Graveside services for Alonzo L. Davidson of Thomasville are at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 at Laurel Hill Cemetery on Georgia Street. The Rev. Kevin Odom will officiate. Mr. Davidson died on Feb. 15 at the Brian Center. Born June 15, 1907 in Cherokee County, N.C., he was the son of the late John Palmer and Rosa Lee Lovingwood Davidson. He was married to Estell Brannon Davidson who preceded him in death. He was employed at Flowers Baking for 45 years. He was the owner of Miccosukee Boat Landing and was an avid fisherman and loved the outdoors. Survivors include a son, Doug Davidson and daughter, Ann Davidson both of Thomasville; nephew, Reid Prosser of Thomasville; and niece, Frances Annis of Warner Robins. Services for Bobby Austin Gandy, 77, of Cairo are at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 at First United Methodist Church in Cairo. The Rev. Born Oct. 13, 1926 in Cairo, he was a son of the late Early and Lillie Ponder Gandy. He was married to Jeanette Perry Gandy of Cairo on July 25, 1948. He was an executive with a moving and storage company in Miami, Fla. prior to moving back to Cairo after retiring. A member of the Traffic Club of Dade County, Southeast Movers/Warehouse Men's Association, served as president of Dade County Movers Association and the National Moving/Storage Association, vice president of Santini Brothers Moving and Storage Company, board of directors of Florida Trucking Association, past president of Golden K Kiwanis Club, the Investment Club, the Birthday Club and served as a volunteer in the Literacy Program. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cairo. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Perry Gandy of Cairo; daughters, Jackie Livingston and husband, Gary, of Tallahassee, Fla., Janet Gandy and husband, Brian Rich of Jupiter, Fla.; a grandson, Alex Torelli serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq; granddaughters, Kathryn Torelli of Jupiter and Amanda Livingston of Tallahassee; brothers, Irwin Gandy and wife, Marion of Cairo, Earl Gandy and wife, Judy of Cumming; a special sister-in-law, Susie Moretti of Ft. McChesney Hill Jeffries
Memorial services for McChesney Hill Jeffries were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 16, 2004 at First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta. A private interment at Westview Cemetery preceded the memorial service. Mr. Jeffries died Feb. 14. Born Jan. 3, 1922 in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of Jessie Watt and McChesney Hill Jeffries. At an early age he moved with his parents to Thomasville and was educated in the public schools there. After he entered Davidson College, his education was interrupted when he was called into World War II service as an infantry lieutenant in the European Theater. After the war, he returned to Davidson where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, president of the Interfraternity Council, a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a cum laude graduate. He then attended Harvard Law School and graduated cum laude. Mr. Jeffries moved to Atlanta and began a legal career with Moise, Post and Gardner. Following a merger, the firm became Hansell, Post, Brandon and Dorsey and subsequently, Hansell and Post, which later merged with Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue. During his years of law practice, he was intensely interested in the continuing legal education of the bar, which in early years was purely voluntary. He was asked by the Georgia Supreme County to develop a mandatory continuing legal education program for all Georgia lawyers, which was implemented in 1984. He then chaired the Commission on Continuing Lawyer Competency. For this effort he received the Amicus Curiae Award from the Supreme Court of Georgia. This program has since been used a model by several other states. Mr. Jeffries was a member of the American and Atlanta Bar Associations, the State Bar of Georgia and the Lawyers Club of Atlanta, of which he served as president. He was also a member of the American and Georgia Bar Foundations and the American Law Institute. Active in civic and religious affairs, he served as chairman of the board of trustees of the Atlanta Speech School and the Presbyterian Homes. He also was a member of the advisory board of the Atlanta Foundation. Mr. Jeffries was honored by being the recipient of the Alumni Service Award at his 50th Davidson College reunion. He was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club and the Capital City Club, where he served on the board of directors. As a member of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, he served as a deacon, an elder and clerk of the session. Survivors include his wife, Alice Mitchell Jeffries; son and daughter-in-law, McChesney Hill Jeffries Jr. and Virginia Hartley Jeffries; son, Lewis Mitchell Jeffries; and grandchildren, Virginia Hartley, Jeffries and McChesney Hill Jeffries III all of Atlanta; sister, Marianne Jeffries Williams of Thomasville; and brother and sister-in-law, James Watt Jeffries and Blake Mack Jeffries of Oleath, Kan. Mr. Jeffries was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Elizabeth Jeffries. Services for Norman Milous Rogers, 79, of Douglas were at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004 at the Saint Mark United Methodist Church. The Rev. Harry Loyd officiated and interment was in Camp Ground Cemetery in Morven. Mr. Rogers died Friday, Feb. 13 in Valdosta. Mr. Rogers, a native of Brooks County, was born Feb. 1, 1925 a son of the late Quinton Milous and Clara Hendry Rogers. He was the widower of the late Juanita Elaine Simpson Rogers and a retired USDA inspector with the U.S. government. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and he was a member of Saint Mark United Methodist Church. Survivors include daughters, June Allen of Moultrie, Karen Smith of Sandersville; sons, David Rogers of Thomasville, Mark Rogers of Valdosta; a sister, Frances Zellers of Weathford Texas; a brother, Tolly Rogers of Sylvester; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services for Lester Ralph Fort, 84, of Thomasville are at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 at First Baptist Church Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Milton Gardner and the Rev. Dr. Dan Spencer will officiate. A private interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mr. Fort died Feb. 22 of heart failure. Born Oct. 13, 1919 in Bearden, Ark. to the late Charles Young Fort and Lorena Burke Fort, he was preceded in death by his three sisters; five brothers; first wife, Lois C. Fort; and son, Gary Ralph Fort. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Fisher Fort; his daughter, Bonnie Spann and her husband Charles all of Thomasville; his daughter-in-law Nancy C. Fort of Jacksonville, Fla.; and five grandchildren. A veteran of World War II, he lived in Little Rock, Ark. from 1947 to 1982 where he was employed as the building engineer first at Pfeifer's of Arkansas, which later became Dillard's Department Store and later at Worthen Bank and Trust Company of Little Rock where he retired at age 62. Upon retirement, he moved to Thomasville to be near his daughter and her family enjoying tennis, bridge and his woodworking shop. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, P.O. Sarah Everett Mardre Bell
Services for Sarah Everett Mardre Bell are at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2004 at Memorial Baptist Church in Waynesboro, Va. The Rev. Temple Myers will officiate and friends may greet the family from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and immediately following the service. Burial will be in the family plot at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Thomasville at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 28. A resident of Baldwin Park until recently, Mrs. Bell died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004 at King's Daughters' Community Health & Rehabilitation Center after a brief illness. She was born Nov. 16, 1904 in Boston, Ga. to William Thomas and Cassie Haddock (Groover) Mardre, the oldest of four daughters. She was a 1926 graduate of Valdosta State College for Women and worked for Fenner and Bean Brokerage in Atlanta. She also was secretary and bookkeeper at Greenwood Plantation in Thomasville where, on May 12, 1931, she was married to the late Dr. Rudolph Bell in a garden wedding. She and her husband made their home in Thomasville until his death June 15, 1987. In 1990 she moved to Staunton. While a resident of Baldwin Park, she led an aerobics class, organized the Men's Chorus, now the Baldwin Park Chorus, and until last year, scheduled the programs for the weekly Hymn Sing held every Sunday evening. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church, Thomasville, and was active as an associate member of Memorial Baptist Church, Staunton. Mrs. Bell was an active volunteer in the community of Thomasville. She was the first Cub Scouts den mother in the city, working with the Rev. Shirley. She initiated the first Cub Scouts Banquet. She was proud of the fact that of the 10 members of the original den, three boys ultimately attained the rank of Eagle Scout. She enjoyed working with young people and taught nine-year-old Juniors in the Sunday school at First Baptist Church. During World War II, she was a Red Cross volunteer and recalled meeting every troop train that came through and distributing box lunches to the soldiers. Mrs. Bell served as president of the Medical Auxiliary of Archbold Memorial Hospital for 12 years. She accumulated over 2,000 hours of service as a Pink Lady volunteer in the hospital's Emergency Department. As president of the Tallyho Garden Club, she helped to implement the Old Fashioned Supper as an annual fundraiser for the club. She was also a member of and consultant for the American Rose Society. She tested newly developed hybrid roses in her garden for Jackson and Perkins. She was president of the Thomasville Rose Society and gave a perpetual trophy for the annual Rose Show. She was a member and served as historian of the John B. Gordon Chapter, UDC. She enjoyed traveling in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii; Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, and South America, most frequently with her husband of 56 years. Survivors include a son, Dr. Rudolph Mardre Bell and his wife, Caroline; four grandsons, Rudolph Mardre Bell Jr. and wife, Tamme of Greenville, S.C.; Dr. Alfred Dudley Bell and wife, Julia of Winston-Salem, N.C., Andrew McIlwaine Bell of Arlington, David Beverley Bell of Boulder, Colo.; two granddaughters, Mary Katharine Bell Kammer and husband, William of Stafford, Sarah Virginia Bell Meekhof and husband, John of Dumfries; four great-grandsons: Thomis Gregory Kammer, Philip Mardre Meekhof, Rudolph Benjamin Bell and Daniel Amadeo Bell; nine great-granddaughters: Elaine Victoria Kammer, Elizabeth Marie Bell, Emily Caroline Bell, Erin Katherine Meekhof, Stacey Christina Meekhof, Rebecca Sarah Meekhof, Caroline Frazer Bell, Katherine Julia Bell, and Susannah Everett Bell; two sisters, Anne Mardre Searcy of Thomasville and Virginia Mardre Krech of Mt. Dora, Fla.; a nephew, William Krech of Mt. Dora; and five nieces, Cassie Krech and Mary Ann Krech, also of Mt. Dora, Caroline Krech Balisteries of San Diego, Calif., Gail Goodwin Stringer and Sarah Virginia Goodwin, both of Albany. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Rudolph Bell; by a sister, Mary Mardre Goodwin; and by a nephew, Thomas Goodwin.
