Alice Broadwater Williams
Services for Alice Broadwater Williams, 80, Cairo, are at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at Bethlehem AME Church, 412 Second Street, S.W., Cairo. Interment is in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo. Mrs. Williams died Thursday, Feb. 2 at her residence. She was born in Grady County to the Rev. Edward Broadwater and Janie Scott Broadwater. She graduated from Rockdale High School in Camilla and enrolled at Fort Valley State College, Fort Valley, in pursuit of a degree in English Education. On June 17, 1946, she married the late Liscious Williams, Sr., a noteworthy local businessman. This union was blessed with seven children. Having to interrupt her college studies, she took on the formidable task of motherhood. She nurtured her children in the admonition of the Lord and was a member of Bethlehem AME Church. Reading, daily chores and high academic expectations were modeled in the household. In spite of a rigorous schedule, she managed to develop a real love for home life. She enjoyed cooking, writing, sewing and reading the word of God. The spiritual legacy of Alice Williams is reflected in her Christian walk as she aspired to live a Christ-centered life. She will always be remembered by her loved ones for her unparalleled strength, kind heart and gentle spirit. Survivors include seven children: Liscious Williams Jr. of Lawrenceville, Glenda Wrenn (Walter) of Voorhees, N.J., Beryl Lisa James (George) of Miramar, Fla., Griselda Lipscomb (Steven) of Kennesaw, Ronald ("The Shoe Man") Williams (Deborah) of Cairo, Bertha Williams of Macon; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 26 nieces and nephews; numerous other relatives and close friends; seven siblings: Annie Laura Jones, Edward Broadwater, Mary Jane Geter, Carlton Broadwater (Demaris), Martha Craft (Guy), Bessie Hudson (Sherman), and Marvin Broadwater (Shermaine). Born April 17, 1908, on Irwin County, she was the daughter of the late George and Susie Grantham Giddens. On Nov. 9, 1928, in Irwin County, she married Tommy Elliott Clifton who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and was a member of First Newark Baptist Church. Lamar Culbreth
Funeral services for Lamar Culbreth, 78, Valdosta, are at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home in Valdosta. The Rev. Phil West and the Rev. Mac Weaver will officiate and interment is in Sunset Hill Cemetery. Mr. Culbreth died on Thursday, Feb. 1 after a lengthy illness. Born in Jennings, Fla., to the late Alvin and Irene Scaff Culbreth, he had lived the majority of his life in the Valdosta area. Mr. Culbreth is a veteran of the Navy, having served in World War II. He then attended and received his bachelor of science degree in agriculture from the University of Florida and became a lifelong Gator fan. After graduation, Mr. Culbreth taught agriculture classes to World War II veterans in north Florida. He then began a career in pest control that would last for 50 years, in which he started his own business, Astro Exterminating Services in 1969. He expanded his business through acquisitions to include the cities of Thomasville, Moultrie, Tifton, Savannah and Hilton Head, S.C.. Mr. Culbreth was a past president of the Georgia Pest Control Association, served on the Valdosta City Council for six years, a member of the Kiwanis Club and served on the board of trustees of the Boys and Girls Club of Valdosta. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Margaret McIntyre Culbreth of Valdosta; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Kim Perlman, of Valdosta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick and Sara Culbreth and Arch and Stefanie Culbreth, all of Savannah; six grandchildren, Melissa Bullington (Pete) Thomas of Thomasville, Allison Leigh Culbreth, Rick Culbreth Jr., Joshua Culbreth, Blake Culbreth all of Savannah, Addy Miller Perlman of Valdosta; two sisters, Jon Eva Hungerford of Lexington, Ky., Betty Carter of Jacksonville, Fl.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was born in Barwick on Dec. 20, 1916, to the late William Cleveland and Elizabeth Beatrice Little Connell and had lived in Valdosta for many years. Mr. Connell was a retired land surveyor and a member of the First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Professional Engineers and Surveyors, Society of American Foresters and Society of Professional Realtors. Mr. Connell was a veteran of the United States Navy having served in World War II. Survivors include three sons and a daughter in law, Tharan Eugene Connell Jr., Robert Howard Connell, William Greg and Valina Connell all of Valdosta; four grandchildren, Jessie Larae Connell, Robert Tharan Connell, William Abram Connell, Sara Elizabeth Connell; two sisters, Gloria Kinlaw of Decatur and Sylvia Jones of Thomasville. Keitha Kay Ruiz, 70, Dixie, died Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006, at Archbold Hospital. Born in Jackson, Mich., she was the daughter of Keith and Rosa Pringle Kuhn. She was a retired registered nurse serving as director of the emergency room at Archbold Hospital. She was a membre of St. John Catholic Church. A celebration of life for Dewey Monroe Lee, 74, is at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, 2006, at First Baptist Church in Thomasville. Graveside services are at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 2 at Riverside Cemetery in Jacksonville, Fla., with military honors by the Florida National Guard. Mr. Lee died Monday, Jan. 30 in Tallahassee, Fla. Born in Cairo, he was a graduate of Andrew Jackson High School, a veteran of the Florida National Guard, retired from Western Electric and a member of the Baptist faith. Mr. Karr died Feb. 26 at Archbold Hospital. Born March 18, 1934, in Cleveland, Ohio, he was the son of the late James J. and Cecelia George Karr. On May 26, 1962, in Cleveland, he married Teresa Marie Ruggiero who survives. Mr. Karr was a retired partner with Centek Industries in Thomasville.
