Mr. William Kenneth Carmical Sr.
Mr. William Kenneth Carmical Sr. died Monday, April 15, 2002 at his home in Johnson City, Tennessee after an extended illness.
A recent Johnson City resident, Carmical was a Georgia native and long-time member of Roswell Street Baptist Church of Marietta, Ga. and had recently transferred his letter of membership to Central Baptist Church.
Mr. Carmichael served in the Navy during World War II and joined the Army shortly after the war. During his extended military career, Mr. Carmical served with several airborne divisions in Europe and Japan before becoming an army pilot, flying both helicopters and fixed wing aircraft. He was proud to have served in Korea and Vietnam where he received numerous citations including the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Cluster.
Following his military retirement, Mr. Carmical was a test pilot in Alabama and Iran. He then worked with WSB TV in Atlanta flying their news helicopter. Upon retirement, he settled in Marietta, Ga. with his wife, Marion. They both enjoyed travel, family and friends.
Surviving are daughter, Jenny Carmical of Johnson City; sons, William Kenneth Carmical Jr. of Roswell, Ga., Gary Stephen Carmical of Apache Creek, New Mexico; brother and sister-in-law, R. G. (Jerry) and Catherine Carmical of LaGrange, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Patsy Carmical of Moreland, Ga.; brother, Roger Carmical of Moreland, Ga.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Barbara and Roy Whatley of Smyrna, Ga.; seven grandchldren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation is Friday, April 19 from 5-7 p.m. at Tetrick Funeral Services, Sunset Chapel, Johnson City. A funeral will be Saturday, April 20 at 11 a.m. at Central Baptist Church, 300 North Roan Street, Johnson City, Tenn. A graveside service will be Monday, April 22 at 11 a.m. at Crest Lawn Memorial Park in Atlanta, Ga.

Mrs. Minnie A. Geter Chatman died Monday, April 15, 2002 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange, Ga.
A funeral is Friday, April 19 at 3 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church, Newnan, with Rev. Felton James, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. G. B. Vaughn, Rev. Willie L. Geter, Rev. Rufus Smith, and Rev. Clinton Melson. Burial in Sunset Cemetery. The cortege will assemble at the residence the day of the service at 2 p.m.
Mrs. Minnie Arleana Geter Chatman was born June 7, 1936 in Coweta County to the late Deacon and Sister Willie B. "Ora Lee" Geter. At a very early age she joined Bethel Heard Baptist Church in Franklin, Ga. where she served until she moved away. She attended Coweta County Schools, graduating in the Class of 1952. Afterwards she moved to Atlanta, Ga., where she attended Blayton Business College in 1955. She then moved to Jersey City, New Jersey where she attended and completed Cosmetology School in 1963. She worked and retired form AT&T after 17 years of service. While in New Jersey she was an active and devoted member of St. John Baptist Church. She was a member of numerous auxiliaries. She was married to the late Albert James Chatman, and they had one son. In 1991 she returned to Newnan to assist in the care of her mother. She then joined Friendship Baptist Church and remained a member and served until her death. She was very loyal and loved her church where she grew up, Bethel Heard Baptist. She had a true love for people, especially her famiy and anyone who came in conversation with her loved her. She was a go-getter and never gave up short of her goal, she was a very strong, loving and caring person.
Four brothers preceded her in death, Willie Frank Geter, Martin Geter, Charlie Geter and Joe Melvin Geter.

Mrs. Hattie Lee Savage Rutledge was born March 5, 1931 in Homer (Banks County) Ga., to Leslie Savage Sr. and Lillie Mae Johnson Savage. She was the first born of 11 children. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Martha Ann Savage; siblings, Leslie Savage Jr. and Betsy Lewis. She was married to the late Mr. Ruben Taylor Sr. and they had a daughter, Alice (Naeemah) Taylor. She later remarried to Mr. Ernest Rutledge of Pensacola, Fla. Her life was filled with Christian service from childhood through her adult years. In Pensacola she was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and served on the usher board and choir. Upon moving to Atlanta, Ga. in 1973 she joined the New Light Baptist Church. Later she joined Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board #1. She was a school teacher in the Atlanta Public School System. Also, she was a member of AFSME Local Union #1644 (American Federaton of State and Municipal Employees). She served in many capacities with the union as a trustee. She traveled nationally with the union in voter registration campaigns.

