Mrs. Lauralee (Pate) Davis, 56, of East Washington Street, Newnan, Ga., died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at Newnan Hospital in Newnan.
She was born August 2, 1946 in Newnan, daughter of Mildred Rainwater Pate of Newnan and the late Roger Pate. She was the wife of Curtis Davis and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.
The family was receiving friends Monday, Dec. 30, from 6-9 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.
A funeral will be in McKoon's chapel Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. Joe Strickland and Dr. Ray Freeman will officiate and burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park on Roscoe Road, Newnan.
Pallbearers will be Walter Simmons, Bob Dunaway, Morgan Couch, Kenny Orr, Steve Orr, Tony Davis.

Mrs. Mary Will (Little) Kidd, 83, of Buchanan Street, Newnan, Ga., died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at her residence.
Mrs. Kidd was born April 6, 1919 in Oxford, Alabama. She was retired from Newnan Utilities.
The family was receiving friends Monday, Dec. 30, from 4-6 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.
A funeral will be at Newnan Presbyterian Church Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 2 p.m. Dr. Harry Barrow will officiate and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Newnan Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
Members of her Sunday School Class will be honorary pallbearers.

Mrs. Florance Ella (Shadinger) Williams, 91, of Newnan, Ga., died Sunday, December 29, 2002 at Avalon Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Newnan.
She was born in Carroll County, Ga. July 30, 1911 and was retired from West Point Mills. She was a member of Lovejoy Memorial Methodist Church. She is predeceased by her husband, O. C. Williams Sr.
The family was receiving friends at McKoon Funeral Home Monday, Dec. 30, from 7-9 p.m.
A funeral will be at graveside in Oak Hill Cemetery Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 3 p.m. The Rev. Bob Martin will officiate.

Mr. Calvin Ball

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 30, 2002 at St. Peter Baptist Church. Reverend Rufus Smith will officiate, assisted by Reverend Kenneth Curtis, Reverend John Farmer, Reverend Harvey Peeks and Reverend Ronnie Jones.

Interment will follow in Eastview Cemetery.

Mr. Ball was born Oct. 23, 1914 to the late Mr. and Mrs. Marvin and Estella Wood Ball in Heard County. He died Dec. 26, 2002.

Mr. Ball attended school in Heard County and was a member of The Evergreen Baptist Church. He married the late Mrs. Effie Montgomery Ball in 1938. They had nine children. One son, John Alvin Ball, and one grandson, Aaron Ball, preceded him in death.

He retired from West Point Pepperell after 40 years of service.

Ms. Lisa Renee Calhoun, 36, of LaGrange, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, of injuries received in an automobile accident near LaGrange.

Ms. Calhoun was born Oct. 3, 1966, in Atlanta. She had lived in Troup County for the past 20 years and was a member of the Baptist Church. She owned and operated the Hair Jungle Salon in LaGrange.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. Dr. Billy Burks will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. John William Carroll
Mr. John William Carroll, 85, of Moreland, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at Cobb Welstar Hospital.

Mr. Carroll was born April 13, 1917, to the late Oliver Carroll and Sallie Annie Payton Carroll. He was a member of Happy Valley Baptist Church, and was a retired textile worker, carpenter, and electrician.

He was preceded in death by his son Roger, and the mother of his children, Mamie Harnden.

A funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. The Rev. David Arrington will officiate, and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Fox Slaughter
Mrs. Mary Fox Slaughter, 98, of Sharpsburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at Beaulieu Convalescent Center.

Mrs. Slaughter was born Feb. 1, 1904 in Sharpsburg, and had lived in the same house all of her life. She was a rural mail carrier in Sharpsburg for many years, and was a healthcare worker at Newnan Hospital.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis R. Slaughter.

A funeral will be held Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Sharpsburg Baptist Church. Dr. Watson Mills will officiate, and burial will be in the church cemetery. The family asks that flowers be omitted.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and all of her church family at Sharpsburg Baptist Church.

Mr. Harley Bowers
Harley Bowers, 81, of Macon, died Tuesday, December 24, 2002 at his residence.

Mr. Bowers was born in 1921 near Moreland, son of the late Wilson and Maribeth Summer Bowers. He grew up on his family's Coweta County farm.

A graduate of the University of Georgia, he was editor of the Red and Black during his college years.

Mr. Bowers was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving in the 15th Air Force in Italy during World War II. He served on the U. S. Olympic Committee and was a member of the Macon Touchdown Club, the University of Georgia Gridiron Club, and the Macon Lions Club.

Mr. Bowers was inducted into Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 and he received a 50-Year Medal from the Georgia Press Association in 1996.

