Mrs. Dolores Mae Chambers Wright, 55, of Newnan, Ga., died May 17, 2002.

Her parents Curtis Clinton and Virginia Mae (Leech) Chambers and a brother William Clay Chambers preceded Mrs. Wright in death.

Surviving are her husband, Jimmie Wilson Wright; daughters, Donna Marie Smith and Setphanie Anne Wright; sons-in-law, Randall Beard and Jason David Smith; six grandchildren, Courtney Kristine Price, Parker Christian Smith, Dustin Paul Caldwell, Alexandria Cole Smith, Chandler Hayden Smith and Caitlin Anne Beard; brother, Curtis Clinton Chambers Jr. of Philadelphia; two aunts in Virginia.

The family will receive friends at the home, 145 Clingstone Cr., Newnan, Ga. Wednesday, May 22, 2002 from 6-9 p.m.

A memorial service will be Thursday, May 23 at 1 p.m. at Cokes Chapel United Methodist Church.

Mr. James Thomas Ayers, 82, of Berry Avenue, Newnan, Ga., died Sunday, May 19, 2002 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center in Newnan.

Mr. Ayers was born September 30, 1919 in Coweta County to Walter Ayers and Tiny Music Ayers. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of the Lutheran Church.

A funeral will be at Higgins at Hillcrest Chapel Tuesday, May 21 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Russell Johnson and Rev. Willard Dean officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be David Cook, Ray Hammond, Tim Frasier, Joey Rainwater, Jamie Ayers and Matt Ayers.

Suriving are his wife, Elaine Willard Ayers; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Brenda Ayers of Newnan; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Ellis Frasier of Newnan; brother, Barry Ayers of Newnan; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Blanche Geneva Brown Crockett, 91, of Roopville, Ga., died May 17, 2002 at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.

She was remembered at a funeral Sunday, May 19, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Welcome United Methodist Church with Terry Harper and Rev. Jimmy Drew officiating.

Music was provided by Ginger Stutts and Leesa Stutts Conthran.

Pallbearers were Chris Crockett, Mark Crockett, David Crockett, Jeff North, Eric Jordan and Gary Clifford. Burial was in Welcome Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Crockett was born in Randolph County, Alabama, June 18, 1910 to the late Will Brown and Hattie Smith Brown.

Mrs. Crockett devoted her life to the care and nurturing of her family. She was a faithful member of the Welcome United Methodist Church where in past years she was a member of the Women's Missionary Society and taught Sunday School.

Surviving are two daughters, Rebecca Jordan of Roopville, Ga. and Vickie North of Carrollton, Ga.; son, Ross Crockett of Roopville, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Betty Crockett of Carrollton, Ga.; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mora Johnson of Franklin, Ga., and Myrle Webb of Roopville, Ga.; brother, Clyde Brown of Carrollton, Ga.

She was preceded in death by husband, Willie James Crockett; and son, Ralph Crockett.

Mrs. Barbara Bartlett Massengale, 64, of Hogansville, Ga., died Sunday, May 19, 2002 at Newnan Hospital.

A funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21 in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Rick McMahan will officiate.

Born March 4, 1938 in Hogansville, Mrs. Massengale was the daughter of the late J. W. and Ora Lee Caldwell Bartlett. She lived in Hogansville most of her life, was a former owner of the Pizza Villa in LaGrange, and was a member of Springhill Baptist Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Cindy Hubbard, Janet Lynn Hunt, and Memory Lea Freiberg, all of Hogansville; son, John W. Clontz of Franklin; four brothers, J. W. Bartlett Jr. of Marshallville, Jamie E. Bartlett of LaGrange, Sherrell G. Bartlett of Griffin, and Barry W. Bartlett of Hogansville; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Greg Flournoy; a granddaughter, Virginia Lynn Flournoy; and a brother, Roger Bartlett.

Chaplain Colonel Linwood "Steve" Stevenson
Chaplain Colonel Linwood "Steve" Stevenson (U.S. Army Retired) of Union City, Ga., died May 18, 2002.

