Johnny Wofford
Mr. Johnny Wofford, age 45 of Long Swamp Road in Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper.
Mr. Wofford is survived by his father, Elbert Wofford, Jasper; and a brother, Raymond Wofford, also of Jasper.
The funeral service was held Friday, Sept. 26 from Long Swamp Baptist Church. Interment was in the church cemetery with the Rev. Lamar Frady officiating. Roper Funeral Home of Jasper was in charge of the arrangements.
Frankie Burgess
Mrs. Frankie Mae Clark Burgess, age 80 of Canton, Ga., passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 23, 2003 at Canton Nursing Center.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, W.M. and Joan Clark of Ball Ground and Terry and Jane Clark of Douglasville; and sister, Ruth Ingram of Ball Ground. Three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25 from the Hopewell Baptist Church in the Clayton Community of Cherokee County with the Revs. Joey Dubois and Bobby Seagers officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Roper Funeral Home of Jasper was in charge of the arrangements.
Barbara Cressman
Mrs. Barbara M. Cressman passed away Sept. 22, 2003. She was a native of Chattanooga, Tn.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Harry Cressman; daughters, E. Jean Meadows of Suwanee and Grace Harris of Magnolia, Tx. She is also survived by grandchildren, Greg Harris Jr. of Magnolia and Elizabeth Meadows of Suwanee, as well as a son-in-law, Greg Harris of Magnolia. She was preceded in death by grandchild, Joe Harris.
She will be honored at a private memorial to be arranged later. Arrangements entrusted to Roper Funeral Home.
Mary Lou McWhorter
Mrs. Mary Lou Elizabeth Jones McWhorter, age 97 of Jasper, passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper. She was preceded in death by her husband, Doyle McWhorter; and her son, Dwight McWhorter.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Glenn Mullinax of Jasper; grandchildren, Kay and Jack Harbin of Ball Ground, Randall Griffeth and Melinda Mullinax, both of Jasper; brothers, Harley D. and Lloyd C. Jones, both of Jasper; sisters, Pearl Henson of Auburn Dale, Fl., Bonnie Lybarnd, Julia Jordan and Evelyn Parker, all of Jasper.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Sept. 28 from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with interment in Sunrise Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Charles O. Walker and Dr. Charlie Boggan officiating.
Virginia Hubschman
Mrs. Virginia Hubschman, age 86 of Jasper, passed away Sept. 27, 2003 at Grandview Nursing Center.
She is survived by her son, James William “Bill” Hubschman Jr. of West Port, N.Y.; daughters, Jill Chestnut of Jasper and Virginia Gallo, Adirondack, N.Y. Seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Chapel of Roper Funeral Home with the Rev. Herb Flanders officiating. The family did accept flowers or contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
James Hughey
Mr. James Dean Hughey, age 51 of Talking Rock, passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors are his mother, Anne Hughey, Columbia, S.C.; one son, John Hughey, Hamburg, Germany; one daughter, Kelly Acosta, Talking Rock; sisters, Betty McKevy, South Carolina, and Carol Lee, North Carolina. One granddaughter also survives.
A private memorial service will be held in Columbia, S.C. at a later date. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
James Hamrick
Mr. James Lawson Hamrick, age 73 of Jasper, passed away Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at Well Star Kennestone Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Reva Mae Hamrick, Jasper; sons and daughter-in-law, Jerry, Edward and Billy Hamrick, all of Jasper, and Glenn and Betty Hamrick, Ellijay; daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Johnny Atkins, Cassville, Ga., Jean and Sammy Hight, Adairsville, Ga., and Melissa and Doug Jones, Jasper; brother, Henry Hamrick, Ludville Community; half-brother, Sammy Lee Sheppard, Sonoraville, Ga.; sister, Leoma Young, Sonoraville. Nineteen grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Monday, Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. from Friendship Baptist Church with the Revs. Hollis Crook and Clay Fountain officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Steve, Scott, Kevin and Jeremy Hamrick, Johnny, Bradley and John Atkins and Jody Hight. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Flara Mae Johnson
Mrs. Flara Mae Nichols Johnson, age 90 of Talking Rock, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include her stepson, Hugh Johnson, Alabama; step-daughters, Jeannette Grizzle, Jasper, and Johnette Watson, Talking Rock; nephews, Lamar Nichols, Talking Rock, Walt Johnson, Jasper, and Nicky Maddox, Villa Rica; nieces, Eloise Claybough and Sarah Keeter, Kennesaw, and Janice Lowe, Talking Rock; sisters-in-law, Inez and Shirley Nichols. Seven step-grandchildren and several great-nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Saturday, Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. from Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Revs. Joey DuBoise, Moss Fountain and Steve Lowe officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Tim and Lamar Nichols, Alan Claybough, Mark Lowe, Nicky Maddox and Hugh Johnson. The family did receive flowers or donations may be made to Philadelphia Baptist Church. Cagle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Virginia Holt
Mrs. Virginia Ellen “Ginny” Holt, age 88 of Jasper, passed away Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include her son, Paul Holt, Jasper; daughters, Ruth Ingram, Nelson, Mary Padgett and Carole Mills, both of Jasper; sister, Elizabeth Grizzle, Ellijay. Ten grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. from Sharptop Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Blackwell officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Chris and Dwayne Holt, Bo Ingram, Jackie and J.C. Grizzle and Tony Padgett. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Bunia Densmore
Mrs. Bunia C. Densmore, age 84 of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003 at the Brian Center in Canton.
