Mr. Nathan G. Knight
Mr. Nathan G. Knight, 66, former state legislator of Newnan, Ga. died Monday, November 4, 2002 after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
Mr. Knight was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knight of LaGrange, Ga. He was preceded in death by his brother, Carey D. Knight, formerly of Newnan.
Mr. Knight attended LaGrange Public Schools, where from an early age he acquired a life long interest in history, law and government. A class leader throughout high school, he was selected as one of two students to represent LaGrange High at Boys' State, and in 1953 represented Georgia at Boys' Nation. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. He was class president, president of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, and was selected for membership in Gridiron, Sphinx and Blue Key honor societies. In 1960 he received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Georgia School of Law.
He served in the United States Army as an infantry officer attached to the Judge Advocate General's staff. He subsequently served five years as a reserve in the Georgia National Guard.
With the exception of time spent in the military, and subsequently in politics, Mr. Knight was engaged in the practice of law in Newnan from 1960 to 1992. Never wanting to specialize, he had a diverse law practice including general corporate law, litigation, family law and real estate. He considered himself a "country lawyer." He also served 16 years as judge of Newnan's Recorders Court and for seven years as State Court Judge.
Mr. Knight believed fervently in the necessity for good government and viewed political life as a calling to public service. First elected in 1970 as a State Representative for Coweta and surrounding counties, he served five terms in the Georgia House of Representatives. During his last two terms he was Majority Whip of the House, responsible for coordinating Democratic Party policy issues on the floor of the Legislature. Among many committee appointments he was on the Appropriations and Policy Committees and held ranking positions on the Education and Rules Committees. He authored numerous pieces of legislation in the areas of education, regional growth (zoning and land use), judicial reform and transportation. A skilled and respected legislator, Mr. Knight was known for his ability to bridge the interests of urban and rural communities. He was the recipient of numerous awards for legislative leadership and was cited by fellow legislators as one of the most effective legislators in the Georgia House.
With a special interest in education issues, he fought for equal state education funding for smaller counties and sought to promote the status and standing of teachers and all educators. He was a member of the Georgia Education Improvement Council and served as a delegate from from the Georgia House to the Southern Regional Education Board.
A leader in local civic affairs, Mr. Knight contributed his time and energies to many organizations and projects. At various times he served as president of the Newnan-Coweta Jaycees, president of the Newnan-Coweta Community Chest and Council, and president of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in creating and served as chairman of the Newnan-Coweta Planning Commission. He also served as a director of the C&S Newnan Bank Board and director of Coweta Youth Resources Inc.
Perhaps one of his most-loved positions was as a long-time director on the board of Coweta Festivals Inc., the organizing group of Powers' Crossroads Festival.
In 1969 he was named Young Man of the Year by the Newnan-Coweta Jaycees. He was a member of the Newnan Rotary Club for more than 30 years.
A long-time supporter of youth sports, he could often be found at ballparks, fields and tennis courts of the county, whether participating himself or watching games or practices where his children were involved. He had a keen interest in the development of and community-building aspects of Little League baseball. He acted as a team manager of his sons' teams, served a term as president of the local league, and for several years served as district administrator over a 14-county area.
Mr. Knight was a dedicated member of the Newnan First United Methodist Church.
