Jesup - James R. Gordon, 67, diedJune 13 at his residence. The Long County native had lived in Jesup for the past 50 years. He was a 1958 graduate of the John A. Gupton School of Mortuary Science in Nashville, Tenn., and has been a licensed funeral director and embalmer for the past 46 years. He was a member of the Georgia Funeral Director’s Association, a former member and past president of the Jesup Jaycees, a former member and past president of the Touchdown Club, and a former member of the Jesup Kiwanis Club. He was a member and past Exhaulted Ruler of the Jesup Elks Lodge, a member of Jesup First Baptist Church and the Howard “Bo” Warren Sunday school class, and an avid fisherman. Survivors are his wife, Anita Parker Gordon of Jesup; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen Gordon of Jesup and Pam G. and George Hires of Shellman Bluff; a son and daughter-in-law, James R. “Jay” and Wendy Gordon Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Nell G. Horne of Ludowici, Lillian G. and Bobby Simmons of Ludowici and Jan G. and Gordon Mixon of Ludowici; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Everett and Robbie Gordon of Lumber City and W.R. “Bill” and Shirley Gordon of Sugar Hill; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Gordon of Jesup and Ruth Parker Murray of Waycross; five grandchildren, Joseph Gordon, Amber Gordon, Gracen Gordon, Addison Gordon and Jameson Gordon; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. June 16 at Jesup First Baptist Church with Dr. Felix Haynes and David Simmons officiating. Burial was in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Billy Gordon, David Simmons, Dale Simmons, Bobby Chestnut, Jeff Parker, C.F. Brannen, Rob Gordon and Ashby Brannen. Honorary pallbearers were the Wednesday night Pond House Group, the Howard “Bo” Warren Sunday school class and the Jesup Elks Lodge. Jesup - Miguel Angel “Mickey” Rivera, 32, of Jesup diedTuesday, June 15, 2004, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on 301 North of Jesup. The native of Puerto Rico had lived in Wayne County the past five years and was a former employee of Ross Lighting and presently employed with Jesup Healthcare. Survivors are his wife, Diana C. Rivera; two daughters, Crystal Rivera and Nadjja Rivera, both of Jesup; a mother, Ana Rivera Ortiz of Ceiba, Puerto Rico; three sisters, Ana Rivera of Jesup, and Milagros Rivera and Rosa Rivera, both of Puerto Rico; two brothers, Raul Rivera of Puerto Rico and Luis Rivera of Jesup. Frances J. Baggs
Ludowici - Frances J. Baggs, 79, of Ludowici diedJune 15, 2004, at Coastal Manor Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. The Long County native and resident was a member of Elem Missionary Baptist Church in Ludowici. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Winell and Kenneth Bingham of Morrow and Ann and Willie Thompson and Florence Baggs, all of Ludowici; two sons and daughters-in-law, Clifton and Edna Jackson of Virginia Beach, Va., and Thomas and Gloria Baggs of Independence, Kan.; one sister, Addie Jackson of New Haven, Conn.; one brother and sister-in-law, Arrelious and Juanita Jackson of Ludowici; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were scheduled for June 19 at 2:30 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church with the Rev. James Evans and the Rev. Richard Neal officiating. Leandra Blome, 68, of Screven diedAug. 20, 2004, after an extended illness. The Hardin County native had lived in Wayne County the past year and a half. She was a member of Adel Methodist Church of Iowa. She was predeceased by her husband, Carroll A. Blome, and a grandson, Cole Sertich. Survivors are a daughter, Sherry Sertich of Screven; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Douglas Blome of Des Moines, Iowa, and Jason and Cathy Blome of Dallas Center, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Jerry Lee Crum Jr., 37, of Brunswick diedAug. 14, 2004, at the home of his father in Jesup. Crum was bornOct. 14, 1966, in Brunswick and was a graduate of Brunswick High School. He loved spending time at Glynn Place Mall. His family says he loved everybody and everybody loved him. Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Erie C. Lockhart and William Lockhart of Brunswick; and his father and stepmother, Jerry L. Crum Sr. and Joanne Odum Crum of Jesup. Theresa R. Kirby
Theresa Rowell Kirby, 83, of Saint Simons Island diedAug. 12, 2004, at the Brian Center Inn on Saint Simons Island. Kirby was a native of Screven County and a former resident of Wayne and Camden counties. She had been a resident of Saint Simons Island for the past three years. She was a graduate of Bessie Tift College and had taught school in Moultrie, Jesup and Brunswick. She was a former member of First Baptist Church in Jesup and a member of Waverly United Methodist Church in Waverly. Kirby enjoyed flower gardening and playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Kirby Jr. She is survived by three sons, Bill Kirby III and Kelly Kirby, both of Saint Simons Island, and Guy Kirby of Arden, N.C.; a daughter, Merry K. Blair of Gainesville; a sister, Linda Rowell of Atlanta; eleven grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; several nieces and nephews; and several women who cared for her after the death of her husband. