Born Nov. 15, 1928, in Thomas County, he was the son of the late E. W. Hall Sr. and Ruby Lewis Hall. On April 5, 1952 he married Joyce Blackburn Hall who preceded him in death on April 1, 1992. Mr. Hall was a veteran of the United States Army-Air Corps and was a Master Electrician and farmer. He was a deacon and a member of the Pelham Masonic Lodge #312 and a Shriner. Born Oct. 19, 1965, in Thomas County, she was the daughter of Ann Mickens and Handy Wilson, who survive. Mrs. Sparrow, a member of Faith Temple Apostolic Church, lived in Thomasville for 40 years. She was married to Robert Lee Sparrow, who survives. Mildred Maxwell Collins Johnson
Graveside services for Mildred Maxwell Collins Johnson, Tallahassee, Fla., are at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo. The Rev. John Paul Hasick will officiate. Mrs. Johnson died Jan. 25 at her residence. Born Sept. 8, 1936, in Grady County, she was a daughter of the late Angus and Nancy Stephens Maxwell. She was married to Joe Collins who preceded her in death on July 14, 1970. She later married Walter B. Johnson who survives. In the course of her marriage, she traveled the world over with her husband in his work. She lived in Jamaica, Italy, and other areas of the world making acquaintances who have remained longtime friends. Several years ago, she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and she and her husband returned to Tallahassee where she waged the battle of her illness with a great inner strength she received from her faith in God. She remained concerned about other people even when she was at her worst and always made her friends feel better when they left her side after a visit. She never had a complaint and faced life with a smile. She accepted her illness and never wavered in her faith. She died with her faithful and loving husband by her side. John W. Mobley III
Memorial services for John W. Mobley III, 78, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Thomasville are at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, 2006, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 216 Remington Ave., Thomasville with a reception following. Mr. Mobley died Tuesday, Jan. 24 after an extended illness. Born in Milledgeville, on Feb. 8, 1927, he was the eldest of three sons of Dr. John W. Mobley and Margaret Nixon Mobley of Thomasville. He attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Va., and Emory University and the University of Georgia. Raised in Pelham and Thomasville, he became an avid sportsman and pursued his love of hunting and fishing to the fullest for his entire life throughout south Georgia and north Florida. “Captain John”, as he was known to all, decided to turn his hobbies into business when he opened and ran The Gun and Tackle Shop in downtown Thomasville for many years. Many a young and even seasoned hunters and fishermen learned a lot of the tricks of the trade by visiting his shop. One of the best events occurred when Captain John and his fishing crew would display their catch of giant tarpon at the front of the store for photo shoots by the local newspaper. As much as he loved fishing, there was no doubt his No. 1 sport was duck shooting. Pursuing ring-necked ducks with his best hunting buddies Nat Williams, Bill Owens and his sons and grandsons was his true passion. He became known as the best duck shooter in the area with his prolific ability to take doubles and triples with his trusty Winchester Model 12. Captain John later moved to Tallahassee and joined Kevin Kelly’s Sporting Goods where he helped Kevin’s to grow and later returned to Thomasville to help open and manage Kevin’s of Thomasville. He was instrumental in helping the start up of Ducks Unlimited chapters throughout south Georgia and north Florida and was always eager to share his love and knowledge of the outdoors with everyone. His interest also included being a Boy Scout Scoutmaster and an aficionado of swing-jazz music. He is survived by his wife, Rosezine Mobley of Tallahassee; his five children, John W. “Jock” Mobley IV of Pensacola, Fla., Scott L. Mobley of Atlanta, Ned H. Mobley of Los Angeles, Calif., Margaret M. Thompson (Russ) of Thomasville, Gordon H. Mobley of Jacksonville, Fla.; and three grandchildren, David C. Scott, John W. He was a 55-year member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church and a chauffer. Other survivors includes grandson, Mandrell Birks of Laurel, Maryland; granddaughter, Sharee Birks of Washington, D.C.; granddaughter-in-law, Jennifer E. Birks of Laurel, Maryland; son-in-law, E.J. Birks of Washington, D.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A daughter, Doretha W. Birks preceded him in death in November 1976.
