Mr. John 'Ernie' Godfrey, age 57 of Talking Rock, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 at his residence. He was a Vietnam veteran and a member of the New Life Worship Center. Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Godfrey of Talking Rock; son, Shane Godfrey of Woodstock; daughter, Shelly Godfrey of Jasper; father,
Buster Godfrey of Talking Rock; brother, Dean Godfrey of Talking Rock; and grandchildren, Blake, Shaina, Peyton, Jaxon and Alana. The funeral service was held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9 from South Canton Church of God with Pastor Clint Claypoole and the Rev. Wallace Ratliffe officiating. Interment followed in the Godfrey Family Cemetery in Pickens County. Sosebee Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Hugh Pendley
Mr. Hugh T. Pendley, age 81 of Tate, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper. Survivors include his wife, Jean Pendley, Tate; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Donna Pendley of Canton, Barry and Becky Pendley of Tate and David and Brenda Pendley of Jasper;
daughter-in-law, Gail Pendley, Jasper; sister, Alice Lanning, Canton. Eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Pendley was preceded in death by a son, Richard (Hog). The funeral service was held Friday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Buddy Roper and Mark Henson officiating. Interment followed in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery with James and Troyet Buchanan, David Henson, Coleman Bruce, Paul Kennemur and Jerry Lanning serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Paul Wofford, Willis Pendley and Junior Lanning.
Charlie Darby, Jr.
Charlie Darby, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004 at Gilmer County Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born on June 3, 1932 in Pickens County to Marion and Alma Darby. Both parents preceded Charlie in death. Charlie is survived by his wife, Brenda; three sons and three daughters; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by two sisters, Gladys Fowler and Bess Satterfield; one brother, Harold Darby; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held at Bernhardt Funeral Home in Ellijay with the Revs. Steve Fields and Glen Arnold officiating. Burial was in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Ellijay.
Kenneth Johnson, Sr.
Mr. Kenneth Johnson, Sr., age 60 of Fairmount, passed away Friday evening at his residence following an extended illness. Mr. Johnson was born in Calhoun, Ga. on Sept. 30, 1944, son of the late Max and Louie Whittemore Johnson and had spent his entire life in the Fairmount Community. He was a member of the Fairmount United Methodist Church and had been employed by J&J Supermarket in Fairmount and Gordon
Central High School. Survivors include his sons, Kenneth Johnson, Jr. of Cottageville, S.C. and Dustin Johnson of Fairmount; daughters, Beverly Crepeau of Summerville, S.C. and Jacinda McCormick of Charleston, S.C.; God-daughter, Jessica Elmore; former wife, Linda Childers of Fairmount; sisters, Marguerite Messer of Perry, Ga., Jane Butler of Sonoraville and Nancy Johnson of Cartersville; brother, Lamar Johnson of Fairmount; and best friend, Roy Buttrum of Fairmount. Four grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13 from the Fairmount Methodist Church with the Rev. Bert Love officiating. Interment followed in the Johnson Cemetery in Fairmount. Pallbearers were: Chris
Johnson, William Butler, Danny and Randy Childers, Lee Callaway and Elton Lewis. Bob and Travis Childers were in charge of the music. Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Robert Rawls
Mr. Robert Stewart Rawls, age 49 of Jasper, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 from injuries received in an automobile accident in Dawsonville, Ga. Mr. Rawls was born July 22, 1955 in Demopolis, Al., the son of
Pattye Stewart Rawls and the late Joe W. Rawls. He was a cartoonist, accomplished journalist and avid lover of music and nature. Twice Georgia State champion speller, he will be remembered as an intellectual as well as a collector ofmemorabilia. He was employed as a district corporate communications writer with Aetna.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Mendheim Rawls, with whom he would have celebrated their 20th anniversary on Dec. 22; mother, Pattye Rawls of Calhoun; sisters, Alma R. Massingill of Calhoun and Jennie R. Stephens of Amelia Island, Fl.; brothers, Guy W. and H. Perry Rawls, both of Calhoun; and Natacha Poilane Grant who moved to the US from France as an exchange student at 16 and remained with the Rawls through college. A memorial service was held Friday, Dec. 10 at 10 a.m. from the Harris Arts Center in Calhoun. The family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Red Cross and the Audubon Society. Major Edward Jones Sr.
Major (Ret.) Edward W. Jones Sr., age 87 of Jasper, passed away Monday, Nov. 17, 2003 at Grandview Health Care Center.