In addition to being retired from the Army, Rev. Stevenson was a retired Methodist minister, having served conferences in Florida, Wyoming, Colorado, Alabama and Virginia.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Jean Stevenson; daughters, Linell Rowland of Emory, Virginia, Lucy Ameigh of Charlotte, North Carolina; sons, Linwood P. Stevenson of Knoxville, Tennessee, Thomas L. Stevenson of Dallas, Texas, Dave Waksman Sr. of Sharpsburg, Don Waksman of Boca Raton, Florida, Dan Waksman of Sharpsburg; sisters, Elizabeth Collins, Virginia; Berkeley Stonebaker of Union City; 12 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be Tuesday, May 21 at 3 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church with remains placed in state at 2 p.m. Rev. Mark Outlaw officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.

Family was receiving friends Sunday and Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. John Earl Biggerstaff
Mr. John Earl Biggerstaff, 62, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, May 18, 2002, at Portsbridge Hospice in Riverdale.

Mr. Biggerstaff was born in 1939 to the late Earle and Dovie Biggerstaff in Converse, S.C., where he grew up and attended local schools. After school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as a combat engineer, responsible for disposing of un-detonated ordnance. After leaving he army, he moved to East Point where he owned and operated the Shell Station until the property was bought by Marta. He retired from Colonial Baking Company where he had been a shop steward and driver, and a member of the Teamsters Union, Local 728. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Cato.

A grave-side service with military honors will be held Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at 1 p.m. Central Time at Forth Mitchell National Cemetery in Seale, Ala. The Rev. Thomas Shannon will officiate.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Helen Biggerstaff; daughter and sons-in-law Lisa and Jim Niles of Fayetteville, Beverly Perkins of Forest Park, and Vickie and John Jackson of Land of Lakes, Fla.; son, Brian Biggerstaff of Spartanburg, S.C.; sister, Hazel Adair of Spartanburg; six grandchildren one great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cleveland Lewis Daniel
Mr. Cleveland Lewis Daniel, 69, of Decatur, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Daniel was born Aug. 7, 1932, in Olive Branch, La., to the late Alex and Anzella Smith-Daniel. He went to school in Louisiana and met and married Onita Stewart, with whom he had seven children. Mr. Daniel worked for over 20 years with the Greyhound Bus Company in New Orleans, La. and worked for George Patterson Pontiac for over 10 years.

He was preceded in death by his son, Gregory Daniel, daughter-in-law Renette Daniel, brother, Ronald James Daniel, and three grandchildren, Hope, Kechan and Robin Daniel.

A funeral was held Saturday, May 18, 202, at the Bethesda Temple of Apostolic Faith in Decatur. Bishop Stewart Reese, Jr., officiated, and burial was in Kennedy Memorial Gardens.

Surviving are his sons, Cleveland Jr. and his wife Maida, Kenneth, Sterling and His wife Yasha, Brian and his wife Tracy, and Corey Matthew, all of New Orleans, La., and Michael and his wife Yvonne of Dallas, Texas; daughters Iris Stewart and her husband Michael of Atlanta, Jocelyn Daniel of Baton Rouge, La., Linda Daniel, Lisa Daniel, Catrice Matthew, and Denise Washington and her husband Paul, all of New Orleans; sister Rita Jean Daniel (Williams) of Baton Rouge; brother Willis Hayes, Sr. and his wife Vesimae of New Orleans; uncle John Thomas of Baton Rouge; and two special cousins, Ella Mae Frazier of Baton Rouge and Margarite Hughes of Tuscaloosa, Al.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. J.W. Young, 61, died Friday, May 17, 2002, at Emory-Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Born Jan. 2, 1941 in Anniston, Ala., Mr. Young was a Marine veteran and a service man for Taylor Gas.

Funeral services for Mr. Young will be held a McKoon Funeral Home today beginning at 2 p.m., with Reverend David Ramey officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Church Cemetery in Heflin, Ala.

Mrs. Gertrude Strickland Madaris, 92, of East Washington Street, Newnan, died Thursday, May 16, 2002 at Newnan Hospital.