Mr. C. Edwin Brasch, of Grantville, Ga., died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare Northside in Atlanta.

Mr. Brasch was born September 2, 1906 in Grantville, son of the late John Fitzgerald Brasch and the late Gaby Cotton Brasch. A lifelong resident of Grantville, he retired as vice-president of C&S National Bank in Newnan and had served as president of Banks Brothers Company in Grantville. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Grantville and had served on the Administrative Board. Mr. Brasch served a number of years as a member of the Grantville City Council and was a former member of the Newnan Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Isaac Brasch of Atlanta; two grandchildren, Charles Brasch of Athens and Caroline Brasch of Gainesville.

Miss Margaret L. Culpepper, 95, of the Lone Oak Community of Meriwether County, died Monday, April 15, 2002 at Alvista Care Home in Greenville.
A funeral will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 17 at Allen-Lee Memorial United Methodist Church in Lone Oak. The Rev. Rance Sprayberry will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Warren Gray, Billy Perry, Frank Willingham, Pete Johnson, Russell Willingham and Alfred Daniel.
Miss Culpepper was born May 5, 1906 in Lone Oak, daughter of the late Homer and Theodora Herring Culpepper. A graduate of the University of Georgia, she attended the University of Virginia and taught Latin and English in various high schools in Georgia and South Carolina. She later worked with the Department of Family and Children's Services and retired from Meriwether County in 1971 as a casework supervisor.
She was the oldest member of Allen-Lee Memorial United Methodist Church in Lone Oak, having joined Prospect Methodist Church (which became Allen-Lee) in 1919. She served the church in many capacities and assisted in writing a history of the church. She was a charter member of the Lone Oak Community Club, was an avid birdwatcher and a lover of nature, and her love of flowers was exhibited by the grounds at her homeplace in Lone Oak.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Eleanor Willingham of Lone Oak; and several cousins, including Mrs. Florence Johnson's children, Nancy Grace Gray and Rosalind Edmondson, both of Lone Oak and Bill Johnson of Duluth.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Miss Culpepper may be made to the Allen-Lee Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.

Mrs. Mae Wheelus Foster, 54, of the Lone Oak Community of Meriwether County, died Monday, April 15, 2002 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
A funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at Union Baptist Church in the St. Marks Community of Meriwether County. The Rev. Bill Smith, the Rev. Bill Deakins, and the Rev. Searcy Jackson will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Born April 17, 1947, Mrs. Foster was a daughter of the late Charlie and Maggie Morris Wheelus. She was a lifelong resident of Meriwether County and owned and operated Mae's Florist in Lone Oak for 20 years. She was a member of Union Baptist Church in the St. Marks Community of Meriwether County, was a member of the choir, and had served as Sunday School superintendent.
Surviving are her husband, Hansel Foster of Lone Oak; daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Allen Cheeks of Austell; son and daughter-in-law, Hank and Helen Foster of Lone Oak; five sisters, Mrs. Aldine Pierce of Sharpsburg, Mrs. Charlene Newman of St. Marks, Mrs. Katherine Buice of Suwanee, Mrs. Jeanette Cato of Lone Oak, and Mrs. Betty Hunter of Moreland; ten grandchildren.

Ms. Marline Ray, 66, of Brannon Street, Whitesburg, Ga., died Monday, April 15, in a Carrollton area hospital.
She was born September 30, 1935 in Beauregard Parrish, La., to the late Fannie Perkins Buxton. Ms. Ray was retired from Wellington Mills and was Baptist by faith. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Harold Loyd Ray Jr. and a brother, Greg Perkins.

Born March 10, 1918 in Barbour County, Mrs. Abercrombie was the daughter of the late Jim D. and Ella Cutchens Sanders. She was preceded in death by her husband William Alfred Abercrombie. She had lived in Douglasville for the past 8 years and had lived in DeKalb County from 1956 until 1994. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Mrs. Garrett was born February 4, 1917 in LaGrange, daughter of the late L. P. and Della Cumby Smith. She lived in the Atlanta area for 40 years before returning to LaGrange in 1998. She was a member of Bethel Chapel Baptist Church in LaGrange, was retired from Piedmont Manufacturing Company in East Point, and was the wife of the late Leon H. Garrett.
Surviving are sister, Mrs. Lola Mae Eubanks of Daytona Beach, Fla.; eight, grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Richard L. Garrett, and a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Jenkins.

