Services for James Maxwell (Max) Little of Boston are at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004 at Boston Baptist Church. The Rev. Tim Phillips will officiate and internment is in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are Thomas Stone and Mr. Little's nephews, Mike Little, Jonathan Little, Carl Wilson, Tim Wilson and Lester Suber. Honorary pallbearers are the deacons of Boston Baptist Church. The son of the late Mack L. and Lois Moore Little, Mr. Little was born on April 3, 1941 in Thomas County. On July 15, 1962, he married Barbara Jo Paulk Little, who survives. Mr. Little was employed at Boston Tractor Company and a member of Boston Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Other survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William Matthew and Jennifer Little of Abbeville; a granddaughter, Jessica Little; sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian and Bernard Hanratty of Thomasville, and Carolyn and Bobby Barrett of Aiken, S.C.; a brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Ann Little of Boston; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gene and Patricia Brown of Thomasville. Mrs. Atkinson died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004. Born April 14, 1940 in Thomas County, she was the daughter of the late Rhett Groover and Jewel Lewis Searcy. She was a homemaker, a loving mama, granny and friend to many, and a loving wife for 47 years. Survivors include her husband, Alton Atkinson; sons and daughters in law Mike and Julie Atkinson, Don and Penny Atkinson; daughter and son in law Brenda and Don Johnson; grandsons Donnie Atkinson, Stephen Atkinson, Jack Atkinson, Brad Johnson; granddaughters Holly Atkinson, Laura Atkinson, Emily Johnson; brother and sister in law Jimmy and Hazel Searcy; a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and close family friends Ronnie and Bobbie Timms and their daughter Tammy Wilkins of Ellijay. Services for Douglas Crawford Bearden, 84, of Cairo are at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2004 at Reno Baptist Church. The Rev. Charles Neely, Rev. George Stacy Williams, Rev. John Paul Hasick and Rev. Alan Hartsfield will officiate, and interment is in Broome Cemetery in Reno. Active pallbearers are Robert Bearden, Jr., Johnny Booth, Philip Palmer, Curtis Cofer, Tracy Bennett and Lee Wilkes. Honorary pallbearers are Neil Holton, Royal Cook, Duane Hopkins, Ronald Sellars, Dan Lewis, Rayford Bell, William Holton, Ralph Hammett and Walter Maxwell. Bearden died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born Jan. 30, 1919 in Bedford County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Crawford Berry and Mary Trollinger Bearden. Bearden was a retired automobile parts manager and a member of Reno Baptist Church. He served in the US Air Force's 9th Fighter Squadron, 49th Fighter group in the Pacific Theater during WWII. On Dec. 21, 1946, Bearden married Nell Holton who preceded him in death Jan. 3, 1976. He was also preceded in death by brothers Bill Bearden, Mark Bearden, Bobby Bearden and Jimmie Bearden On July 29, 1978, he married Dollie Watkins Sanders, who survives. Other survivors include sons and daughters in law Larry and Barbara Bearden, Carson and Annette Bearden, all of Cairo; daughter and son in law Elaine and Dave Bearden Fowler of Palm Bay, Fla.; Stepson and wife, Jake and Deborah Sanders of Cairo; grandchildren Sharon B. A lifetime resident of Boston, Ms. Leak died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004 at Archbold Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born Feb. 8, 1929 in Boston, she was the daughter of the late John McLeod and Florence Walcott Leak. Ms. Leak graduated from Boston High School and attended what is now Valdosta State University and was retired from the banking business in Boston and Pavo with Farmers and Merchants Bank. She was a lifelong member of Boston Presbyterian Church and served as church deacon and elder. Survivors include nieces Barbara Leak of Atlanta, Dayna Leak Hardy and her husband Jim of Thomasville, Donna Leak Darty and husband Alan, and great neices Julie Darty and Jennifer Darty of Oviedo, Fla. Mrs. Herndon died Jan. 26 at her residence. Born Feb. 29, 1924 in Rural, Ala., she was the daughter of the late James Matterson and Nancy Cebell Wilson McCrory. On July 4, 1955 in Charlton County, Ga., she married Clewis F. Herndon who preceded her in death. Mrs. Herndon was a member of New Hope Holiness Church and was a registered nurse at Bay Pines Veterans Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla. Sarah "Elise" Carney of Thomasville died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born Dec. 25, 1927 in Ocilla, she was a daughter of the late James Ira Warren and Bertha Mae Bryant Warren. She was married to Lester E. Carney on Oct. 4, 1943 in Quitman and he preceded her in death on Jan. 8, 1998. She had lived in Thomasville for 54 years moving from Quitman. She was member of Dawson Street Baptist Church and served the needs of others working as a caretaker for the elderly. Survivors include her sons, James L. Carney and wife, Bobbie of Columbia, Tenn., Ron Carney and wife, Donna of Thomasville; brother, John L. Warren of Thomasville; sisters, Sharon Bryant and Joice Croft both of Jacksonville; grandsons, Clint Carney, Grant Carney, Ryan Carney; great-granddaughter, Azayla Carney; step-grandchildren, John Ellis II, Jennifer Ellis; great-stepgrandson, John Ellis III. A memorial service for William (Billy) Jeffrey McAuley of Thomasville will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at Neville Funeral Home Southwest Chapel in Holland, Ohio. Burial will be private. Mr. McAuley died Feb. 4 in Raleigh, N.C. Born Jan. 18, 1964, he was a longtime resident of Toledo, Ohio and had relocated to Thomasville four years ago. He was a 1982 graduate of Springfield High School in Holland and was employed as a fabricator on the field installation crew of Hurst Boiler and Welding Company Inc. in Coolidge. He will be missed deeply by everyone whose life he touched. Survivors include his mother, Mary Lou McAuley of Toledo; a son, Zachary; daughter, McKenzie of Holland; sister, Kathy McAuley of Holland; brothers, Jon (Cindy Minor) of Seminole, Fla., Joe (Marie) of Thomasville, Jim (Tami) of Maumee, Ohio, Mike (Denise) of Maumee, Sam (Cathy) of Toledo; and 15 nieces and nephews. Graveside services for Wanda Lynette Cutts will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Climax. The Revs. Leon Vanlandingham and William Cain will officiate. Ms. Cutts was born in Dade County, Fla., on Aug. 6, 1957, and is the daughter of the late Lamar Warren Cutts and Evelyn Boyett Cutts. Survivors include a sister, Nancy Davis of Miami; a sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Anthony Ruggiano of Deland, Fla.; a brother and sister-in-law, Lamar Warren and Katha Cutts of Cairo; and aunt and uncle Gloria and Armando (Marty) Martinez of Craig, Colo. Brooks who preceded her in death. Mrs. Brooks retired in 1995 as a nursing assistant at Archbold Memorial Hospital. She was a member of New Heights Assembly of God.