Mr. Jones retired from the US Army after 20 plus years of service, retiring with the rank of Major. During service he received the Bronze and Silver Stars.
Survivors include his wife, Clara K. Jones, Jasper; sons, Edward W. Jones Jr. and Robert P. Jones, both of Jasper; daughter, Judith Jones Schwarz, Casselberry, Fl.; two sisters, Margaret Jones Thistlethwaite, Richmond, Va., and Virginia Jones Snelson, Knoxville, Tn. Four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cagle Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles O. Walker, Von Hinton and Dr. Charlie Boggan officiating. Interment followed in the Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with military services. The family did accept flowers or donations to the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Home, PO Box 1000, Stockbridge, Ga. 30218.
Virgil Marsh
Mr. Virgil Marsh, age 79 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 at Canton Nursing Center.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Marsh, Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Debbie Marsh, Flowery Branch; daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and David Wentworth, Jasper; brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Rose Marsh, Tuttle, Ok., Al and Anne Marsh, Marlo, Ok., and Curtis Marsh, California; sisters and brothers-in-law, Norma and Everett Hunt and Nancy and E.J. Crow, all of Marlo, and Ruby Martin, Collinsville, Ok. Five grandchildren, Kelly, Kerry and Christy Wentworth and Bryan and Steven Marsh also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 2 p.m. from Jasper First Baptist Church with Dr. Charlie Boggan and the Rev. Charles O. Walker officiating. Interment was in Jasper City Cemetery. The family requests for those that wish to make donations to the Pickens County Library or to Jasper First Baptist. Cagle Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Sam Carney
Sam W. Carney, age 87 of Dawsonville, passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 at Grandview Health Care Center in Jasper following a period of declining health.
Born in Lumpkin County, Mr. Carney lived most of his life in Dawson County. He was a retired carpenter, a US Army veteran of WW II where he served in the Pacific Theatre, and was a member of Amicalola Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delphia Carney.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Peggy Carney of Dawsonville; and one grandson, Bryan Carney.
The funeral service was held Monday, Nov. 24 at 1 p.m. from Bearden Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Dave Holbrook and Lawton Burt officiating. Interment was in Amicalola Baptist Church Cemetery.
J.T. Butler
Mr. J.T. Butler, age 72 Morganton, Ga., passed away Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 at Fannin Regional Hospital.
Mr. Butler had lived in this area for four years after moving from Talking Rock, Ga. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Blue Ridge, Ga. He retired from the Amicalola EMC in Jasper and was a member of Redwine Lodge Masonic Lodge as a 33 Degree Shriner.
Survivors include wife, Doris Towe Butler; children, Barry Butler of Jasper, Jerrie Butler of Marble Hill, Tim Butler of Talking Rock; stepchildren, Jim Ballew of Smyrna, Fred Ballew of Morganton, Joe Ballew of Suches, Mary Ballew of Dahlonega and Donna Brackett of Morganton; and sister, Ruby Fussell of Lakeland, Fl. Five grandchildren, Michael Butler, Christi Butler Lawson, Jennifer Michelle Butler, Heather Nichole Butler and Daniel Timothy Butler; three great-grandchildren; and eleven step-grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2:00 p.m. from the Henry-Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Roger Beck and Dr. Alton Towe officiating. Music was provided by Greg Norton. Serving as pallbearers were: Michael Butler, Dan Butler, Jimmy Hopkins Jr., Billy Evans, Steve Timons, Chuck Butler, Tim Towe and Josh Ballew. Honorary pallbearers were: Gene Clark, Dan Underwood, Terry Thomason, Leonard Reeves, Jim Hopkins Sr., Ray Knox, Rodney Hornsby, Jason Queen, Harlin Conley and Jody Ballew. Interment followed in the Morganton Baptist Church Cemetery.
Robert Duckett
Mr. Robert D. “Bobby” Duckett, age 58 of Alpharetta, passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Duckett, Alpharetta; mother, Pearl Duckett; sons, Kenneth Patrick Duckett, Locust Grove, and David Shane Duckett, Douglasville; daughters, Wendy Lashelle Hunley, Jackson, Ga., and Carolina Espinoza, Alpharetta; brother, Sammy Duane Duckett, Canton; sister, Kathy Evans, Tate. Nine grandchildren also survive.
