Dr. Sidney L. Hancock
Services for Dr. Sidney L. Hancock, Cairo, are at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005 at Cairo First Baptist Church with interment in Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo. Dr. Hancock died Thursday, Jan. 6 at his residence. He was born in Macon on Sept. 20, 1915 to the late Pearl MacElMurray and John M. Hancock Sr. He attended Lanier High School for Boys in Macon where he was active in the ROTC from 1928 to 1933. He attended Mercer University where he earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He attended the University of Georgia Medical College in Augusta where he earned a medical degree and was a member of Phi Rho Sigma Fraternity. After completing an internship at Macon Hospital, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on July 15, 1942. He was assigned to General Montgomery’s British Eighth Army. He participated in campaigns in North Africa, the Middle East, Sicily and Italy. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, World War II Victory Campaign Medal, three overseas service bars. After three years, Captain Hancock returned for further medical study at the School of Aviation Medicine, Randolph Field, San Antonio, Texas, finishing his tour of duty at the Greenville Army Air Base, Greenville, S.C. From 1945 to 1947, Dr. Hancock completed residency training in general surgery at Macon Hospital. In 1947, he left the Macon Hospital as senior resident to establish private practice in Cairo where he worked until he retired in 1972. The Cairo High School Library and the athletic building at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. were built in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Hancock and carry their name. Dr. Hancock was a member of First Baptist Church in Cairo. Survivors include three daughters, Angela Williams of Palm Beach, Fla., Lynda Bishop of Perry, Sydney Kinnard of Cairo; seven grandchildren, Art Williams III of Monroe, April DeMoss of Duluth, John Bishop of Perry, Julie Moore of Perry, Jeanna Smallwood of Spartenburg, S.C., Adam Kinnard of Cairo, Matthew Kinnard of Cairo; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Willamae Gates Hancock who died in 1999; and his parents; and two brothers, John Morgan Hancock Jr. and Buford Everette Hancock. Robert R. ‘Bobby’ Hicks
Services for Robert R. “Bobby” Hicks, 69, of Lake City, Fla., are at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005 at Northwoods Church of God with the Rev. Joey Copeland officiating. Mr. Hicks died Jan. 6 at his residence. He was born in Thomasville and is the son of the late Othan and Laila Lewis Hicks. He was a member of the Lake City Masonic Lodge No. 27 and was a veteran of Korea having served as crew chief for C130 aircraft for 20 years. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Shirley Vonier Hicks of Lake City, Fla.; three sons, Robert (Linda) Hicks Jr., Bill (Lynn) Hicks both of Homestead, Fla., Michael (Donna) Hicks of Powder Springs; three grandsons, Robert Jason Hicks, Billy Hicks Jr., Joey Hicks; a granddaughter, Krystal Hicks; a sister, Faye Barrett of Lakeland, Fla.; and a brother, Larry Hicks of Lakeland, Fla. Inez P. Newsome
Services for Inez P. Newsome are at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 10, 2005 at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. Dan Spencer and the Rev. Dr. Milton Gardner will officiate and interment is in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers are Byron Thompson, Kevin Thompson, Van Pappas, Garrett Newsome, Billy Chastain and Bill Raney. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Chastain, Gary Wilson, Dr. Rick Fenlon, M. M. Battley, Jack Lattrell and Howard Floyd. Mrs. Newsome passed away on Jan. 7 at the age of 81. She was born Carrie Inez Pogue on Jan. 4, 1924 in High Springs, Fl. She attended Central Florida Business College and went to secretarial school in Gainesville, Fla. When she married Mr. Glenn Bozeman in 1944, she moved to Haines City, Fla. After the passing of her husband in 1979, she remained in Haines City until 1986. Mrs. Newsome worked as a secretary in the Polk County public school system for 30 years. During that time, she served for two years as president of the Polk County Association of Educational Secretaries, and received an award for outstanding work in the Educational Secretaries Association. Mrs. Newsome was also a member of the Eastern Star, serving as Star Points Adah and Ruth. After retiring from her work with the school system in 1986, Mrs. Newsome moved to Thomasville, to be near her daughter, Glenda Thompson. On Jan. 9, 1988, she married Homer Lee Newsome in Thomasville. Mr. and Mrs. Newsome shared a common love of family, traveling, and their church. Mrs. Newsome has been an active member of the First Baptist Church in Thomasville since 1986. She was president of the Ginger Griffin Sunday School class for two years. She was also active in the Auxiliary of American Legion Post 31 and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Mrs. Newsome is survived by her husband of 17 years, Homer Lee Newsome; her daughter, Glenda Thompson, of Dacula, Georgia; her sister, Willie Ruth Chastain; two step-children, Dan Newsome and Carole Newsome; three grandchildren, Lori Thompson Pappas, Byron Thompson and Kevin Thompson; and three step-grandchildren, Garrett Newsome, Chason Newsome, and Trey Hayes. She was married to Robert Sellers of Cairo on Sept. 2, 1998. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Cairo. Mrs. Bradley died Tuesday, Jan. 4 in Orlando, Fla. Born Oct. 24, 1965 in Boston, she was the daughter of Barbara Bradley Brinson and the late Howard Lundy Sr. She graduated from Central High School in 1984 and attended Southwest Georgia Technical College with an associate of arts degree. A longtime resident of Tallahassee, Fla. where she worked as secretary for the Florida Department of Corrections. She attended Greater Love Church of God in Christ where she accepted Christ in her life. She moved to Orlando with her mother to continue treatment for her illness. Born in Birmingham, she was the fifth child of the late Frederick and Julia Ann Weller Schilling. She was the beloved wife of the late Russell Garrett Barnett and precious mother to the late John Wesley Barnett and Dorothy Barnett Campbell. Mrs. Barnett was a long time resident of Chattanooga, Tenn., where she was a Red Cross nurses aide. After the death of her husband in 1984, she moved to Thomasville to be with family. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. For the past six years she lived at Suites of Woodleaf among many loving friends and caring resident assistants. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Dot and Roy Campbell of Thomasville; grandchildren, Sharon Campbell Fiskus and husband, Lewis of Thomasville, Leesa Campbell Bone and husband, Bill of Ft. Belle Sr. She attended Farmingdale State University of New York where she received an associate of dietary science degree. She was a dietitian supervisor for the state of New York and had lived in Amityville, N.Y. prior to moving to Thomasville 15 years ago. She was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.