Mrs. Myrtle Holladay, 96, of Newnan, Ga., died Sunday, April 14, 2002 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Holladay was born February 10, 1906 in Carroll County, Ga. She was a charter and present member of Arnco Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and taught children through values of living. She raised children by setting an example of how the Christian should live.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Edward Kelley.

Mrs. Evelyn Hickman, 88, of Sharpsburg, Ga., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange, Ga.
She was born July 28, 1913 in Wellsburg, OH, daughter of the late John Hendrick and the late Ida (Hobbs) Hendricks. She married Charles Byard Hickman on December 12, 1935. Mrs. Hickman graduated from East Liverpool High School and went on to attend Business College. She and her husband moved to Miami, FL in 1951 where she worked for W.E. Johnson Equipment Company as an administrative assistant and office manager until her retirement. She and her husband moved to Georgia in 1978.
In Newnan she attended Central Baptist Church and was active in "Feeding our Friends" meals for shut-ins. She taught Sunday School throughout her life as a Christian. She was selected Woman of the Year by the American Business Women Association and was fondly known as the "Story Lady" for writing and presenting stories of her life as a child to hundreds of Coweta County school children over the last 10 years. She was an avid musician enjoying playing the piano, violin, and singing in the choir.
Visitation will be at McKoon Funeral Home on Sunday, April 14, 2002 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Mrs. Evelyn Evans Hopkins, 77, of Moreland, Ga., died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at the home of her daughter in Elberton, Ga.
A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13 at Faith Baptist Church at Moreland. The Rev. Charles Pharis and the Rev. Terry Hopkins will officiate, and burial will be in the Grantville Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tom Andrews, Ed Bledsoe, Dan Jacobs, Ben Berry, Josh Hopkins and Rob Edwards.
Mrs. Hopkins was born July 26, 1924 in Moreland, daughter of the late Andrew and Ludie Howard Evans. A retired licensed practical nurse, she lived in Elberton for 31 years before returning to Moreland in 1986. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church at Moreland and was the wife of the late Robert M. Hopkins.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and James Edwards of Greenville, South Carolina and JoAnne and Alton Dove of Elberton; son, the Rev. Mr. Elliott Kee, 75, of Pierce Chapel Road, Newnan, Ga., died Thursday, April 11, 2002 at Southwest Christian Hospice.
He was born in Coweta County March 1, 1927 and was a retired local barber shop owner.
He served in the United States Army during World War II. He joined the Army at age 18 and spent one year in Japan, on the Occupational Force. He owned and operated Kee's Barber Shop in Newnan for more than 30 years, retiring in 1992. He was a deacon and member of Providence Baptist Church for 37 years.
The family was receiving friends Friday, April 12 from 6-8 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.
A funeral is Saturday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Ken Norton and Rev. Searcy Jackson officiating. Burial will be in Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, 918 Providence Church Road.

