Mr. Eugene John Neiner
Mr. Eugene "Gene" John Neiner, 85, of Sharpsburg, Ga., died Wednesday, December 4, 2002.

Mr. Neiner was born in 1917 in St. Louis, Missouri to Charles and Isabel Neiner. A self-made man who retired from Delta Airlines as the Director of Maintenance, proved that determination and hard work can be rewarding. As a child, mechanical things, especially airplanes, fascinated him. He grew up in St. Charles, Missouri, where he lived close to the airport and spent his time watching airplanes take off and land. Airplane mechanics so consumed his thoughts that as a parochial school student at St. Peters Catholic School in St. Charles, Missouri, he was continually disappointed because the Nuns never spoke a word about mechanics or airplanes.

Starting life in the middle of the depression, he took any kind of work he could find. In 1936, J. C. Penny opened a store in St. Charles and because of his persistence, he became their first "real" employee working six days a week for $60 a month. But he never gave up his love for airplanes and continually pursued trying to get a job in the airline industry. His persistence paid off when he convinced Chicago and Southern Airlines to hire him at no salary for a one-month trial period. In April 1939 his work was so impressive he was hired as a junior mechanic. In 1940 he married Rose, who supported his passion for airplanes, and the airline moved them to Memphis. In 1953 when Chicago and Southern merged with Delta, they moved to College Park, Ga. He retired from Delta Airlines, Atlanta in 1979 as Director of Maintenance.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Mrs. Rosemany Bizelli Neiner; two daughters, Bonnie Maguire and her husband Mick, and Rosanne Swiatek and her husband Andrew, both of Sharpsburg, Ga.; four grandchildren, Molly Maguire, Michael Maguire, Erin Maguire and Natalie Saccary; three great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