Survivors include her grandchildren, Brandy Slover, Tammy, Justin and Tiffany Murphy; three great-grandchildren, Britton and Jessica Slover and Beverly Irene Huckaby; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. from Refuge Baptist Church with the Revs. Jerry Weaver and Larry Johnson officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Edith Kent
Mrs. Edith Estelle Kent, age 75 of Dawsonville, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Emmett Kent, Dawsonville; sons and daughter-in-law, Garston Tatum, Canton, John and Kathy Tatum, Epworth, James Tatum, Ellijay, and Floyd Tatum, Talking Rock; stepson, E.J. Kent, Dawsonville; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Gerald Roland, Ball Ground; step-daughter, Lorene Duncan, Dawsonville. Nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Huey Holloway officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Bobby, Jared, Nathan, Travis, Everett and Jamie Tatum, William and Junior Roland.
Jim Blackwell
Mr. Jim “Heavy” Blackwell, age 52 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2003 at his residence.
Survivors include brothers, Randy Burt Blackwell, Tate, and Tunney Blackwell, Jasper; and one sister, Blondell Beck, Dawsonville.
The funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. from Yellow Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Padgett officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were: Cotes and William Mooney, Gene and Fred Evans, Michael Buchanan and Josh Hill. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Frank Worley
Mr. Frank Worley, age 100, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 at the Brian Center Nursing facility in Canton.
Survivors include his son, Paul Worley, Jefferson, Ga.; daughters, Bonnie Stanton, Acworth, and Jeannette Forest, Jasper.
The funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Gene Childers officiating. Interment was in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Gilmer County. Pallbearers were: Frankie Stanton, Gary Parker, Mark Holbert and Matthew Morris.
Thomas Smith
Mr. Thomas “Jack” Smith, age 80 of Jasper, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 at Northside Hospital Cherokee.
Mr. Smith was born Oct. 29, 1922 in Hall County and was raised there. He was a resident of Pickens County since 1977. He retired from Lockheed in 1981. During his retirement years he was able to enjoy his favorite hobbies of fly fishing and golf. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jasper and had been a member of various other Baptist churches since the age of 14. He had served in many church positions and was an ordained deacon. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary H. Smith, Jasper; daughters, Sharon Dionne, Summerville, S.C., and Rebecca Harris, Greer, S.C. Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Thursday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with Dr. Charlie Boggan officiating. Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were: Luke Denson, Ray Ferrell, Perry Ligon, Carl McCurdy, Roger Ruark and Alvin Young. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund.
John Walker Jr.
Mr. John Lewis Walker Jr., age 28, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center as the result of an auto accident.
Survivors include his father, John Lewis Walker Sr., Jasper; mother, Bertha Bramlett, Fairmount; son, Brandon Walker, Ellijay; daughters, Brandy and Natasha Walker, Ellijay; brother, Sidney Mahan, Jasper; sister, Patricia Childers, Jasper.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Walter Ingram and Herman Mulkey officiating. Interment was in the Church of Christ Cemetery in Ludville. Pallbearers were: Sidney Mahan, Allen Puffenbarger, Robbie Beck, Rick Bramlett, Anthony and Manuel Childers.
Virla Smith
Virla Pattillo Smith of Jasper passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, two days before her 97th birthday.
She was the daughter of Talmon and Ora Waldrop Pattillo and was born in DeKalb County, Ga. She graduated from McDonough High School, attended Florida State College for Women (now FSU) and received degrees from Georgia State Evening College and the University of Georgia. She taught school in DeKalb and Henry County before moving to Tampa in the late 1940s. She taught elementary school in Hillsborough County, Fl. until her retirement. Ms. Smith moved to Jasper in 1977 where she was active in Jasper United Methodist Church, Beta Eta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and other civic organizations. She was the widow of Richard H. Smith of Smoaks, S.C. and Tampa.
Survivors include her sister, Mildred Pattillo Hill of Tate; nieces, Mimi Jo Butler of Bent Tree and Patti Williams of Colorado; great-nieces, Karen McClellan of Canton and Ellen Butler of Kennesaw; great-nephew, Scott Williams of Colorado.
A graveside service was held at McDonough City Cemetery on Monday, Oct. 13 at 4 p.m. with the Revs. Parker Benson and Hoyt Jenkins officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Jasper United Methodist Church, 85 W Church St., Jasper, Ga. 30143 or the Joy House, PO Box 247, Jasper, Ga. 30143. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Larry Gay
Mr. Larry Gay, age 63 of Acworth, passed away Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004 at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital.
He is survived by a son, Todd Gay, Acworth; step-son, Kenny Hollis, Acworth; daughters, Lisa Price and Angie Biddy, both of Acworth; brothers, Charles Gay of Ellijay, Jim Gay of Ball Ground and Kenneth Gay of Jasper. Five grandchildren also survive. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15 from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home in Jasper with the Rev. Charles Gay officiating. Interment will follow in Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Josh and Kaleb Price, Tommy, David and Steven Gay and Donnie Gunn.