He was instrumental in locating the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Museum in Macon, worked tirelessly to promote the Harley Bowers American Cancer Society Golf Classic Tournament and was a longtime sports editor for the Macon Telegraph.

Mr. Bowers was a deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Macon, where he was a member of the Somerville Sunday School Class.

Memorial services will be held at today, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Macon with the Rev. Chip Miller and the Rev. Hal McNeely officiating. The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Bowers of Macon; daughter, Clare Bowers of Duluth; sons, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff (Deidre) Bowers of Lawrenceville, Mr. and Mrs. Jack (Sharon) Bowers of Macon; and six grandchildren.

Mr. Larry Bowers
Lawrence Summer "Larry" Bowers, 80, of Atlanta died Dec. 24, 2002.

Mr. Bowers was born Dec. 2, 1922 near Moreland, son of the late Wilson and Maribeth Summer Bowers. He had an older brother, Harley, and a younger brother, David. The brothers grew up on the family farm near Moreland.

During World War II, Mr. Bowers served in the U. S. military. He was wounded and held as a prisoner of war in Germany.

After the war, he returned to Newnan. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology and began a career as a sales engineer. During his career, he gained the respect of peers and colleagues.

He and Mary Alexander of Newnan were married 54 years.

The funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 26 at Briarcliff United Methodist Church in Atlanta with the Rev. Wayne Reid officiating. Interment followed later that afternoon at White Oak Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Moreland.

Mrs. Margie Hudgens Derick, 91, of Sharpsburg died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 at Southwest Christian Hospice in Union City.

Mrs. Derick was born June 20, 1911 in Old Campbell County, daughter of the late S. L. and Claira Scarbrough Hudgens. She was a homemaker and a member of Lester Road Christian Church.

Mrs. Derick was the widow of Felton Derick. A son, James H. Derick, also preceded her in death.

The funeral service will be held today, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Christian City Chapel in Union City with Minister Lester Shell officiating. Mrs. Derick will lie in state starting at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park in Fairburn.

Mrs. Mary E. Gilbert, 82, of Birmingham, Ala. died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002 at Beaulieu Convalescent Center in Newnan.

Mrs. Gilbert was born April 18, 1920 in LaGrange. She was an Avon representative and a longtime nutritional consultant for Jefferson County.

She was a devoted member of First United Methodist Church of Birmingham where she was active in the McDonnan-Allen Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Methodist Womens Club.

Mrs. Gilbert was a charter member of the Shades Mountain Quilters Guild and a member of the Salvation Army Auxiliary. She was a member of the Rock and Dale Garden Club and a member and past president of the Rosa Strickland Study Club.

Visitation will be held at Johns-Ridout Funeral Home's Elmwood Chapel in Birmingham today, Dec. 27, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.

Mr. Rufus Heard
Mr. Rufus "Big Heard" Heard, 65, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 at Kindred Hospital in Atlanta.'

Mr. Heard was born Oct. 6, 1937 in Troup County to the late William Heard and Catherine Smedly-Stewart. He grew up in Grantville where he attended school and joined Greater Jehovah Baptist Church at an early age.

Mr. Heard worked at the William L Bonnell Company for 33 years until his health failed. He was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Render.

The funeral service will be held today, Dec. 27, at 2 p.m. at Greater Jehovah Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy Glanton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Edmond Leigh, the Rev. Johnny Strickland and the Rev. Gregory Williams. Mr. Heard will lie in state from noon until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Grantville Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Mike Bohannon, J. D. Hines, Steven L. Packard, James Brown, Leon Rosser and Darrell Sewell. Granddaughters will serve as flower bearers.

The cortege will assemble at the Heard residence at 1 p.m.

Mrs Heflin was born Jan. 10, 1922 in Palmetto. She was a retired educator, having taught in Fulton County and Coweta County.

Mrs. Heflin was a member of First Baptist Church of Newnan.

Mrs. Rebecca Colquitt Strickland

Mrs. Rebecca Colquitt Strickland, 85, of Newnan, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002.

Mrs. Strickland was born Oct. 9, 1917, in Barnesville. A graduate of Griffin High School and St. Joseph's School of Nursing, she came to Newnan in 1939 to work at Newnan Hospital. She was one of the original five nurses employed by the Coweta County Health Department and retired after 25 years of service.

Mrs. Strickland was instrumental in the development of a program for the mentally challenged, which resulted the Open Door School, which later evolved into the Newnan/Coweta Association of Retarded Citizens/Rutledge.

Prior to her death, Mrs. Strickland was the longest living member of Newnan's First United Methodist Church.