Dr. Claude Townsend
Dr. Claude Townsend, 73, of Florence, Mississippi, died Thursday, April 4, 2002 at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center.
Dr. Townsend was on the board of directors and served as an adjunct professor at Immanuel Baptist Theological Seminary on Fischer Road in Sharpsburg, Ga.
He was born August 6, 1928 in Pelahatchie to the late James Clyde and Mary Walters Townsend. He attended school at Johns, Hinds Community College and Mississippi College. He received his B.A., Master's and Doctorate degrees from Immanuel Baptist Seminary in Atlanta. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was employed by Brown Music before establishing Townsend Piano Company in Jackson, Miss. in 1950. He served as deacon at Broadmoor Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Florence, Miss.
He served as president of the Mississippi Baptist Convention in 1963-64 and was music and education director for several churches in the Jackson area. He pastored Faith Baptist Church, Richland and Metro Baptist Church in Jackson. During this time he established the American Christian Counseling School in Jackson and authored a series of Christian counseling books He also served as an instructor for Reuion Church in Dallas, Texas and Immanuel Baptist Seminary in Atlanta. Over the years, he made mission trips to India, Korea, the Philippines and Africa and was named president of the All-India Prayer Fellowship. He and his wife, Louise Gideon Townsend, would have celebrated 48 years of marriage on April 10. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Mary Ella Michaudt and twin brother, Clyde Townsend.
Surviving in addition to his wife are five children, Debbie (Gavin Sr.) Lott of Morton, MS, Tesa (Herman) Duckworth of Mendenhall, MS, Claudia (Bruce) Steele of Florence, MS, Keith (Connie) Townsend of Mize and Ken Townsend of Florence; two brothers, John H. Townsend of Florence and Lester Townsend of Franklinton, Louisiana; and 12 grandchildren, Gavin Lott Jr., Becky Lott, Emily Lott, Josh Duckworth, Justin Duckworth, Jeremy Duckworth, Bryan Steele, Bradley Steele, Brittany Steele, Katie Townsend, Gary Townsend and Maggie Townsend.
Visitation was at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Pearl, Mississippi. A funeral was 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Cleary Baptist Church with burial in Forence Cemetery. Arthur Blessitt officiated. The remains were placed in state one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mr. Clyde Burks, 82, of Warren, Arkansas, died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at Wagnon Nursing Home in Warren.
A funeral is 10 a.m. Friday, April 12 in the chapel of Frazer's Funeral Home in Warren. The Rev. Roy Grice Jr. and the Rev. Craig Jenkins will officiate, and burial will be in the Moseley Cemetery in Warren.
Mr. Burks was born Sept. 8, 1919 in Bradley County, Arkansas, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Burks. He was a lifelong resident of Warren, retired as a millwright from Potluck Lumber Company in Warren, and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Warren.
Surviving are son, Dr. Billy W. Mr. Earl Strickland, 88, of Lower Fayetteville Road, Newnan, Ga., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center in Newnan.
Mr. Strickland was born August 28, 1913 in Meriwether County. He was retired owner of Strickand Market after 38 years. He was a veteran of the United States Mechant Marines.

Mrs. Jollie Zane Pope Terrell, 74, of Ephesus, Ga., died Wednesday, April 10, 2002 after several months of declining health.
Mrs. Terrell was born in Heard County, Ga., Feb. 25, 1928 to the late Franklin Howard Pope and Albia Cook Pope. She was a great influence to the many children that she taught. Heard County and especially the Ephesus Community will forever be grateful for her great contribution to their young lives. She was a member of the NEA, GNEA, and the Ephesus Baptist Church. She was married to J. F. Terrell for almost 59 years. Mrs. Terrell also served the people of Bowdon, Ga. for ten years as the Bowdon Hospital Administrator.
A funeral will be Friday, April 12, at 11 a.m. at Ephesus Baptist Chruch with the Rev. Ralph Caldwell officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Nancy Gardiner Willard Holliday
Mrs. Nancy Gardiner Willard Holliday, 88, of Ledgley Drive, Shaftsbury, Vermont, died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at her home.
Mrs. Holliday was born Sept. 16, 1913 in Rye, New York, daughter of LeBaron and Anabel Van Nostrand Willard. She was a maternal descendant of Lion Gardiner who was the owner of the historic Gardiner's Island off the coast of Long Island and a founder of the Gardiner dynasty in America. On her paternal side Mrs. Holliday's ancestry is traced to the Willards of Brooklyn, a founding family of the New York borough and also the lineage of the Mayflower Bradford and LeBaron families. Mrs. Holliday's grandfather, the late Edward A. Willard, was a well-known yachtsman who defended the America's Cup from 1893 to 1895.
Mrs. Holliday attended Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT and Finch Junior College in New York City. She was first married to Dr. Frank B. Orr, longtime resident of Newnan, Ga. and lineal descendant of Robert Simms, an original settler of Virginia in 1694 and Captain John Dickinson of Revolutionary War fame.
Following Dr. Orr's death in 1957, she was married to Floyd N. Holliday. After moving to Shaftsbury, Mrs. Holliday was employed as manager of the gift shop at the Iron Kettle in Shaftsbury for 14 years. Mr. Holliday died in 1979.
Mrs. Holliday is survivied by a daughter, Nancy Van Nostrand Fanning of Virginia Beach, VA; a son, Frank Brock Orr Jr. of Columbus, GA; step-daughter, Elizabeth Holliday Nutter of Montreal, Canada; step-son, John Holliday of St. Petersburg, FL; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three step-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. Holliday was predeceased by a sister, Frances Stanton Willard and two brothers, LeBaron Sands Willard and John Van Nostrand Willard.
The Burial Office and Eucharistic Service will be offered Thursday, April 11 at 1 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bennington, Vermont, with the Rev. Arthur Kingdon, Rector, officiating. Burial will be Friday, April 12 in the family lot at Greenwood Union Cemetery in Rye, New York. Friends were invited to call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

