Ken Chancellor will officiate and interment is in Floral Memory Gardens. Mrs. Pierce was born in Thomas County on July 31, 1919, the daughter of Bertie Lee Palmer and King Alligood. She was very happily married to Bennett Osborn Pierce from Aug. 31, 1940, until his death in September 1997. She was a full time wife, mother, and homemaker for years before entering retail sales for the Diana Shop and JC Penney, from which she retired. She was a beloved member of Lakeside Baptist Church since 1966 where she taught Sunday School and served on various church committees. She was a member of the Rose Moore Sunday School Class. She loved God and was known to all of her friends and family as a gentle, but firm, loving woman who was always willing to help. She had a wonderful sense of humor that was most evident when she inserted her famous, “If you say so” into a conversation. No matter what the issue or topic, she was the peacemaker. Everyone came to her for advice. She loved her family and friends and would do anything she could for them. She was a co-founder of a parents group for visually impaired children. That group was instrumental in bringing these children into the public school system in Albany in the early 1960’s. In this area, she was a pioneer, believing that people, not just children, should have the opportunity to learn at the highest level possible. She did not believe that anyone should be institutionalized just because they had a disability that made learning in the normal way difficult. She was an avid fisherman until her health prevented her from going and loved nothing better than a quiet river or spot on the gulf where she could enjoy quality time with her family. She showed her appreciation of nature through her enjoyment of wild birds, especially hummingbirds, and her love of flowers. Even though her health had been failing, she enjoyed the open air surrounded by songs of birds and the beauty of her yard. Survivors include two sons, Ronald Bennett Pierce and Kerry Lynn Pierce both of Albany; one daughter, Sharon Diane Pierce of Garfield Heights, Ohio; two granddaughters, Sherry Marie Pierce of Albany, Stacey Lynn Curry of Bogart; two great-grandsons, Nicholas Randall, Timothy Austin Pierce both of Albany; two nieces; and one nephew.