She was born August 9, 1909 in Meriwether County, daughter of John Strickland and Janie Strickland. She was a retired from the shipping department of William L Bonnell Co. in Newnan.

A funeral will be at McKoon's chapel Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. The Rev. Leonard Ezell will officiate. Burial will be in Pitts Cemetery on Gordon Road.

Mrs. Martha C. Nix
Mrs. Martha C. Nix, 74, of Newnan, Ga., died at Newnan Hospital Thursday, May 16, 2002.

Mrs. Nix was born in Godfrey, Ga. in 1927 to Herschel and Leora Crump. She finished high school in Clarksville, Ga. and then attended Piedmont College. After college she met and married her husband, Mr. Charlie Nix, whose job took them all over the Southeast United States. They settled in Lakeland, Fla., where they lived 19 years before moving to Newnan. An accountant by trade, she retired from Skiptronics in Newnan. Mrs. Nix was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Sharpsburg, Ga. She was a special and loving lady who was very sensitive in her dealings with others. She truly believed in treating others with kindness and sincerity.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Mr. Charlie Nix, Newnan; son, Charles L. Nix and his wife Suzan of Hogansville, Ga.; daugher, Denise Ward and her husband Skip of Newnan; sister, Winnie Lee Masters of Knoxville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, many friends.

Pallbearers are Charles Nix Jr., Chris Ward, Tommy Youngblood and Tim Baker.

Mr. Ed Brown, 68, of West Grantville Road, Grantville, Ga., died Thursday, May 16, 2002 at his residence.

Mr. Brown was born October 3, 1933 in Coweta County, Ga. He worked in manufacturing at William L Bonnell Co. in Newnan. Mr. and Mrs. Brown served as foster parents for Coweta County for more than 20 years.

Mr. Ira Wylie Knox Jr.
Mr. Ira Wylie Knox Jr., 59, of Sharpsburg, Ga., will be remembered at a funeral Saturday, May 18, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Parrott Funeral Home, Fairburn, Ga.

Mr. Knox was born in Chester, South Carolina, July 2, 1942 to the late Ira W. and Margaret Proctor Knox. He fought a two-year battle with cancer.

He was raised a Master Mason in College Park Lodge No. 454 in 1971 and was created a Noble of Yaarab Shrine Temple in 1972. He went on to work in South Fulton Shrine Club so that he could participate in the charitable work. He was elected president of South Fulton in 1989, and served his club with pride. He was a member of Turin Lodge No. 337. He served a Worthy Patron in 2001-2002 of the Turin Order of the Eastern Star. He was an active member of Turin United Methodist Church and the chancel choir. He was a charter member of the Gentleman of the Creek as well as the Ridge Runners.

He worked for Delta Airlines 27 years, retiring as an inspector in the Wheel and Brake Shop. He was an avid Nascar fan, his dream was to make all the races on the Nascar circuit. He was often called "The Professor of Nascarology" by his friends for his knowledge of racing. Along with his love of racing he loved camping with his extended family "The Beach Bunch." He took great pride in his family, was a faithful husband, wonderful father, loving "PawPaw" to his grandchildren and a loving "Bubba" to his sister.

Rev. Scott Brown will officiate at the funeral Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in College Park with Turin Masonic Lodge 337 F&AM officiating. Pallbearers will be Mitch Cooke, Roy Ellis, Richard Hardy, Dick Beatty, Don Daily, Larry Fields, Bill Stoots, John Arnold, David Segrest and Blackman Gilliam.

Mr. Aaron L. Meltzer, 81, of Newnan, Ga., died Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Newnan Hospital.

Mr. Meltzer was born in LaGrange, Ga., May 4, 1921. He was retired supervisor of the physical plant at Emory University. A veteran, he served in the United States Navy.

Miss Wohlers was born March 4, 1984, in Austell, Cobb Co., Ga. She was a computer technician with A-Plus Technologies.

Mr. William Horace Bowles died May 12, 2002 at his residence. The family may be contacted at the home of his brother Rev. and Mrs. H. A. Bowles, 29 Pratt St., Newnan, Ga.

