Mr. Jamie E. Bowen, 18, died Monday, July 8, at Atlanta Medical Center as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana January 4, 1984. He was a 2002 graduate of Newnan High School. Sports were a large part of Jamie's life, and he reveled in his enthusiastic participation in softball, fishing, track, or any water sports.
Surviving are his father, David Bowen; his mother, Cynthia Grable; sister, Rachel Kay Bowen; and grandmothers, Eleanor Martin and Charlene Pittman.
A funeral will be Thursday, July 11, at 4 p.m. at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Leonard Ezell officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Ollie Hightower Calhoun of Atlanta will be remembered at a funeral Thursday, July 11, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Summer Hill Baptist Church in Moreland, Ga.

She was born February 13, 1936 in Rome, Ga. to the late Timothy Hightower and Rosa Upshaw Echols. She lived in Atlanta the majority of her life.

Mr. Richard T. "Dick" Hunter Jr.
Mr. Richard T. "Dick" Hunter Jr. of Moreland died Tuesday evening, July 9, in Peachtree City at Southland Nursing Home.
A native of Coweta County, he was born November 14, 1919 to Richard Thomas Hunter Sr. and his wife Jennie Haynie Hunter. His wife, Wyvette Shelnutt Hunter, preceded him in death in 1997. A veteran of World War II, he served in the Army in the 100th Engineering Company building air landing strips in Okinawa and Alaska. He was a member of the White Oak Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. He was also a 50-year Mason at the Moreland lodge.
Surviving are his children, Harry Thomas Hunter, James Lee Hunter, Roy A. Hunter and David Bryant Hunter; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be Thursday, July 11 at 2 p.m. at White Oak ARP Church with the Rev. Tom Shoger and Rev. Winton Skinner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Josiephine Strickland of Newnan will be remembered at a funeral Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church in the Corinth Community.

Mrs. Strickland was born April 15, 1913 in Coweta County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Ed Baker. She died July 7, 2002.
She was a member of the Bright Star Baptist Church in Carrollton, Ga. She was the mother of 13 children, four of whom preceded her in death.
She is the widow of McKinley Pritchett and Edgar Strickland.

Mrs. Rosa Clerk-Wortham was the daughter of the late Albert and Ammie Wells, born in Coweta County, Georgia, April 16, 1910. She joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church at an early age and remained a faithful member until her health failed.
Mrs. Clerk-Wortham was married to Walter Clerk and they had one child, Gene Autry Clerk, who preceded her in death, as did her husband and nephew, William West Sr., and grandson Jerome Clerk.
Later in life she married Sawyer Wortham, who also preceded her in death.

Mr. John Alvin "Junebug" Godfrey Jr. died Monday, July 8, 2002 at his residence in Greenville, Ga.
He was born August 23, 1949 in the Primrose Community of Meriwether County, Ga. to the late Mr. and Mrs. John and Mable Godfrey Sr.
He joined the Rocky Mount Bethel Baptist Church at an early age, where he served faithfully until his death. He attended and graduated from the Greenville Consolidated High School in 1968.
He married Annie Rene Hill Feb. 27, 1970. They had two children, Anthony (Tony) Godfrey and Constance (Connie) Godfrey.
Mr. Godfrey was well known by many. He was employed at J.C. Penney Distribution Center in Forest Park, Ga. until he had a vision to start his own company, J & A Transport Co. His business was a success until his health failed and he could no longer work.
A funeral will be Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at 1:30 p.m. at Rocky Mount Bethel Baptist Church in Luthersville, Ga. with Rev. Kenneth Curtis, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Phillip Baker, Rev. A. L. Birts, Rev. Lowinston Jackson and Evangelist Wilkes.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Rocky Mount Bethel Board of Deacons, on which Mr. Godfrey served. Active pallbearers will be the Class of 1968.

Mrs. Charlotte Walker Moore of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Heard County, Ga., was remembered at a funeral Friday, July 5, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Tom Stutts and Son Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin, Ga., with the Rev. Talmadge Chandler officiating.
Pallbearers were Bill Walker, Doug Hammond, Rick Hammond, James Walls and Jerry Walker. Burial was in the Bowdon City Cemetery.
Mrs. Moore was born in Eavleton, Fla., Feb. 22, 1914 to the late Joseph Arthur Walker and Myrtie Mae Penticost Walker. She died in Tampa, Fla., June 29, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaines Moore; brother, Graydon Walker; sisters, Beryl Bozeman and Erlene Smith. She was a Baptist by faith.
In her younger years she was an employee of The Atlanta Casket Company and after the death of her husband moved back to Heard County where she was employed by the Tottle Tike Baby Clothes Manufacturing Company, a job she loved because of the many friends that she had while working there.
Surviving are a sister, Ruby Hammond of Flushing, Mich.; two brothers, Reese Walker of LaGrange, Ga.; and Joseph A. Walker of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Marvin Thomas Ayers
Mr. Marvin Thomas Ayers, 58, of Tunnel Hill, Georgia, formerly of Newnan, Ga., died at his home July 1, 2002.
Mr. Ayers was born in 1944 to Grady and Lillie Mae Ayers in Coweta County where he grew up and attended Newnan High School. Mr. Ayers served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam and served as an honor guard at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D. C. After completing his military obligation, he moved to Dalton, Ga. where he worked as an office equipment technician for Lee Office Supply Company. He spent his leisure time hunting and fishing all over Georgia and played softball in the Dalton area.
Mr. Ayers is preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Lillie Mae Ayers; two brothers, Raymond and Henry Ayers; and a sister, Joyce Bailey.
Surviving are two daughters, Sheri Luann Philyaw of Tunnel Hill, Georgia and Brittney Nichole Ayers of Nashville, Tenn.; two brothers, Jimmy Ayers of Smith Station, Ala., and Howard Eugene Ayers of Hogansville, Ga.; two sisters, Ruby Lee of Grantville, Ga. and Hazel Bradley of Phenix City, Ala.; three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Holbrook was born December 17, 1920 in Defuniak Springs, Fla. She was retired and served for many years as Coweta County Clerk of Superior Court. She was preceded in death by Leonard S. Wilson Jr.

