Funeral services will be held 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Marshall Singletary and Wes Lawson officiating. Jay will lie in state at the church from 4-4:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Burke Memorial Gardens.
Jay was a 2004 graduate of Burke County High School and was attending Brewton-Parker College in Mt. Vernon on a baseball scholarship. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Waynesboro.
Jay was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Broadus West. He is survived by his parents, Hugh and Lorraine Robinson of Waynesboro; brother, Nick Robinson; grandparents, Luther and Doris Robinson of Waynesboro; and grandmother, Betty West of Elberton. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Bob Phillips, Wesley Askew, Chris Stewart, Jonathan Broxton, Scott Rogers and Cameron Walden. Honorary pallbearers will the Burke County High School baseball team and Brewton-Parker athletics. All pallbearers please assemble at the church at 3:45 p.m. Thursday.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 29, at the DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Lewis Edward Saxon Jr., 33,
entered into rest Monday Sept. 27, 2004 at the Medical College of Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at the DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Dixon officiating. Mr. Saxon spent most of his life in Burke County and was a member of the Greenfork Baptist Church in Perkins. A 1990 graduate of Burke County High School, he was presently employed with Starette Trucking Company. He was a member of the United Kennel Club.
Mr. Saxon is survived by his wife, Melissa Griffin Saxon, two daughters, Macie and Samantha Saxon, and a son, Edward Saxon, all of Perkins. He is also survived by his mother, Faye S. Pleasants (Richard) of Millen; a sister, Teresa Johnson (Pat) of Waynesboro; a brother, George Edward Saxon (Cindy) of Millen; father-in-law, Howard Griffin (Cindy) of Hephzibah; mother-in-law, Susan Ligon (Larry) of Augusta; sister-in-law, Heather Edwards (Bill) of Martinez; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Pallbearers will be Troy Quick, Neal Quick, Mark Quick, George E. Saxon Jr., Chris Riggs, Robin Elliott and Matthew Reese. The pallbearers are asked to assemble at the funeral home at 12:45 p.m. Thursday. A visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 29, at the DeLoach-Kennedy Funeral Home Chapel. Mr. Melvin “Pudding” D. Dant, 73,
of Waynesboro died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004. Mr. Dant was born in Grand Lakes, Ark., the son of the late William David Dant and Beulah Mae Wert. He lived in Waynesboro for the past 30 years. Mr. Dant graduated from Eudora Ark High School in 1950. He worked as a saw filer for Kimberly Clark Lumber Company.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Matt Shyrock and Keith Jordon officiating. Interment will follow in Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Dant served in the U.S. Army as a Private First Class in the 341st Engr. Co. (Panel Bridge) in 1954, then as CPL for two years out of Ft. Hood, Texas. He also served in the Army National Guard & Army Reserve as E6 295 the Medical Co. (HLD) (SEP) until September 1962.
Mr. Dant was a devoted Christian and member of Bethel Baptist Church in Alexander for over 20 years, serving as an usher, teacher and mentor. He leaves to cherish very fond, everlasting and precious memories, dedicated, devoted, committed, loving, kind and a server to all who knew him.
Mr. Dant is survived by his wife of eight years, Minima “B.B.” Dant; a son, Melvin Douglas Dant Jr. of Evansville, Ind.; a daughter, Lelia Sue Dant of Hopkinsville, Ky.; two adopted nephews, the Rev. Jimmy Dant and Frankie Dant; two stepsons, Samuel Deason of Tenn. and Robert Shane Deason of Ill.; a stepdaughter, Daphane Ann Senecal of Evans; and 12 grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Steve Senecal, Jimmy Neasbitt, Wes Lawson, Linnie McCaul, Don Lambert and Bryan Kerr. Honorary pallbearers are the Adult Men Sunday School Class of Bethel Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bethel Cemetery Fund or to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Henry C. Chance, 74,
of Perkins died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004 at the Veterans Hospital in Augusta following a brief illness. His funeral was 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at Magnolia Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Turner and Richard Daniel officiating.
Burial was in the Habersham Cemetery.
Mr. Chance, a native of Jenkins County, was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church and a retired employee of Pepsi Cola. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Carpenter and Mae Hopper Chance; and three brothers, Reuben Carpenter Chance II, Thomas Lovett Chance and Robert Lacy Chance.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Jester Reeves Chance; three stepsons, Thomas, Donald and Ronald Reeves; a sister-in-law, Irma Hawes Chance; and two nieces, Marie Chance Whyte and Rebecca Chance Hickman. Pallbearers were Brad Hickman, Cecil Hickman, Jake Newton, Drew Newton, George W. Gunn and Jack Turner.
Mr. Burwell Jackson Brown, 83,
entered into rest Monday, Aug. 23, 2004 at his residence. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, Aug. 25) at Burke Memorial Gardens with Dr. G. Al Wright officiating.
Mr. Brown was a retired parts manager from Blanchard Equipment Company of Waynesboro. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Mary Quick Brown of Waynesboro; daughter, Jane Williams of Waynesboro; son Jim Brown of Savannah; step daughter, Iris Mead of Augusta; two sisters, Jane Rowland of Twin City and Dot Beach of Evans; and nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Pearllean Cooper-Evans of Shelly Lane in Keysville,
entered into rest on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004 at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital. Home-going service celebration will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 28, at St. Clair Baptist Church in Keysville with the Rev. Jimmy L. McCullough III officiating. The funeral processional will leave from 924 Stephens Road at 12:15 p.m. Burial will be in the Cooper Family Cemetery in Gough.