A funeral will be Friday, May 17 at 1 p.m. at Sellers-Smith R. W. S. Memorial Chapel with Rev. Samuel D. Obie Sr. officiating, assisted by Pastor Virgil Smith, Marshall Shuford and Minister Sharon Wilkes. Burial in Eastview Cemetery. Relatives will serve as pallbearers and flower ladies.

The cortege will assemble on the day of the service at noon. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday evening from 7-8 p.m.

Mr. Bowles was born June 20, 1936 to Hugh and Lavada Bowles, who preceded him in death. He was the eighth of thirteen children, ten of whom preceded him in death.

He worked in construction for many years. He enjoyed fishing and landscaping. He also enjoyed telling "tall tales" with family and friends.

Surviving are devoted companion, Mrs. Oppie Allison; children, Mr. and Mrs. James Johnson (Debbie), Mr. and Mrs. William D. Mrs. Georgia W. Pitman, 79, of Burch Avenue, Newnan, Ga., died May 13, 2002 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.

Ms. Ruby Sherer Preston
Ms. Ruby Sherer Preston died May 10, 2002.

Ms. Preston was born Jan. 31, 1926. She was born and raised in Amarillo, Texas. Her parents were Ernest J. Sherer and Mamie Kriling Sherer of Amarillo. She graduated from Amarillo High School and attended Amarillo College. She worked many years for the United States Civil Service at Amarillo Air Force Base and later for the Amarillo Speech and Hearing Center.

A funeral was Tuesday, May 14 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Jeff Halenza officiating at Holly Hill Cemetery in Fairburn, Ga.

Surviving are her sister, Ruth E. Phillips (Edward L.) of Newnan, Ga.; aunts, Mrs. Helen Collins and Mrs. Alice Sherer of Amarillo, Texas; nieces, Viki Kendzierski of Newnan, Syndi Phillips of Atlanta, Sharon Wilkerson of Richmond, Texas, Rebecca Cooter of San Jose, Ca.; and nephew Wm. Baymiller of No. Highlands, Ca.; also great nieces and nephews.

Lillian Abigail Spradlin, ten-month-old daughter of Luke and Crystal Gray Spradlin of Hogansville, Ga., died Monday, May 13, 2002 at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, May 16 in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Jesse W. Hughes and the Rev. Johnny Hughes will officiate, and burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.

Surviving in addition to her parents are sister, Elexis Spradlin of Hogansville; grandparents, Joseph and Peggy Spradlin of Hogansville, Rodney Gray of Douglasville, and Robin Gray of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; great-grandparents, Henry Gable of Hogansville, Don and Shirley Gray of Punta Gorda, Fla., and Mildred Spradlin of Newnan.

Mr. Joseph Ortega
Mr. Joseph Robert Ortega, 71, of Beaubrook Lane, Sharpsburg died Sunday, May 12, 2002 at Windy Hill Hospital.

Mr. Ortega was born March 13, 1931 in New York City. He was a retired warehouse supervisor and a U. S. Army veteran.

The funeral service will be Thursday, May 16, at 1 p.m. at Cornerstone United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Campbell officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Ann Ortega of Sharpsburg; daughters, Charlotte Farrell of Sharpsburg, Lynne Schwab of Patchogue, N. Y.; son, Joseph Ortega of Sharpsburg; sister, Nancy Small of Turnersville, N. J.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Virginia S. Satterthwaite, 77, of Tarboro, N.C. died Sunday, May 12, 2002.

The funeral service will be held today, May 14, at 11 a.m. at St. James United Methodist Church in Tarboro. Survivors include her son, Lisle Millard of Newnan and his wife, Cindy.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia S. Satterthwaite Scholarship Fund, St. James United Methodist Church, Tarboro, N. C. 27886.

Mrs. Lillie Mae Shepherd
Mrs. Lillie Mae Shepherd, 84 of Rock Mills, Ala. died Sunday, May 12, 2002 at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke, Ala.

