Graveside services for Ann Flowers Price, 83, Charlotte, N.C., are at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004 at Sharon Memorial Park, 5400 Monroe Rd., Charlotte. Mrs. Price died Nov. 8 at Southminster. She was the daughter of the late Robert Flowers and Nettie Winn Flowers of Thomasville. Mrs. Price was a graduate of Agnes Scott College and Western Reserve University. Following graduation, she worked for several years in social work. She was a longtime member of Myers Park Baptist Church and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She and her husband, Porter, spent most of their retirement years at Sunset Beach, N.C. Survivors include her son, William Porter Price III and daughter-in-law, Ann Moorman Price of Columbia, S.C.; a daughter, Winn Price Sams of Columbus, N.C.; six granddaughters; a sister, Claire Flowers Morgan of Jacksonville, Fla.; and special friend, Walter “Buck” Kennedy of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Mitchell Price; and husband of 51 years, W. Services for Benny F. Grant Jr. of Cairo are at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 at St. Mary AME Church, 205 McNair-Moor Rd., Climax. The Rev. Ronald Williams, pastor, and the Rev. Willie F. Griffin will officiate. Interment is in Conyer’s Cemetery in Climax. Active pallbearers are Charles Jones Sr., Wesley Higdon Sr., Fontabian Donaldson Sr., Marcus Holton, Freddie Cunningham and Douglas Richardson. Mr. Grant died Nov. 17 at his residence. He was born Dec. 8, 1948 to the late Benny F. Grant Sr. and Mother Ruby Gibson Grant. He attended the Decatur County Public Schools and graduated from Mt. Moriah High School in Attapulgus. He also attended a school in New York, majoring in accounting. He served in the United States Army where he received a Purple Heart and an honorable discharge. At an early age, he joined St. Mary AME Church. Survivors include two sons, Ronald and Elijah Grant; loving and devoted sisters, Betty (Arthur Lee) Gurley, Ella (Hubert) Metcalf, Jackquelyn (Charles) Jones all of Cairo, Teresa Lowery of Atlanta; three brothers, Jessie Grant, Ezekiel Grant of Cairo, Gary (Verna) Grant of Climax; four aunts; two uncles; a host of loving nieces; nephews; cousins; and sorrowing friends. She served as a dietitian for Garrison-Pilcher Elementary school, was a member of Midway CME Church, and attended the Midway School. In 1980, she married husband Jack Davis, who preceded her in death. He earned an associate of arts degree from Brookhaven College in 1995 and a degree from North Texas State in 1995. He was a member of Dallas Family and Friends Church in Dallas and was customer service coordinator at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He had lived in Dallas for 21 years after moving from Miami, Fla. Joseph T. Sumrall Sr.
Services for Joseph T. Sumrall Sr., 79, Bonaire, are at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004 at Central Baptist Church in Warner Robins with interment following in Magnolia Park Cemetery. Mr. Sumrall died Monday, Nov. 1. He was born in Jones County, Mississippi on Oct. 12, 1925. He retired from the United States Army Air Force, having served during World War II. He received his undergraduate and master’s in education from the University of Alabama and a specialists degree in education from the University of Georgia. He started his career as a coach and educator at Thomasville High School in 1951. From 1966 to 1987 he was employed by the Houston County Board of Education as a coach, educator and administrator. In Thomasville and Thomas County, Ga. he was inducted in the Sports Hall of Fame. He was a founder of the Houston County Drug Action Council (HODAC) and served on the H.E.A. Federal Credit Union Board of Directors. In his retirement, he served as a PGA official and also worked part-time at the Houston Lake Country Club. He was ordained as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Thomasville, where he taught a boys Sunday School Class. He was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he taught a Young Men’s Sunday School Class and coached men’s softball. He was currently in Pete Joyner’s 8:30 Sunday School Class. His hobbies included, besides his family and friends, he loved golf, gardening, sports and his dog “Bo”. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His parents, Thomas Clinton and Erma Mae Sumrall preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jean N. Sumrall of Bonaire; children, Krista Joyner (Ronnie) of Grand Rapids, Mich., Dr. Joe Sumrall, Jr. (Jeffre) of Bonaire, June Eberhart (Richard) of Fayetteville, Kaye Latham (Hal) of Peachtree City, Joy Crawford (Johnny) of Macon; sister, Bernice Hurst, Ellisville, Miss.; 20 grandchildren; and twin great-grandchildren. He was a retired lieutenant with the Georgia State Patrol Department, member of First United Methodist Church, past president of the Optimist Club in Newnan, Newnan High School Booster Club, First United Methodist Church Men’s Club and Masonic Lodge 60 in Newnan. He was active in civic and community service during his career. After moving to Cairo in 1997, he became a member of the First United Methodist Church in Cairo and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and active in the Methodist Men’s Club and a member of Golden K. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Survivors include his wife, Helen G. Williams of Cairo; daughter, Kay David and husband, T.D. of Cairo; grandchildren, Katie Minter of Athens, John Minter of Athens; sister, Myrtle Lockeridge of Cedartown, Beulah Gilliam of Cedartown; and a brother, Don Williams of Cedartown.
