Edward Lee Floyd Jr.
Memorial services for Edward Lee Floyd Jr., 80, is at 1 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Saint Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church, 3110 Ashford Dunwoody Rd., Atlanta. Interment is at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 24, at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Thomasville. The family will receive friends in the parish hall after the memorial service. Father Derwent Suthers will officiate. Father Charles Bennett of St. Thomas Episcopal Church will officiate at the graveside service. Mr. Floyd died Wednesday, Jan. 19 from complications associated with an extendedand courageous battle with cancer. He was born on May 13, 1924. After graduating from Druid Hills High School, like other men of that era, he was called into service for his country. He served in the European Theater of Operations as a member of the 84th Infantry Division, 333rd Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion, B Company. The 84th “Rail-splitters” played an instrumental role in the Ardennes campaign during the bitter winter of December 1944 and January 1945. After the end of the war and his discharge from the army, he returned home and earned his industrial management degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. During that time, he enjoyed fellowship with his Chi Phi fraternity brothers following the Yellow Jackets. Throughout his life, he enjoyed long term friendships. It was through one of these friendships that he became introduced to his bride, the late Martha Larkin Ball, of Thomasville. Despite their split allegiances to the Yellow Jackets and the University of Georgia Bulldogs, they enjoyed 50 years of marriage. This marriage produced a large family of four children and numerous grandchildren to whom he remained dedicated until his passing. It was his professional occupation to be involved in the design and maintenance of industrial cold storage refrigeration systems used in food processing facilities, but it was his love to build and improve upon anything in which he became involved. During his latter years, he and his wife were able to enjoy their beloved home in Highlands, N.C., with their friends and family. Throughout his life he quietly gave help to others without seeking recognition. He was a parishioner of St. Martin in the Fields Episcopal Church in Atlanta for 47 years, and attended St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Thomasville when in residence there. He is survived by a son, Edward Lee Floyd III of Atlanta and his wife Mary; two grandchildren, Amanda and Matthew; a daughter, Susan F. Floyd of Houston, Texas and husband, William Norman Floyd Jr.; a daughter, Martha Brantley Brinkley of Irmo, S.C.; grandson, Jeb Brinkley; and a son, William Cobb Ball Floyd of Charlotte, N.C. and wife Susan; and grandsons Ben and William. The family would like to thank the physicians and nurses of Piedmont Hospital 5th Floor South for their kind and patient service during his illness. Following the interment in Thomasville, the family will receive friends at the parish hall of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Thomas Episcopal Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 33, Thomasville, Ga. 31799 or to Thomasville Landmarks Inc., P. O. Box 1285, Thomasville, Ga. 31799. - H. M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill, Atlanta