Mr. Robert J. "Bob" Ludewig, 55, of Loveland, Colorado, died Monday, April 8, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Ludewig was born August 6, 1946 in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota to the late Vertalis Ludewig and Emma Treml Ludewig. He was also preceded in death by an infant sister.
He was a division manager, working for Schwans, frozen food sales, for 20 years. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marines Corps, having served during the Vietnam Conflict. He moved to Loveland, Colorado from Fort Collins Colorado in 1994. He had moved to Fort Collins in 1989 from Minnesota. He was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church, Loveland, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are his wife, Donna M. Ludewig of Loveland; son, Keith Ludewig and wife Corina of Newnan, Ga.; daughter, Shanna Ludewig of Arlington, Tenn.; grandsons, Matthew and Christopher "Chris" Ludewig of Newnan; brothers, Leo Ludewig and wife Bernice of Comfrey, Minnesota, and Donald Ludewig and wife Kathy of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota; sisters, Betty Doran and husband Duane of Everly, Iowa, and Linda Braulick and husband Lester of New Ulm, Minnesota; mother-in-law, Marie Sprenger of New Ulm, Minnesota.

Mrs. Yates was born August 17, 1907 in Randolph County, Alabama, daughter of the late James William Brumlow and the late Josephine Hammock Brumlow. She was a member of Highland Baptist Church in Hogansville and was the wife of the late Rev. Harvie B. Yates.

Mr. Floyd R. Horsley, 84, of Horsley Drive, Carrollton, Ga., died Monday, April 8, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Horsley, a native od Carroll County, was born August 23, 1917, son of the late George R. Horsley and Dicie Huckeba Horsley. He was co-owner of Carrollton Hardware and a member of Cross Plains Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Sticher Horsley; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Judy Horsley, Carrollton, Daryl and Andrea Horsley, Carrollton; brother and sister-in-law, Euell and Jean Horsley, Carrollton; sister, Christine H., Rigsby, Newnan; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Birtus Horsley and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Virginia Jarrard
Mrs. Sara Virginia Trammell Jarrard, 87, of Gainesville, Ga. died Sunday, April 7, 2002 at the Bell-Minor Home in Gainesville following an extended illness.
Mrs. Jarrard was born Jan. 19, 1915 on her family's farm in Coweta County near Luthersville. She was the youngest child of Robert Toombs "Bob" and Sallie E. McGahee Trammell. Her ancestors included early settlers of both Coweta and Meriwether counties.
Mrs. Jarrard received a bachelor of arts degree in education from the University of Georgia. She taught in several Georgia public schools, including Alvaton-Carmel High School in Meriwether County. She lived most of her life in Gainesville where she taught at Airline School and New Holland Elementary School. From 1956 until her retirement in 1977, she taught communications skills and human relations at Hall County Vocational School.
Mrs. Jarrard was the widow of Bonnell Charles Jarrard. She was a longtime member of New Holland Baptist Church.
A funeral is today, April 10, at 11 a.m. at New Holland Baptist Church at Gainesville with Rev. Mike Taylor and Dr. Bruce Morgan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Gainesville.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Nancy Jarrard of Gainesville; daughter-in-law, Janet Jarrard of Nashville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Amanda Blyss Jarrard, Joe and Susan Jarrard, Jamie Jarrard, Kevin and Kelly Jarrard, Jason and Amy Coffee; devoted friend, Mrs. Ethel Pierce; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