Mrs. Hazel F. King, 89, of Sebastian, Florida, died suddenly July 2, 2002 at Sebastian River Medical Center.
Mrs. King was born December 17, 1912 in Kauai, Hawaii and moved to Sebastian nine years ago from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Miami, Fla. where she served as Sunday School superintendent for many years.

Sgt. William Joseph Mines Sr.
Sgt. William Joseph Mines Sr., 81, Atlanta, died July 2, 2002 at South Fulton Medical Center.
A funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hines Memorial chapel with burial at Southview Cemetery.
Mr. Mines was born October 15, 1920, in Crawfordville, Ga. to the late Jospeh and Edna Mines. He had two sisters, Mary and Pricilla.
He moved to Atlanta in 1943 where he enlisted in the United States Army. While in the Army Sgt. Mines obtained an Associates Degree and many accolaids. In 1945 he married the late Mary Paul White, who died in 1953 in Kobe, Japan, while William was on a tour of duty. In 1955 he married the late Johnnie Mae Lee, who died in 1996 while in Atlanta. Sgt. Mines served 30 years in the military.
Surviving are six children, Edna, Debbie, Joann, William Mines III, Gregory and Lisa Mines; seven granddaughters; one grandson; four great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Lex Brian Steen, 45, of Pine Haven Court, Carrollton, Ga., died suddenly Monday, July 1, 2002.
He was born July 1, 1957 in Anniston, Alabama. He was a 14-year veteran of Print Pack in Villa Rica and was a press operator.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mr.Henry Lanier Steen.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Kathy Vinnacombe Steen of Carrollton; mother, Mrs. Dorothy C. Hubbard of Anniston, AL; brothers, Max Lanier Steen of Heflin, AL, Don Alan Steen and Jake Pelham Hubbard, both of Oxford, AL, and several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass was conducted Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Carrollton, Ga. with Father Tim Gadziala and Father Joseph Morris officiating. Mrs. Charlotte Walker Moore, formerly of Franklin, Ga., died Saturday, June 29, 2002, in Lakeland, Fla.
She was one of eight children born to J. A. Walker Sr. and Myrtle Pentecost Walker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gaines Moore; brother, Graydon Walker; sisters, Beryl Bozeman and Erlene Smith.
In early married life Mrs. Moore was employed at Atlanta Casket Company for many years. Following the death of her husband, she became a resident of Heard County living on Highwy 27 and working for "Baby Clothes" in Franklin, Ga.
Mrs. Moore had a deep compassion for loved ones, and became a caretaker for brother Graydon Walker and sister Beryl Bozeman.
Among survivors are nephew, Bill and Anne Walker and niece Betty Jo Walls of LaGrange; nieces Nelda Reis and Cheryl Cook of Lakeland, Fla.
A funeral will be Friday, July 5 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Stutts Funeral Home in Franklin with the Rev. Talmadge Chandler officiating. Burial will be in the family plot in Bowdon, Ga.

