Services for W.D. Moye, 85, are at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at Gordon Heights Baptist Church in Cairo. The Rev. Born Nov. 29, 1920, in Baker County, he was a son of the late William Demond and Annie Laura Baxter Moye. He was married to Norma C. Morey who preceded him in death on July 4, 1994. After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, he worked for the Grady County Board of Education as school bus garage superintendent. He was a member of Gordon Heights Baptist Church. Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, William R. Moye of Panama City, Fla., Rusty and Patsy Moye, Steve Moye, Mark Moye all of Cairo; daughters and sons-in-law, Karen M. and Donald Palmer of Pelham, Celeste M. Hernandez of Cairo; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris M. and Rupert Vick of Cairo, Juanita M. and Bob Davis of Arkansas; 16 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Albert Earl Price
Memorial services for Albert Earl Price, 85, Rockledge, Fla., were at 1:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, in the chapel of Wylie-Baxley Funeral Home, 1200 South U. S. Hwy. 1, Rockledge. A military interment with honors followed at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge. Mr. Price died Saturday, Jan. 7 at his residence. Born on June 17, 1920, in Roanoke, Va., he was the second son of Grover William and Mary Elizabeth Price. He came to Cocoa Beach, Fla., in 1966 from Fairfax, Va. and recently relocated to Rockledge. Mr. Price began his engineering career with the Norfolk and Western Railroad drafting maps etc., in Roanoke, Va. During World-War II, he enlisted in the amed forces and served his country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers where he supervised the construction of bridges, hospitals and roads, in the European theater of Operations. After suffering injuries in France, Mr. Price was sent stateside to recover, where he met the future Mrs. Price, Ernestine Shepherd. After his recovery, he married and returned to the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va., where he graduated with a master’s degree in civil engineering. While completing his studies, he had several papers published on subjects concerning the effect of freezing and thawing on concrete during pre-set conditions, use of Improved threaded fasteners for roof trusses, and the use of special fasteners. He soon became an assistant professor of applied mechanics at VPI teaching and delivering lectures in statics, fluid dynamics, and materials strengths. He continued his career as an engineer for the Dupont Corp. and Peter Kiewit Company supervising the construction of Atomic Energy Commission plants in Aiken, S.C. and in Piketon, Ohio, respectively. During this time, he formed the A. E. Price Construction Company, building homes for personnel in nearby Portsmouth, Ohio. He returned to Virginia, upon the death of his father and again worked for VPI as an associate professor while continuing to operate his construction company building custom homes in Blacksburg, Va. During the late 1950’s, he took an assignment with the Boeing Company in Seattle, Wash., overseeing the BOMARC interceptor missile defense weapon systems at installations at Eglin Air Force Base, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., and Suffolk Air Force Base, Long Island, N.Y. At Boeing, during the 1960’s he transferred to Huntsville, Ala., New Orleans, La., and Cocoa Beach, Fla., where he became involved with computer support and technical data management and became a program manager for the Saturn V launch umbilical tower swing arms, supervising the design and construction of the Saturn V booster system for a number of Apollo manned space flights. He entered the consulting field during the 1970’s as a state of Florida licensed professional engineer for a number of firms. Later, he operated his own consulting business, for more than 20 years, where he oversaw the design and construction of numerous public and private projects throughout Brevard County and Florida. He continued practicing engineering as a consultant throughout 2005. He was a member of the Chi Epsilon Fraternity, the Society of the Sigma XI, The Old Guard of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and The Florida Engineering Society. Besides practicing his profession he enjoyed reading, current events and traveling. He traveled throughout the United States and Europe during his lifetime. Survivors include his loving wife, Ernestine Shepherd Price of 60 years; sons, Edward W. Price, Williams D. Price and Gregory L. Price and their wives. Services for Clifford Arline Whatley, 94, Cairo, are at 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, at First United Methodist Church in Cairo where she was a member. The Rev. Richard Soper will officiate and interment is in Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo. Mrs. Whatley died Sunday, Jan. 22 at Archbold Hospital in Thomasville. Born Aug. 17, 1911, in Cairo, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Jefferson and Mellie Lacey Arline. She was married to Charles B. Whatley Sr. She was a retired public school teacher with the Grady County Board of Education. She taught second grade from 1945 to 1946. She returned in September 1955 and taught until 1970 in Grady County. She taught in Dougherty County schools from 1970 to 1975. Funeral services for Mr. Ermon Lee Butler, 81, of Calvary, Ga., will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at Calvary Baptist Church in Calvary. Interment will follow in Piedmont Cemetery in Calvary. Mr. Lee died Jan. 15 in Thomasville. Born Sept. 3, 1920, in Ozark, Ala., he moved to Monticello in 1941, after serving in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific in World War II. He was owner/manager of L.G. Morris Motors Inc. until retirement in 1971. He was a past member of the Monticello Kiwanis Club, treasurer of the Jefferson County Historical Society for 26 years and a faithful member and elder of Monticello Presbyterian Church. He was a lover of nature and a conservationist and was awarded Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year in 1990. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Josephine Morris Lee; a daughter, Linda Lee Wheeler and husband, Cary of Monticello; a son, Dr. Louis G. He returned to Thomasville and launched his career as a road/bridge builder, cattle rancher and hotel developer. Alice Dobbs
Memorial services for Alice Eugenia Taff Dobbs are at 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son Funeral Home, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta. The Rev. Wade Trimmer will officiate. Mrs. Dobbs died Monday, Jan. 1 surrounded by her children. The daughter of John P. and Mary Russell Taff, she was born in 1924 in Omaha, Neb. She was raised in Great Bend, Kan., where during World War II she worked at the local airfield and met her husband, a B-29 pilot. After the war, she lived briefly in Mississippi before relocating to Thomasville, where her children were raised. Mrs. Dobbs loved music and art, singing with the Island Singers in Hilton Head, S.C., as well as the Augusta Choral Society. She was also a volunteer with the Women’s Board of University Hospital, and was known for her beauty, quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. She was a member of Grace Fellowship Church. She will be missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her former husband, Guy Talmage Dobbs Jr. of Thomasville; three children: Dana Dobbs Sherrard (Tom) of Nashville, Tenn., Linda Dobbs Wier (Marion) of Augusta, John Howard Dobbs (Ginger) of Grovetown; six grandchildren, Katherine Randall Sherrard of New York City, N.Y., Mary Elizabeth Sherrard of Washington, D.C., Thomas Johnson Sherrard III of Nashville, Tenn., Marion Alexander Wier Jr. (Courtney) and Charles Patrick Wier all of Augusta, John David Wier of Charleston, S.C., John Howard Dobbs Jr., Matthew Guy Dobbs both of Grovetown; two great-grandchildren, Macie Edens Wier and Herbert Parker Wier; and a sister, Mary Lou Fryberger (Bill) of Great Bend.