Mrs. Shepherd was born March 26, 1918 in Chambers County, Ala., daughter of the late Will and Emma Jane Cosley Duffey. A resident of Rock Mills since 1999, she lived in Mountville for many years.

She was a member of Calvary Family Worship Center in Mountville.

The funeral service will be today, May 14, at 4:30 p.m. at Calvary Family Worship Center with the Rev. Carl Knowles officiating. Interment will follow at Mountville Cemetery.

Several cousins survive.

Mr. James VanDrew
Mr. James VanDrew, 61, of Sharpsburg died Monday, May 13, 2002 at his residence.

Mr. VanDrew was born June 14, 1940 in Iowa. He was in the plaster and building business.

The funeral will be held at Moreland United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 16, at 6 p.m. The Rev. Patrick Jansen will officiate.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Ann Rider VanDrew of Sharpsburg; sons, David and Christy VanDrew of Newnan, Michael VanDrew of Sharpsburg; and five sisters and one brother, all of California.

Mr. James 'Bud' Benefield
Mr. James 'Bud' Benefield, 52, of Franklin, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. today in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville, with the Reverend Tony Brown officiating.

The family will receive friends today from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Benefield was born Aug. 31, 1949, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, son of the late William Louie Benefield and Mrs. Lillian Clifton Benefield of Franklin. He had lived in the Franklin area for the past twenty years and was employed as a truck driver and mechanic.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include one son, Timothy Benefield of LaGrange; one daughter, Christina Gay Bowser of Summerfield, Fla., a step-daughter, Sandy Braun of North Carolina; four sisters, Betty Laster of Five Points, Ala., Sue Bradley of Brandon, Fla., Frances Kemp of Plant City, Fla., and Daisy Arnold of Bethel, Tenn.; three brothers, Richard Benefield and Charles Benefield Sr., both of Franklin, and Clyde Benefield of LaGrange; and 10 grandchildren

Mrs. Robertha Franklin Preston
Mrs. Robertha Franklin Preston, 87, of Newnan, Georgia, died early Saturday morning, May 11, 2002, at Starcrest of Newnan. "Roby" as she was known to her many friends, was born in Medford, Mass. to Harry Jennings Sickels and MaryAnn Lucas Sickels. She graduated from State University of New York at Cobleskill and also attended Curry School of Expression in Boston, Mass. Her life was busy and demanding as she cared for a family and worked and participated in community affairs.

After college, Roby worked for General Electric in Schenectady, New York. Later, after marrying Leigh Preston, she and her husband helped operate and manage Preston Hardware in Oxford, New York. She enjoyed attending conventions and buying shows. Roby and her husband, Leigh, also raised and sold blueberries on Route 12 in Oxford for many years. Late in life, she worked in sales at the Carrol Anne Dress Shops in Norwich, New York.

Leigh and Roby were married on Oct. 2, 1949 in Binghamton, New York and resided in Oxford, New York throughout their marriage. After their retirement, they moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and later she moved to Orlando, Fla. In 1994, Mrs. Preston returned to Oxford, New York to resume her old friendships. In year 2000, she moved to Newnan to be near her daughter, Maryleigh Preston-McClure.

As an active member of the Oxford and Norwich community, Roby was a long-time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Oxford Book Club, Garden Club, Birthday Club, and Business Professional Women. Roby enjoyed traveling, reading and painting.

Mrs. Preston was preceded in death by her husband, Leigh Wardyn Preston, in 1985 after 36 years of marriage. She is survived by two sons; Bruce and Lisa Preston of Portland, and Keith G. Preston of Tucson, Arizona; two daughters, Maryleigh Preston-McClure and Robert McClure of Grantville, Gail Preston-Harris and Tom Harris of Richmond; four grandchildren, Daniel Preston, Jessica Leigh Preston, Elizabeth and Christina Harris; and several cousins in New York and Pennsylvania.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Oxford at a later date. A graveside service with family and friends will be at Warren Tenbrock Cemetery, with father Bruce McDuffie officiating.