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. today (Sunday) in the chapel of Saint Simons United Methodist Church. Timothy L. Madison, 39, of Allenhurst diedAug. 16, 2004, in Wayne Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. The Duval County, Fla., native had recently moved to Long County. He was a member and deacon of St. John Church of Christ H.U.T.L. in Ludowici. He is survived by his wife, Vontrice D. Madison of Allenhurst; his parents, James and Emma Madison of Jacksonville, Fla.; a paternal grandfather, Ben Coleman; one sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Michael Thomas of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Sheila Madison of Columbus, Phillip and Carol Madison of Jacksonville, Fla., and Kenneth and Kerri Madison of Tampa, Fla.; a mother-in-law and father-in-law, Alphonso and Barbara Nance; a brother-in-law, Leondray Nance; two sisters-in-law, Valarie Lyles and Michelle Johnson; four step-children; five step-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Eugene Moseley “Shorty” Mallard Jr., 77, of Odum diedAug. 18, 2004, in Columbus, Ind., after an extended illness. The Wayne County native had lived in Columbus, Ind., for 3 1/2 years. He was a member of Spring Grove Free Will Baptist Church and retired from ITT Rayonier, Jesup division. He was the widower of Latrelle F. Mallard. Survivors are two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Larry Couch of Columbus, Ind., and Twila and David Harnage of Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren and their spouses, Ryan and Erin Harnage, Nicholas and Keli Harnage, Josh Taylor and Jessica Taylor; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today (Sunday) at Spring Grove Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Parnell Aldridge, the Rev. Larry Williams and the Rev. AnnaMay Frances (Collins) Massey, 77, diedAug. 17, 2004, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup. The native of Somers Pont, N.J., had lived in Hollywood, Fla., 47 years and in Wayne County for the past five years. She was of the Catholic faith and a member of House of Worship. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Robert Massey. Survivors are a son, Robert William Massey of Richmond, Va.; a daughter, Anna Marie Massey Barrow of Jesup; a sister, Helen Myers of Atlanta; a brother, Francis Collins of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Betty S. NeSmith
Betty Smith NeSmith, 74, diedAug. 18, 2004, in the Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick. The Chatham County native was a former resident of Reidsville from 1936-1962 and a resident of Jesup for the past 42 years. She was a 1951 graduate of the Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville (now Georgia College) with a degree in elementary education. She taught school in Reidsville from 1951-1959 and in Jesup from 1963-1989. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, the Puckett-McDonald Sunday school class and the Epworth Sowers. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. NeSmith. She is survived by her daughter, Lynn Hill of Jesup; two sons and daughters-in-law, John C. and Sherry NeSmith of Jesup and James W. and Heather NeSmith of Augusta; an aunt, Lona Mae Padgett of Trenton, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Marjorie NeSmith of Jesup; four grandchildren, Megan Hill, Tony Hill, Chad NeSmith and Taylor NeSmith; and two great-grandchildren, Courtney Allen and Courtiya Allen. George W. Freeman, Jr., 61, of Jesup diedTuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, after a short illness. The Chatham County native was a former resident of Glynn County and was retired from Southern Railroad. He was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and a U. S. Navy veteran serving on the U.S.S. Saratoga. Survivors are his wife, Pauline Dart Freeman of Jesup; three daughters, Lori Rentz of Brunswick, Angie Reynolds of St. Simons Island and Alice Hawley of Bethlehem; a step-daughter, Angie Buchanan of Texas; a step-son, Shane Drawdy of Jesup; a mother, Minnie D. Thomas “Tom” Albert Hurlbut, 81, diedWednesday Dec. 1, 2004 at his residence after an extended illness. The Michigan native had lived in Florida 38 years and in Jesup the past four years. He was a retired auto mechanic and U. S. Army Air Corp veteran firefighter during World War II. He attended First United Methodist Church. Survivors are his wife of 59 years, Jeanne Warn Hurlbut; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Bryan and Fran Hurlbut of New Haven, Conn; a daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Bob Hamilton of Jesup; two sisters, June Thomas of Kalamazoo, Mich, and Jane Dangremond of Allegan, Mich.; two grandchildren, Matt Hamilton of Savannah and Beth Hamilton of Tallahassee, Fla.; and great-grandson, Austin Hansford. Dorothy Virginia Howard Rowell, 69, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at her residence following a long illness. Born in Vero Beach, Fla., she had lived in the Hortense area all of her life. She was a housewife and a member of Twin Rivers Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parants, I. V. and Mary Ellen Thornton Howard and a brother, Herbert Howard.