A funeral will be held Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. The Rev. Gary Parrish will officiate, and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m.

Officer Christopher R. Betts, 26, of Newnan died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002 in the line of duty.

Officer Betts was in the Georgia National Guard after having served five years in the U. S. Army. He had been with the East Point Police Department for two years.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Dec. 26, from 2-8 p.m. at Carmichael-Hemperley Funeral Home in Peachtree City. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, Dec. 27, at 1 p.m. at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4449 Northside Dr., Atlanta with Father Kevin Peek officiaiting. Interment will follow with full military honors at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Lois Reese Duffey, 84, of Carmichael Circle, Newnan, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 of heart failure following a lengthy illness at Dogwood Health and Rehabilitation Center in East Point.

Mrs. Duffey was born Aug. 8, 1918 in Douglasville. She was a skilled caregiver who enjoyed caring for her family and friends. She also loved helping children and cooking.

Mrs. Duffey lived in Newnan for more than 75 years. She was a faithful member of Mills Chapel Baptist Church for more than 65 years.

Visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 26, from 9-10:30 a.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held Dec. 26 at 11 a.m. at Mills Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Gary Parrish officiating. Nephews will serve as pallbearers, and interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Robert "Rock" Rothwell, 70, of Newnan, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Rothwell was born Aug. 8, 1932, in Parker, S.D., to the late Charles and Mary Rothwell. He served in the U.S. Navy, worked for ramp services with Eastern Airlines, and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his sons Robert Lee Rothwell, Jr., and John Henry Rothwell; sisters Irene Ellstead and Marie Aker and brother Donald Rothwell.

Mr. Solomon Matthew "Kern" Calhoun
Mr. Solomon Matthew Calhoun, 83, of Newnan, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital, following a brief illness.

Known as Kern to all his friends, Mr. Calhoun was born in Newnan in 1919 to Tom and Laura Calhoun. He grew up in Newnan, working and retiring from local textile mills, and was also a self-employed cabinetmaker. After his retirement, Mr. Calhoun enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ada Lou Calhoun.

A funeral will be held Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home. The Rev. Raymond Hayes will officiate, and burial will be in Pitts Cemetery in Moreland.

Surviving are his daughters, Avis Barber and her husband Harold of Luthersville and Barbara Hayes and her husband Raymond of Sharpsburg; son, Gary Calhoun and his wife Karon of Newnan; grandchildren Cindy Holtzclaw, William Barber, Sherri Rainwater, Judy Chappelle, Chris Hayes, and Chastity McClendon; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Mr. Leroy Gates
Mr. Leroy Gates, 86, of Newnan, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002.

Mr. Gates, the 10th child of Jack and Lela Gates, was born April 17, 1916. Raised in a Christian home, Mr. Gates had a deep love for nature and become a talented farmer and master gardener known for his vegetables and livestock.

When his wife, Lillian, died, Gates moved in with his son, Arthur and his wife, and helped to raise his four grandchildren.

Mr. Gates worked as a construction supervisor and was a active leader of the Local Labor Union #449. He continued the family tradition of worship service at Summerhill Baptist Church, and as the self-proclaimed good-will ambassador for his neighborhood. He always encouraged young people to visit his home and made them feel welcome. Mr. Gates also thoroughly enjoyed family reunions and was known for his smooth dance steps and his jovial personality.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dana Graham will give the eulogy, assisted by the Rev. Felton James and Evangelist Susuie Hudson. Burial will be in the Summerhill Church Cemetery.

Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Surviving are his son, Archie, and daughter-in-law Veleithia Gates; grandchildren Mittie, Annette, Darius, and Demetrius; great-grandchildren Marcus, Maria, Maurice, A.J., Orlando, Regina, Braxton, Shemika, Jamiyah, Bradeja, Darius Jr. and Demetrius Jr.; great-great-granddaughter Yasmine; sister, Annie Pearl; nieces Lela, Cornelia, and Dora; sister-in-law Leona.

Mrs. Flossie Jordan
A funeral service for Mrs. Flossie Rivers Jordan, 81, of Newnan, will be held Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Summerhill Baptist Church. The Rev. J.T. Coleman will officiate, and the Revs. R.L. Teagle, Clifford Davis, and Jackson will assist. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery.

Mrs. Jordan's grandsons will serve as pallbearers, and honorary pallbearers will be the Summerhill Deacon Board.

Mrs. Jordan was born July 15, 1921, in Terrell County, to the late Della and Will Rivers. Later, she moved to Newnan where she joined the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Newnan. Her family were members of Summerhill, and she later moved her membership to be with them. She served as a faithful member until her health failed.