Mrs. Edna Newman Miller Walker
Mrs. Edna Newman Miller Walker, 67, of Sharpsburg, Ga., died Tueday, July 2, 2002 at home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Walker was born March 21, 1935 near Malvern in Geneva County, Alabama, and lived the early years of her life there. Upon graduation from Slocomb High School in 1953 she attended Troy State University, graduating in 1956. After teaching physical education at Druid Hills High School in Decatur, GA, she served in the U.S. Armyand graduated from the Army Physical Therapy Program as a first lieutenant. She was assigned to Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D. C. and to Ireland Army Hospital at Ft. Knox, KY. She served four and one half years and was discharged with the rank of captain. She has lived in West Germany, Ft. Benning and Columbus, GA, as a military dependent, Starke, FL, where whe owned and operated a physical therapy business, and returning to Columbus co-founded Allied Rehab Associates. Since retirement she has lived in Sharpsburg, GA, with her husband, Robert K. Walker of San Diego, CA.
She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and affiliated with Peachtree City United Methodist Church in Peachtree City, GA. Mrs. Walker also served as an English teacher with English Language Institute in China for two summers and a church building program in Honduras. Mrs. Walker was also certified as a teacher of the Evangelism Explosion program from Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Florida.
Surviving are her husband, Robert K. Walker of Sharpsburg; daughter, Marie Elizabeth Miller Powell of Charlotte, N.C.; son, John Philip Miller II and Suzanne of Columbus, GA; three grandchildren, John Powell and Trevor Powell of Charlotte, N.C., Madison Miller of Collumbus, GA; step-son, R. K. Wlker Jr. of San Diego, CA; two step-daughters, Vicki Walker of Easton, MD and Kate Walker of Tumwater, WA; two sisters, Helen N. Eflein of Dundee, FL, Martha N. Mr. Elbert Eugene (Gene) Allen, 69, of Brooks, Ga., died Sunday, June 30, 2002 at Newnan Hospital.

Born July 18, 1933 in LaGrange, Mr. Allen was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War. He had lived at Brooks for the past 30 years and was retired from General Motors.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Cathy Phillips of Senoia and Miss Lisa Allen of Fairburn; son, Tony Allen of Meansville; his mother, Mrs. Mary Allen of Hogansville; sister, Mrs. Glenda Friend, also of Hogansville; brother, Donald Allen of Roanoke, Virginia; and nine grandchildren.

Col. Louis Ernest Long
Col. Louis Ernest Long, 82, of Texas, Ga., died June 27, 2002.
He was born August 18, 1919 in Belleville, Illinois. As a boy, Col. Long was an outstanding marksman, winning the Missouri state rifle competition at age 18. He entered the Army February 27, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri, and graduated from Armored Officer Candidate School in 1944 at Fort Knox, Ky. He served as Commanding Officer, U.S. Army Combat Development Command Agency, Fort Gordon, Ga.; Assistant Chief of Staff for G-5 Operations, Headquarters, First Corps, Korea; Chief, Promotion Branch, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel; Battalion Commander, 3rd Armored Cavalry, Fort Meade, Md. and numerous other assignments in Europe and the U.S. His decorations include two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Korean Presidential Citation, the Joint Service Commendation Medal and numerous other campaign and service ribbons.
Col. Long retired in 1972 to the old Mickle farm in Texas, Ga. He was very active in the community. He was a member of the Lions Club, having served as president. He was very involved in Prospect Church, teaching Sunday school, organizing homecoming events, establishing the Cemetery Fund, and designing the fellowship hall. Col. Long was a devoted husband and a loving father and grandfather. He was a man of honor, integrity and love. He put the needs of others above his own and lives on through the many lives he touched.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce M. Long; children, Louis Long, Louise Lynch and Karen Long; and grandchildren, Brian Lynch, Todd Lynch, Christina Long, Gena Rutledge and James Rhodes.
A funeral will be Tuesday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at Prospect United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Jolly officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Mae Dell Jacobs, 60, of Newnan, died Friday, June 28, 2002, at her home.
Mrs. Jacobs was born Jan. 11, 1942, in Newnan, to the late Samuel and Irene Harmon Pitts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Jacobs.
A grave-side service will be held Monday, July 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Sharpsburg Baptist Church Cemetery.
Surviving are her son, Roy Wayne Jacobs and his wife Tiffany; and her sister, Christine Hannah.

Mr. Ernest George Newman, Sr.
Mr. Ernest George Newman, Sr., 72, of Newnan, died Saturday, June 29, 2002 at Kindred Hospital in Atlanta.
A native of Coweta County, Mr. Newman was the son of Sue Belle Brown Newman and the late Ernest Sims Newman.
Mr. Newman served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He retired as southern director for the International Leather Workers Union, AFL-CIO. Mr. Newman was a member of Bible Baptist church for over 25 years, where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael David Newman.
A funeral will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Bible Baptist Church.
Friends and family may call at the funeral home on Monday, July 1, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Surviving are his mother, Sue Belle Brown Newman; wife of 48 years, Ann Kilgore Newman; children, Ernest George Newman, Jr., Alice Newman Dyes, Mark Sims Newman, Christopher Daniel Newman, and Kara Suzann Newman Blanton; sister Barbara Newman Walton; brother, Donald Stephens Newman; 15 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Mr. Walter Lee Ferguson, Jr.
Mr. Walter Lee Ferguson, Jr., 50, of Franklin, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at his home, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mr. Ferguson was born May 20, 1952 in Alhambra, Calif., to the late Walter Lee Ferguson, Sr., and Betty V. Chandler Ferguson. He was a self-employed contractor in the housing industry and served in the Vietnam Conflict.
A memorial service was held Sunday, June 30, at the Tom Stutts and Sons Funeral Home in Franklin.
Surviving are his son, Mathew Bennett of Jonesboro; sister, Darlene Irwin of Knoxville, Tenn., and a host of friends.
