Rufus P. Miles
Rufus P. Miles, 78, of Jesup diedTuesday, June 4, 2002, in Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas after an extended illness. The Appling County native had lived in Wayne County 45 years and in Douglas the past year. He was retired from ITT Rayonier Southern Wood Piedmont of Camilla. He was predeceased by a son, John Max Miles. Survivors are his wife, Nelda L. Miles of Douglas; two daughters and sons-in-law, LeJean and Russell Trammell of Douglas and Susan Elaine and Roger Whatley of Dothan, Ala.; a sister, Geneva Sellers of Savannah; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Grace Holcomb Waters, 82, of Screven diedWednesday, June 5, 2002 after an extended illness. The Jeff Davis County native had lived in Wayne County most of her life and was a member of O’Quinn Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was the widow of Felton C. Waters. Survivors are two sons, Odis Windell Griffin and James F. Waters, both of Screven; a daughter, Gwennette Parker of Richmond Hill; a sister, Lucy Yawn of Vidalia; two brothers, Roy Joe Holcomb of Bristol and Reuben Holcomb of Baxley; three grandchildren, Thomas “T” Miller of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Dale Griffin of Jesup and Jeanie Beard of Screven; five great-grandchildren, Misty Drury, Matthew Griffin, Jessica Osborne, Mandy Griffin and Hannah McBee; and two great-great-grandchildren, Hamp Osborne and Isabella Drury. Claudean Harper Crosby Claudean Harper Crosby, 82, diedFriday, Sept. 27, 2002, at her residence. The life-long resident of Wayne County was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Kathy and Thomas Pye, Dinah Nichols, Geraldine and Archie Teston, all of Jesup, and Brenda and Mike Harrison of Odum; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 29, at the Little Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Manning, the Rev. Jim Mitchell, and Chaplain Mary Marshal officiating. She was a member of Old Bethel Baptist Church and was a former employee of the Manhattan Shirt Company. Survivors are her husband of 68 years, S.R. Elliott of Screven; a son, Donald Elliott of Screven; a brother, Harmon Daniel of Odum; three grandchildren, John Elliott Gill, Lisa Elliott, both of Screven, and Jeffrey Elliot Sr. of Jesup; eight great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mary Lou Fabian Mary Lou Fabian, 83, of Jesup diedMonday, Sept. 30, 2002, in St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla., after a brief illness. Born in Riceboro, she lived most of her life in Jesup and was very active for many years in the Jesup Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses until her sudden illness and death. She is survived by her husband, Leonard Fabian, of Jesup; a son, Eric Fabian, of Jesup; two daughters, Florine Walker of Alachua, Fla., and Geneva Cunningham of Rochester, NY; five brothers, James LeCounte of Jacksonville, Fla., Mack LeCounte of Brunswick, Italy LeCounte Jr., and Willie LeCounte of Buffalo, NY and Cleveland LeCounte of Riceboro; four sisters, Lorena LeCounte and Catherine L. Wright of Buffalo, NY, Anna LeCounte Noble of Brunswick, Alberta LeCounte of Riceboro; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends. Edward J. Nix Jr., 86, of Jesup diedFriday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Wayne Memorial Hospital after a short illness. The Tift County native was a former resident of Kansas City, Mo. and had lived in Wayne County for several years. He was a retired employee of Hallmark Cards and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors are his wife, Catherine E. Nix of Leawood, Kansas; a daughter, Suzanne E. Peters of Leawood, Kansas; a brother and sister-in-law, Gay and Pat Nix of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews. Carolyn Kent Pearson, 55, diedMonday, Sept. 30, 2002, at her residence in Jesup. The Dodge County native had lived in Wayne County most of her life. She was a member of Parkway Church of God. She was employed by the Wayne County Board of Education as a paraprofessional at James E. Bacon Elementary School for the past seven years. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Dean Pearson and three brothers, Royce, Don and Wilton Kent. She is survived by her husband, Barry D. Pearson of Jesup; a daughter and son-in-law, Sonya P. and Scotty Miller of Jesup; a son and daughter-in-law, Shannon K. and Donna Pearson of Jesup; four sisters, Melba Griffis, Betty Hall, Wynell Hobbs, all of Jesup and Welda Thornton of Florahome, FL; a brother, Hilton Kent of Florahome, FL; four grandchildren, Levi Pearson, Logan Pearson, Macee Miller and Camron Miller, all of Jesup. Funeral services will be held today at 4 p.m. at Parkway Church of God in Jesup with the Rev. Randy Rowell and the Rev. Eugene Evors officiating. Joey Dwight Richardson, 40, diedSunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in Lakeland, FL, as the result of a boating accident. The life-long resident of Wayne County was the owner and operator of Altamaha Marine. He was a Baptist, a 1979 graduate of Wayne County High School, and served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Richardson is survived by two sons Brent Stephen Richardson and Timothy Richardson, both of Screven; his parents, Ronda and Bill Stipe of Jesup and Stephen and Ann Richardson of Fernandina Beach, FL; a sister, Leisa Forman of Atlanta; two brothers, William I. “Billy” Stipe, Jr. of Jesup and Micah S. Richardson of Fernandina Beach, FL; his paternal grandmother, Maude Stipe of Baxley; a fiancee, Lana Blanton; and several aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at Gordon-Harrison Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Felix Haynes and Elder J. Roland Waters officiating. Herod H. Elliott, 69, of Jesup diedWednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at his residence after an extended illness. The Wayne County native was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a U.S. Air Force decorated veteran of 26 years. Survivors are his wife, Nang Elliott of Jesup; two daughters, Janet Helen Elliott Evans of Charleston, S.C., and Air Elliott of Jesup; two sons, Richard H. Elliott of Incirlik, Turkey, and Thomas H. Elliott II of Jesup; a brother, Dr. Paul M. Elliott Sr., of Jesup; three grandchildren, Christopher Brunner, Nichole Alexandria Brunner and Cynthia Lynn Evans, all of Charleston; and several nieces and nephews. Royal Williams
Royal Williams, 71, of Jesup diedTuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Charleston, S.C. after a short illness. The Wayne County native had a degree in industrial engineering and business education. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and a former Wayne County Commissioner serving as chairman. He was instrumental in securing the Veterans’ Monument at the Wayne County courthouse and was an avid gardener and fisherman. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Williams Leggett. Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Patsy and Steve Graham of Savannah and Cindy and Ronnie Sutton of Jesup; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robby and Cindy Williams of Screven and Royce and Linda Williams of Richmond Hill; two sisters, Doris Patterson of Jesup and Geneva Snow of Dixie; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