Mrs. Jordan was preceded in death by her husband, Willie C. Jordan.

Surviving are her daughters: Margaret Harden, Mamie Johnson, and Cora Church; sons, W.J. (Shirley) Jordan, James Jordan, and George (Debra) Jordan; 21 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great, great, grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mr. Robert L. "Rock" Rothwell
Mr. Robert "Rock" Rothwell, 70, of Newnan, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at his home.

Mr. Rothwell was born Aug. 8, 1932, in Parker, S.D., to the late Charles and Mary Rothwell. He served in the U.S. Navy, worked for ramp services with Eastern Airlines, and was a member of Northside Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his sons Robert Lee Rothwell, Jr., and John Henry Rothwell; sisters Irene Ellstead and Marie Aker and brother Donald Rothwell.

A funeral will be held Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home. The Rev. Bobby Helton will officiate, and burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northside Baptist Church or North Coweta Baptist Church.

Mrs. Martha Lorraine Campbell
Martha Lorraine Campbell, 81, of Sharpsburg, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002 at Beaulieu Nursing Home.

Born Dec. 25, 1920, in Winchester, TN, Mrs. Campbell was the daughter of James William and Hattie Mathis.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel, with Reverend Roger Robinson officiating. Interment will be at Melwood Cemetery in Decatur. Visitation is today at Higgins Hillcrest Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Donald Trull, Ronald Campbell Jr., Paul Trull Jr., Tim Henderson, Rodney Crawford and Freddie Cook.

Preceding her in death are her parents, James and Hattie, her husband, Edward Wyatt Campbell Sr.; and a son, Edward Wyatt Campbell Jr.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Juanita Lorraine Stinchcomb of Conley and Mrs. Nancy Trull of Sharpsburg; five sons, Mr. Charles Norman Campbell of Sparta, Mr. Ronald Ralph Campbell of Sharpsburg, Mr. Richard Alan Campbell of Alvaton, Mr. James David Campbell of Sharpsburg, and Mr. Jon Preston Campbell of Newnan; a sister, Mrs. Thelma Willoughby of Paris, TN; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Karen Freedman Stein, 47, of Newnan, died on Dec. 21, 2002. She was born on Tuesday, January 11, 1955, in Macon, to the late Julian and the late Sylvia Sufran Freedman.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Newnan on Monday, Dec. 23, 2002 at 11 a.m. Dr. Gene Tyre, Rev. Derek Leman, and Murray Tilles will officiate. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall at The First Baptist Church of Newnan on Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, from 9:30 am to 10:45 am. Mr. John "Nat" Austin
Mr. John "Nat" Austin, 87, of LaGrange Street, Newnan, Ga., died Thursday, December 19, 2002 at Georgian Place in Newnan.

Mr. Austin was born June 21, 1915 in Newnan and was a life-long resident. He was a member of First Baptist Church and lifetime member of the Newnan Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

Surviving are his wife, Betty L. Austin; three daughters, Junie and Vincent (Austin) Markle of Savannah, Ga., Jennifer and Herschel (Austin) Baker of Roswell, Ga., and Jo Austin Teasley of Newnan; grandchildren, Meredith Baker, Jonathan Baker, Benjamin Baker and Maggie Baker, all of Roswell, Ga.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Nathaniel Austin IV.

The family was receiving friends at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan Friday from 5-7 p.m.

A funeral will be at graveside in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Roscoe Road, 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21.

Mr. Willie Paul Domineck, 61, of Luckie Street, died Monday, December 17, 2002 at Newnan Hospital.

A funeral will be Friday, December 20, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Sellers-Smith R. W. S. Memorial Chapel with the Rev. R. W. Sutton officiating. Burial will be in the Eastview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rodney Reeves, Bernard Brown, Robert Louis Elder, Tracy Barber, Quilliam Barber Jr., George Brownlee. Flower bearers will be Glenda Bellamy, Clareathia Bellamy, Lynn Roberts, Alicia White, Angelita Reid, Tasha Reid. On the day of the services the cortege will assemble at the residence at 1 p.m.

Mr. Domineck was born December 28, 1940 in Coweta County, Ga. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Napoleon Domineck. He joined the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at an early age.

Surviving are daughter, Patricia Ann Domineck (Pat); four sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Carlton (Katie), Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Melson (Annie Ruth), Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Lee Petty Sr. (Arelisha), and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Roberts (Mary Frances); two brothers, Toby Domineck and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Domineck; three aunts, Mamie Hughley, Martha Keith and Clara Glenn; uncle, George Reid Sr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