The funeral service was held Monday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. from Arbor Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Hector Rojos officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Elizabeth Champion
Mrs. Elizabeth “Lib” Holcomb Champion, age 82 of Tate, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center in Jasper.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Patsy Champion of Tate; and one grandson.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Oct. 5 from Cool Springs Baptist Church in Tate with the Rev. Steve Wigington officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. Roper Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Gordon Hales
Mr. Gordon Lee Hales, age 76 of Jasper, passed away Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center following two weeks of illness.
Mr. Hales was born Sept. 23, 1927 in Gordon County, the son of the late Cicero and Lula Oliver Hales. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Garland Hales. During his lifetime, Mr. Hales was employed by Carriage Industries of Calhoun.
Survivors include his wife, Amy Odell Long Hales, to whom he was married for 51 years; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Larry Bates of Harrison, Tn.; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Otis Petty of Calhoun; sister-in-law, Velma Hales; grandchild, Steven Hales. Nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Tuesday at 11 a.m. from the Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of Max Brannon & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Eddie Brannon officiating. Interment will follow in the Craneater Cemetery.
Raymond Pinnell
Raymond Pinnell, age 58 of Woodstock, passed away Monday, Sept. 29, 2003. He was owner/operator of Pinnell Forklift Repair and a member of Ray Thomas Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Pinnell of Woodstock; daughter, Yvette Pinnell of Woodstock; sons, Tim Pinnell of Jasper and Steve Pinnell of Mableton; sisters, Phyllis Albansoder of Charlotte, N.C., Teresa Cribbs of Atlanta and Brenda Pinnell of Acworth. Two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Friday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. from Ray Thomas Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carrie Scott officiating. Interment was in Macedonia Memorial Park. Elmer Stone
Mr. Elmer Stone, age 70 of Ranger, Ga., passed away Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 at Gordon Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Stone was born in Pickens County, son of the late Luther and Nellie Pass Stone. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Lester, Marvin, Verlon and Gene Stone; and one sister, Mrs. Clara Mae Stone. He was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Norme Jean Davis Stone, Ranger; son, Michael Elmer Stone, Ranger; daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Carl and Mark Moore and Mrs. Nancy and David Wilbanks, all of Resaca, Mrs. Linda Renner of Ranger; brothers, Delmar, Troy and Terry Stone, all of Ranger; sisters, Gladys Stone of Ranger, Mrs. Willie Faye Brooks of Ludville. Four grandsons and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service was held Sunday at 4:30 p.m. from Bradley Anderson Memorial Chapel of the Max Brannon and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Dennis Childress officiating. Patricia Troxell
Mrs. Patricia Troxell, age 64 of Jasper, passed away Friday, Oct. 3, 2003 at her residence. She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her sons, John Troxell of Canton and Ratiher Troxell of Jasper; daughter, Debra Ledbetter, Jasper; brothers, Richard and Daniel Pasko, both of Baltimore, Md. Thirteen grandchildren also survive.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. from Sosebee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Charles Davis officiating.
Jackie Wofford
Mr. Jackie E. Wofford, age 62 of Morristown, Tn., formerly of Jasper, Ga., passed away Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at Morristown Hamblen Hospital.
He is survived by his wife, Mae Wofford of Morristown; brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester and Betty Wofford, Paul and Janet Wofford, Billy and Donna Wofford, all of Jasper, and Glenn and Winnell Wofford, Ball Ground; sisters, Lorene Watkins of Jasper and Vertie Moody and husband Randall of the Clayton Community. Special nieces and nephews also survive.

John Moss
Mr. John Howard “Jay” Moss, age 76 of the Hinton Community, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2003 at his residence.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Lee Moss, Hinton; son, Eddie Moss, Hinton; daughter, Margaret Chastain, Hinton; brothers, Doug and Randall Moss, both of Monroe, Fred and Roy Moss, both of Alabama; sisters, Ozell Silvers, Ellijay, Lillian Bunch Ludville, Dorothy Fox, Helen Tillery and June Thompson, all of Monroe. Seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Moss was preceded in death by a son, Lamar.
The funeral service was held Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. from the Hinton United Methodist Church with the Revs. Keith Willard and Cliff Nelson officiating. Leona Fountain
Mrs. Leona Duckett Fountain, age 78 of Jasper, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2003 at Mountainside Medical Center.
Survivors include her sons, Ronnie and Ricky Fountain, both of Jasper; daughter, Betty Sue King, Jasper; brothers, Robert Duckett, Hinton, James Duckett, Jasper, and Billy Duckett, Hill City; sister, Maxine Anderson, Ellijay. Ten grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren also survive.
