Mr. John Atkinson Flannery
Mr. John Atkinson Flannery, 91, of Atlanta and Newnan, Ga., died Sunday, July 21, 2002 at his home in Newnan following a short illness.
Mr. Flannery was born May 12, 1911 in Newnan, where he lived his early life. He was the son of Frank Flannery, a Newnan jeweler and former cowboy, and Henrietta Bailey, a school teacher in Newnan. John was the proud grandson of John Lundie Bailey, a farmer and former Confederate soldier in Newnan's 7th Georgia Infantry during the Civil War. His father died when he was 11 years old from an illness contracted while tending to his family during the great flu epidemic in 1918.
Upon graduation from Newnan High School he worked various jobs during the Great Depression and eventually attended classes but never graduated from Tampa University in FL. In the 1938 he became an Assistant Administrator of the federal government's WPA, in Washington, D.C., where he married his first wife, Peggy Lambe. He returned to Georgia with the WPA to help find worthy employment projects for fellow Georgians. Two projects he administered of significance to Georgia were initiating funding of the state historical marker program to place historic markers throughout the state and organizing a project to copy and centralize all local court records at the state level.
He attended the Atlanta Law School, graduated in 1942 and was admitted to the bar shortly before he left for service with the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. He served in the Central Pacific, and participated in an number of island invasions, where he helped build airfields on the edge of the invasion beaches. He also served as a military defense attorney in the units to which he was assigned. Discharged as a captain, he returned to Newnan in July 1945, and lived at the Bailey family house, "Up Home," on Poplar Road. After the war he entered private business and operated Buckhead Glass, a company that provided various glass products to industry and picture framing services to the general public.
He married Lilly Cates (deceased) in 1946 and lived in Morningside Heights in Atlanta until he returned home to Newnan three months ago.
As a youth on the Bailey family farms on Poplar Road, he learned to love the outdoors, and became a sportsman throughout his life. He traveled widely in Georgia and the United States fishing and hunting. For many years he and his wife owned a boat on Lake Lanier where they spent much of their free time. He was especially accomplished at "fly- tying" to make his own fishing lures and was also was an accomplished poker player who used the internet to hone his skills until shortly before his death.
Always in love with the thought of being able to fly, Mr. Flannery learned to fly an airplane late in life. Satisfied at the accomplishment of soloing when he was 75 years old, he ended his flying career because, "The skies really don't need another 75-year-old pilot!"
Throughout his life Mr. Flannery took great pride and satisfaction with being part of the Bailey family, one of Coweta County's pioneer families. The family homes that his grandfather and grandmother were born in both still exist on Poplar Road. He was instrumental in providing much of the Bailey family history for the restoration of both Catalpa Plantation and the Bailey House. After retirement, at his small home on White Oak Creek on Poplar Road, he was always the consummate and generous host to his large circle of family and friends.