Mrs. Cooper-Evans is survived by her husband, Ronald Evans of Keysville; parents, Watson Cooper Sr. and Pearlie Mae Cooper of Gough; one brother, Watson (Monica) Cooper Jr. of Keysville; two sisters, Mary Ann (Lero) Andrews of Keysville and Mamie Westley of Augusta; one god daughter, Nikima Rollins; two god grandchildren; seven brothers-in-law; seven sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The Rev. Herman A. Rhodes, 87,
beloved husband of Mrs. Annie M. Rhodes, entered his final journey Monday, Aug. 16, at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. Presiding Elder Rhodes was born in Keysville, a son of the late Rev. Marvin Rhodes and Mrs. Ida B. Rhodes. His early education was in Keysville. He graduated from Morris Brown College. He was the recipient of honorary degrees from Campbell College, Jackson, Miss.; B.F. Theological Seminary, Jacksonville, Fla.; and Monrovia College, Liberia, West Africa.
Rev. Rhodes began his ministry at the age of 13. He served God and mankind for 74 years. He pastored in Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, New York and 28 years in the Philadelphia area. His accomplishments were many, including organizing the A.M.E. Mass Choir, the annual Philadelphia city-wide revival, Chairman of the local Pan-Methodist Commission secretary of the Political Action Committee, one of the coordinators for the 1963 March on Washington under Dr. M.L. King, established a youth scholarship college fund in his name and was a member of Rose of Sharon Prince Hall Lodge No. 39.
Presiding Elder Rhodes was a dedicated family man, dedicated to his wife of 61 years, Annie Mae Rhodes; his children, Alice Rhodes Hinsley, Marvin Rhodes (Roberta) Hiram Rhodes Jr., Jacquelin Georges (Paul), Rose Marie Rhodes Miller (Ronald), Brenda Rhodes Jackson (Richard) and Yvonne Rhodes; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and a contingent of nieces and nephews and cousins. his two brothers, Robert Walker and the Rev. Peter B. Walker. His four sisters, Mamie Lee, Louise Rosario, Vonciel Robinson and Joanna C. Jackson preceded him in death. He was very devoted to his surviving sister, Mayor Emma Rhodes Gresham.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Tabor A.M.E. Church, Keysville. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations to Mt. Tabor A.M.E. Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 75, Keysville, GA 30816.
Anne Quinney Murray, 77,
of Valdosta died Aug. 25, 2004, at Langdale Place in Valdosta after a sudden illness.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004 at the Buena Vista Cemetery with the Rev. Craig Rikard of Valdosta officiating.
Mrs. Murray was born on July 16, 1927 in Augusta, the daughter of the late Gray Quinney and Madge Saunders Quinney of Waynesboro. She graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1948. Later that year she married Edward Newton Murray Jr. of Buena Vista. In 1969, Mr. and Mrs. Murray became the owners of Staten Plantation in Lowndes County and remodeled the Staten homeplace. Mrs. Murray was a homemaker, a member of First Baptist Church of Buena Vista, a past president of WMU and worked as a nurse’s aide at Marion Memorial Hospital, which her husband was instrumental in founding. She lived in Buena Vista since her marriage until she moved to Lowndes County eight years ago.
Survivors include one son and a daughter-in-law, Gray and Dianne Murray of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Marcia Alexander and Madge and Bill Culbreth, all of Valdosta; eight grandchildren, Daniel and Cary Murray, Kimberly and William Siegel, Katherine Murray and John Murray, all of Birmingham, Ala., Casey Alexander, Kelly and Mark Matheny, Lauren Culbreth and Lesley Culbreth all of Valdosta; and two great-grandsons, Ben and Grayton Murray of Birmingham, Ala. Minnie Carter was a special companion and friend during Mrs. Murray’s last 18 months. The family will receive friends and family at the home of Carol Murray following graveside services.

Mr. Johnny Clint Walden, 31,
of Waynesboro, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004 at his residence.
Funeral services were held 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Crossroads Baptist Church with Brother Mike Andrews, Brother Keith McFeely and Brother Ron Drawdy officiating. Interment followed at Burke Memorial Gardens. Mr. Walden worked in the maintenance department at Plant Vogtle. He was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church, Sons of the Confederacy, Vidette Hunting Club and secretary of Burke Dugout Club.
Mr. Walden was preceded in death by his mother Betty Jean Walden. Survivors include his wife, Amy Davis Walden; son, Jordan Chase Walden; and stepdaughter, Heather Wheatley. Other surviving family members are his father, J.C. Walden of Blythe; stepmother Juanita Walden of Blythe; two brothers, Charles “J.C. Jr.” Walden (Kaye) of Augusta, and Clay Walden (Charlotte) of Waynesboro; four sisters, Beverly Black (Mark), Penny Walden and Essie Broxton (Randy) all of Waynesboro and Pamela Jowett of North Carolina; stepsister, Melanie Murphy of Atlanta; stepbrother, Jeff Murphy of Augusta; and 7 nephews, 6 nieces, 1 great niece and 1 great nephew.
Pallbearers were Jay Glisson, Doug Richardson, Bill Cobb, Chris Stewart, Chris Broxton, Richie McClellan, David Rogers, Dale Godbee, Rusty Broxton and Rob Daniel.
