of her life and survived her daughter, Barbara, son, Eddie, and her husband of 70 years, Berry.
Survivors include her four grandchildren, Julie Holland, Debbie Goodman, David McAdoo and Dena Malsom.
The funeral service was held Sunday, August 24 at 11 a.m. from Roper Funeral Home.
Beverly Bretherton
Beverly Maxine Meade Bretherton, beloved wife of surviving husband, William Martin Bretherton, passed away August 19, 2003 at the age of 72. She was raised in Drexel Hill, Pa., graduated from Southern Seminary High School and was her senior class president. She also attended Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, Va.
At the age of five, Beverly was honored to be the youngest camper at Camp Nioda in Newfoundland, N.J. She enjoyed teaching children and worked as a nursery school teacher for over 25 years at many private schools in Bryn Mawr and surrounding areas in Pennsylvania. Beverly enjoyed vacationing at Cape May, N.J., Smith Mountain Lake, Va. and Green Pond, N.J.
Beverly was an only child and is predeceased by her loving mother, Ethel Damm Meade, and her father, J. (Jack) Weldon Meade Jr. She was also very proud of her ancestors, Max Damm, her mother’s father, the inventor of the zipper for luggage, and was the great-grand-niece of General George Gordon Meade, Civil War general for the Union.
Six years ago she fell in love with Big Canoe, Ga. because of the people and the beautiful mountains. She loved being involved in many activities within the Big Canoe community including Ridgerunners, bridge club and Upstairs at the Swim Club Committee.
Survivors, in addition to her husband, include sons and daughters-in-law, William Martin Jr. and Barbara Harkins Bretherton of Atlanta and their two children, Robert Meade and Jarita Richardson Bretherton of Woodstock and his daughter, Fredrick George and Joyce DePanfilis Bretherton of Norwalk, Ct. and their three children and John Scott Bretherton and his two daughters.
A memorial service was held Monday, August 25 at 2 p.m. from Big Canoe Chapel. Contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 102454, Atlanta, Ga. 30368-2454 in Beverly’s honor. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Helen Guggino
Mrs. Helen Shirah Guggino, age 80 of Big Canoe, passed away Friday afternoon, August 22, 2003 at Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph G. Guggino, Big Canoe; son, Joseph A. Guggino Jr. and wife Annette, Pisgah Forest, N.C.; brother, Lamar Shirah, Camilla, Ga.; sister, Lucy Hasell, High Point, N.C.; three grandchildren, Mary, Angela and Michael also survive.
Entombment services were held Monday, August 25 at 11:30 a.m. at Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta with Dr. Jim McCormick officiating. Serving as pallbearers were: Sam Naff, Michael Guggino, Jim and Ray Shirah. A memorial service was held Tuesday, August 26 at 11:30 a.m. from Big Canoe Chapel with the Rev. Phill Ellington officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Daisy Tippens
Mrs. “Daisy” Ruth Tippens of Canton, age 73 of Canton, passed away on Thursday, August 7, 2003 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.
Mrs. Tippens was the owner/operator of Tippens Grocery Store in the Keithsburg Community of Cherokee County. She was a member of Chalcedonia Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Maxine Fountain of Jasper, Carlene Kincaid of Talking Rock and Yvonne Crowe of Canton; brother, Milford Lyon of Ball Ground; sisters, Mabelle Anderson of Macon and Patricia Fowler of Ball Ground. Seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survives.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 9 from Chalcedonia Baptist church with the Revs. James McGaha and Monroe Gunter officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Sosebee Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Jerome Cash
Mr. Jerome Cash, age 71 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, August 9, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Cash, Jasper; sons, Joe Holcomb, Canton, and Charles Blackwell, Swanee; daughters, Joyce Eaton, Canton, Mary Lou Chester, Dahlonega, Sheila Sutton and TeresaWalker, both of Tifton; brother, Bill Cash, Jonesboro; sisters, Joyce Kimbrell, Jasper, and Betty Floyd, Columbus. Fourteen grandchildren and several great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, August 12 at 11 a.m. from the Lake Forest Memorial Park with the Rev. Von Hinton officiating. Local Chapter #47 DAV was in charge of military graveside services. The family asked that flowers be omitted and that memorials be made to the local Chapter #47 of the Pickens DAV. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
